in the works in walnut creek. it is tied to last week's vergt in the bart police shooting trial. tara moriarty joining us live. she has the details on all of this. good morning, tara. >> reporter: well, good morning, dave. according to facebook at least 100 people are planning on showing up at this rally scheduled for monday. this is perhaps the first one of its kind in support of former bart police officer johannes mehserle and people from oscar grant's support now say they too plan on attending. police are gearing up for the demonstration which promises to be an emotionally charged one in front of the courthouse from 2:00 to 5:00 in the afternoon. they have spoken to the event's key organizer to nen ensure a peaceful protest. 1 man said he doesn't plan to show up at the rally but he does support the idea. >> i want to support our police officers in all agencies and i dpreef for the grant family and their loved ones, again, it is

a complicated situation and a lot of hard feelings on many sides for a long time. >> reporter: he was convicted july 8th of involuntary manslaughter for killing oscar grant on new year's day of last year at a bart station. walnut creek police are planning for the worst but they do not expect anywhere near the level of the sometimes violent protests and looting that happened in oakland. now no one knows why walnut creek was chosen as the city to hold the rally and police are not offering up any details. on monday if you are here you probably want to avoid the courthouse. we are live here in walnut creek, tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> oakland police just released photos of some of the looters who damaged downtown oakland businesses last week after the johannes mehserle verdict. police want your help in

identifying the people you see here in these photos. several businesses were looted including the sears department store, a footlocker store and several small family owned businesses. business owners who were effected, they are also asking anyone who has photos from that night to give them to the police. >> whoever got the video, whoever got the pictures you know what i am saying you can identify the person who did it you know what i am saying, thanks a lot, you can help us out a lot, you know what i am saying -- [ inaudible ] >> -- to a 66. see all of those foes release by the oakland police department by going to our channel 2 website ktvu.com. we have posted them on the oakland riot tab. >> 6:03. san francisco police are investigating what they are calling a suspicious death -- [ inaudible ] >> -- body of a woman in the parking lot of a hotel on scott and lombard shortly after

midnight. the manager describes the person as a white woman in her 50s. investigators are trying to determine exactly how she died. they are not ruling out the possibility it was a suicide. an overnight police investigation stopped muni trains in both directions for nearly an hour. it happened before 11:00 in the castro district. police were chasing a suspect when they shut down the line because they had safety concerns. it is believed they were looking for two men who might have been robbing passengers. no word on any arrests. >> 6:04. this morning in the gulf of mexico that new cap that bp just put on its broken oil well appears to be holing. the pictures from be low 5000 feet underneath the sea show no oil gushing out. bp is making sure the cap is handling all the pressure. we expect to hear from the president about all of this at 6:30 this morning. more on that live from our washington, d.c. bureau in a couple of minutes. early this morning there

was a shake up in our nation's capitol but it had nothing to do with politics. a small earthquake hit just outside washington, d.c. they felt it as far away as west virginia and pennsylvania. it was centered in rockville, maryland and measured 3.6, the shaking started after 5:00 a.m. washington time. there are no reports of injuries or damage but a lot of people were start telled by that unush shaking. >> firefighters in solano county are busy this morning watching for flare-ups from a grass fire in venetia, the fire started 3 yesterday afternoon in the 1400 block of goodyear road along 680. fire officials believe it started when a tree fell against a power line and that caused a spark. the fire burned about seven acres and was out in about an hour. no injuries or damages were reported. >> time now 6:05. well sheriff's deputies near tracey say they want to know what happened to a small herd

of horses found dead and dehydrated. a driver noticed those horses lying in a field long interstate 580 west near mountain house road. in all five horses were found dead. two were still alive but they are very weak. a veterinarian says their condition is fragile. she also says the animals appeared to be well fed. >> they were well nourished, it wasn't that they were you know without food, but water, lack of water is what killed them. >> investigators say a trough on the property was bone dry. it may have been empty for three or 4 days during which those temperatures reached into the high 90s. sheriff's department is trying to figure out whether the water to the trough may have been shut off and l the sheriff may file criminal neglect charges. >> we now know the names of all four fishermen involved in this week's boating accident. the coast guard says they died after their boat capsized in the waters on wednesday.

