>> right now at 6, we're following developing news out of pacifica tonight where police say they shot and killed a woman who had just shot her own son. good evening, everybody. i'm vicki liviakis. i'm ken wayne. last check. francisco boulevard between clarendon road in lakeside avenue was shut down. >> as police worked to clear that scene, a scene that's been active now for several hours. and that is where we find kron four's. dan thorn with the very latest on what's happening there. dan. and this quiet beach town shaken up gunshots this morning. it appears that there were 2 shootings that happened here. >> in pacifica police still out on scene 10 hours later. all started around 8 o'clock this morning. investigators say they responded to an apartment complex here on francisco boulevard and that was after they got a 9-1-1. call from a man who said that he was shot by his mom. so when police got here, they saw the mom driving away from the area. they eventually caught up with her. she pulled a gun on those officers and then one

of those officers opened fire and killed her. they then went to the apartment and found the sun with a gunshot wound. he was later taken to the hospital and is right now doing ok? we have learned tonight that no pacifica police officers were injured, but a neighbor tells us she was at home at the time she heard the gunshots ringing out this morning and she had no idea what was going on and then was disturbed after finding out what happened. >> ice heard >> bunch of gunshots. i think over at least half a dozen. i mean, anytime something doesn't sound right. but i don't know this story. and she shot her son trying to kill i'm sorry for her. but something. something's wrong with her. you your child. >> yeah, we're still trying to work on those figure out exactly what the circumstances were. what led to this shooting her son, whether there was a fight, some sort

of domestic issue that was going on there. pacifica police responding to the scene here as well as a south city police and the san mateo county sheriff's office. a part of protocol. the sam tail county district attorney's office. it's going to be investigating. this is well still working to collect a lot of information. but as we mentioned off the top of this report between clarity and lakeside along francisco boulevard, the area still closed off here investigators are combing this apartment complex. also a lot of people that are driving through this shocked by what they're looking at. curious about what went on here and we're still working to get that information can. and vicki, back to you. and i'm curious, are these 2 shootings real close to each other? the plbce where the sun was shot? how far is that from where? >> the woman was shot by police. yeah, it appears the shooting with the sun definitely had to have happened within the apartment complex itself. we haven't been able to get to that area. but when we went around the corner here behind one of

these poor shots, perfect pour cafe here around the other side. we can see investigators of their heads kind of, you know, part of their had spoken up over the fence there, taking pictures of what was going on there. and then the mom apparently took off in a car that was it looked like she was trying to get up onto the freeway there, but they were able to essentially stop her and then opened fire on on her. so the scenes are are very, very close to each other. police responding here really quickly this morning around 7.15. >> we're not a while and they given you any indication when they're going to open up that those roads. so far, there hasn't been any indication as to when they're going to open them up. but we have seen fewer police officers than there were. when we first got to the scene here. >> the forensics team was just here a moment ago continues to be here. the san mateo county coroner's truck also pulled up here as well. they taking off from the scene. but there's also people that trying to get to the homes that are here because this area is cordoned

off along a pretty good stretch. so there's a lot of apartments that are along the way here. a lot of homes that people are still trying to get into. so it could be here for the next several minutes. could be the next several we're going keep you up to date and we'll see what happens. all right. dan thorn in pacifica watching developed out there throughout the rest of the evening. thank you, dan. >> now to our 4 zone forecast as we give you a live look outside at. apparently we're looking at fog that's might get a lot of fog. and, you know, a lot of moisture in the lawrence has been warning us about it and it is upon us. lori, i think that's mount tam up there right now. we've got the winds whipping over the tops, the mountains, the rain. >> has moved in across parts of the bay area. more scattered showers. that is going to be picking up, though, as we head through the night tonight. you see some of the raindrops on the lens there overlooking san francisco. you've got mostly cloudy skies and a few scattered showers popping up around the bay area. nothing -% too heavy just yet. but we're going ramp things up with the storms. the main cold front rolls into the evening hours. so out there right now, you can see all the clouds rolling

