top snowfall in baltimore nearing 30 inches of snow. a lot of 30 inch plus totals through parts of allowed in, frederick county virginia, even in the eastern panhandle of west virginia. one report in shepherdstown a 40 inches of snow. we will be dealing with the deep dig over the next few days. this sunshine is going to help. every thing will refreeze with temperatures in the teens. jacqui jeras will be back with more. over to julie. crews have been doing a good job. i would think that those people should be staying put today. julie: these crews have a lot of snow to get out of the way. if you are on the roads they cannot really move it because you are in the way. we start off in virginia. 395 near washington boulevard. in some areas you could see pavement. the roads are more narrow than what you're used to simply because you have the snow pushed
8:03 am
over to the left and right and really know where to put it. other equipment will be needed to remove the snow completely. until that happens, proceed with caution. anything that looks wet will be frozen ice or black ice. the road being narrow, if you hit it at the wrong speed it could send you into a tailspin. kenilworth avenue, you can see some pavement headed back toward the 11th street bridge. south capitol street, this ramp coming inbound toward the douglas bridge. nice coating of ice and snow. pavement there. you have to proceed with caution . slow down until you get an idea of what conditions are like. bree carter said in some areas she could see pavement but in others they could feel that chunky snow underneath the wheels of the car. that was causing slick conditions. bree: you can see we have a major snowplow train that is
8:04 am
happening here right now in the southbound lanes of 270. we have seen more than a dozen plows, one coming after another. take a look at the left side of your screen come at you should be able to see some of them making their way through. we have some traffic on the northbound side of 270 and pavement starting to show but just in front of mobile track 7. all we see is what appears to be ice on the roads, right over the line marker. it looks a little slick as well. plow trains will move forward along 270. those trains continuing on the left side of the roadway. it has been the difference in terms of where you are driving on the road. here, just in front of us, you can see pavement we are starting to see mixed in. crews have been doing a fantastic job working around the clock to get it cleared. a couple miles back down on 270 we were in the thick of it.
8:05 am
a lot of thick snow and ice still underneath the tires. you can hear and feel it. we were talking about it feeling like you are driving down a dirt, gravel road because of the amount of buildup there is underneath the tires on the roadway. we will continue to monitor conditions. larry: 8:05. we have been talking about can ocean -- about kit o'shea -- taking assignments to a new level. outside cafe rosslyn. autria: it is a tough day for you guys. kidd: we had to be in the element yesterday. jummy: and still find a way to stay warm. kidd: mimosas this morning. a different story than yesterday at this time. that is when stuff started to get really bad.
8:06 am
jummy: before we had on hats gloves scarves, being whipped with freezing rain, snow mixture. kidd: now we are down to two layers. jummy: the activity is picking up out here as well. we just saw a couple walked into the building. going to cvs. they have their nfl gear on. it is sunday. a normal sunday around here. kidd: hopefully if we can dig out. we asked if anybody else was having the most is this early with us and julie sent me this picture. she is watching. also having mimosas with us as well. we were not the only ones. i said, can we found one person. jummy: julie said yesterday she was making homemade dark and stormy's which apparently is some sort of ginger beer concoction. the sun is coming back out. kidd: part of our coverage has
8:07 am
included the reggie behind us -- the red jeep behind us. at 4:00 a.m. this was stuck. jummy: the guy was so nice. i'm shui had gotten to talk to him so you guys could have seen him on air. he was trying to help people out. kidd: he admitted he had not replaced the clutch since 2008. it made it this far. the jeep did well until the snowstorm. this is not the only jeep that has gotten stuck outside our studios. this video that we shot, just around the corner from the red jeep. we have a white jeep that is also stuck in the snow. jummy: i don't want to say anythingjummy: because i'm sure we have jeep that advertises with us. kidd: yesterday people were posting. it is not jeep if you do not know how to drive your jeep.
8:08 am
i think it is a good story to say if the jeep cannot get through it, your honda civic cannot either. jummy: keep it parked. mine is parked at home. everyone is parked at home. kidd: one more day. give crews the day to clean things up and hopefully things will be back to normal tomorrow. even just walking here today yesterday in the middle the blizzard could not walk on the sidewalk. today most of the sidewalks are clear. jummy: are you able to pan down? you can see around us, this is pretty good right here. you can walk on this. you want to be careful. if you have to head back to work tomorrow -- we will be right back here. the sidewalks for the most part seem to be clear. kidd: we found one person dragging mimosas. let's see if we can find three other people that are up with us this morning. post-up was at mimosa's and two

