dot com as a resource as well to know about when these extra cold days come where you can go to warm up. >> well, you can see here demonstrations down broadway street in oakland as people gathered last night to protest the killing of tyree nichols. the graphic video of his beating and death at the hands of 5 members of the memphis police department was released friday night. all 5 of those officers have been fired and are now facing charges of second degree murder. >> the san francisco chapter of the naacp and community leaders came together to discuss the death of nichols kron. four's amanda hari has reaction. >> everyone at the meeting had a similar reaction to seeing the video of the arrest. shock and disgust. they say they want to make sure nothing similar ever happens here in the bay area. religious leaders, community members and even police chief bill scott.

>> all coming together to prevent another tragedy. they were discussing the death of tyree nichols and what measures need to be taken to prevent police brutality in the bay area brings us together. and when he calls chief scott says he condemns what happened in memphis along with shocking u.s.. there's no place for that in this profession. nichols was pulled over on january 7th for what police say was reckless driving body camera and street lamp camera footage shows a group of officers repeatedly beating nichols as he cries for his mother. nichols died 3 days later. chief scott says this incident is impacting police departments around the country that back policing and we have to keep doing what we need to do to continue to change for the better chief. scott says he holds people accountable and his department in a fair way to process. they also have a special unit created to prevent these types of incidents this field

training course options. and that is what they do for time. examine. >> procedures are protocols, tactical situations. >> and they come out of lesson learned so officers can train to be better. >> ordination on leadership. even when the sergeant is not president. retired police captain yolanda williams also spoke at the event. >> she says she was even more disappointed that 5 black officers were responsible for the beating. they also discredited to a certain extent black police officers. we fought so hard to become officers and police agencies for you and it was hard as it as a black person to get through it successfully. and then here we have 5 officers. >> with less than 6 years service who have actually destroyed everything we have chief scott says they haven't had any issues with protests or vandalism over the weekend since the video has been released. >> but he wants people to know

they have a right to protest. he just ask that they do so peacefully in the newsroom. amanda hari kron, 4 news. >> lawmakers on capitol hill are also reacting to that video showing the brutal attack of nickel. some saying they unfortunately don't think police reforms going to make a difference. washington, d.c., correspondent basil john has more. good morning. the nichols family attorney says he wants lawmakers and the president. >> to put police reform efforts back on the table. heartbreak. it was horrible, inhumane. that's how illinois democratic senator durbin described the brutal video of memphis police officers beating tyree nichols. >> and on abc's this week, he says there is a federal responsibility for police reform. we need a national conversation on this. we do not the denial or willful indifference. the video has brought calls from across the country for change and on cnn's state of the union, pennsylvania democratic congresswoman, some early says

the calls for change are growing. there are so many black cities across the country that have now live this. but it's painful every single time and never gets any easier. the nichols family attorney ben crump says he's urging congress to pass legislation to combat police misconduct. put the george floyd justice in policing back on the table to have the also push to get police reform. but ohio republican congressman jim jordan told nbc's meet the press. >> he doesn't think there's a law that can stop what happened in the video. i don't know that any law, any training, any reform is going to change. you know, that this man was handcuffed, they continue to be in. jordan also says there is a lack of good applicants joining the police around the country. >> and that needs to change reporting in washington. i'm basil, john. >> we go fund me account that was set up for the family of tyree. nichols has over a million dollars now in donations it was created saturday and it's. nearly on

its way to reaching its 1.2 million dollar goal. donations have been coming in after the video footage showing that violent arrest was made public friday night. >> it's 709, in today, a former assisted living facility. workers going to be rain for the death of a 94 year-old resident. 54 year-old leticia starling is charged with elder abuse. the contra costa county da's office says that rgsulted in the death of constantine canoun in august of 2021. starling was taking care of canoun at the atria walnut creek facility when he trank cleaning solution and was rushed to the hospital. he died days later from injuries to his stomach esophagus and part of his throat. the da says that starling willfully caused and permitted him to be in a situation. where is health was endangered. starling is being held in the martinez detention facility on $100,000. bail. >> 7.10, is the time. we'll take a break. well, i should

