>> from the area's local news station. you're watching the kron. 4 morning news at 4. >> well, good monday morning and thank you for waking up with this broad early for the kron. 4 morning news today is monday. january 29th. i'm reyna harvey. hopefully you had a great weekend. me, you know, not the best with the game, but let's talk about some other things like the weather. john sabol back in the house. john, did you bring the cold with you? i think i did because it was chilly out there yesterday and cold this morning. >> we're looking at some really cold temperatures dropping us and a freeze warning and frost advisory territory. so get those layers on as you're about to be heading out this monday. start. we're sitting at the

downtown san francisco camera. you can see skies are overall pretty nice and clear. we're going to be looking at a beautiful sunny afternoon. just got to get through these cold temperatures. first, morgan hill, san mateo livermore, dublin brentwood in concord, among spots in the 30's right now will add to the list petaluma sain calistoga an lot more of a set to be dropping into the 30's at points this morning. this is enough to be prompting freeze warnings in the darker blue hues and in the lighter blue closer to the coastline in the bayshore. those are frost advisories. temperatures at or very coal dust in our inland valleys falling into the upper 20's. this prolonged freeze this morning, definitely posing a risk to those plants that are for us. the septa bull just bring the pets indoors. hopefully you got the plants covered up last night. overall, though, clear and cold to get this week started off with as far as what we have the rest of the day today. radar shows nice clearing skies. yesterday we saw a few isolated showers

of those officers were charged and are charged with second degree murder. now the san francisco chapter of the naacp and community leaders all came together to discuss the death of nichols kron. four's amanda hari has reaction from community leaders including the city's police chief. >> everyone at the meeting had a similar reaction to seeing the video of the arrest. shock and disgust. they say they want to make sure nothing similar ever happens here in the bay area. religious leaders, community members and even police chief bill scott. >> all coming together to prevent another tragedy. they were discussing the death of tyree nichols and what measures need to be taken to prevent police brutality in the bay brown brings us together and what he calls chief scott says he condemns what happened in memphis along with shocking u.s.. there's no place for that in this profession. nichols was pulled over on january 7th for what police say was reckless

driving body camera and street lamp camera footage shows a group of officers repeatedly beating nichols as he cries for his mother. nichols died 3 days later. chief scott says this incident is impacting police departments around the country that back and we have to keep doing what we need to do to continue to change for the better chief. scott says he holds people accountable and his department in a fair way to process. they also have a special unit created to prevent these types of incidents. the name of field training course options. and that is what they do for time. examine. >> procedures are protocols, tactical situations. >> and they come out of that lesson learned sore officers trained to be better. >> coronation on leadership even when the sergeant is not president. retired police captain yolanda williams also spoke at the event. >> she says she was even more

disappointed that 5 black officers were responsible for the beating. they also discredited to a certain extent black police officers. we fought so hard to become officers and police agencies for you and it was hard as it as a black person to get through it successfully. and then here we have 5 officers. >> with less than 6 years service who have actually destroyed everything we have for. chief scott says they haven't had any issues with protests or vandalism over the weekend since the video has been released. >> but he wants people to know they have a right to protest. he just ask that they do so peacefully in the newsroom. amanda hari kron, 4 news now. the gofundme account set up for terry nichols. family has over 1 million dollars in donations pages created on saturday and it's well on its way to making the goal of 1.2 million dollars donations have been pouring in after the

video footage showing that violent arrest was made public. we have some developing news for you because the man accused of trying to kill his family. i driving off of the san mateo cliff crashing more than 200 feet below is in jail right now. 41 year-old are nash to tell. now he was released from the hospital and booked on suspicion of attempted murder and child abuse and vesta gators believe on january. 2nd, patel intentionally drove his tesla off the cliff with his wife and 2 young kids inside. miraculously, all of them survived. that crashed with pretty serious injuries. patel is being held at the san mateo county jail without bail. you could be arraigned sometime today if the district attorney moves forward with criminal charges. also happening today, a former assistant living facility worker will be rain for the death of a 94 year-old resident. that's 54. you all that. he she is starling and she's charged with elder abuse