day-old frozen pizza. jummy: gets no better. autria: it might be frozen the longer you guys stay out. live out there in what is apparently the bermuda triangle. they venture into rosslyn apparently they do not leave. larry: do not come here because you will find yourself stranded, clearly. abc 7 has been with you 20 47 before and during this historic lizard. you made the right choice to watch us because we were the only station to stay on the air around the clock. we will be with you as we dig out together. stormwatch team. we are always here every morning in the weekday. nice to be here over the weekend. autria: you enjoy that. we will be right back.

jacqui: i want to give you an overview of the storm system and our blizzard of 2016. lots of systems to -- lots of things develop. we got hammered for 36 hours over d.c. with heavy snowfall amounts. this storm system moves up the coast. we are dealing with sunshine across the region. to give you an idea of what has happened not just here but in other parts of the country, we said we were going to be the bull's-eye. this is a map from the national weather service showing snowfall accumulation for this dark gray area. as you head up toward new york city, they actually got more than we did at reagan international. 20 inches in philadelphia. boston getting off easy with six
8:13 am
inches of snowfall. this triples the whole megalopolis. check with your air carrier because it will take a while to catch up from the storm system. pictures continue to come in. a huge thank you. i had so many e-mails with pictures of everybody that a kind of locked up my system. thank you for your help and support and playing weather person. this photo from jim moore in alexandria. it goes almost all the way up to their bodies. the snow plows sometimes get stuck and this one coming in from silver spring, you can see crews trying to clear the streets off. this is kind of a bummer. this one from michael. a false alarm in alexandria, virginia. 5:30 this morning everyone in his apartment building had to evacuate because fire alarms were going off. it was a false alarm and the fire department came.
8:14 am
they got in and out ok but everybody was cold. lots of sunshine can be expected today. a great day for building your big snowman. you may have to get one of the spray water bottles because it is like fluffy snow and that will help the snow stick together. make sure you bundle up for sure. temperatures are going to be in the middle 30's. sunny and cold today. mid-30's feeling like mid-20's. tonight is going to cool down with clear skies. that will allow temperatures to drop. suburbs to be down into single digits. more like teens downtown. look for temperatures in the upper 30's a low 40's. maybe a few showers warming up for that on tuesday. freezing temperatures overnight. falling temperatures during the day. did you see that fire truck? julie: i did. we saw a couple early this
8:15 am
morning as we were walking from the hotel trying to help people that were unfortunately stranded on snowbanks. here at colesville road, reports of one vehicle stopped and stuck in the snow. i think whatever was here has been able to move on. jackie was wrapping up her forecast. we also saw a plow train coming through here. we are starting to see pavement but the roadway, more narrow than what you are used to. we hope to see over the next couple of days anything that looks wet is icy. that will costs look spots. -- that will cost slick spots. a little bit of ice in the roadway can send you into a spin. let the crews get out and clear a path for you. on the top wretch at silver spring. let's move to our cameras. -- on the top stretch at silver spring. let's move to our cameras. let it's been through.

