what happening today? a quart arraignment this afternoon for the suspect in this week's mass shooting and half moon bay. he'll be arraigned in redwood city and san mateo county 66 year old chun li zhao is accused of killing seven people with the semiautomatic gun monday afternoon at two local farms. investigators think the motive was a long simmering dispute between the suspect and his co workers. all of the evidence. we have points to this being the instance of workplace violence. the mountain mushroom farm. the first location is where the subject was employed. now the seven people killed were all adults. five men, two women. the eighth victim, who was wounded, is recovering from surgery and is listed in stable condition. today's arraignment and redwood city is set for 1 30 this afternoon. we spoke with the president of the san mateo county board of supervisors who says the county is now taking steps to support the farm

workers involved. our farm workers struggle to make e meet. they work extremely hard. they're paid minimum wage and at best and have tremendous struggles with housing and health care and education. uh, the county is, uh re dedicated to helping the farm workers in any way we can supervisor pine said the county will provide financial assistance to make up for lost wages for about 40 workers affected by the shootings. 404 throughout the bay area, volunteers are pulling together to help the dozens of families directed affected by the mass shootings and half moon bag. ktvu lamonica. peter says the residents in what's normally acquired community are still in shock. we don't. bug anybody? we don't you know, we're just come together and we're very tight community and we like each other and it's it doesn't happen here

. residents in half moon bay say it's a quaint and quiet farming community, and what happened here on monday has left them all in total disbelief. who's gonna think about farm workers being victims of a mass shooting? i mean, we don't know the motives behind it. about you know, the whole studio have been made that the coast you know, we are hurt. we are grieving nor the loss of our family members. investigators say the deadly shooting that left seven people dead is a case of workplace violence. it was also one of three mass shootings in california in a three day span. now people say they want to focus on doing everything they can to support the families who have been impacted. people are just whether it's money or their time or both. it's just everyone is jumping in, and everyone is really making this. a strong community family of hundreds of families in this community that are outraged and want to dig deeper to understand the grief that's happening in our farm worker community, mccarthy said.

special security checkpoint in place for stadium employees and nfl staff members. security. companies have been out there on the scene around the clock for weeks to make sure the site of super bowl 57 states secure and their workloads expected to increase a lot. the closer we get to february 12 when and about close to 50 guards right now, so the day of or the couple of days before the week of we probably gonna be running about 60, and so those guys will be probably moving more close to the stadium. also there will be plenty of federal, state and local law enforcement out there to make sure the super bowl remained safe. now the nfl released more information about the entertainment around the game. chris stapleton will sing the national anthem for the super bowl singer baby face will sing america the beautiful and then the award winning actress sheryl lee ralph will saying lift every voice and sane. rihanna was already announced as the star of the halftime show.

in mourn with those affected by the mass shooting at a dance studio last weekend, many people gathered last night to bring flowers, balloons and candles for the 11 victims. the names of all five men and six women who were killed or read aloud by the city's mayor, who encouraged the city to heal together. many people wanted to be there to support the survivors of the attack. the event happened just several blocks down from our business, and it was just really heartbreaking. what happened and you know they are just they're just grandparents out having a

good time, so our hearts are really broken. investigators are still working to determine a motive for the shooting. time is now for 15. we're following that match shooting in monterey park and the one in half moon bay, california senator dianne feinstein introduced a new bill to ban assault weapons nationwide. the legislation would restrict the sale of military style assault weapons and high capacity magazines. a companion bill was also introduced called the age 21 act. it would raise the minimum age to buy an assault style weapon from 18 to 21. democratic congressman kevin mullin says lawmakers should act on the federal level to toughen gun laws. too many deaths. too many guns available. yes mental health is part of the equation, but we need we need action. we need it now. democrats have conceded they don't have the 60

votes needed to overcome a republican filibuster and pass a new assault style weapons ban. house speaker kevin mccarthy offered his condolences today to those affected by the recent mass shootings. but he also said putting more restrictions on firearms is not the solution. having lived in california my entire life and milk albert, california has the strictest gun laws there are and apparently that did not work in this situation, too. i would always withhold to get all the information first of what transpired. these two individuals seem much different, too. older and age, not understanding why this transpired horrendous activity of what they've done. were there signs ahead of time that we could have found? oh, wait to find any information. recent reports show many of the assault rifle style guns used in california are imported from other states with fewer gun restrictions. time now for 17, the marine mammal center and to also lito worries that federal funding for the center may be at

