nine pictionary host jerry o'connell is here in our studio this morning. i'm going head to head with gasia cell and pam for some fun. live from chat london square. this morning's onto but not. and good morning. this may look like tahoe, but this is actually mount diablo for the walnut creek camera that we turned to face the mountain there. yeah, that's snow, and it's snow and some of the barrier peaks this morning, and it's unusual last time. i remember snow like this cash. it's been a long time because we haven't had the rain, too. even though it's been cold. we haven't had that sort of rain to make the snow. so this is unusual. ktvu viewers, by the way, have been sending us amazing photos and videos of the snow and receive some new video . just within the past few hours. there's no has really been piling up in clear lake in lake county community of about 120 miles north of san francisco

. there clear like this video was taken about 2 30 this morning. you can see the snow has covered several cars parked in a driveway there. and take a look at this. there was enough snow on the ground in palo alto for one man to break out his skis. viewer cody mccartney of san jose took these pictures of the skier at skyline boulevard and highway nine heading from saratoga into palo alto. you can see there was a pretty good layer of snow on the ground and the trees in the skyline. welcome to the nine and of course, it's a big deal for us. not so much for other parts of the country. but for us, this is a big deal. very big deal. and uh, you know if you wanted to know, but you can't drive up to lake tahoe, which you really can't because the rotating up there are impassable right now. why not conditions you can simply go up to tomato cobbler, or milpitas or hamilton's see it for yourself. especially for you know, barry and children were like an elementary school. this is their first real snow. i mean, steve paulson. it really is even those of us who've lived here for 100 years, right? we

still get excited over because it is out of the ordinary. i've only been here 95 for yourself. sorry yes. you have to go pretty pretty far back to find this much now, at least 20 years on some of these i'd have to go back and research this and that's something to do over the weekend. lake county. i think napa county, lake county, probably mendocino county and santa cruz mountains are vying for the most snow. i've lived in this home. this is misty faust for over 18 years, and this is the first that's just shy of seven inches of snow. that's a lot of snow. there's been 10 inches of snow up on how mountain multiple reports of 8 to 10 up in the lake county. of course, santa cruz mountains has just been hammered. allan rock 2.5 inches of rain. la honda 1.69 cassandra 1.67 castro valley had an inch and a half of rain. other rainfall totals can't feel it always does well, and this time they did again. 1.61 pleasant in 1 43 sandra fell 1 42 no valley and engine 38 103 months with over an interim dublin with over nature in san francisco and there as well in redwood city, 88 100 san francisco, by the way. set a

record low this morning of 39 degrees, breaking the old mark of 40 and 18 91. what makes that even doubly impressive if you will. they didn't do that. with calm conditions and clear skies. they did that with rain, wind and clouds to get down to 39 that tells you how cold this air masses mount davidson was 37 degrees. that's really cold for the city. when you i mean under clear conditions, that's cool. but when you have this system now is it slides south? it's on its way to central and southern california. so you're seeing a decrease to the north. i think you'll see a rapid decrease. there still be some wrapping back around the flow around. this is counterclockwise. so that was maybe send some activity up south north. but look at the brakes already showing up, so i think we've maxed out on a lot of this area's now to the south will start to take the brunt of this. although i again i want to see what happened. what lick observatory amount hamilton's could be 2 to 3 ft. up there. santa cruz mountains. you can see some holes in there, but still some snow doesn't mean they're done and it's a wetter snow and in the mountains. forget it. i mean, it is just

going to beat the band up there, so it's an off and on rainy friday cold, windy thunderstorms had some earlier it seems of tapered off thirties forties on the temps will be lucky to get out of the upper forties. many of these temps it is really beginning to light up now central california coast. los angeles san diego weather service issued their first blizzard warning ever for the mountains down off san diego for tomorrow. there's not a lot left for us here in this pattern, we'll get a break most of the rest of friday saturday. next system comes in sunday night. but then a stronger system comes in monday and tuesday. if you haven't heard, eighties closed, i mean, it's just it's a mess up there right now, but it's good a lot of snow on the way that's the good news and there's more on the way. in fact, i've seen some projections out the next two weeks of maybe 100 inches of snow being forecast. we are going to get rain. it just does not look to be excessive. at least not yet. you know, as we turn the page from february, going into march looks like marches coming in very active here forties fifties on the temps here, we'll get a break about half. i think most of saturday about half a sunday