8:20 am
having a camera come up to your front yard at 7:00 in the morning. >> we were up anyway. what has it been like for you guys as a family to endure this blizzard? >> a great opportunity to spend time with each other. just share in the experience. memorable life events. i remember growing up in new york for big storms. suzanne: you have been able to stay ahead of the storm. how many times have you been out? how much time have you spent? >> a couple of hours combined. i have a dedicated work staff here. suzanne: your cars are pretty well buried in. i know you need to get to work. are you working tomorrow? >> off the schedule for this one. i worked the one in 2010. this year i have been able to be home with my family. plenty of coworkers are staying in hotels at nearby hospitals in making a great effort for the community. suzanne: what is your plan as far as being -- what do you need to be -- what do you think is
8:21 am
the realistic? suzanne: i know we haven't -- >> hopefully the road will be cleared by the time i needed at the hospital. suzanne: jesse, thank you for talking to me. this is going to be a job in its own right to dig out and if you look over here to the left you can see -- if you look toward the street, you can see the driveway, his driveway is completely snowed in. you may get the car out from under all of this snow but it will be hard to get into the street. one story of folks trying to cope and dig out. autria: he may wish you were at the hospital today. his work is cut out for him. suzanne has been doing a good job of reminding everyone of the laws when it comes to -- as she mentioned you have 24 hours in the district to get your sidewalk cleared off and get those cars unburied. it is against the law to try and
8:22 am
save a space whenever you do get your car out. do not put the cones up or the lawn chairs. larry: do not get mad when someone takes your spot because it is not your spot. good advice. great information. from a suburban neighborhood out to 270 where there are all kinds of problems. brianne carter checking out the roads. brianne: 270 southbound, the front of mobile track seven and you can see we are seeing pavement just within the past half hour. we saw a massive snow plow train. 12 the 20 in a row working to push this snow to the side. it is a difference, one lane you see more of the pavement, another side, more snowpack. another view from the back of mobile track seven. you can get a sense of what we're dealing with on the roads. they just reopened shortly after
8:23 am
7:00 this morning after working to clear a lot of this snow overnight. the issue now remains that some of those exits, to be of get off. while those are clear, very snowy and much more accumulations sitting on the roadways. you will not be able to move as freely between the local lanes and the local lanes onto 70 because -- the mainland and the local lanes on 270. most of the exits we looked at there is a clearing but it is going to be more treacherous than it would be. a sun and the shade, the difference that is making at this hour, anywhere there is shade, we are seeing shiny spots on the roads. that will be the potential for ice on the roads. that's going to be the concern as we head into tonight. temperatures going to get back down.
8:24 am
something the crews will be watching out for as we head into tomorrow. back to you guys. autria: you can see the glare they are dealing with as crews try to remove that. this is from our studios in rosslyn looking out in arlington. this is what a lot of officials have been talking about as well as trying to dig out, being aware of the snow that has been compacted on roofs that could start to fall. larry: we will hit 37 today and be in the 30's for the next several days so we will see some of this as this begins to melt. overnight freeze. on the other side, maybe actually some shovelers. we cannot quite see. it is like a terrace right there. behind that, the condos in the rosslyn area. autria: look out below. larry: hopefully we have someone down below warning anyone walking by. that makes sense. like two areas. autria: heads up if you're
8:25 am
walking through the rosslyn area. coming up, especially edition of

>> good morning washington, on your side. autria: 8:27 is your time. if you plan on getting out today , which we do not encourage you to do, this is what you will be looking at. roads that are slowly but surely getting plowed throughout the region. larry: that is actually a pretty shop. t. now comes the massive cleanup. autria: we have the largest stormwatch team in the dmv and we have been on your side, on air, nonstop coverage since friday at noon when the first flakes fell.
8:28 am
we all got started together on this. we are on the other side now. larry: high five. autria: we already have one school closure tomorrow. the university of maryland was supposed to start their spring semester on monday but they will be closed instead. most school districts around the region have not yet announced plans or checked in with us yet for tomorrow. don't be surprised if your kids and up with another snow day. be sure to sign up for our school closing text alerts to find out the minute your school is closed. you can head over to our website wjla.com and click on the school closings tab at the top of the page. larry: let's go to our phone line. kimberly gibbs, spokesperson for metropolitan airport authority. thank you for joining us. no flights today. what is the status? >> there are no flights today. our snow teams have been out through the overnight hours, clearing the roadways and
8:29 am
runways and parking lots try to get back to operations. we are evaluating conditions and we will make a determination as to when the roadways -- when the runways can reopen safely. autria: i understand that the initial goal was to try and have things operational at reagan around noon tomorrow. is that seeming feasible? kimberly: we are evaluating conditions. we have not made a determination of when operations will continue at this point. larry: how difficult has it been for your crews? a special set of circumstances dealing with airports to try to go through and keep everything cleared. at the same time while it is still snowing and blowing. now we have a sheet of ice covering everything. kimberly: yesterday was a challenge. we were in blizzard like conditions through most of the afternoon. our teams did remain out to clear the runways.
8:30 am
we are doing that now. autria: so they were able to continue to do some of the plowing during the height of this? kimberly: circumstances dealing with some of the snow teams had to pull back because of conditions giving hazardous. -- getting hazardous. our priority is the safety of employees and passengers. some of the teams did pull back for their safety. larry: snow removal is one thing . getting the runways ready is something else. at what point will you be able to treat those runways? at what point do you hope to make a determination in terms of when you can get back to full service? kimberly: we will evaluate conditions throughout the day and make that determination as soon as we can. autria: spokesperson with the metropolitan airport authority. we appreciate you taking time to