his body was pulled from the water that days a was melvin cox. one body washed ashore yesterday morning and one body is still missing and presumed dead. three are from riverbank, one lives in arkansas. >> ac transit drivers say they are angry a new contract will be imposed on them. this morning a judge will hear arguments about the union aimed at blocking their board of directors from enforcing that contract which takes effect on sunday. that contract was approved on june 30th without a vote by the union's 1700 members because contract negotiations had reached an impasse. ac transit is advising its blows to stay on the job until the court makes a ruling. >> 6:07. let's head right back out to sal, who is keeping the roads -- an eye on the roads -- [ inaudible ] [overlapping

as hot as yesterday. fog, sub, still warm to hot. temperatures starting to trend downward, that will continue sunday-monday, claudine and dave. >> 6:10. officials of apple have invited reporters to their cupertino campus this morning, they are expected to talk about the complaints about the iphone 4. it has been selling well but complaints about reseption problems have been dogging apple. consumer reports says it is not recommending buying the iphone 4. now the wall street journal and bloomberg are reporting apple engineers knew about the antenna problems a year ago but steve jobs liked the design so much apple went ahead with the development. it has left a lot of consumers wondering what exnext. >> the short-term fixes i guess are okay but i think it is better if they come out and explain what the underlying issue is and if they are coming to come out with a fix tell us they are going to come out with a fix and take your time and

moving well into the city. and this morning's drive is going to be okay driving on northbound 880 past the coliseum. the weekend forecast with steve. >> on this friday morning a little couple of changes here. subtle changes and they lean towards cooler. you can see why overcast conditions over oakland, some of the low clouds over the bay, that means cooler. thunderstorms are possible down there. for us there is also more of a component of a delta breeze. the city has just -- [ inaudible ] >> -- 64 on the high side today. there is always sun but temperatures look like they will stay be low average, which is 68. cool coast, mild for some and hot for others.

lightning have sparked at least eight fires in riverside county. take a look at one of those fires. this one is burning near the town of hammette. two sheriffs deputies were hurt trying to rescue a woman from a burning trailer in lake yeltsin or, in the san fernando valley temperatures near 100 degrees are causing unstable weather there sparking storms. southern china is bracing for a typhoon already brahmed for the death of 38 people in the fill a peens and has left a trail of destruction. this storm was downgraded to a tropical storm at one point. the weather men are saying the storm is getting stronger again. packing 75 mile an hour winds. it is expected to hit landfall tonight. sonoma county is having minor aftershocks after a pair of small earthquakes rattled that region yesterday. the latest hit around 1:00 this

morning. it registered between a magnitude one and two right near the geysers. that is where a 3.9 quake hit just before 5:00 last night. a 4.0 quake shook the area near santa rosa yesterday morning. so far no word of damage. >> time now 6:25. well, his company's name is on the home of the golden state waiorsout but or e cal ceo already eelly son will not be the new owner. instead they surprised everyone by winning that bidding war. that bid was $450 million, a record breaker for an nba franchise. one of the people involved in brokering the deal says there is a simple reason why he lost out. >> they waited until the last possible moment where we were literally hours away from signing a deal and put in a slightly higher bid. i believe morally and ethically

a bloomberg report has a senior engineer reportedly claiming he told apple ceo steve jobs about this antenna issue before the iphone 4 release and consumer reports is not recommending the iphone 4 to its consumers. and so this is where we are today. apple has called a press conference, unusual to say the least. we are live at apple headquarters, and in hours they are going to hold that conference at 10:00. they have come under fire from customers, experts and even been sued since the iphone 4 was released. it has had antenna issues. for those of you unfamiliar with the phone the antenna wraps all the way around it and if the left hand corner is covered signal strength drops dramatically. experts are telling us the bumper wrap around the entire phone and eliminates most of the problem. so today will apple offer free bumpers to customers who have already purchased a phone? will apple apologize?

both, or nothing even close? >> steve jobs can do magic. if he does the magic at this conference and the reality is all you need is that bumper. there is still a chance he might still be able to turn it, but, if they had done this at the beginning it would have been a sure thing and now it is late people are really upset. >> reporter: yesterday new york senator charles shumer sent an open letter to steve jobs calling for a free fix and saying it is incumbent upon apple to address this in a tran parent matter. he is calling for a recall but experts don't believe that will happen. the press conference is scheduled for here at 10:00. we will be monitoring it and have more for you on mornings on 2. jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. >> police in vallejo are investigating a three week

string of daily shootings. kraig debro has a live report on what is happening out there. >> reporter: good morning, dave. police here wish they knew, too. this latest shooting happened around 5:30 yesterday afternoon. there are actually two victims from this shooting. a 15-year-old girl and a 21- year-old man. the girl was transported to the hospital by an ambulance but the male was actually picked up by a good samaritan and taken to the hospital. both were hanging out here yesterday afternoon. witnesses say a group of people in a car drove by and simply started firing. they struck the girl in her thigh and the male in his torso before speeding off. the girl was taken by ambulance to the hospital and the man was taken to the hospital as well