in across the state. we've got scattered showers pushing south now in the monterey bay and got some snow over the high country to the bay area has seen of pop-up showers as we head throughout the day today. and you see i'm rolling on through kind of a few bands sliding on by nothing too heavy. but you saw some of that. if you're driving around, we're seeing more of that move in right now. so that is only going to pick up as we head through the night tonight as the main cold front going to move through. i'm not real heavy rain called moderate to light amounts of rain as we head through the night tonight, maybe a half an inch, maybe an inch of rain across some of the coastal mountain ranges. but yeah, it's going to be slick out there. so if you're traveling around the bay area tonight, be prepared. you can run some raindrops out there is going pick up throughout the night tonight until about midnight and then it's going start to taper off more scattered showers. but we've got more storms on the way. so this front kind of his opening the doors writing right in the back of a ridge of high pressure. are other weak system sliding on through. but right behind that, we've got a more impressive storm tomorrow. maybe a few scattered showers. maybe a couple raindrops rainbows in

between some of those showers as well. and then after that, we get into friday, we got a much more significant storm. we'll talk more about that coming up in a few minutes. thank you, lawrence. a former allegheny county deputy accused of killing a married couple made an appearance in court today for a preliminary hearing. it happened back in september of 2022. and as our car for sale on reports tonight. >> the family of the victims, they were there to put pressure on alameda county da pamela price per requesting to dismiss enhancement charges. >> the man accused of this double murder. devon williams is facing a 50 years to life if convicted and sentenced of all charges. the judge dismissed assistant district attorneys oral motion to dismiss enhancements at this time. but the judge did say the da can make a motion for that same request after this hearing, today's court appearance was a preliminary hearing for the judge to determine whether defendant will be held over to face the murder charges. williams is a

former alameda county deputy. he is accused of killing a married couple back in september 2022. police say williams shot the married woman. he was dating and her husband at the time. it happened in the couple's home in dublin. officers say he went on the run for a few hours but eventually surrendered the family of maria and suntran gathered outside court here to put pressure on the da. here is reaction from maria tran sister about the judge denied a motion to dismiss enhancements. >> the judges good. he knows about the case in u.s. history, but he he knows to be doing the right thing. and i said i'm extremely grateful for what he has done. but is now up to be a price to do the right thing and to bring justice to our family and the community. >> the next court appearance will take place thursday afternoon. the family of the victims say they will be back here to put pressure on the d a reporting from dublin gayle ong kron. 4 news. >> the child was injured in a

shooting in berkeley. it happened about 11 o'clock last night near the intersection of bonnaire street and alston way near strawberry creek park. officers say they got a call about several gunshots in that area. and when they got to the scene, they say they found a child was shot in the thigh, no word tonight on any arrests. the city of oakland welcomed its next police chief. today. the post has been vacant for more than a year. now. >> and crimes are escalating in that community. crime forestry says stasio joins us live in studio now with more on how he plans to tackle oakland's biggest challenge is theresa and challenges. there are. >> i floyd mitchell got straight to the point today saying he wants to build public trust and create a safer community. and that is all going to be his top priority. >> introduce to you. our new top police officer chief floyd mitchell. >> oakland police chief floyd mitchell broke down his goals of why he decided to take the job is top cop of oakland and what he plans to do in his

first 100 days on the job. >> first 100 days is truly going to be me getting my getting here, getting on the ground and getting out to me. everyone here getting to know who my council members are getting to know who are the movers and shakers within the organization getting to know my command staff getting know their abilities, getting to know the police department and where we can get better and how we go about getting better. crime continues to plague oakland while burglaries are down by 46%. >> violent crime overall is up by 14%, which includes robberies up. 37%. chief lloyd says that he embraces programs such as cease-fire to make a difference. he also said keeping and retaining officers will be top of mind. you want to make oakland police department. >> b, the employer of choice for the bay area. you want your fficert know that they're going to be supported and and that you're going to take care of them both from a benefit standpoint. but you're

