hello. i'm bruce johnson. we begin with breaking news in montgomery county, where police have made an a relevant in a series of home-invasion robberies in we continue to and bethesda, maryland. lindsey, what can you tell us about this? >> reporter: police just made the announcement, they say they arrested the suspect this morning in north carolina, and this is the guy that they say is responsible for two home invasions, tying up a family and one case and even sexually assaulting one of his victims. and i want to show you the picture that police released earlier. they say that this is 33-year- old kevin ray of fort washington on january 10th --

or january 11th, he went to a home in bethesda and actually tied up the homeowner and her teenage son as well their housekeeper. police say he sexually assaulted their housekeeper, stole her debit card and her car. the day before in wheaton, they say that he robbed a woman in her garage and he took her car and atm card as well. he even demanded her pin number. and in that case, they say he even held a gun up to her child's head so until she come mild. this -- police got a break in this case because the suspect used the debit card and he was actually seen in places that had security cameras. >> we received a lot of information from the public once we released the photograph of him. and some of the information led us to identify the suspect. certainly we know that residents in those specific communities were concerned but we also knew that residents throughout the county were

concerned, and that's why some made a priority to apprehend this individual and that's why we're letting the public know that this man is in custody and they can have a sense of relief tonight. >> there's another case that happened yesterday in simple hills. police do not know yet if it's related, but the stories are a bit similar. they say in that case, a suspect went into the home, tied up several members of the family and sexually assaulted one of the victims as well. so we're still trying to find out whether those two cases are reeled. we're told here in montgomery county that police are working with detectives in prince george's county to find out if this is the same suspect. reporting live, back to you. >> you still working this story. how did they get him in north carolina, do we know? >> reporter: we're told that detectives got all of these tips and after they released that first picture of him about some surveillance video and so they had a pretty good idea of who the suspect was, and they said that the detectives were

able to link and follow him in some way. i asked the detectives if they followed this man down to north carolina. they won't release those details. >> okay, lindsey, thank you for that live report. turning elsewhere, a massive search underway offer the coast of italy, where a luxury cruise ship ran aground with 4200 people aboard last night. three bodies have been recovered and 40 people still missing tonight. divers have been searching the submerged portion of the ship, but they have been pulled out of the water for the rest of the evening. there are reports that captain of the ship has been arrested. >> reporter: a luxury cruise liner is floating on its side off the coast of italy, as rescue crews search the water for victims. the ship started to tip over friday night after it ran aground in shallow water near the tuscan island. the impact ripped a 160-foot gash in its hull. >> all of a sudden everything shifted on the ship, fell off

our table at dinner. they said everything was fine. obviously it's not fine. >> moments after the crash, everything was disorganized. >> we had a blackout and everybody was screaming, all the passengers were running up and down. >> passengers say the crew waited so long that not all of lifeboats could be lowered because the ship had rolled over too far. some of the survivors say they have to fight for life vests, crawled uphill or jump over board. >> i was looking at the boat coming. so i went to make sure to get further away. i go to the deck and kick, kick, kick! swim, swim! >> saturday morning ferries brought survivors to this town where they got warm drinks and blankets. rescue crews climbed onboard the damaged cruise liner to make sure it all passengers and crewmembers were off. and divers searched the submerged part of the ship for victims. officials say there are still people missing and they will continue the search until

everyone is accounted for. we're told more than 100 americans were reported onboard, including a survivor from gaithersburg, maryland. after searching for nearly a year the so-called serial butt slasher, police say they have a suspect in custody tonight. police arrested jimmy pimentel of peru yesterday. they tracked him down in a shopping mall. >> he thought he was going to get away but they got him anyway! >> when it first happened i was scared to come here. >> reporter: a sigh of relief for these girls. >> i was in the 21 the day before he was there, and now that he's caught it feels good. i was there with her, and i go with friends, and i was just scared. >> police say they linked 40- year-old johnny pimentel to nine slashings of women's backsides in northern virginia, including two at tyson' corner and five at fair oaks mall. >> it's about this long, and i mean, it was like a gush. it was pretty deep.

