incident. as you said, berkeley street this morning, take a lock at the map in temple hills. a woman was warming up her car. she saw a guy she wasn't comfortable with. turned out that guy followed her into the house. he tied up the occupants, sexually assaulted her. stole items and stole her vehicle. take a look at the picture from the previous incidents in montgomery county. prince georges county police don't know that this is the guy, but they are certainly concerned about that possibility. here's captain steve nguyen as the police just spoke to us. >> we are currently working with the montgomery county police department. there are similarities that we are looking into to see if this is related to those cases as well. the time of day, the fact the property was taken. how the incident occurred. the time of day. those factors, there appear to be similarities. >> all right, so here in prince georges county, they are trying to act quickly. they believe they have a serial

home invader on their hands. they are looking for this vehicle tonight. it's a vehicle taken in temple hills this morning. it is a white honda civic, 2008 model and there's a maryland tag 6ae9788. so a 2008 white honda civic that was stolen from this woman who was sexually assaulted in her own home this morning with other occupants of the house tied up. they are looking for that car. they think it may be the guy responsible for all these home invasions. reporting live, scott broom, 9news now. >> scott, thank you. a trial date is now set for a man accused of killing his estranged wife and his stepson. curtis lopez is charged with murdering jane and 11-year-old william mcquain of germantown in october. his trial is scheduled to begin july 10. jane mcquain was found beaten and stabbed to death in her apartment. her son's body was later found in woods in clarksburg,

maryland. its nose was up, the tail was down. >> 30 years ago in the mist of a snowstorm and an early rush hour, air florida flight 90 slammed into the 14th street bridge. 74 people on the tampa bound plane died that day as well as four people on that bridge. the images that stay with us from that day are from the five people plucked from the icy potomac. a bystander jumped in the water. bruce leshan is here and he says the legacy of this crash is a dramatic increase in airline safety. >> derek, you know, nearly 80 people died in this air florida crash. but the disaster forced safety changes that have likely saved countless more lives and made our skies far, far safer. >> all of a sudden this plane come dropping right out of the sky. right at you. >> horror from the sky on an icy january night. the ntsb concluded the pilots failed to turn on a heating system that would have kept the

jets engines from clogging while they waited for clearance to take off. >> unfortunately, it cost us a lot of lives to learn a lesson. >> the key lesson was communication. >> there's two in the cockpit. >> kept poking the gauges, asking the pilot if it was right. >> he knew something was wrong and he communicated that to the cabin. one of the lessons we learned over the years is to pay absolute attention to the other guy in the cockpit. >> these army reservists returned to the bridge to remember. they ran the landing boats that help recover the debris and the dead. >> the moment i remember the most was the last day, when they discovered the body of the baby. it was the day i shed tears. >> but they have no fear forwarding planes. >> they made tremendous

changes in safety. >> they have much better chemicals to fight ice. >> we had deicing fluid, now we have deicing fluid. >> there are regulations mandating how long an airliner can wait on the taxiway before it is required to return for another round of deicing. airline crashes are exceedingly rare now. but no human is perfect. >> do you think this could happen again? >> unfortunately, because there's humans in the mix, we always have a chance to fail. >> 27 years ago when i first started in the tv business, i covered the crash of a gambling charter plane in reno. in that case, the pilot heard a banging noise, failed to apply enough thrust as he was climbing out, stalled, crashed into the ground. same problem here. those clogged engines made the pilot, the co-pilot think they were applying more thrust than they actually were. experts say that if they had

christopher stevens. they also say they recovered some of that stolen property. the thefts took place at united methodist church, and north stafford church of christ. another plea today surrounding the corruption case that brought down former d.c. council member, harry thomas. >> i'm surae chin at the federal courthouse in d.c. where there's more fallout from the harry thomas corruption scandal. marshall banks walks out of federal court on this friday the 13th. he pleaded guilty to u.s. code section 666. one count of knowing about the embezzlement scheme and failing to report it. jamison is banks' attorney. >> this is a tragic attorney and the citizens of the district of columbia are hurt by this and understandably so. >> come on. >> according to court documents, x councilman, harry thomas, feared $400,000 through bank's nonprofit organization. more than 300,000 was kicked back to thomas for personal

so, here's the real deal about the person whose cell phone interrupted a performance by the new york phil harmonic. how allen gilbert stopped a performance dead tuesday when somebody's cell phone went off in the audience. now that someone is speaking out to the "new york times."

