. breaking news at the white house tonight where somebody threw a smoke bomb over the north fence.

1500 people were chanting and singing, and no arrests were made. before going to the white house, protesters rallied on the supreme court steps and outside the capital. they are upset about how the government handles economic disparity among other things. and dogs on the attack. two loose near a day care biting people, including a man in a wheelchair. three people were taken to the hospital and the screams of children and adults to be heard a block away. >> reporter: doreen, witnesses explain the scene as chaotic, and the police officer shot the dog. this man describes how he was waiting at the bus stop when two dogs rushed at him. he said one was a german

shepherd and the other a small white dog. when he ran across the street, they ran after him. witnesses say that at one point the german shepherd ran toward a day care center and bit a man in a wheelchair. neighbors say they could hear children and adults streaming from a block away. >> officers got flagged down, and he noticed he had a victim that was bitten a few times by the day care center, and he notes the dog a block away and had to intervene with the dog who continued to attack other people. >> reporter: police say three people were taken away to the hospital by ambulance. the dog's owner did come to the scene, and she was upset, and it's a very unfortunate situation. back to you. >> thank you. now we go to italy where tonight there's word the captain of a sunken cruise ship may get

out of jail and be put on house arrest. as we learn more about why he made that turn closer to shore, we are hearing from a virginia woman forced to evacuate in a lifeboat. >> they closed the gate and they started to push it off the side of the boat, and people started jumping from the boat into our lifeboat. >> care karen kennedy recalling frightening getaway on the sinking cruise ship, and the ship slammed into rocks and began to take on water three hours into the cruise. tuesday afternoon rescue divers blasted into the ship's hull to access more rooms and hopefully survivors. they found only more bodies, four men and a woman, all wearing life jackets.

20 people still are accounted for. >> we didn't really get confirmation until we were back here yesterday that it was the couple -- sorry. >> the ship's captain appeared in court accused of manslaughter and abandoning ship and revealed a phone conversation with the port authority. the captain was on a lifeboat promising to go back and he never did. investigators believed he made an unauthorized decision to steer off course, and some reports say he wanted the head waiter to see his hometown, and whatever the reason, 11 are dead. and karen fears she lost the two friends they were just getting to know. >> very spiritual people and very kind people.

>> now to the wild weather across the u.s., from snow to tornados, doug, what is going on out there? >> we have seen great weather across the area today with the high temperatures across 60 degrees, but around the country, a little bit of a different story here. we have a big system, and a bigger one out there towards the north west. this was from earlier today. just a little snow fell today, but the storm is coming through overnight tonight and into the day tomorrow. could be the biggest storm they have seen in two to three decades with the potential for up to a foot of snow. a little further to the east, we're talking about kentucky. this was the same storm moving through our area right now, and produced a tornado around louisville, kentucky. that was earlier this afternoon. four tornados reported from the storm prediction center out in norman, oklahoma. and that same system, that same frontal boundary moving through our area, and out ahead of it

very warm air. beautiful afternoon with temperatures close to the 60-degree mark, and did not need a jacket as you made your way out and about, and tomorrow everything will change. winter will make a full return. >> doug, thanks. the top cops in the district pleading for the public's help to find the mother of a baby left to die in subfreezing temperatures. the baby was found leading up to a house in the northeast, and she was naked and diaper and wrapped in a thin towel. she could have been a newborn or up to a month old. >> dealing with babies and elderly folks, difficult for us, because they are the victims that can't speak for themselves, and they are truly defenseless. >> d.c. does have a safe haven law that allows parents to leave babies at a hospital or fire station. a construction worker has been freed tonight after being trapped in a hole for three hours. the man was doing work earlier

this afternoon when he fell in and could not get out. the hole was around the 1,200 block of east highway. it's about 15 feet deep. and traffic in the area was blocked but is clear now, and the victim is expected to be okay. sickened, that's how neighbors feel after more than 40 dead animals were found in a town house steps from their doors. now police are on the hunt for the owners. >> it's real sick. >> reporter: shocked, 40 dead pets found inside of a neighbor's town house. >> i am an animal lover. >> reporter: neighbors have not seen the people that lived there for more than a week. the property manager smelled a odor and called police. >> i don't know how you get 40 animals into one of these houses. i have two. and that's more than enough. >> reporter: animal control

officers said they found 19 dead animals in a freezer, including birds, a guinea pig and a hermit crab. only four were alive. two cats and a lizard. >> it's unusual to find this quantity of dead animals inside. >> it's sick that they would walk away and not be attached to any of their animals. >> reporter: police continue to investigate and urge anybody with information about this case to call the howard county animal control. four days to go before the south carolina primary. the pressure is mounting on the frontrunn frontrunner. mitt romney, his remaining competitors are calling for him to release his tax records. romney is standing firm saying