light rain sunday night and another strong system cold one again monday tuesday. actual snow has been coming down in the east bay hills. take a look. some video we shot this morning of snow on. diablo it's a difficult place to get to this morning because the snow has been falling so hard. the thrill of snow brought many adventure seekers to the summit to see and feel the elements. yesterday one man brought his five year old daughter to the top of the mountain for wintertime adventure. for or drinking hot chocolate. i brought the camp stove up and bqe. we cooked it up in the back of the back at the forerunner. well, some people in the east gate dropped whatever they were doing and headed to the mountains. the moment they spotted all that, so we was working like one great and we saw like a lunchtime was knowing. that's what we came here after work. thank having fun taking pictures video. while park rangers expect to see even bigger crowds at higher elevations this weekend. the road through the park is closed

this morning because trees and wires are down. we're told the wet snow is causing trees to snap says more than 18,000. homes and businesses in the bay area are without power this morning due to this winter storm about 6500 of those customers are in the danville and alamo areas in contra costa county. in some parts of san mateo county. the power has been out for several days or learning parts of atherton. menlo park, east palo alto haven't had power since tuesday afternoon. pg and e. says it's doing everything possible to get the lights back on during this winter storm, the utility says it's dealing with hundreds of down trees that are bringing down power lines just about everywhere across the bay. dangerous driving conditions persist in the sierra interstate . 80 was close for much of yesterday. as of this morning. both directions of 80 are still closed from colfax to the nevada state line. caltrans reports 50 is open but would chain controls. however caltrans and the chp are saying, if you don't have to let ahead to lake tahoe or go to the sierra, don't go.

having a difficult time getting torino. maybe try to find a hotel if we can't get through. but tomorrow might be worse. we don't know. caltrans crews were out yesterday, using signs and cons to turn drivers away. but they say they snowing conditions are only expected to get worse as this winter storm sweeps over the sierra. if you were planning on heading to southern california today, you may need an alternate route. interstate five along the great bound is still closed in both directions due to the snowy road. still is blanketing parts of northern california and cloverdale and sonoma county. a steady snow has been falling in that area for the past several hours now, and you could see the snow blanketing several cars outside some homes and cloverdale snow has been causing some traffic problems in that area. a similar senior kelsey ville, lena murphy , sent us this photo. maybe a foot of snow actually piled up on those benches and the roof of that building. and we're always

stuff. this is some dense stuff here. this is some stuff that can either stall your car and it's also being pretty heavy on the trees and the power lines. we're seeing out here this morning. we been trying to get to angwin this morning because that's where everyone says most of the snow comes down really nicely, and it just looks beautiful. we wanted to get that beauty shot and we just haven't been able to do that. we've been trying to do that since about three o'clock this morning, in theave been down. trees here down power lines you see here down trees from where we're standing a little further down as well. i mean, look at this accumulation that we've been seeing on some of these branches that has been weighing heavy on these trees and power lines to herd trees go down and we have actually seen a tree. fall down. we've heard that #### walking that snapping some cars here. i think there's a home that's along this road here. some cars that have been here overnight have accumulated some snow on the windshield on the top of the car as well. i mean, you can just see just how much snow is still falling, and there was a point where there was snowfall kind of stopped and it was a lot