also going to see them as a person. i think it's important that that you enjoy coming to work. >> the opd continues to face oversight by a federal monitor due to the writers case more than 20 years ago where officers were caught planting evidence. chief michel said that he will work to move the department out of that relationship. my job is to continue to do the work to satisfy those requirements and working with my team to make sure that we do everything that we're supposed to do. >> to satisfy those requirements. i'm going to sit down with the monitor and identify specifically what we need to do and how we need to do it to get to the end of road. >> a lot to tackle those 100 days. mitchell will be opd is 12 chief in the last decade, including interim chief see says although he is an outsider, he already feels at home. looks forward to getting to work. his swearing-in date will be sometime in the next 30 days. ken and vicki, alright trees and thank you.

in the south bay, san jose police. >> say they rounded up guns and several pounds of drugs in san jose during the search for 6 men accused of a gang-related assault. take a look. police say a man was seriously injured after he was attacked by several people. this was back in october. then last wednesday, police arrested the man that they say were involved. officers say one of them still lived in san jose. the others were found in southern california. all 6 of them we're booked into jail on assault charges. the san jose's alum rock union school district is facing a dire financial deficit and could be taken over by the santa clara county office of education. the district has 22 schools from kindergarten through 8th grade. the education office is reviewing the district's financial report for this school year as well as resolutions addressing its projected budget deficit. the outcome of this review is still uncertain, but it says school closures in the district are imminent. >> coming up, california's minimum wage for fast-food

workers is going up next week. but why some workers say they're actually concerned about the hike. >> plus, why recall may be in the works for deciding who will be the second candidate in the race for south bay. congresswoman anna eshoo school shooting drills are supposed to prepare students for that very scenario. but one lawmaker here at the state capitol is concerned. those drills. >> are taking a toll on the mental health of students and staff capitol correspondent eytan wallace. i'll tell you about a new bill aiming to address very issue.

>> time now for the 4 zone forecast with a live look at 6.80, in walnut creek mortaza on hand to walk us through our what we need to wear, whether it's the law says rainfall and i'm thinking, keep everything handy right now. you're going you're going to be a little bit of everything the next couple days, though. yeah, it's going to be windy wet the time especially into friday. that storm looks like that's going to pack a little bit of a punch right now. we're just getting into our current storm showers popping up around the bay area. nothing too heavy. just shipping news out of clouds. they've been rolling in throughout the day. we've had some sprinkles. some light showers out there. and that's where we sit right now. looking out toward the golden gate bridge, although that's kind of get lost in the clouds out there right now. and some of that rain to more than on the way as this front working its way into the state, bring in much needed rainfall of the bay area and much of california in the snow just piling up in the high country. you see some of that. they're toward the sierra plenty of snow there in parts of northern california. see more snow and some rain the bay

area. more scattered showers. it's picking up in the north bay right now is the main cold front just about to move in. that is going to bring with it. a more sustained rain as we head throughout the evening hours. and i think after about midnight or so, things begin to taper off just a bit. a part of the monterey bay also getting into the rain, got a pretty good band. they're headed toward los banos right now. but overall, the storm system just kind nice rain maker as it moves on by forecast. you see the scattered showers out ahead of it. the main front just beginning to drop down. so as we get toward o'clock, that's we start to see some moderate amounts, maybe even some brief, heavy amounts of rain moving on as we head toward wednesday that slowly working its way through the bay area. as we head to the middle of the evening. and then as we get toward the latter part, things begin to taper off. i think right around midnight. we'll start to see the showers begin to taper off, least moving out of parts of bay area. and then tomorrow morning, we'll just some widely scattered showers kind of on off to the day. you see some sunshine, some rainbows. and if you're lucky, maybe even a thunderstorm. thank you, lawrence. developing news out of baltimore tonight where a cargo ship hit a bridge causing it to collapse into a

