there's energy in new york but when i travel outside of new york and even in new york a little it's pale in comparison. you know, a lot of the chinese who have studied in the u.s. now are lured back because what's happening in the u.s. is there's not the energy that they want to... that they see happening in china and so that is a big lure for everyone, right? for the foreign companies, corporations moving to china. for the students who studied abroad. that china is where the action is, it where's the money is, where the optimism is and because it's in many ways an immature economy, it's going to be like that. you come back to the u.s., it's mature economy and so people are looking at tngs differently. so when i travel around new york city i see that what are people saying when you just walk down the street or sitting next to them on the subway? it's about enjoyment. it's about pleasure in something or it's social activity in chin it's business, it's drive, it's what are we going toe do tomorrow? and that is infectious when you're around it. >> rose: let's talk about the pieces you have

she, my mother was very ill in new york. she didn't seem to feel that i should be in a kind of sick room atmosphere. so she said come live with me, and go to duke if you n get in. and she said-- so it was see, i was only 15 when i went. and i got in as a special student because they were taking some nursing students as special students. and dean baldwin who was also a big influence on me, said you can come if you make a c average the first semester. but if you don't do t you'll have to go and finish high school at durham school and that was fine with me. but hewitt school in new york had a marvelous curriculum for english. and that's what pulled me through. i made as in english. and that pulled me along because hi had no science. and of course hewitt is wonderful, they have science and everything else now. but i will be eternally grateful to them for having done that. >> but just tell me for a moment that the breakup of your parents had this, what impact did it have on you? it just left a sense of lonelylessor being alone. >

if you look at the "new york times" storyewt gingrich is referrg to, which actlly isn't a "new york times" story. it's a reuters story, newt's careful attention to the facts once again. but bain kes over this steel company that was going to fail and go out of business one way or the other. it was either going to flat out go out of business right then or was going to take it over and do something with it and tk it er and tried legitimately to do something with it. they faile they managed it poorly, but they really tried to save this business. the thing people are going to have trouble understanding, ordinary people, is why that business eventually went bankrupt, yet bain still made money from it. >> people understand it too well. i think that aument is a pretty strong argument, maybe even for some republican voters because bain's business was not to create jobs. they were not benevolent owners, "boy this community will be hurt. let's give up some of our wealth to make one last go of it." they took out the money where they could. that was the businesthey were in. >> mitt romney is out there