risk. ktvu tom vacar has an exclusive report on what's at risk if that indeed happens. bringing the administrator of noaa, the national oceanic and atmospheric administration, and some staff members visited the marine mammal center in the marin headlands. they came to see the operation and important step in securing funding for several critical programs that could be defunded by the new congress. congress is going to ask us questions about value priorities, and that's completely appropriate and we've got some good answers for them, center ceo cecily majoras says part of the federal funds go to support a network of marine mammal rescue groups along the entire u. s west coast. and hawaii, bringing in sick or disabled seals, sea lions, sea otters and their pups. they picked the animals up and they bring them to our hospital. they're sort of the ambulance system can bring them in and protect them here and give them the care they need so they can

of donald trump were unsuccessful. green is the first member of the proud boys to testify in the case. the fbi is now investigating the discovery of classified documents at the home of former vice president mike pence. an attorney for pence says the former vice president did not know they were classified documents in his home and the documents were immediately turned over the discovery of documents that pence's home follows similar discoveries at the homes of former president trump and president biden. many lawmakers are expressing frustration that classified documents continue to be found outside secure sites for the dang rules. we got rules up here. the associated press reports. former president jimmy carter also had to return classified documents after he left office. city leaders in san jose are making some new laws to try to stop gun violence. you're going to find out what was just deployed on city streets this week in an effort to make that

victims were members of our migrant community. this represents a unique challenge when it comes to notifications and identification of next of kin. five men and two women were killed. the eighth victim who was wounded. the attack is in the hospital after surgery. today's arraignment is scheduled for 1 30 this afternoon at a courtroom in redwood city is now 4 30 for governor gavin newsom show to anger and frustration about this week's tragedy in half moon bay trauma and the damage the devastation. is felt. for generations in some cases. communities being torn asunder. no one feeling safe while the governor was in half moon barry, he said. he's tired of speaking from the scenes of mass shootings in california, and he's a specially fed up with people who refused to support tougher gun safety laws. shame on them and shame on those that allow and perpetuate. that to be rewarded politically. shame on them. shame on these judges.

that are rolling back the laws that we've established in the state of california. shame on them. you deserve better. california already has some of the nation's toughest gun safety laws. but california's ban on assault weapons and high capacity magazines is facing several legal challenges. there will be a donation drive today in downtown san jose to help the dozens of families who have been directly affected by the mass shootings in san jose in a half moon bay. it starts at nine o'clock this morning at the san jose women's club that's located at 75. south 11th street. volunteers will collect non perishable food, clothing and other items until two o'clock this afternoon. san jose has approved new restrictions on guns. following the recent mass shootings. the city council voted last night to approve new measures to prevent gun violence , including expanding outreach

and information on gun violence . restraining orders. the city also recently launched a gunshot detection system in some neighborhoods that was on monday and the san jose city auditor says gun related incidents in san jose increased by 25% from 2017 to 2021, including an increase in ghost guns. but city leaders also say gun buybacks have not been successful in stopping violence since the people turning guns in are not the ones involved in the shootings. now you might remember earlier this month, san jose was the first city in the county to require all gun owners to have liability insurance. the insurance covers unintentional, negligent or reckless use of firearms and leading to deaths, injuries and property damage. the new ordinance also includes an annual fee for gun owners. our time now for 36 police in san francisco now looking for help to identify a man who shoved a man who's almost 80 years old to the ground. look at

the pictures. the 78 year old man was walking with a cane. the suspect hit him with enough force to knock him down. this happened on the thomas street not far from the sfmoma. fortunately the man was not seriously hurt. police are describing the suspect is a white or hispanic man in his late thirties to early forties, and he has a short beard, oakland police chief laurent armstrong remains on paid leave . the community stood by him, believing that decision was wrongfully made outside the alameda county courthouse was a diverse showing of solidarity for the chief. reinstate chief armstrong so he can get back to the business of meeting the public safety needs of our constituents. carol chan, president of the oakland chinatown chamber of commerce, said armstrong has supported the asian community grappled with hate crimes. baker for all this time, you have all bad. but