but he was taken by car by a good samaritan. we will try to get more later. >> in brentwood thowrtds are investigating an overnight shooting at a party that sent two teenagers to the hospital. witnesses say three young men drove up to a house on virginia drive whereabout 20 teenagers had gathered for a party. they got into an argument outside of the house and they fired shots towards the house. two teenagers were hit. both were taken to the hospital. police say they are looking for at least three suspects. police are investigating a series of breakins at several office buildings. palo alto. for the last five months burglars have broken the windows and then stolen electronics. the most recent occurred in the 1700 block of embaring odor 0 road four weeks ago. the first one happened last february. police are not sure if they are

connected and right now are asking for the public's help. >> 6:34. police in they ton say they have arrested all of the teenage suspects in a series of strong armed robberies. police say the four teenagers targeted younger victims, stealing cell phones, ipods and other mobile electronic devices. investigators say they found all of the stolen items earlier this week at the house of a 17- year-old clayton valley high school football player. police say two arrested are from clayton, the other two from concord. we have an update for you about a story we first told you about yesterday. 61 year old robert turner is in police custody. witnesses say he stabbed one woman and shot and killed another. her family members say she died because police took too long to come to her assistance.

however police say the scene was chaotic and they did not know where the shooting suspect was and they didn't know anyone else to get hurt. >> police voted to approve a contract they say will prevent layoffs. they didn't give up as much as the city had asked for. they agreed to a reduction in officer pay of 4%. others have agreed to 10% cuts. the deal calls for officers to increase their retirement contribution. the contract runs until next june and the city council must approve it. it is going to be more complicated and expensive to carpool across the golden gate bridge. on monday carpoolers will no longer be allowed to pay cash. instead carpoolers must have a fast track trains tonedder and stop at a tollbooth so their car can be checked. if you don't do that carpoolers

was an accident. they say it is not about riots, racism or to upset the family. >> it is supposed to be nonviolent. just a forum so where people on the other side can have a discussion, talk, not everybody there is saying that he should have been free. >> reporter: former bart police officer johannes mehserle was of course convicted of involuntary manslaughter for killing oscar grant on new year's day of last year. walnut creek police have reached out to the coalition for oscar grant. some of his members say they plan on attending monday's rally. no one knows why walnut creek was chosen. the mayor says that she is not worried about the perception of her city. she says everyone has the right to rally. tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> a meeting between the governors of u.s. and mexican

border states has now been moved out of arizona to new mexico, that is after the mexican deposit said they would not go to the meeting if it were held in arizona because of that state's new immigration law. now the governors of arizona and texas say they won't go to the re-scheduled meeting. california's governor schwarzenegger is planning to go. that meeting will be held in santa fe in late september. >> a new ktvu field pole indicates californians are divided about the new law. 49% said they approve, with 37% voicing strong approval. a total of 45% said they disapprove with 34% strongly against it. when asked whether they thought undocumented immigrants were taking jobs away from californias, 58% said the group is doing jobs others don't want will 34% said they are taking away others work. it is scheduled to take effect july 29th. >> a group of disabled

on 2. >> time now 6:54. actress lindsay lohan has checked herself into rehab and is hoping it will reduce her jail sentencech she was sentenced to 90 days in jail for violating her probation in a dui case. that sentence is supposed to begin next tuesday. but according to people.com lohan checked into pickford loft in los angeles on wednesday hoping the judge would modify her sentence or let her serve it at that sober house. bart police chief is defending one of the its officers who used a taser on someone who didn't pay their fair last month. it happened at a berkeley bart station. the chief said the bart officer followed the fair evader and when the man resist arrest he used his taser to subdue him. he had a criminal history. they were retrained after a different officer used one on a 13-year-old. >> a memorial set this weekend for the stanford grad student

who died a week ago today while climbing in yosemite, 31-year- old christian, an experienced climber, fell 400 feet to her death while descending from the north face ovey corn peak without a rope. services will be held sunday at stan sphorld memory chunchts. on sunday they will gather for a tribute to bishop wail tear hawkins who died on center. he was the pastor of the love center church. next tuesday stars will all be performing at a gathering paying their final respects. now, this will be happening at the paramount theater on broadway in oakland at 7:00 p.m. the tickets absolutely free. a funeral is scheduled at the paramount the next day. the young museum is opening its doors for free tonight from