that the contra costa county district attorney office says resulted in the death of constantine county. you in august of 2021. da's office is starling was taking care of the victim at atria walnut creek when he drank a cleaning solution. he was rushed to the hospital but died days later from injuries to his stomach. his esophagus in parts of his throat. now, the da says starling willfully cause and permitted him to be in a situation where his health was in danger. starling is being held in the martinez detention facility on $100,000. bail. well in the east bay emeryville, police arrested a man accused of driving drunk and hit a pedestrian that happened on shell mount street right near the ikea and 80 saturday afternoon. the person is in critical condition. the driver of that car ran away but was caught just a blocks later, police arrested him for felony dui hit and run as well as gun possession. now we're

learning more about the motive in the mass shooting in half bay that killed 7 people. a california prosecutor told the bay area news group that a dispute over $100 in work related repairs that bill spur the violence. they say 66 year old chanley zao told investigators he went to his supervisor about the bill saying that his co worker was to blame for the collision between his forklift and the co-workers. bulldozer supervisor insisted that he pay. then that rampage began zao charged with 7 counts of premeditated murder and one count of attempted murder. investigators say he admitted the killing in the jailhouse interview on thursday. but he did not enter a plea at his arraignment. he's being held in jail without bail. now. and stop the moderate part shooter from carried out another massacre was given a hero's welcome on sunday. this is that video that scene the

>> dipping into the low to mid 30's overnight for the call would have have multiple blankets. the national weather service issued a freeze watch for many inland areas prompting santa clara county to open warming centers. crawford's gayle ong has those details. take a listen. >> after days of warm temperatures, cold weather is expected to continue into wednesday morning. the national weather service is anticipating frost and freezing temperatures. santa clara county libraries will be available as warming centers to help residents cope with the cold. the county will have several locations open during the day where people can go to warm up, including libraries in cupertino, gilroy, los gatos, no peaches and morgan hill business hours very thankfully, i have. >> heater and so i'm good. thank you, josh. raja have been enjoying the dry weather and is now preparing for the coal. i was our you know, it's who's not right now, but normally when it's cold, the chilly temperatures can make for hazardous conditions for those most vulnerable to cold

temperatures including unhoused people, the santa clara county office of emergency says people in san jose who need overnight shelter can reach out to the phone number or email you see here on your screen, a number of unhoused people die due to cold exposure last month in the county, the emergency management office shares these tips to take precautions against hypothermia and to seek shelter. avoid being outside during the coldest part of the day dress in layers, wear a hat, scarf and gloves, mittens, wear waterproof, insulated boots to avoid hypothermia or frostbite. and stay hydrated. >> and the is offering free bus rides to the warming centers. community members will just have to let the drivers know which locations they're going to and coming back from. no proof is required. reporting from cupertino. gayle ong kron. 4 news. all right. thank you for that gales. good to know about those warming centers. if you need to get out of the cold. >> john sabol is back to kind of get us started an early walk us through a long these cold temps going to stick around. yeah, fortunately, just a couple more hours. this

until 09:00am. we are under freeze warnings and frost advisories which >> is an extended amount of time to be below freezing, which is the whole purpose of the freeze warnings, getting yourself your pets indoors and covering those plants hopefully already did so last night before you went to bed, this is where we're at this morning golden gate bridge. crystal clear. it sees clear calm mornings, though, that we oftentimes see our coldest of temps. yesterday. we had a few showers working across the bay area. all that energy is shifted to the south. now now at some snow up in the mountains above la and some rainfall for the southern into the central valley in the bay area. quieting things down. it seems clear conditions during our overnight hours compared with those still conditions and cold air that is sifted through the bay area that has allowed temperatures to get so cold. we're down into freeze warning and frost advisory territory this morning. freeze warnings in the deeper blue frost advisories in that light blue. and we're going to be there through 09:00am now as far as temperatures go later on today, we work our way out of the 30's and back up into