>> the slasher left a 3-inch gash on the buttocks of this 20- year-old pregnant woman, leaving fair oaks. >> there was blood all over my hands. i started freaking out. >> police may have caught him before he could strike again because police arrested him in a shopping mall in lima, yesterday. >> that's probably why he was there. yeah, luckily he was caught before he was able to do anything else. >> criminal profilers say the butt slasher may have a disorder and finds sexual gratification by cutting someone in a sexually significant area. fairfax police formed a task force and worked with international police after learning pimentel may have returned to his home country of peru in september. >> people who would think about committing a crime like this know they're not going to get away with it. fairfax county police say they're working on an extraditing pimental back to

the united states. a driver is pulled over this morning, but it wasn't police officers trying to make an arrest. this evening police are looking or two to police imposters. police say two armed men both wearing vests and said police in bold letters stopped a car in southeast and told the driver to step out. that's when the police imposters took his cash. police say the suspect's car also had flashing lights on the dashboard. a university student still missing and police are asking for help in finding her tonight. an intense effort is now underway to locate yarr ana carr, a freshman who disappeared from campus last week. she left her home in oakland, california on a flight returning to washington. and that was on january 7th. she did arrive back here and was seen on campus after that. however, family members have not been able to contact her. anybody with information on this student is asked to call police tonight. metro is taking advantage of long holiday weekend to do some serious maintenance work

on three different metro lines. that means add time to your travel plans this weekend. on the blue and orange lines, there's no service this weekend between la parm plaza until midnight monday. shuttle buses will get you around the closure, but add some 20 to 30 minutes to your trip. you should expect delays on the red line as well. red line trains will share a single track in two spots. the first is from dupont circle to van ness, the other from tacoma station to fort glen. coming up on 9news, a weekend preview of the dr. martin luther king birthday celebration. also 30 years ago, a painful recovery was beginning to take place along potomac river. >> it's cold out here. another cold day in store for us, as we finish off the weekend. but then some milder air comes this way. i've got your complete forecast including a holiday for mlk day. right now temperatures in the 30s but feels like the 20s. the forecast is coming up a little later!

yesterday was the 30th anniversary of the air florida crash into the 14th street bridge. it was 30 years ago today that the painful recovery of all those bodies began. the tail section of flight 90 marks the gravesite in the river. one by one the 74 passengers and crewmembers were lifted from the wreckage. only four passengers and a flight attendant survived the

disaster. four people in vehicles on the bridge were also killed when the plane was brought down by snow and ice. it had accumulated on the wings before takeoff from national airport. >> you were in this truck at the time. tell me what happened. >> we just changed lanes and come across the bridge. traffic was heavy and we heard -- sort of swishing noise come over, and all of a sudden -- large crash, and turn the truck over and we all flipped over in the truck, you know? and then -- i said to my buddy, well, it's got continue a plane crashing. we saw the plane go by. and everybody started hollering so we knew it was a plane crashed then. >> four inches of snow had fallen that day, the plane had been de-iced but sometime had elapsed before the few lot made the decision to take off. this weekend the nation celebrates the birthday of dr. martin luther king. a long weekend every tributes

and the day of service in honor of the slain civil rights leader. downtown washington this morning hundreds of people gathered for the united planning organization 28th annual martin luther king, jr. memorial breakfast. the event raises money for scholarships for low income dc students. mayor gray, chairman and delegates were among those attending the event at the jw marriott. paraphrased quote on the memorial has sparked some controversy since the memorial dedication in october. the department of interior announced yesterday that they will modify the quote to reflect dr. king's actual words. still ahead on 9news now, looking for that perfect tattoo? you have a chance of finding one this weekend. and are we saying bundled up for the rest of the weekend? annie has the forecast just ahead.

chris the city of virginia today, hundreds attended the second d.c. tattoo arts expo. close to 200 of the world's best artists were on hand. it also places gateway marriott. they were showing off their inking skills. today mark the second day of a four-day event dedicated to the art of tattooing. >> it will be going on through sunday. live tattooing, and we have 184 artists tattooing and live tattoo contests going on behind you. those will continue through the afternoon. then we'll be here to do the miss d.c. contest. and after that we will have the 500 tricycle race that, will wrap up evening and we'll get back at it tomorrow. >> tomorrow's activities include live tattooing demonstrations all day long, and the miss junior d.c. pin-up contest. begs the question, you got a tattoo? >> i do not. i can't deal with the pain, do you? >> on this body? are you kidding me? no! >> learning new things about

teens in winchester and martins burg. hagerstown 18. freezing mark, not as bad as closer to the mod rating water. here's the national picture. even parts of seattle, portland and the cascades getting some snowshowers. also into parts of kentucky where we have some winter weather advisories and maybe some light snow still expected. we're talking about still some cloudy conditions, definitely the mountains getting good snow like about a foot of fresh powder so the skiers finally enjoying that. all right. so cold sunday, then we get milder. for tonight cold again, sunday is going to be sunny and cold. milder and breezy for the martin luther king holiday. then on tuesday, we'll be milder but wet. so for tonight, partly to mostly cloudy and cold. two to three blanket night, definitely bundled up if you're heading out on the town. overnight low for the upper 20s and downtown, but 24 in manassas. lower 20s to be hagerstown. culpeper 25 degrees.