today it's our turn to say that we have your back. let's bring back jim armstrong. the federal judge overseeing opd reforms had a hearing over zoom. he said he was quote profoundly disappointed by the latest misconduct scandal that, he said once again exposed the rot within the department. but the judge did not make any ruling on whether or not to extend o pds probationary period. the city is said to be back in court. in april time now for 38 in san francisco, teachers and school district employees are still criticizing the san francisco unified school system over continuing payroll problems and what they call a staffing crisis . last night, they held a rally outside of school district offices during a board of education meeting. they're demanding urgent action. with the union, saying some employees are still being underpaid after the school district switch to a new payroll system months ago. the union also says wages are

still less than their counterparts. a lot of our members are like i said the lowest paid employees of the city and county of san francisco , and it's hard for them to live in san francisco, with the rest being so high, but inflation rates being so high. it's very difficult. some of some of my members have 2 to 3 jobs and school district says it has set up a new command center designed to help employees who were still having payroll problems. stanford medical school is joining other medical schools in withdrawing cooperation from u. s news and world report rankings . stanford medical schools, joined by the university of pennsylvania, mount sinai in columbia university, and will no longer furnished data for those rankings. just last week, harvard medical school made the same decision. the schools say the rankings give a distorted view of a medical school education our time now for 39 school lunch is getting a makeover in the mountie ablow unified school district and contra costa county. do the

slow. inching up after weeks of storms to start the month, the san francisco public utilities commission says head hetchy reservoir near yosemite national park is likely to fill to capacity this year. right now the reservoir is 81% full, and that is without the sierra snowpack that will eventually travel downstream as it melts this spring and summer. weeks of rain in the north bay has also been a great thing for newts. after the torrential downpours, thousands of newts emerge from their burrows and set out to search for a body of water to breed. now for the first time in years, the newts have plenty of options to choose from, but they need a safe way to get there, according to the new york times , some people in petaluma have actually helped the newts make it safely across some busy

ktvu andre seniors here now to show us a video of the happy reunion with their dogs that were stolen. good morning, andrea. good morning to you. david. dogs are now safely back home with their owners this morning after several stressful hours in all eight dogs are recovered following a theft. san francisco police say the pets were all in their dog walkers van and the van was stolen. while parked at piedmont and ashbury streets yesterday afternoon. that's in the haight asbury neighborhood. the worried dog owners searched the area for any sign of the band and the animals, not knowing what had happened to them. did they release all the dogs in the park somewhere where they're gonna take the dogs and sell them or they just give them away? um so it was incredibly frustrating because we couldn't locate the no. no no dog had a tracker on

and communities around the bay area are showing support for the people affected by the mass shootings in half moon bay ktvu sally ross smith joins us now from half moon bay with a look at some of the efforts underway to provide food, clothing and other resources for about 40 families displaced by that tragedy, ali. yeah pam were at mac dutra plaza in half moon bay. this is right on the city's main street across from city hall. this is usually the heart of the tourist part of half moon bay. but today it's a site where people can show their support and their grief for the shootings that happened earlier this week and mourn the seven people who were killed at those two farms here in half moon bay. you can see flowers and candles. people have left behind handwritten notes and even stuffed animals. the victims have not been officially identified by the court. honor yet, but we know that they were all workers at the two mushroom farms here in half moon bay there about 40 families who not only worked but lived on site at those two farms, and they can't

go back home because their home is now the site of a criminal investigation. so in the meantime, they are staying in hotels that the city and county are providing, and there are several community organizations in half moon bay and across the bay area. who are trying to help by gathering donations of food, clothing and money for the survivors. people are just whether it's money or their time or both. it's just everyone is jumping in, and everyone is really making this a strong community. not just in half moon bay, but across the bay area in san jose this morning, an organization called the farmworker caravan is hosting an emergency donation drive. they're asking for clothing items nonperishable foods like canned tuna and granola bars, and they're accepting those donations from nine am until two this afternoon at the san jose women's center that's at 75 south hunt south 11th street in san jose. they also have a website. and it go fund me page and later this afternoon, they will be driving those donated items to another community
