injuries. today the victims were identified. also today, the suspect in the rampage appeared in court in redwood city to face 7 counts of murder and one charge of attempted murder. thank you for joining us for kron. 4 news at 6. i'm pam moore. i'm ken wayne. the suspected gunman made his first court appearance today while we are learning more about the victims tonight, we have team coverage on the new developments in that shooting. >> kron four's rob nesbitt. talk to some community members in half. moon bay has more information about the victims. and for us, we will check in with kron four's dan kerman. he's been following the court hearing in redwood city. and what's the latest? we can tell you the child was in court just for a few minutes, very brief appearance. he did not enter a plea, but he tried to >> cover up his face during that brief appearance with a piece of paper not wanting to show his face to those who are in attendance at the hearing. >> 66 year-old chen li zhao made his first court appearance wednesday. he's

been charged with 7 counts of murder and one count of attempted murder for monday's to half moon bay farms because he's been charged with the special circumstance of multiple murder. if convicted, he will face either life without parole or the death penalty. i plan to learn everything i can about this man before i make that decision. >> and i want to learn everything about victims and the impact that this has how widespread the impact is on the victims. families shall continually tried to cover his face during wednesday's brief court appearance. he did not enter a plea but was appointed 2 private attorneys to handle his defense. the judge also granted prosecutors request to hold joe without bail. 7 counts of murder. we have not had in san mateo county before. a case with one instance of 7 murders that once. >> he is not. a citizen of this country. there's plenty of motive to run for that reason. it was to me a very straightforward and simple request for no bail.

>> the da confirm joe did make statements to sheriff's deputies that he used a ruger semiautomatic pistol. the note was found in his car and that he believes he knows the motive for what authorities have called workplace violence. but he would not elaborate nor would he say if the victims were targeted because he doesn't want the case moved out of the county due to pretrial publicity. he also had a message for victims. families. >> i have been my career dealt with many, many, many families who have suffered horrible losses on that line. and so i will have not walked in their shoes. i certainly have learned of their shoes and i would say to them that the one thing they can count on is that the san mateo county district attorney's office will do everything in its power, working with the sheriff's office to make sure that justice is done here and that the right outcome occurs and we will be talking to them. >> and joe will remain behind bars. as i mentioned without bail. his next court appearance scheduled for february 16th live at the

courthouse in redwood city. dan kerman kron. 4 news. thank you, dan. san mateo county officials have identified the 7 victims killed in monday's mass shooting. kron four's. stephanie lin has more. >> investigators say the gunman shot and killed 7 of his co-workers and what they're calling an act of workplace violence. we know an 8th person was also shot. there are now recovering and in stable condition after surgery. the victims include 74 year-old i schoen's on from san francisco. 73 year-old says send from san francisco. 66 year-old. she's on the tone from half moon bay. 64 year-old zulu from half moon bay, 50 year-old marciano, martinez jimenez speech. 43 year-old get how being and jose romero perez. we also now know the name of the surviving victim, pedro romero, perez, the community has come together in several ways to help those affected by this tragedy. you can find more

information on how you can help right now on our website. kron 4 dot com, stephanie lin kron. 4 news. >> we are starting to learn more about the victims in the half moon bay shooting. we want to show you a picture of jose romero perez. he was one of the 7 people who was killed monday in that mass shooting. also, we have a picture of marciano, martinez jimenez. he also died in the shooting happened bay. he was just 50 years old speech. we now know their names, but many in half moon bay have known the victims for years. they're part of the community and people there are showing their love and honoring those victims through flowers and candles and messages that have been place downtown. >> kyle up nesbitt joins us live from that show park with more on the growing memorial >> this memorial has been growing all week and downtown half moon bay since the news first broke about the mass shooting today in more than doubled in size and the 7

victims who were killed, their names were added to candles. >> 7 names and 7 members of the half moon bay community gone. remember through every flower place at the corner of main and kelly, the memorial grew even larger wednesday, especially after kathy repair do visit close to 100 vo case provided by her flower shop and nursery on san mateo road. the same road with the victims were murdered. her and frank think everybody in the community. >> because it's just a shock. >> and necessary the families of the 7 victims have received a lot of support, especially from the farm worker outreach team at all us. it's where clothes and food donations have been pouring in all week. if one small element of that. >> emotional plate can be alleviated. that would be great. according to program coordinator at all u.s. and russ nc on roughly 40 people are still staying in hotels. they've been missing work. >> they're displaced from their homes. and they were able you know, grab any of

