here is the problem, i went on amazon and ebay and bought a bunch of social studies textbooks. i wanted to know how are kids being taught the constitution, the declaration, revolutionary war, doing a little bit of research and analysis. all these books did an amazing job teaching what i considered superficial history, who said what, when, when did this battle take place, who wrote a letter to whom but they failed in my estimation when it came to teaching substantive history, why did they do what they did, what were the philosophy and values and there's a quote all of us know, those who don't learn from the past are doomed to repeat it. the problem we observed is kids are not being taught to learn from the past, they are just being taught about the past so they grow up finding history boring, irrelevant to their lives, don't understand why what happened 250 years ago should matter today. our book is an attempt not only to teach what happened but to say here were the ideas they were fighting for, what animated them and how those ideas apply to the modern world. >> host: why did y
