while you were sleeping, a police cruiser was stolen and crashed. here is what we know right now-- just after midnight, police say a man took the cruiser, triggering a pursuit in the 600 block of pennsylvania avenue in southeast washington.

it's back to work for the virginia and maryland general assemblies. and both have a lot on their plate. in virginia -- gun control, paid family leave, equal pay -- and passing a budget. democratic governor ralph northam will be sworn in.... but republicans hold a one-seat majority. in maryland -- lawmakers will try to override governor hogan's veto of a paid sick leave bill. they'll also focus on expanding medical marijuana licenses. and in both annapolis and richmond-- there's a big focus on transportation. both states get back to work, at noon today. right now, works underway in alexandria to fix a burst pipe at george washington middle sc

just the latest obstacle brought on by this month's cold snap. the school's heating system has also struggled to keep up. last week students were ushered out of class when temperatures in the clasroom dropped into the fifties. last night during a tense p-t-a meeting parents had the oppotunity to question the school's interim superintendent dr. lois f.berlin about these issues. the school is once again closed today. this week's big swing in temperatures could mean a lot more water main breaks. w-s-s-c is expecting a record number. crews have dealt with 406 breaks so far. fairfax water -- which handles much of northern virginia -- has seen around 160 water main breaks. d-c water says there have been 138 breaks and leaks. happening now-- widespread devastation in california. massive mudslides leave more than a dozen people dead --

magnitude quake is one of the strongest to hit the caribbean in five years. there is no serious damage and no reports of injuries. the quake triggered a tsunami threat, but the danger passed. a former texas police officer is heading to prison for killing a teenager he caught breaking into his s-u-v. ken johnson was off-duty when he saw two teens trying to break into his suv. they ran away, but he chased them, ran them off the road, and opened fire. one of the teens died. johnson said he shot the teens because he feared for his life. johnson was sentenced to ten johnson was sentenced to ten years in prison. he faced the possibility of life behind bars. former, arizona sheriff joe arpaio is running for u-s senate. arpaio is known for his hard-line immigration tactics. last year, president trump pardoned him after arpaio was convicted for not