the newspaper is just calling him patron x. he says his company had just given him an iphone to replace a blackberry the day before the show. and the mantels the paper he did turn it off, but didn't know an alarm had been set. you know that having the power off won't stop that alarm from sounding. the long time subscriber to the phil hair hair monic hasn't slept in two days. a tongue and cheek campaign is underway to rename airport, libraries, and whatnot to honor the late president. now the initiative calls on the parliament to adopt such a law. it calls on the current president to immediately take his name. some 6,000 people have joined the initiative. >> up next, a decision about virginia's gop primary ballot. will rick perry and others be included? we'll have an answer.

four republican hopefuls will not appear on virginia's primary ballot. that's the final word from a judge whose ruling came down just hours ago. anny hong joins us with details. anny. >> the federal judge says he will not add texas governor, rick perry and virginia's republican presidential primary ballot. the candidates should have challenged the qualifying rules earlier and they knew the rules months ago. the governor sued last month after failing to submit enough signatures to get on the ballot. newt gingrich and john huntsman failed to qualify. then later joined perry's lawsuit. they were hoping the judge would declare virginia's law unconstitutional. the aclu of virginia also was in support of those four candidates, arguing their rights for violated when it prohibited them from using

circumstanceulators. collected 10 ,000 signatures to be on the ballot. >> i want to congratulate the governor of texas. go to perry for his courage and tenacity. fighting for the virginia voters and allowing them to give them an opportunity to participate in the lektorial process. >> only former massachusetts governor, mitt romney and ron paul qualified for the march 6 primary ballot. anita, back to you. >> lots of disappointed candidates. meantime, a federal judge says she has gotten a letter from a cardiologist saying former presidential candidate, john edwards, has a life threatening heart condition. and he is going to need surgery next month. this comes to light during a hearing today on whether edwards would go on trial later this month. the judge agreed to delay the trial until late march to allow time for john edwards to recover from his surgery. president obama is hoping

to streamline operations across the federal government and as sandra reports, that means asking congress for the power to streamline the bureaucracy. a power no president has had since the 1980s. >> president obama points to a tangled messy flowchart friday to illustrate the maze of federal agencies. >> the government we have is not the government that we need. >> he is proposing to make government leaner by consolidating multiple federal agencies. >> let me be clear. i will only use this authority for reforms that result in more efficiency, better service, and a leaner government. >> for example, the president says he would combine the six departments and agencies focused on business and trade into one, with one website and one phone number. >> with this authority, we could help businesses grow, save biseses time, save taxpayer dollars. >> lawmakers say they are

now by morning, bright but brisk. mostly sunny, breezy and cold. windchills teens and 20s. still a little bit breezy early on saturday morning, west, northwest at 10 to 15. by afternoon, well we'll call it partly cloudy and cold. maybe a passing flurry. winds subside. winds turn more northwesterly at 10, which is a colder wind. i think more of a northwesterly wind sunday night as well. all right, zone forecast. oakland probably only 16 on saturday. maybe a snow shower. 28 in cumberland. low 30s in hagerstown. maybe 38 in culpeper and mid 30s in warrenton, leesburg, and manassas. downtown, upper 30s. looking at 38 in andrews. upper 30s into maryland and by the bay and a small craft advisory for the bay and title potomac. a little bit colder. temperatures in the mid 30s. very nice on monday. back in the mid 40s. tuesday, it's a weak system.

neck after offseason surgery. didn't play a single down this year. what to make of all this? dave gives us his take. >> i don't see this happening on either side. number one, they tried this with donovan mcnabb. younger and healthier. it blew up, it didn't work. number two, both control freaks. they would be clashing like crazy. have you seen a quarterback call more audibles than peyton manning? he doesn't want his quarterback changing anything at the line of scrimmage. >> with the home for the afc playoffs. brady versus tebow part two right here on channel 9. raise your hand if at the start of the year you thought the caps would be in 8th place, that's the position the team finds themselves in and they work to change that tonight as they face their division rival, tampa bay is in town. the caps won five of their last seven. a win tonight would help make up ground on teams above them and put distance between the