the 50's millbrae. 51 degrees for your daytime high today. foster city at 54 saying carlos in redwood city each 53 degrees, south bay temperatures in the low to mid 50's for your highs. similar range for the east bay, although pleasanton livermore and not even leaving the 40's. only up to 49 degrees. definitely weather. even with all the sunshine that we're going to have that will make you want to keep the jackets on all the way through the afternoon. as far as the rest of the forecast goes, we're not going to stay quite as cold. daytime highs will rise into the mid to upper 50's for the rest of the forecast. as far as our lows, most of those should remain above freezing starting tomorrow morning, february 1st, kicking off on wednesday and doing so in a dry know next chance of showers will be here thursday evening into friday morning. a better chance looking likely into early next week, right? all right, john, thank you for that update. >> hey, if you're heading into the city, it's going to take about.7 minutes to make that drive. so no major also don't see any reports about bart

to the public so you can go ahead and going out there. let's switch gears because over the weekend, americans reacted to the video released by the memphis police department that show what happened to terry nichols during a traffic stop is graphic. it is horrific. washington correspondent basil john joins us live with reaction from lawmakers as a lot of people just very upset by this video. >> well, good morning. and yes, many people throughout the country are upset about this, but some people, especially the nichols family, want something done about it. so the nichols family attorney has said that he wants lawmakers and the president to bring police reform efforts back to the table. heartbreak. >> it was horrible, inhumane. that's how illinois democratic senator durbin described the brutal video of memphis police officers beating tyree nichols. and on abc's this week, he says there is a

federal responsibility for police reform. we need a national conversation on this. we do not the denial or willful indifference. the video has brought calls from across the country for change. and on cnn state of the union, pennsylvania democratic congresswoman summer league says the calls for change are growing. there are so many black cities across the country that have not lived this but it's painful every single time and never gets any easier. the nichols family attorney ben crump says he's urging congress to pass legislation to combat police misconduct. put the george floyd justice in policing back on the table to have the also push to get police reform. but ohio republican congressman jim jordan told nbc's meet the e press. >> he doesn't think there's a law that can stop what happened in the video. i don't know that any law, any training, any reform is going to change. you know, that this man was handcuffed, they continue to be him. >> now, jordan also says that there is a lack of good

applicants trying to join the police throughout the country. and that needs to change reporting live in washengton. i'm basil, john. all right, basil, thanks for the update. okay. so now the memphis police permanently disbanded the scorpion unit. >> that's the task force at the center of the death of terry nichols. all 5 officers on your screen. they were all fired and they're charged in nickel staff. they were members of that unit. now the team was originally tasked with tackling gang activity, a violent crime ineresponse to nichols death. and the recent demonstrations, the department moved to dismantle that squad. memphis pd representatives at the remaining officers assigned to that unit agree with that decision saying the heinous actions of a few is casting a cloud of dishonor on that team. still to come on the kron, 4 morning news, we're going to introduce you to a group of dancers >> that are going to be performing at san francisco's lunar new year parade will be right back after the break.

based out of san francisco. they're going to be performing at the upcoming san francisco lunar new year parade. one of the organizers spoke about what this year celebration means to them. the message she is too. >> not only celebrate the achievement and success of chinese, american, or income, but also to go against. the asian hate and violence. and promote unity. >> nop the lunar new year parade is scheduled for february 4. now over in the east bay. let's head over there. the oakland zoo. we'll talk about that. a sudden you see finishing his beautiful dancers. okay. now the oakland zoo says its mountain lion cub named hazel is continuing to get stronger and stronger by the day. now, exploring her environment a little more. the zoo began caring for the 4 to 5 months all come from santa cruz. this is for earlier this month. at the time she was