more calm, but it's been coming down again. we've been talking about some of those treacherous roadways, and we've seen several people such as the folks in this truck here coming up to where we are realizing what is beyond us, realizing what the power lines look like, and down trees look like and then trying to find a way to navigate to turn around here behind that truck, keith, i don't know if you can see from that vantage point. but behind that truck, we see some folks and what looks like a little bit of a four wheel with a dog out there as well. that has been the situation. of course. we've talked about the dangers. we have to talk about the dangers because you need to know that before you head out the door today, but so many people are talking about embracing this to having a little fun with it. one guy says that he has taken the day off of work today, mostly because he can't physically actually get to work safely. but he's taking the day off so you can enjoy it with his kids and his dog as well. so i, too i'm trying to find ways to have fun with it. so what i've done i've set up a pack of some whites there on that trash can have set up three snowballs. members

you have a lot more than oakland are showing up. oh yeah, we have people from sacramento from los angeles. some people come from vegas, with some people flying in from new york over the years. it's just grown greatly, so people come from all over, i think joy is contagious. joy is infectious and the best way and so once it started growing, i think people started coming from all over the place. the word is getting out. can we rewind back to the beginning as the founder ? how did you even think of putting together an event like this? and why a parade in particular i had left and then i came back to oakland. and when i came back, i just felt like there was something missing. the only time i was seeing a big gathering of us was protests was morning with sadness and like i think we deserve more than this. i think we deserve all of us together for celebration just for us, not an opposition of anything just because we are great. we are beautiful. we are excellent. we are creative. and then the parade. you know, part of it was inspired by pride very much, and i think there was something about the presence in the streets. there was where here. you know, we're shutting down downtown oakland or taking over and then the diversity you

can get within a parade. you have dancers. you have horses. you have cars. you have young people. old people. you have all roller skaters. you have all kinds of people, and there's something just really beauty. awful in my mind about that procession and that vision and what that could really say about our community. what do you say in particular when you see youngsters either taking part in the parade or being brought there by their parents? i wish i had that. i wish that when i was young, i had an experience like black joy parade where i can look up and be like black cowboys, because when i was a kid, i didn't have those kinds of things. i didn't have an oakland. yeah i grew up in sacramento and when i moved here, but even then, you just you didn't have diversity of heroes. you know, you had sort of certain kinds of people certain kind of career certain kind of arts. and i couldn't imagine being young and getting to go to black joy parade me like circus black people are in the circus. black people drive corvettes like this. just this beautiful array and i, you can see it on their eyes when they watch the parade. they're just it's like their whole imaginations and then their dreams and hopefully their futures are opened up. tell me a little bit about other than the

parade. what sort of things can we experienced so many things. so after the parade, there's a big, huge festival. there's i think five activation, so there's little joy that sponsored by black infant health, which is our presenting sponsor this year, little joys. space for kids talking about youngsters has bounce houses and face pain and all these really beautiful things and also black parents as well to connect. then there's healing village, which has yoga. it has team making you can come and learn to make your own tea blends your own aromatherapy staff. then we have black cultural zone, which is a skating rink. of course we have our bars. we have merged. we have food, and then we have two stages of performances. and i think you know george clinton parliament is their headliner. this year. everybody is that's a definitely multigenerational. my parents are very excited about this situation this year, so there's so much to do and like you said, it's rain or shine, and it's going to be such a beautiful event. do you ever think about what you hope that participants or just the viewers take with them? because your parade is once a year once a year, and we intentionally have it at the end of february? because we want to make sure that you know, black history month is always really beautiful. but then march comes

moving in with their adult children, according to the pew research center. 9% of multigenerational households are led by millennials whose parents have moved back in with them. that's up from 6% 20 years earlier. the reason cited are high housing costs and the growing need for help with childcare. i mean, i'll be honest, there was a time maybe 20 years ago in my life, i would have laughed at this idea. i was in my independent phase, but as i am with my two little boys,