their personal since that the charging she's been in direct contact with those into the 5 men and 2 women best. >> but says it will take some time before they're ready to come forward and share their memories. they're still in shock right now and processing. and we want to be, you know, very mindful of. you know, their privacy and to give them their space while they grieve lawmakers advocate. i mean, you should see where these folks are living. the conditions shedding light on the life of a migrant worker live in shipping containers from their small homes to a lack of adequate pay. vice mayor joaquin jimenez is hoping that the lives lost will just be remembered with flowers and candles, but also honored with real change is being exposed. how are from local communities living the living conditions? let's not ignore that. the mental health support that they need not ignored. >> on monday when i spoke to volunteers, the need for victims, families at the

reunification center was blankets and food. today. >> they're in need of clothing, especially undergarments, such as t-shirts, socks and underwear. we have a link com. you can click to find out where to send and drop off those donations. reporting live in half moon bay. i'm rob nesbitt kron 4 news. thank you, rob. and in fact, in the wake of this tragedy, a number of local organizations are stepping up to help the victims families. one of those efforts is in san jose. a woman has been asking her neighbors to donate items for the farm workers who are now displaced because of the shootings. the contributions filled the trunk of her car this morning, fruit and juices comforters. among the things given to the nonprofit group called farm worker care of that. >> that group is helping collect items to families who are now living in motels as police continue to investigate the shooting. >> when we went there, there was a lot of children that were running around. and so not all farms have such a family atmosphere like they

did when the shooting happened. there were children present. so this is something that's going to stick with them for the rest of their lives. >> another organization called is also helping people affected by the mass shooting. last is accepting financial donations. a gofundme page has been set up. its goal is to reach $40,000. you can check on our website kron 4 dot com for more details following the latest string of mass shootings in the u.s.. the secret service published a 60 page report today that details trends in mass attacks in public spaces. the report details 173 attacks. it her 3 or more people in public spaces, including churches and schools from 2016 to 2020 among the findings, a personal grievance was the single most common motive. but a quarter of the attackers were motivated by conspiracy theories or hateful ideologies. study also found that at least 6 of the attackers were radicalized

online. the agency said the trans could help community leaders know what red flags to look for for somebody else carries out the next mass attack. switching gears now to our 4 zone forecast and look at the backup at the bay bridge toll plaza. well, at least they're in rain. lawrence, standing by to tell us what's ahead this week. yeah, beautiful weather around the bay really spring-like conditions out there as we saw high pressure overhead. we have the offshore wind setting some of these temperatures. >> i shut the mid 70's in parts of the bay area out there this evening. the sun setting. what will be another clear night around the bay. area's high pressure sits over head that ridge, aubrey with the clear skies out there now clear skies for tomorrow, too. temperatures. yeah, oppressive 72 degrees in santa rosa. 72 in antioch, 70 degrees today in mountain view, 70 in hayward, 65 degrees in oakland. 65 in san francisco. 67, even in half moon bay, a cool numbers down around the board, though. now you've got 50's 60's across most of the

bay area now and still we'll get a little chilly overnight tonight. some places likely to dip in the upper 30's in some of the interior valleys. but as long as that big ridge of high pressure right there sticks around. we've got a lot of sunshine comihg our way again for tomorrow. those offshore winds are also blowing outside with those offshore winds. but we're going to see some nice temperatures again, i think by tomorrow afternoon could see a couple numbers speak in the low 70's. we'll show you where talk about the chance of rain coming up a few minutes words coming up. new details on the shooting in oakland that left one person dead and several others injured. >> what investigators and city leaders say they know about the suspects and another home renda sliding down a hill. how the neighborhood is dealing with this problem.

>d oakland police are still searching for the people involved in monday night's mass shooting at a gas station. it happened during a music video shoot. many were injured. one person died today. a newly elected oakland city councilmember talked about his plan to try to decrease gun violence. kron four's haaziq madyun has the story. >> open is a resilient town with proud people and we'll tak sick and tired of the violence taking office in a few weeks later. and mass shooting happens in your district. that is the scenario for new oakland city councilmember kevin jenkins.

