locomotive going by. it really did. jonathan: incredible stories as families had the ride the storm out in the dark. it wasn't until the first light this morning when they got a look overhead and we could see the damage caused by what we now know was a tornado that touched down. extensive damage. some homes leveled. thank you for staying with us. coming to you live. we have team coverage this afternoon with a lot of the angles of this for you. maryland bureau chief brad bell, he is with me. meteorologist josh knight. also stephen tschida. they have different angles from different stories about how people are coping where not only the devastation of the damage left behind but now how they pick up the pieces and where do they go from here. the short time i ago i walked down where i am standing and mark french, he and his wife were in the bedroom at 1:30. she woke up and said you have to wake up and see the light show going on outside. seconds after he said he got out of bed to watch the lightning, that is

tornado touched down, came across the chesapeake and tore through his house ripping the back half of the home off. this is what he told me this afternoon. >> just look at it. it's like a war zone. i feel like i'm in bosnia. got a nice view now. with no back wall. >> but you're okay. >> that's the saving grace. neither of us was hurt. >> it can be fixed and put back. >> yeah. but what's in between. >> a lot of work. >> a mess.

jonathan: i spent time with mark french. we have more at 5:00. he had his sense of humor intact. he and his wife came through unscathed. but he stepped on a nail because he was wearing flip-flops and his home is deemed unlivable. the insurance adjustors making the rounds. we have seen a convoy of trucks for the utilities. the power could be out two days or a week. there are dozens going through what he is and many are going through worse. brad bell is joining me and you talked to people whose homes were leveled. >> this is a house and one of those stories as well. this is the side wall of the house that has come out in this direction. a man in his

last night when the roof lifted off of the house. there is the roof. he got out with minor injuries. take a look over in this direction. this is clear the path of the tornado. you can see it. the tarps and through there the path marked by the twist and scarred trees. the bay city neighborhood took the hardest hit. path made clear like the damage infleuged. like most of the neighbors laurie had gone to bed and was awakened by the roar of the storm. >> debris flying. it sounded like a locomotive going by. brad: she stepped out of the bedroom, this is what she saw. massive pine tree crushed the roof and landed on the floor of the living

there are dozens of home with similar damage. this home seemed to explode from the inside out. the roof upside down and across the yard. the man inside with minor injuries. very nervous and scared. brad: that is the man they call mr. lou. they call him mr. lou. he has been treated and released. back live, we are looking at the utility crews that are getting in the neighborhood now to start to do repairs. you can see one of the utility poles is down. they have work to do. when we come back at 5:00, we'll tell you the story where the entire home, this house here blew up and went that way. that house the house went this way. clear evidence of the rotation. and the damage tornadoes

do. in stevensville, brad bell, abc7 news. jonathan: all right, brad. thank you very much. we are back to one of the main drags in this -- [audio interruption] >> this is a different view. we are on a pier. if you look in the distance you can see the bay bridge. this thunderstorm worked from prince george's county to anne arundel. there was a severe thunderstorm warning. as it got over the water it had more to work with. different circulations here across the water. extra energy thanks to the moisture that sits here on top of the bay. the storm worked across the water and it began to intensify. look at the boat here on the dock across from me.

you can see that the center console is hanging in the water. i'll take you farther to the right. you can see the tree that just snapped on top of the house. this is just the beginning where the tornado came in to the shore. >> this is one of the damage surveys that was, that had the most degree of damage. there was an injury we heard about. the man is back home and resting comfortably from the injury. we hope everyone stays safe through the trying time.

q mccray has jared kushner's explanations. q? q: he didn't mince words in front of the camera this afternoon saying the meetings last year with the russians were no part in any attempt by moscow to disrupt the 2016 presidential election. the probes in the contact between the trump campaign and russia intensify, jared kushner found himself on if hot seat. hi attended a meeting with a russian lawyer alongside donald trump jr. at trump tower last summer. to clear his name, this morning he met with the congressional investigators privately on capitol hill for two hours. then he met outside the white house and said this. >> i did collude with russia. nor do i know anyone in the campaign who did so. i had no improper contacts. i have not relied on russian funds for my businesses. q: he isn't done pleading his case. he is expected to be interviewed by

kevin lewis has the developing story. what do we know about this guy? kevin: police arrested the muslim family's neighbor. he lived two doors down in the solid quiet community. that man identified as 58-year-old jeffrey frizzle who allegedly pelted the pickup truck with eggs and tomatoes. once in june and then again this month. in one case a vulgar note was left behind. police put two and two together when frizzle called 911 days later to report middle eastern looking men entering his neighbor's house. that frizz frizz allegedly put it men were plotting the next attack. >> he allegedly said, "i know you will arrest me for a hate crime. they are like an infestation of cockroaches" referring to the muslims. a neighbor said he is

unstable. >> we don't inside him over. he comes to our door and he starts to talk about the muslims and he uses derogatory terms and things like that. i'm trying to change the subject and get him, you know, essentially off my doorstep. he will just go on to something else. kevin: the police say jeffrey frizzell caused a car crash on georgia avenue. he told officers he was working for homeland security and kneaded to stop a terrorist who he hit. he is now in jail on charges of assault, reckless endangerment and religious harassment. live in aspen hill, i'm kevin lewis, abc7 news. nancy: thank you. i have a head at 4:00, abc7 live on the eastern shore as communities clean-up after a tornado hit the area. michelle: the storm that hit the

