way. but also reach out to kron 4 dot com. if you use our website as well, we usually will say when and where warming centers are offering epstory there with that information. so you'll find it. >> and you can see video here of the demonstrations, the shut down broadway street in oakland where people gathered last night to protest the killing of tyree nichols. the graphic video of his beating at the hands of 5 police officers with memphis of city of memphis was released friday night. all 5 of those officers have been fired and they all now face charges of second degree murder. >> and the that chapter of the naacp and community leaders came together to discuss the death of nichols kron four's amanda hari has reaction. >> everyone at the meeting had a similar reaction to seeing the video of the arrest. shock and disgust. they say they want to make sure nothing similar ever happens here in

the bay area. religious leaders, community members and even police chief bill scott. >> all coming together to prevent another tragedy. they were discussing the death of tyree nichols and what measures need to be taken to prevent police brutality in the bay area. every brown brings us together and what he calls chief scott says he condemns what happened in memphis along with shocking u.s.. there's no place for that. in this profession. nichols was pulled over on january 7th for what police say was reckless driving body camera and street lamp camera footage shows a group of officers repeatedly beating nichols as he cries for his mother. nichols died 3 days later. chief scott says this incident is impacting police departments around the country that back and we have to keep doing what we need to do to continue to change for the better chief. scott says he holds people accountable and his department in a fair way to process. they also have a

special unit created to prevent these types of incidents. the name of field training course options. and that is what they do for time. examine. >> procedures are protocols, tactical situations and they come out of that lesson learned. so officers trained to be better. ordination on leadership. even when the sergeant is not president. retired police captain yolanda williams also spoke at the event. >> she says she was even more disappointed that 5 black officers were responsible for the beating. they also discredited to a certain extent black police officers. we fought so hard to become officers and police agencies for you and it was hard as it as a black person to get through it successfully. and then here we have 5 officers. >> with less than 6 years service who have actually destroyed everything we have for. chief scott says they

haven't had any issues with protests or vandalism over the weekend since the video has been released. >> but he wants people to know they have a right to protest. he just ask that they do so peacefully in the newsroom. amanda hari kron, 4 news. >> thank you, amanda. well, lawmakers on capitol hill are also reacting to that video showing the brutal attack of nichols, some saying more police reform is needed other saying reforms like that really will make a different dc correspondent basil john takes a look. >> good morning. the nichols family attorney says he wants lawmakers and the president to put police reform efforts back on the table. heartbreak. it was horrible, inhumane. that's how illinois democratic senator durbin described the brutal video of memphis police officers beating tyree nichols. >> and on abc's this week, he says there is a federal responsibility for police reform. we need a national conversation on this. we do not the denial or willful

indifference. the video has brought calls from across the country for change. and on cnn state of the union, pennsylvania democratic congresswoman, some early says the calls for change are growing. there are so many black cities across the country that have now live this. but it's painful every single time and never gets any easier. the nichols family attorney ben crump says he's urging congress to pass legislation to combat police misconduct. put the george floyd justice in policing back on the table to have the also push efforts to get police reform. but ohio republican congressmantjim jordan told nbc's meet the press. >> he doesn't think there's a law that can stop what happened in the video. i don't know that any law, any training, any reform is going to change. you know, that this man was handcuffed, they continue to be in. jordan also says there is a lack of good applicants joining the police around the country. >> and that needs to change reporting in washington. i'm basil, john. >> basil, thank you. and the

gofundme account that was set up for tyree nichols is family has over a million dollars in donations. now that page was created on saturday. their goal is to generate 1.2 million. so there nearly there those donations have been pouring in after video footage showing that violent arrest was made public on friday night. >> it's 808. and today a former assisted living facility. workers going to be rain for the death of a resident who drink cleaning solution. 54 year-old leticia starling is charged with elder abuse for the death of a 94 year-old resident at atria walnut creek. and his name was constantine. con noon and he died in august of 2021. the da's office says that starling was taking care of the victim. and he drank that cleaning solution and ended up dying, rushed to the hospital, died a few days later from injuries to his stomach and esophagus and throat. the da says starling willfully caused and permitted him to be in a situation. where is health was endangered drinking that

cleaning fluid. starling is currently held in the martinez detention facility. >> in the east bay and reveal police have arrested a man accused of driving drunk and hitting a pedestrian that happened on showman street new the ikea there just off a tee. this was saturday afternoon. the person was struck is listed in critical condition. the driver of the car actually ran away at first, but was caught a few blocks away. police have since arrested him for felony dui hit and run and gun possession. it's a 10 and we're learning more about the motive in a mass shooting in half moon bay that killed 7 people. >> a california prosecutor tells of area news group that it was because of a dispute over $100 work-related repair bill. and that is what sparked the gunfire and the violence. they say that 66 year-old chunli zhao told investigators he went to vent to his supervisor about the fact that he got that $100 bills saying his co worker was actually to

blame for the collision between his forklift and the co-workers. bulldozer. but the supervisor insisted >> that he pay it and then the rampage began. showers charged with 7 counts of premeditated murder. and one count. >> of attempted murder. investigators say he admitted to the killings in a jailhouse interview, but he did not enter a plea. he is being held right now in jail without bail. and the man who stopped the monterey park shooter in southern california for you from going into another dance studio and killing more people there. he got a hero's welcome there, some of the surveillance video of what he did to step in and wrestle that got away from the gunman. the alhambra police department resented brandon side with a medal of courage for what he did. you can see in an interview their size sprang into action when the shooter entered that second dance studio. he had already gone and killed 11 people and wounded 9 at the first dance studio where he opened fire he was luckily able to wrestle the gun away.