speak with us this morning. we have breaking news this morning. news chopper 7 over the scene of a house fire. we have limited information about what is happening here. crews are on the scene working to knock this fire down. belfour. plant -- flames to coming out of the top of the roof. this does not make it easy for crews to try to respond to a house fire in the middle of trying to dig out from a blizzard. take a look at that. firefighter is trying to walk through knee-deep snow to get to this house fire so that they can put this out as the smoke wafts it looks like the roof is fully engulfed. larry: we have to pull back and kind of moves around again getting out of the path of smoke. that may be a fully engaged fire in the roof. trying to get through that
8:32 am
knee-deep or deeper snow. fort belvoir this morning. crews on scene this morning. it is so important as you are shoveling, shovel out your fire hydrant. make sure it is clear and visible so if you have an emergency, responders can find that quickly and get to work as soon as possible. autria: this also looks like a huge complex. multiple homes possibly involved. fort belvoir region. we will get more information about this. news chopper 7 will stay above the scene. we will come back with more information. jacqui: so cold for the firefighters being out there. wind chills in the single digits and lower teens. great tip from larry to clear out your fire hydrant as well. another tip, firefighters might have a hard time finding your address. if you have it on your street curb in front of your house
8:33 am
make sure you clear that off in case you end up having an emergency. here's a look at how much snow they will be expecting through today. you can see the numbers come incredible. more than 40 inches in the panhandle of west virginia. lots of two foot numbers west of d.c.. almost 30 inches at dulles airport. i want to walk you through what we will be looking for throughout the day today. this storm system come out of here. wind is coming down. the big event is over and done with and the cleanup, you can see this white colored everything in d.c. temperature is 24 degrees. we have a dew point at nine. keep that in mind, the air is very dry. we are thinking about chap and that kind of thing for today as