has arts they show off. but now they have a fundraising exhibit that is called k9 for cops to help support the family of police officers killed or injured in the line of duty. very nice. they will be up until labor day. i love the glasses. nancy: absolutely! developing now a tenth person died after a horrific case of human smuggling in san antonio were up to -- where up to 100 people were found inside a tractor trailer. michelle: today, the man that was driving the truck appearing in federal court. danya bacchus with where the investigation is headed next. danya: immigration say as many as 100 immigrants were crammed in tractor trailer, the air conditioning not working. parked outside a san antonio wal-mart. dozens suffering from the intense triple-digit heat. >> folks were literally baking in the heat of texas sun. danya: today the driver 60-year-old james bradley of florida was in federal court. his criminal complaint detailing the treacherous journey tha

dead. one person on board telling investigators there was a hole in the trailer wall to provide ventilation and they took turn breathing from the hole. and that people were hitting the trailer walls and making noise to get the drive ears attention but the federal investigators say bradley never stopped. also according to the complaint the driver told authorities he did not know anyone was in the trailer until he got out of the truck at wal-mart. saying that he opened trailer after hearing banging inside. apparently did not call 911 even after he found out at least one person was dead. >> these people were in the trailer without any sign of any type of water. you are looking at a lot of heat stroke, dehydration. danya: the immigrants were reportedly from mexico and central america and the complaint says they paid thousands to get to san antonio and other destinations. one saying he paid $5,500 to cross to laredo and be smuggled. officials say 30 people including two people were rushed to the hospital. some suffering from

brain injuries. wal-mart employee called 911 when he spotted a disoriented man desperate for water. the suspected smuggler james bradley could face life in prison or death penalty. immigration is searching for anyone else involved in the operation. in san antonio, texas, danya bacchus, abc7 news. nancy: 17 people meantime rescued after being stranded by flash flooding in arizona. heavy weekend rains triggering floods. 15 of the 17 were rescued last night. the other two were saved this morning. it's been a tough time in that state. so, eight days ago a flash flood killed ten members of an extended family about 200 miles from where sunday's flood happened. michelle: near chicago, progress tonight after two weeks of severe flooding there. the fox river is starting to recede after cresting at a record high. topping 13 feet. it has been above flood stage for more than two weeks. hundred of volunteers filled 40,000 sand bags to keep the waters at

as well where the residents recover after the floodwaters were so strong they washed houses away. one man says he woke up to find his whole house afloat. along with the family. the water from the ohio river pushed the home off the foundation. and washed it downstream. michelle: thousands on delmarva are without power. most on kent island after the area was slammed by a possible tornado. some of the hardest hit areas include the community in stevensville where several new homes were leveled. officials say winds were gusting as strong as 80 miles per hour. no major injuries have been reported. boy, this was a busy weather weekend. steve: it was! tornado warning near fredericksburg. that was saturday around 6:30. then last night it was relatively quiet. until 10:00. then the storms started to erupt. we had active severe thunderstorm warnings for us late in the night. the tornado warning eventually issued way past

a lot of people were sleeping. it's a much different story out there now. we are looking at relatively nice late afternoon, early everything across the d.m.v. minus showers. this right now is looking at the belle haven country club in alexandria. puffy clouds. it's dry. at least right now. if you have plans for the evening. watchful eye in the sky. showers are likely. it feels like temperatures we can't get rid of it. not yet. we are almost there. tomorrow will feel better. it feels like 98 in leesburg. 93 at reagan national. 96 in fredericksburg. cooler five north and west of us. there are sprinkles inside the beltway. entering the beltway. likely slowing things down a little bit around mclean area to the 270/495 spur. in the next ten minutes with the city of fairfax looking at

devastation. the roof and the siding torn off of the building. this is a terrifying situation for people who live in the complex. an oak believed to be 500 years old. twist and torn apart. the homes pelted by branches and buried by fallen trees. >> it's hard. the place i grew up is basically covered. >> the storm tore through this section of kent island fast with force and furry. >> we got the weather alert and we got a tornado alert in minutes. there wasn't a lot of time to prepare. >> now begins clean-up. for those who lost so much they take comfort in knowing it could have been much worse. >> we are all safe. we are all alive. stephen: that sentiment echoes here at the townhome development. this is the roof

where a family with a small child, described as a baby, lives and they said as soon as the tornado passed they raced outside and they focused on that particular town home and the relief surged through the community when they saw the family holding the baby come staggers outs of the home. reporting live, stephen tschida, abc7 news. jonathan: thank you very much. one of the concerns here for a lot of folks is they don't have any power. that is a big concern. i can tell you this this is reassuring. we have seen a number of the convoys of the utility companies coming in the area to bring with them the phone pole and the crane. they have to take down the phone poles snapped. pull it out, take the wire away with them. put in new phonal poles and run new wire. i talked to the guy from verizon who said it could take two days to perhaps a week. verizon is important because on the poles they run not just verizon, they run the power. so folks have no air

michelle: hall of states honor each state with the flag hangs from the ceiling but one flag is wrong. ryan hughes shows us what one eagle-eyed visitor to the kennedy center spotted. ryan: you know it's a popular spot. the kennedy center. 5 million people passed through the hall of states each year. that is a lot of eyes. the flags are washed and inspected but a utah native who noticed the date on the flag was wrong. ryan martin is originally from salt lake city area. he went to the hall of state to find the utah flag. he realized something was off. he now lives in fairfax county. when he went back

the person caring for the child did not return to look for the child until an hour after leaving the food court. last friday, the 38-year-old woman turned herself in to authorities. this happened last monday. a custodian noticed the boy sleeping in his stroller all alone. that person called security and they called the police. an hour later as the police were investigating they say that crystal lundy returned to the scene. she is the program director of a daycare program from the ebenezer christian academy in woodbridge. the other adults and children were on the trip to the mall last monday. thigh believe she