100% of mom and dad wanted to move in open arms. my sister. my mom lives with my sister back east, so yeah, yeah. i mean, eventually should probably live with me and you know, at some point down the road, so that's fine. totally fine with me. my mom would let me move in. now if i said hey, can i move back in? some parents say no, you're on your own. she would. she would welcome it. would you let her move in? yeah really have a family. your mom move in. i mean , you know, hollis latinos get down. we you know, have multi family all over the place. she lives close anyway, so they it's cool, man. my mom is very cool. sure move into meet her one day, andre. yeah she likes all of us, right? mm hmm. let's move on to this story. the federal reserve's preferred inflation gauge rose last month at its fastest pace since june. the personal consumption expenditures price index rose 5.4% in january from a year earlier. that follows a 5.3 annual increase in december, analysts say could lead the fed to keep raising interest rates.

on average, americans are having trouble saving for emergencies. a new survey from bankrate dot com fines close to half of adults in the us have little to no emergency funds compared to a year ago, fluctuating economy and record high inflation has forced people to dip into their savings accounts or take on credit card debt in order to cover living costs, the survey found. millennials and gen z years are the least likely generations. to have emergency savings. the us government will stop sending money for groceries to nearly 30 million people who received extra aid during the pandemic. officials in 32 states are informing recipients that their extra food aid will end after this month's payment. 18 states have already stopped payment for more than 10 million people. the extra benefits will now be used for a new program that provides low income families with extra money to replace school meals during the summer. hundreds of low income families in sonoma county are set to receive $500 a month in a new trial of a new guaranteed income program aims to lessen financial stress for families with children under the age of

six. it follows a study that showed 52% of families in sonoma county with children struggle to make ends meet. the county received more than 6400 requests and will provide an approved request for 305 of those the test program will run for two years. also in sonoma county leaders will hold to community meetings to address the need for emergency housing. sides for people experiencing homelessness . this follows the announcement of a shelter crisis this week at a board of supervisors meeting. the first public meeting is later this afternoon at three o'clock. the second is monday at five. p.m. both around zoom meetings come after the county decided to clear an encampment on the joe rodeo to trail up in santa rosa for the third time since 2020. netflix is cutting subscription costs outside the us as a competition among streamers, sir girls internationally, netflix announced plans to cut subscription costs for 30 countries around the world. including indonesia, thailand, venezuela in kenya, moscato space company could go in the other direction for us subscribers. netflix executives said they are considering

cold. and snowy and rainy boy. it was a two hands on the wheel kind of drivin. but thankfully, as we go through this friday, things will begin to warm up. just a little in that crazy weather would clear out if just for a moment, you know, there's snow on the beach here in parts of northern california. i mean, really an amazing sight in crescent city yesterday along pebble beach drive right near the california oregon boundary, powerful waves lashing the snowy beach a mid latitude cyclones spinning off the west coast has also been spotted along other california beaches during this rare snowstorm. including the santa cruz beaches. i know when i saw that southern california had a blizzard warning, okay, i'm from here. but even that sounds weird. so i mean you to sell. this is kind of one of those things where we're like, wow, really? and i have to say people were asking me. is it really going to snow like at the grocery store and i go? yeah, it is. what what? time to get out the phone because if you don't put it on instagram, it didn't happen right on. people are

doing it. by the way. the first time i ever saw still was not that long ago, maybe eight years ago. okay, growing, you know, i'm from the caribbean. in and of course, and i grew up, you know? well you know the south so i never saw snow never traveled up here during the wintertime. and then one day i was in new york for work at another network and i was inside like staring out the window in this blizzard came down in times square. and someone staring at me and they're like, why are you staring so hard? i'm like i've never seen a snowstorm before. they were shocked manager at this point, okay, like they were like this cannot be real. but i guarantee a lot of people in florida. i'm not seeing the snow. yeah yeah, so it's pretty interesting, but i love it. i think it's i think it's awesome. yeah i love that story. all right, let's move to this story. now in the santa cruz mountains, snow and other will weather related problems have caused a traffic mess. highway. 17 is closed along with several other highways in the area, ktvu south bay reported just carries along highway. 17 ellis gatto's with the latest from there, jesse andre. i wish i was in the caribbean. right about now is whether it's probably a lot lot better. we're here on highway 17