8:36 am
tweeting out. you can see there is pavement. that is what your going to run into if you're out on the roads. mobile track seven from 270 checking out this drive and coming up on not sure if they're going north or south. we do have the plows that are making their way along to 70. overnight we had to completely shut down to start clearing a path. it looks at they are northbound. these crews are making their way north of clarksburg. you can see they have the front ends pushing snow to the north's -- to the west -- to the left side of the roadway. you have people that are out on the roads trying to pass the plows. let them do their thing. let them give you good traction. stay out of their way. that is what every jurisdiction is asking. that you let the plows start making room so we can get you back to work and school in those kinds of things by monday or tuesday afternoon. a quick peek at what else we have on the road.
8:37 am
traveling in virginia along 95 you will find the lanes here have been treated but still are more narrow than what you are used to. we have reports of some stalled vehicles. that is our traffic watch. larry: a live look at that house fire in half fort belvoir -- in fort belvoir. possibly the snow on top of the house might have collapsed. they fully engaged fire in the attic of a home. autria: news chopper seven is over the seam. the man behind the camera is reporting this was a second alarm fire which means multiple agencies had to be brought in to knock it down. this is located on roundabout way in fort belvoir. just an update to give you more of a location or an idea of where this is. it appears that this would be
8:38 am
some sort of series of row houses or multiple units that are affected here, not just one home. larry: that roof has collapsed. before we went to the weather in traffic that had not been the case but in the last five or six minutes that roof now has collapsed. autria: crews out walking around in knee-deep snow trying to tackle this. we will stay on top of this and bring updates as soon as they happen. we want to get to our blizzard coverage and diane cho has made it to silver spring, maryland. how was that commute? diane: we got here eventually. we came in on 66 and took 17th into d.c. and got on connecticut to get on the beltway. during the entire duration, most of those roads are pretty passable i have to admit a lot of the side streets we saw along the way were definitely not. a soon as we got on the beltway
8:39 am
heading toward silver spring, there were parts of it where we saw sheets of ice underneath the snow. you want to be careful if you do venture out. if not, try to stay home. we are along georgia avenue right now. a few cars coming in going. this has been pretty much the case since we have been here for the last five to 10 minutes. you can see there is this slushy snow on the ground and that is what we saw the entire way here. on the way here we saw a couple of gas stations including one in d.c. and one just across the way from where we are now that was completely covered in snow in the parking lot. it looks like it had not been touched since the snow first came on the ground. back to you guys. autria: thank you, diane. larry: moving right along. autria: 8:39 which means it is time for kidd o'shea. he has been hard at work sipping mimosas. tough day on the job. larry: even two day-old pizza.

[applause] kidd: that might be the only thing open right now in arlington. you can start shopping. things are starting to open up again. this morning we are talking about what is open. take a look behind me at this building in arlington where crews are up on top of the roof pushing snow off. probably seeing a lot of that today and tomorrow. as that heavy snow sitting up there, they try to get it off the roof. as the sun comes up and temperatures warm, we will have to watch for that. you have been showing us great pictures of what is going on outside your homes. we want to show you what is going on outside our studios. two of the umbrellas that were
8:41 am
not taken in before the blizzard have kind of fallen in our top of each other and are a mess. if you do not bring your pet at your furniture in you may be dealing with the same thing this morning -- if you do not bring your patio furniture in you may be dealing with the same thing this morning. if you take a look, there is a woman crossing the street and taking a picture of that red jeep that has been there for over 24 hours now. that gentleman, early yesterday morning, was trying to help a friend out and was driving home when he saw one of our trucks stuck and try to help us. s when he got stuck in glue the clutch out on his jeep. he was running on the original clutch. he said, i guess it is time to get a new clutch. he gave up waiting for took trucks to come and ended up staying at a hotel last night. he is happy he stayed safe. we have not seen police come by to ticket him.
8:42 am
we hope that does not happen. it is kind of now a famous jeep. here is another person coming by to take a picture of the reggie. best of the red jeep. -- the red jeep. he should be out here pretty soon your probably still sleeping but maybe he will be out soon. we will send it back into you guys. autria: this guy is a local celeb now. larry: go out and get your 15 seconds. 5:00 yesterday morning. we have been talking about it ever since. i went on twitter and put a picture of that up #red jeep. trying to get a trending. abc 7 larry. get it out there. autria: the iconic image. there it is. larry: the unintentional fried. shrine.

autria: the blizzard watches over and now it is time for the big dig. we will have more coming up on your sunday morning.
8:44 am
8:45 am
larry: the story we're following, breaking news, the roof now collapsing on that massive house fire that -- fort belvoir, virginia. we saw the firefighters really trying to work through knee-deep snow trying to get around this. we show this about 10 minutes ago, the roof was intact. since then it has collapsed. fires are fully engaged throughout the attic of that large home. the roof has collapsed a few moments ago. we're working on detailing this for you and we will get this to you as soon as possible. we do not know if there's anyone inside.
8:46 am
the crews, trying to work through the snow and these issues. it is so important to stay off the roads, let emergency personnel and road personnel do their work to try and clear the roads and if you can help them out again as you are shoveling ensure you clear out the area around your fire hydrant close by. make sure if you have an emergency, it takes a few moments. that way firefighters can find the hydrant quickly and get to work. in fort belvoir, we will watch this for you here as we continue. let's go over to jacqui jeras for an update on the forecast. stormwatch is over, blizzard is over. now it is post blizzard. jacqui: we have sunshine for it. our temperatures are cold and they will be chilly through the day today. the clean sweep across the