to the south now and what we have for the bay area's nothing but sunshine today that will eventually help us out with temperatures beginning to climb for a couple spots already eventually will rise into the low 50's. as for now and over the next round to 30 45 minutes, we're still under frost advisories for almost all of the bay area. temperatures as low as the upper 20's as parts of the north bay of seeing and down into the 30's right along the bay shore. temps later today will rise into the low 50's for most of us all the livermore and pleasanton only in the upper 40's for your daytime highs. hayward, redwood city, oakland and san francisco at 53 for your warmest temps today. tomorrow temperatures will rise a little further and still under sunny skies lows tomorrow morning shouldn't be quite as cold either. we kick off february on wednesday with temperatures a little warmer, a chance of showers thursday night into friday morning and a better chance of them into sunday of the upcoming weekend. our warmest days will be towards the weekend with highs in the low 60's by saturday. all right, john,

and hear the charges against him. >> kron four's michael thomas following the story for us live down at the redwood city hall of justice. >> good morning, michael. >> hi, good morning, everyone. this arraignment is set for one 30 this afternoon at the da's office told me this morning that the man was arrested on friday and he went straight from the hospital to being booked at the county jail with no bail when it comes to those charges. the da's office is that they're still really looking into. they're going to file charges. but we do know that the arrest was made and attempted murder. and now take a look. this is a man that we're talking about. he is 41 years old and his name is dharmesh patel. he's a doctor from pasadena. he was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder charges and child abuse. this comes after a car accident that took place on january second earlier this month. now on that, investigators do believe that this was done on purpose. patel was said to be driving his white tesla model y which drove off a cliff near double

slide with both his wife and 2 children, ages 7, 4, inside the vehicle. but the tesla landed in between several large boulders and fell at 250 feet. all 4 people did survive but suffered severe injuries. now, despite investigators having suspicion that the accident was done on purpose, the senate to da's office says investigators are still examining all potential causes of the crash. and that includes the possibility of a mechanical problem. as we know, tesla's can self operating again. the da's office said this morning we asked them charges be filed, that they are still looking into that. so again, it's set for one 30 as we get more information. we'll continue to give you guys a more information. but i think back to those live in the studio this morning. thank you very much, michael. it's 8.33 right now in the north bay, 9 people have to find another place to live because a fire broke out in rohnert park and a home saturday night on bernie's avenue. >> and it started in the garage. then it quickly spread to the rest of the home. it turns out the garage had been

converted into living quarters. so in total now, 9 people are displaced and they'll be getting help and where they can live the caused the fire is under investigation. >> and there was another fire band warehouse caught fire in santa rosa. this one required 5 fire engines. >> they responded to the scene saturday night on central avenue and they were able to put it out pretty quickly. then they search nobody but was inside. so no injuries, which is good. but firefighters say it appeared that people were living in. they're camping inside that building. it found evidence of that. so there are still investigating the cause. >> well, now to the peninsula where steph curry and his wife are asking atherton city leaders to stop construction of a townhome project is proposed for their neighborhood in a letter sent to the mayor, the celebrity couple cited safety and privacy concerns as the reason why there requesting this project not go through. they also plan to ask the town to invest in taller fencing and landscaping that might block the views of this property

into theirs. but the currys aren't the only ones opposing this project. fact a number of other at that. and residents have also expressed their concerns. >> in the east bay, a happy reunion for a family whose french bulldog was stolen at gunpoint last week. and you can see here khalilah back with her family. they got a call from a vet clinic in vallejo saying somebody dropped lua their dog off and they didn't leave any information or anything. there was a reward being offered. but and they got the dog back last monday. the owners are parking their car with their dog in richmond. would 2 people came up with guns said hand over their one year-old pop and then tried to steal the car, but they couldn't start the car, but they did get away with the dog. now the dog is back. but the robbers are still on the loose. southwest airlines say they lost 800 million dollars because of last month's meltdown during the holidays. and the ripple effects are still being felt the airline at the time had to cancel roughly 17,000 flights between

is expanding its investigation of southwest looking specifically at whether southwest exact set an unrealistic flight schedule. they knew they couldn't handle. >> in a statement, a dot spokesperson suggested that could amount to what quote, under federal law is considered an unfair and deceptive practice. continuing, quote, dot will leverage the full extent of its investigative and enforcement power to ensure consumers are protected. and this process will continue to evolve as the department learns more. there is some good news in the earnings call. southwest said its process. nearly all refunds and lost bag requests and 80% of reimbursements. it also said the crew software that appears to have caused most of the disruptions is being addressed specifically responding to the dot is new run of its investigation. southwest tells newsnation its holiday flight schedule was thoughtfully designed an offer to our customers with the backing of a solid plan to operate it. and with ample staffing.