light heading into the city right now about 25 minutes may's to that fremont street exit, your san mateo bridge a little under 18 minutes. 82 want to one traveling across towards the peninsula. so we're busy, but it's not terrible. the richmond center fell bridge tolls to want to about 14 minutes and the golden gate bridge. 37 to the tolls about 32 minutes darya. james, back to you. thank you. reyna 7.32, developing news now. the man accused of trying to kill his family by driving them off a cliff near double slide is in jail right now. he is. and this afternoon he's expected to stand before a judge. >> to hear the charges against him with kron four's. michael thomas standing by live in redwood city outside the hall of justice morning. michael. >> good morning, yes, that arraignment is set for later on this afternoon. at one, 30 spoke with the da's said that on friday he was actually released from the hospital where he was being treated for injuries from that car crash straight from there. he was booked into the jail again for

attempted murder, a, you know, and when it comes to, if they're going to actually file charges, the da says, as of this morning, they're still working to figure that out. but let's get details and videos up on your screen. this is the 41 year-old. he is from pasadena and his name is de hard mash patel. he was arrested suspicion of attempted murder charges and child abuse. this comes after a car accident that took place on january. second earlier this month, one that investigators believe was done on purpose. patel was said to be driving his white tesla model y which drove off a cliff near double side with both his wife and 2 children, ages 7, 4, inside. well, the tesla landed in between several large boulders and fell about 250 feet. all 4 people did survive but suffered severe injuries. despite investigators having suspicion that the accident was done on purpose. again, the da's office said they're still investigating and investigators are examining all potential causes of the crash and that includes a

possibility of mechanical problems as tesla's can be self operating. now back out here live again. this arraignment is set for one 30 if they're going to file charges. we do not know. and the dea agents responded to my email about i would say 30 to 40 minutes ago saying that they're still working right now to decide if they will file. so we'll keep you guys updated and all of that as it comes out throughout the day. but for now, we'll send it back to us live in the studio. right? very good. thank you very much, michael. 7.34 in the north bay. now 9 people have to have a new place to live because it was a house that caught fire oohnert park and they all live there on the grounds. this is saturday night >> bernie's avenue. the blaze started in the garage and the garage had been converted into living space. so then after that, it quickly spread to the home and firefighters were able to put it out. but again, in total 9 people have been displaced by that fire. and there was a warehouse that caught fire in santa rosa. 5 fire engines responded to this one saturday night on central

avenue. they were able to put out the flames and they did a search for anybody who might be inside. but they didn't find anyone. so no injuries reported. however, firefighters did find evidence of people having camped inside that building. damage estimated at about 150,000. >> from santa rosa to the peninsula now where steph curry and his wife are asking atherton city leaders to stop construction of a townhome project proposed for their neighborhood in a letter sent to the mayor, the celebrity couple cited safety and privacy concerns as the reasons for their request. they also plan to ask the town to invest in taller fencing and landscaping to block any view that there might be into their property. but the kurds aren't the only ones opposing the project. in fact, a number of other atherton residents have also expressed their concerns. to the east bay. 5 people now under arrest in connection with 27 different convenience and liquor store robberies across the bay area. hayward police shared this surveillance video. one of the robberies, it only took well.

it took less than a minute. start to finish. if you count it. each of the stores say say was robbed of cash and cigarettes between july and december of last year during the arrest, police also recovered 2 loaded firearms and 2 replica firearms. >> in the east bay, a happy reunion for a family that had their french bulldog stolen at gunpoint during an attempted carjacking last week. take a look at the owners got a call from a vet clinic in vallejo saying that somebody dropped kaluuya off. they didn't leave any information about it. even though there was a reward being offered last monday, his owners were part of their car in richmond when 2 people approached with guns and said hand over their one year-old pop and then they also tried to steal the car by the way, that they could get it to start. that took off with the dog and the those people are still on the loose puck alloa is back home. for your money this morning. don't expect gas prices to go down even though

it is winter. there fewer cars on the road and it might mean lower prices usually. but this year, not so much. it. you'll notice that it's actually costing a little bit more. let's take a look at the prices and what they're finding since the middle of december. the price of gas is up increasing nationwide by more than $0.35 from the same time a month ago and nobody's immune 15 states now have averages of 3.50, a bus and above in california, we're above that. of course, 6 states. we're at that average last month. so we now more states are in the same boat and nobody no state is averaging less than $3.10 a gallon industry. analysts say it's not the demand fueling the increase in the prices, but rather the winter weather. thanks to the arctic blast that hit much of the country all the way down into texas. >> the extremely cold weather caused equipment failures at refineries. so as a result, gasoline production was disrupted.