8:48 am
26.3. we will be drive through the day today. the sun will be out. make sure you have your sunglasses as the sunshine off of that snow, it creates a glare and can hurt your eyes. temperatures should be reaching the middle 30's. we want a slow thaw. tomorrow some people might be having to head back to work. this is what we are expecting for tomorrow. lots of sunshine. fewer clouds around. melting temperatures in the upper 30's. close to the 40 degree mark. it is tough to get beyond the 40 degree mark because that snow acts as a refrigerator and keeps cold. down the line, no big storms so at least we have that to look forward to. julie: crews are out this morning. allow trains in effect especially along to 70. -- especially along 270.

brianne: germantown area along 270. this live look of this massive plow train. trying to get these roads cleared quickly and they are serious about this. we were talking more than a dozen of these plows that are out here trying to push the snow. one of the other things we noticed as well, they have smaller clouds -- smaller plows outworking to get exit rants clear. while these go by they have a smaller one that goes through. these guys continue on down the road. we are talking more than dozen of them here in a line and while they are slowing down traffic that is the good thing because we are also seeing slick spots. if you notice to our left you can see some of those cars that are on the road as well behind these trucks and that is what officials are asking commuters not to do.

to give these guys the space they need to do their job. the traffic mixed in with us as well. they are asking people to not do this. to give crews the need to get all of the snow off the road as quickly as possible. 7:15 after the road reopeng shut down all away to the beltway and now they are trying to get things done. one of the other things we noticed is the sun starting to help with that but in the shady areas along 270 it is still snowpack and we are starting to see that shiny section come through the ice. we will continue to monitor road conditions. autria: there is a thing called do not crowd the plow. facebook here, you just have a big, what is going on. where is it that you have to go that is so important? this guy trying to get over here, about a half inch of snow. it is mind-boggling right now.

this plow is not moving. it does not matter where you try to go you will not get there fast. these crews are out there to make space for you, to give you traction and if you guys are doing more harm than good. the best thing you can do is get behind the plow trains. it is actually a good thing. give yourself distance. that is what they are therefore. plowing out way to give you traction. to try to pass them or crowd them, to put it bluntly, it is a stupid idea. we are looking at live pictures along 270. we will show you what else we have on the roads. if you are making your trip in virginia we still have some snowpack roads we are dealing with. crews have been overnight trying to clear a path. it treacherous because some areas you will find mountains of snow which will make it difficult to change lanes or make those left or right turns.
8:52 am
if you have to be out there this morning be prepared. some of the secondary roads have not seen a plow and you will see a plow for the next couple of days because the first priority is to take care of the major arteries first. you will find that the lanes are open. no travel spots to report north side of town as you travel between -- a good reminder from d.c. police to clear off the snow and ice from the hood, roof, windows and lights. you need to be seen if you have to be on the roads. larry: thanks for that. we are about one hour away from the big snowball fight in dupont circle. autria: he loves nothing more than a good snowball fight. larry: is that how you train for a snowball fight? >> i am having blizzard

a lot of writers expressed outrage over not understanding why the underground trains were suspended completely. has that been able to help you guys when it comes to getting the exposed lines clear? dan: i think anyone looking outside their window or door during the storm understands why no one should have been out. that is why the underground was closed. state of emergency. we also used that to park 350 railcars and protect them from the elements and that will help us restore some level of service faster than we otherwise would be able to. tweeting out pictures from our railyards. these are yardage pieces -- neither large pieces of equipment. you think about how much time it takes to dig out your car. multiply that by 80 feet for just one railcar and you have to multiply that by another 1200 railcars we have on the system. it is a herculean effort.