he will wait until april. he did reveal he pays a 15% income tax, and the white house is questioning romney's break with tradition. >> i believe -- i think it was the tradition that was initiated by then presidential candidate george romney back in 1968. >> my income comes overwhelmingly with investments made in the past, rather than earned annual income, and then i get speaker's fees from time to time but not very much. >> a washington post poll out today said romney is the only one that comes close to the president in a head-to-head match-up. the president will unveil a new plan to boost tourism. the industry has been pushing the president and congress to make travrl to the u.s. easier from developing countries. it's part of the we can't wait series to help create jobs. the president also taking

it is the second wealthiest county and third wealthiest jurisdiction in the states, but fairfax county is facing a troubling trend. the number of children living in poverty is on the rise and that can lead to everything from more violence to long-term health problems. and tonight we have details. jane? >> reporter: well, aaron, the virginia numbers are surprising. the unemployment rate in the state is so low, but since the economic downturn started in 2007, an additional 33,000 children are now living below the poverty line.

many here in fairfax county. karen makes no secret of her financial state. the single mother works at a fast-food restaurant to support herself and 13-year-old son. >> i have to budget my money to pay the bills here, and buy food for him, and, you know, it's something different at school. >> reporter: she considered herself fortunate. she is in a program that moves homeless to self-sufficient see. the new report shows the number of children living in poverty is at a 13 year high, even in affluent northern virginia. >> fairfax county has a very high cost of living. housing is very expensive here. if you are working minimum wage and you are working full time you would need to work 24 hours a day. >> the cities of danville and petersburg lead the state with child poverty rate, each topping

40%. northern virginia is lower. with falls church below that at 2.7%. still shelters are seeing an increase in the most vulnerable populations. >> right now we have 70 people in the building, and 45 of those are children. >> karen says in five years she plans to own the home, thanks to the help of the fairfax county programs. >> i am not making that much money, but the money i make i make stretch. >> reporter: reporting live in bailey crossroad, back to you. the queen of high-fat cooking revealed she has type two diabetes. >> how are you? >> great. >> is the true you have type two diabetes? >> i do. i was diagnosed three years ago during a regular exam with my

to get out and about. this is just some fantastic weather in the month of january if you like it warm. so many of you are saying, hey, where is winter? what is going on? where is the snow? winter is making a return, but still not much in the way of snow. we are sitting currently at 11:18 at night at the highest temperature of the day. how about that? current temperature, 58 degrees. that was the high temperature for the day. we hit that a little earlier this afternoon, and now we are back at 58 because of the strong southwesterly winds. we did see a quarter inch of rain earlier this morning and that came with 40-degree temperatures, so it was starting off on a cold note. we were cold a couple days ago and into the weekend, and this is the roller coaster we have seen. 60s last week and 30s this week, and back to 42 and now 58 degrees out there right now. the winds gusting up to 20 and

25. we're still dealing with the strong breezes and windy conditions. current temperatures, 57 in martinsburg, and 59 in fredericksburg. it's 61 degrees in annapolis at 11:00 at night. and it's amazing how warm we are, but anytime we get this warm, you know we are going to get cold this time of year. storm 4 doppler radar, all of the rain making its way down to the south and east. here is the front, very clearly defined with a line of thunderstorms earlier, and very interesting to see erie in pennsylvania and buffalo, saw severe weather come through earlier with a line coming through, and now they are both seeing snow. that's the cold air that will be racing in our region during the night tonight, so windy and warm out ahead of the system and behind it, there goes the front and here comes the breezy and cool air. tomorrow you will wake up with temperatures that will feel 20 to 30 degrees cooler, and i'm talking about the windchill. 7:00 tomorrow morning, it could

feel like 28 out there strong wur winds. and then wednesday there will be cold air, chilly and temperatures in the 40s. cold is temperatures in the upper 20s and lower 30s and even snow flurries with the front as it moves through on wednesday night. not much snow but maybe a couple flurries in some locations. tomorrow morning, chilly, breezy, and gusts up to 20 miles per hour. that will put windchills low tomorrow. mixture of sun and clouds tomorrow, and much cooler and breezy. winds gusting up to 25 miles per hour. that will keep the windchills all day in the low 30s, so a much different day tomorrow than it was today. a possible flury late on thursday, and high temperature on friday. cold, a high of 35, and friday night into saturday, we have another storm system that will move in. i think it could be cold enough at the start, and we could see
