recovering after an early- morning fire ripped through their home in northwest baltimore. kim dacey has details. >> i heard some yelling outside. i woke up and looked out of the window and saw the house on fire. >> that houses in the 300 block of south fulton avenue. firefighters got on the scene around 6:00 monday morning in hunt -- found heavy smoke and fire on the first floor. never say 2-year-old child, a young mother and grandmother lived in the home. -- neighbors say. >> all i heard was that a mother and her babies jumped out the window. >> fire officials confirmed a woman jumped out a second-floor window in the front of the house. the 2-year-old was thrown out a second-floor window in the back, followed by 21-year-old woman who jumped out the same window. officials are not sure if the toddler was caught or landed on

the ground, but seem to be ok. all three were taken to area hospitals for treatment or observation. >> i have a 2-year-old son, and it was just like so close to home. it was right across the street. >> fire officials are not sure if there were working smoke alarms in the house. fortunately, the fire did not spread to any other homes, but the investigation continues into what caused it. >> we have our fire investigators taking preliminary assessments into the cause of the fire. >> neighbors say their hearts go out to the family. >> i hope they are ok. i pray for them that they are ok. >> firefighters don't have a dollar estimate on the damage, but they consider the home a total loss. >> tonight police have identified a man murdered in a west baltimore barbershop over the weekend. 32-year-old dominick william holcomb was shot just before

7:00 friday evening. police say two masked men opened in -- walked in an open fire, also shooting another man. the second victim is expected to recover. the gunmen are still on the run. >> anne arundel county police are investigating two corn crop reset occurred within a half hour of each other at fast restaurant on the same lot. the first took place at this mcdonald's in linthicum. that was just after 7:40 friday evening. police a man about 6 foot tall wearing black gloves, black sunglasses, and a black ski mask pulled out a hand gun and demanded money and then took off. 20 minutes later, a man wearing similar clothing is the man -- used a gun to demand cash from the wendy's right across the street. police say is still too early to determine if the robberies are related. >> a catholic priest was removed from ministry calling to an arrest on an indecent exposure charge. according to the report, father

>> legendary football coach joe paterno passed away sunday after a battle with lung cancer. >> thousands turned up and for a candlelight vigil to remember the man who led their football team for nearly 50 years. michaud friends and has the latest on the life and death of joe paterno. >> a flood of emotions today along with memories. people paid tribute to a legendary coach joe paterno. >> a came to pin state in 1956. he was head coach, and we came up to all the games. >> bill is among hundreds who have stopped to pay their respects at the makeshift memorial just outside the penn state football stadium, where joe paterno statue stands tall,

and news of his death is still sinking in. >> i think everybody here is just very sad and with his passing. he was a great man. we all love him. he was penn state. he was everything for pennsylvania. >> barbara butcher is also a penn state graduate. she drove two hours with her daughter to honor a man she feels was wrongly fired in the wake of the gerry sandusky sex abuse trial jerry sandusky sex abuse trial. >> how his career ended here, i don't know if i'll ever get over that. >> paternal spent six decades at penn state and was head coach for 46 seasons until he was fired last fall. he lost his battle with lung cancer sunday. a public viewing is planned for tuesday and wednesday, followed by a private family funeral service. then on thursday, a public memorial will be held.

forecast with chief meteorologist tom tasselmyer. >> we have a little better precipitation today and for a while, with temperatures near the freezing point, some icy patches were round. we will see the temperatures coming up as we head through the night and into tomorrow. at the inner harbor, the temperature has barely changed. 39 for the lower today and 40 for the high. not much of the temperature swing at bwi marshall, either. 31, freezing in the early morning hours, 36 this afternoon. there were some icy patches around for awhile, but now even into southern pennsylvania you see temperatures above freezing. here is a sign of warmer air coming our way. up in the mounds that western maryland, 52 degrees. -- up in the mountains of western maryland. you can see elkins, west virginia, 56 degrees this

afternoon. all that will be coming our way. first, the warm air spread over the top of this cold air locked near the bottom. that will produce some fog and drizzle for the good part of the night. an indication that you will see some patchy areas of fog overnight tonight. patchy areas of drizzle and fog developing as we head toward the morning, but after that, the skies should try to clear up a little. it will scour out some of the low clouds and fog and we will get some sun back in here tomorrow. for tonight, areas of dense fog, visibility less than a quarter mile in spots. it will stay above freezing or get warmer tonight on the southwest winds, then turn partly cloudy tomorrow afternoon, getting into the 50's with westerly winds at 5-10 miles an hour. western maryland, 36 tomorrow as the clouds break up. maybe some evening rained or snow late on wednesday evening. the fog burns off to 53 degrees

on the eastern shore, 47 on wednesday. sunny to partly cloudy skies return for a couple of days. violent weather to the south, nasty thunderstorms coming out of arkansas, western tennessee and northern alabama. now the storms are closer to the gulf coast. as the front moves off the coast, an area of high pressure will try to settle in and the weather will quiet down briefly. this area of high pressure will try to warm things up. of to the west, there is a new storm. some of that shows up in the extended forecast. we will see the shower start to approach our area sometime late on thursday. 52 tomorrow after some morning fog, pre-40's with some sunshine on wednesday, showers likely thursday, tapering off friday morning. chillier over the weekend with a sprinkling of rain possible saturday, and a couple of flurries possible on sunday and monday. >> congresswoman gabrielle giffords is making her final