at the closure of bear creek road just checked in with the chp. i'm told to get from here to santa cruz is two hours and you can't go this have to go tun around at this point. and go back. we'll have george show you the turnaround. did the backup and this is the turnaround? that's the backup traffic. that's the people that are headed southbound from san jose campbell lakatos headed down towards or headed south towards santa cruz exiting here at bear creek road being turned back around, you'll go back to one. oh, one. take one on one down to 1 29 and then over to the one and then back up. it is a long way to go. and here's the reason. let's take a look at our video snow as you've been hearing all morning, six inches of snow in the santa cruz mountains, pieces driving conditions are treacherous, and some drivers have become stuck on the highway. and surrounding roadways. bear creek road. it's

implemented, altitudes were experiencing snow with multiple vehicles spinouts at the lower altitudes. heavy rains as you can see, traffic backed up. and we have multiple trees down approximately 20 or more with at least as many vehicles off the roadway. okay sorry about that. so that that's a brief synopsis of the problem. here is the video that goes along with that synopsis. that's six inches of snow on 17. chp says driving conditions are treacherous. some people are stuck on the freeway and on the surrounding roads, bear creek road old santa cruz highway drivers have been coming by asking if they can use those roadways. no, you can't they're impassable. caltrans crews are in those areas. they're using chainsaws to try to cut down the down trees to get the motorists at least moving. we talked to one motorist earlier this morning. his name is richard lewis. you may have heard him and if you didn't you may want to listen to this. he says he

was headed home to san jose to santa cruz from san jose around midnight. he was on 17 1st. it was rain. rain turned to ice. the ice turned to snow, and then trees started falling. i was headed over back to santa cruz about maybe 11 30 midnight. and then the storm just hit so it was started with rain. hail before you know the road was frozen. there was a snow everywhere. i started filling out the big rig in front. we started peeling and i pulled over and i've just been stuck there for hours. and then a tree had just fall fell right on the road. right in front of my truck in the trees. you started falling and falling until someone finally came and rescued me. really this morning a jack and i ups big rig caused chaos on the roadway as well. that happened near redwood estates. they're still trying to clear that big rig one tow truck became stuck in the snow. tow trucks don't have front wheel drive. we've talked to other tow truck drivers. you said they wouldn't go up to the summit because of the fear of getting stuck in the snow. so we come

back. live here. bear creek road, and you see the sign with the roadways. can be icy roadway is closed. we've seen numerous drivers. at least we did before they closed it they were coming had gone up trying to use that as a detour and came right back down covered. the snow said it was not not gonna work so 17 closed. 35 closed nine closed. you're going to have to go the long way. if you want to get to santa cruz and chp says that's going to take you. two hours. that's what they keep telling drivers that are passing by here, and it's still no estimate on when the roadway is going to be open. so if you can stay home work from home. stay off 17. anyway you can live along highway 17 and bear creek road here in los gatos, jesse gary ktvu fox two news. we'll head back to you guys on the line. advice for drivers using highway 17 in that area. thank you, jesse. the parents of a two year old boy. tell us he is going to spend a couple more weeks in the hospital due to injuries he suffered when a tree fell onto his family's house. we first told you about the incident earlier this week, milo was in

the living room of his home on bobcat lane in boulder creek when part of a redwood came down tuesday night is lower body was pinned when firefighters arrived . they had to pull out saws and cut the tree in order to get them out. we're finally hearing from his parents, who say neighbors were among the first to rush in to help save their child. i think they could hear me screaming. and just the immediate neighbors around they all just kind of went full force , and, uh, immediately started helping. i know. at least two neighbors were up in the house with milo. after i was no longer in the house. um and other neighbors were trying to contact 911. his father got home to find the frantic scene at the house. he held his trapped son and kept him warm and awake until help arrived. the little boy was taken to the hospital in critical condition with injuries to his lower body. his father says. he is a determined little boy. very strong headed. ah his