river. we're learning the bodies of 2 of the 6 people presumed dead have now been recovered. authorities say the bodies of a 35 year-old man and a 26 year-old man recovers from a pickup truck in the river. not far from where the francis scott key bridge fell in. authorities say the 6 victims presumed dead were construction workers from mexico and central america. the bridge fell early yesterday morning after a cargo ship apparently lost power and hit. one of the bridge supports the ntsb. e is ntsb is now investigating that incident. >> to give my endorsement to daniel lurie. >> kron 4 is your election headquarters and former san francisco mayor and police chief frank jordan. they're making a big endorsement for daniel eriz campaign for mayor jordan says his political ideals align with lori and he's proud to make the endorsement for the air to the levi strauss fortune. >> right now, there's a serious concern and it's been

going on for about the last 5 safety now is turning out to be the number one concern for all of san franciscans. so we need to get back to that first priority of government, which is the protection of life property. >> as part of his campaign, lori, talk about his plans for san francisco's police department and he's behavioral health plan. a lorry also says he plans on fully staffing the police department and sheriff's office. he's also calling for a citywide fentanyl state of emergency. the top candidates lurie is facing in the race for san francisco, mayor incumbent mayor london breed, former san francisco mayor mark farrell and francisco supervisor ahsha safai the race to replace congresswoman anna eshoo could be going to a recount. former san jose mayor sam liccardo's already secured his place in the november general election. but >> the race to decide who he will face is razor thin. we're talking really close right

now. santa clara county supervisor joe summit in leeds, assemblyman evan low by just 2 votes. both campaigns are working to cure ballots. that means are asking voters to fix ballots. it may be missing a signature. san mateo county officials say there are 525 ballots that need to be cured by april. 2nd or they will not be counted. any candidate can ask for a recount. but so far neither smitty in orlo have said they plan to do that. robert f kennedy junior's announcement yesterday of a bay area running mate as voters and political analysts talking. >> the independent presidential candidate chose tech attorney and philanthropist nicole shanahan kron four's. catherine heenan is in our newsroom now with details. yeah. and the first 24 hours or so, vicki, following that announcement, kennedy has raised more than >> 2 million dollars. a little bit of a financial bump, but not bad, although it's agreed he will need 10's of millions to get on state ballots and

keep going putting a running mate in place is considered a move that could help kennedy on several fronts, although it remains to be seen if he has any real shot and the race. >> the kennedy team is hoping shanahan will attract young voters. help him get on more state ballots and it is not incidental that she has deep pockets. the former wife of google co-founder sergey brin is wealthy and has donated to the kennedy campaign. shanahan echoes many of kennedy's core beliefs, including a distrust of vaccines. some observers, in fact, we're surprised the new vice presidential candidate leaned into that so heavily tuesday. pharmaceutical medicine has its place. >> but no single safety study can assess a cumulative impact of one perscription on top of another prescription and one shot on top of another shot on top of another shot throughout

most likely worry he has the potential to be a real wrecking ball for democrats. >> that wrecking ball would include qualifying beyond. the only state is officially on the ballot so far that utah, but he has enough signatures, for example, to get on the ballot in hawaii, new hampshire and nevada. those are all democratic states. so he's positioning himself to take votes from both parties. but at a higher rate from democrats. and this is why democrats and the dnc are freaking out. >> kennedy told me this weekend he said it again yesterday. he is confident he will get on the ballots of all 50 states mcewen is calling that challenge a heavy lift and says kennedy is running out of time. he's got only about 8 weeks. vicki, thank you, catherine. coming up, world renowned sculptor and bay area native. >> richard serra has died. we have more on the legacy he leaves behind.

>> famed sculptor and bay area native richard serra has died. sarah was famous for rustinge steel, another malleable materials into large-scale pieces of outdoor artwork. he was also known as the poet of iron. this is one of his sculptures that started that getting public attention back in the 80's. it 120 foot long curving wall of raw steel at the federal plaza in new york city and now generated backlash because some people felt that the public was not included in its creation, was later taken down. sarah's