>> live, local, late-breaking. 11 news at 5:00 continues now. >> no more service bars wall behind bars. and the technology aims to make it impossible for inmates to use telephones while in prison. contraband in the nation's prisons has long been something security forces have battled. >> american companies providing new technology to protect cell phones. mr. robinson just got a look at the technology and joins us with more on how it works. >> congress that is not enough to just turn off cell service or jam at a correctional facilities like the one behind me here at central booking. they say need to get hold of the

cell phone itself. cell phones in the hands of inmates can create all kinds of security breaches. the federal government says more than 21,000 telephones for confiscated in 2010 from inmates in correctional facilities nationwide. authorities say inmates use the funds to run drugs and intimidate witnesses. >> over the last few years, we have heard stories about people from inside prisons being able to make a call outside in terms of intimidating a witness or some other activity. >> congressman john sarbanes chordate columbia maryland company that says it has a technology called cell hound. >> as soon as the call is made, someone in the prison will know that a call has been made. they can interdict the phone at a time of their choosing.

>> the jamming creates pollution so that calls cannot be made in or out of prison. he said just turning off the cell phone service is not enough, especially with smart phones. >> they can be used as a camera, video recorder, and create text. the memory card can be removed and carried out under somebody stone -- under somebody's t ongue. >> is being used by some businesses that want to know if their employees are on their own during critical jobs when they should not be. there is no word on whether any facilities here in maryland will be using this new technology called cell hound.

year. if convicted, he could receive three years in prison and $1,000 fine. his next court appearance is set for march 6. two women and a toddler or recovering tonight after an early-morning fire ripped into their home in southwest baltimore. it happen on south fulton avenue around 6:00 this morning. the three victims escaped by jumping out of a second story window. they were taken to inez's -- nearby hospital for treatment observation. an investigation is underway work crews took nearly an hour to put out a blaze that started around 7:00. escalated to two alarms. everyone in sight at the time made it out. >> family and friends gathered to remember miss mary hines. she was retired school teacher and principal in the baltimore school system. she was found murdered in her

east baltimore home earlier this month. >> miss mary hines was a member of the eastern united methodist church here in east baltimore for over 50 years. she taught sunday school here. today, family and friends came to eastern united methodist church to honored miss mary hines. could she was a person that dave and dave and dave. unconditionally -- that gave and gave. nothing bad could be said about her. >> such a tragedy. >> miss mary lost her life on january 5 in what investigators first thought was a fire in her home. an autopsy later determined that she had been stabbed to death. police have made no arrests in this case.

today's memorial service was to honor all the good she had done in her life. a teacher and principal and church members say she was a fine person. >> she was my third grade teacher. she was a strong disciplinarian who gave a lot of love, and i will always remember her for that. >> miss mary hines will never be forgotten. her legacy will go on. it has just begun. we will miss her dearly, and we pray that -- she was truly a pleasant person. >> a political scramble is about to begin in arizona, as congresswoman gabrielle giffords announces her decision to step down from office. in a video release sunday, she said she plans to resign this week to focus on her health. earlier in the day she wrapped up perks congress event the issue is hosting an event last year in february when she was shot in the head and seven others were killed. a three-term democrat, her decision to step down creates an opportunity for a republican to pick up a seat in the house.

>> the supreme court says police must get a search warrant before using gps technology to track down criminal suspects. the ruling came down today in the case of the united states versus jones, a nightclub owner convicted of drug conspiracy. the court overturned the conviction because police did not have a warrant when they installed a gps device on the suspects victim and track their movements for a month. johns was linked to a suburban house used to stash money and drugs. he was sentenced to life in prison before that decision was overturned. >> chances are when you hear the word price line, you think of captain kirk. >> the companies latest campaign involves killing him. we'll explain, coming up. but more than 100 people are injured, at least two people are dead, and the waste -- in the wake of destructive storms in the country. we will look at the aftermath, straight ahead. >> dense fog and warmer weather

but we don't have much to complain about. a few slippery spots over the weekend, but the mid-atlantic is getting by ok as the system works its way through. a lot of dry real estate off to the west of us and that should settle in here tomorrow. 40 at the inner harbor, 36 at bwi marshall. just the five-degree swing at the airport. we have really been stuck there all day long. 11.5 inches of snow came down on january 23 back in 1985. 40 degrees in downtown baltimore, the warmest of the day so far. above freezing in southern pennsylvania and even western maryland, not only above freezing but warmer than we are. up to 50 now at oakland, 46 at frostburg. slowly the chilly air gets pushed out, the drizzle and fog

overnight, some of it should be dense. it will clear out tomorrow and we will get some sunshine. 30's to nine to around 40. temperatures steadily rising over night. tomorrow with some sun breaking through, highs of 50-55 degrees. well above freezing, a mix of clouds and son tuesday and wednesday in the mountains. maybe some rain or snow getting into the mounds wednesday night. 54 brown ocean city as the fog burns of tomorrow morning. out on the bay, winds from the west with waves about 1 foot. they water temperatures in the upper 30's to around 40. affront to our west is triggering stormy weather on the gulf coast. it will push offshore tomorrow, allowing drier westerly winds to come in. keep an eye on the western storm, a lot of rain for that football game out there