monday night's mass shooting at a valero gas station, wounded 7 people and killed an 18 year-old man. >> opd investigators say a music video was being recorded at the time on that corridor of avenue. we have cry the studio. >> where children and i mean, it's been made quite studio, but we have children practicing martial arts and they have to deal with knowing that someone was harmed in their community. >> councilmember jenkins is a lifetime local resident who says he's all too familiar with the history of gun violence in yeah, this is first time it's happened on my watch. a city council member. i grew up in open, as you said and don't every year they would have january first, it would have a list of everyone that was a victim of homicide in the city. and i grew up looking at that after i turned 18 to see who i knew that die. and so that's not a normal thing. and no young should have to go to that. he talks about his plan on addressing senseless shootings. now that he's in a position to make a

difference. so when i was running and we ran on addressing the root causes of crime, i would makes people go out and commit crime. and also we have to look at enabling opd to be able to do their job. however, he says he doubts that chief leronne armstrong who is currently on leave, would have been able to prevent the shooting from happening if he was still in i've seen things on social media about, you know, that she had been in place. this wouldn't happen. but i don't think that she being there with a stop. this has kron. 4 news. >> also in the east bay, police are searching for a man who allegedly attempted to kidnap a woman near the uc berkeley campus happened last night at the intersection of hearst and euclid avenues. according to police, the suspect came up behind the woman grabbed her by the arm and threatened to sexually assault her. the woman was able to run away. police released the video that you see there of the suspect. these highlighted walking through there described as a bald white man in his 40's. he's about 6 feet tall, has a thin to medium build anybody

who has any information on that man is asked to call berkeley police. new developments involving the investigation of the tesla crash at devil's slide off of highway one earlier this month. >> prosecutors are exploring whether it was caused by a mechanical error. 41 year-old dharmesh patel of pasadena was charged with attempted murder and child abuse because authorities originally suspected the crash was intentional but tell his wife and their 2 children managed to survive. after the nearly 300 foot plunge. that was back on january. the second a witness told police said she saw the car speeding make a u-turn and then go over the edge. san mateo county district attorney wagstaffe says investigators are now inspecting the tesla for any possible brake failures or malfunctions in san francisco. a person has died from injuries after being taken from a burning building in the patrol hill neighborhood. the

fire broke out around 11:00am. fire officials say when they arrived on the scene, they saw smoke. >> coming out of the 3rd floor of the building on turner terrace. 3 other people were rescued. they were not injured. fire crews put out the fire pretty quickly. the cause of the fire is still under investigation in the east bay. yet another family in or renda has been displaced from their home because of a mudslide. >> after weeks of rain slammed the bay area, this is now the second home on cedar lane to be red tagged. we reported last week about a home slipping down a hillside in that neighborhood. that family is still displaced as things are getting worse in the area. kron four's philippe djegal tells us city and county officials plan for the next step. >> cedar lane in orinda remains closed to everyone except residents, police and building inspectors. this after a home slid down the hillside last wednesday following weeks of heavy rain prompting the city and contra costa county building department. red tagged the

slipping house. the family living there has been displaced and over the weekend, their neighbors were too. initially the second home was yellow tag which allowed for the family to at least pack some of their things. but on saturday night, acting city manager doug alessio says it was upgraded to a red tag, meaning it's off limits to us because of a movement of the debris on that. >> a partial next door, which has the more extensive damage. drone footage filmed friday shows the damage alessio says building inspectors are exploring all options to mitigate the problem. it's unclear if the homes can be permanently stabilized if they need to be demolished. we're monitoring it every so we have a variety ways of doing that. we have a >> city staff that goes up and monitors every morning. we have the county building department there inspector is visiting at least twice a week. we have the police up

regularly monitoring and we do drone fired over the property, a daily basis. neighbors on the quiet street who spoke off camera say the ordeal has been stressful. >> it has also attracted out of towners what a few occasions have tried to sneak onto the troubled properties at this time. alessio says it appears no other homes will require yellow or red tags. there have been nobody in this incident. we hope to keep it that way in orinda philippe djegal all kron 4 news. let's get a check on our weather forecast for the midweek. looking at the san mateo bridge, which is very busy at this hour. everybody's out driving right now, lawrence, i know what's going on, but at least you're not dealing with some bad weather. yeah, you know, we really need to break. you see from videos of some of those slides and >> issues with some of home still coming down, possibly so. get a nice break. some spring-like weather around the bay area. now that's gonna last a little bit longer. but now. >> starting to see some changes on the horizon. probably gonna start get back some wet weather. maybe as early as this weekend. so out

there tonight, kind of an interesting day today. it was warm around a good part of the bay area. you can see the big ship running right underneath the golden gate bridge right now, clear skies out of the bridge. no fog to speak of there. as we look to the night tonight, still going to be a little bit chilly in some spots inland, but not quite as cold as last night took a dip into the 30's in some of the interior valleys tomorrow. we'll be mostly sunny and mild again. maybe the warm, especially in parts of the north and the east bay with a chance of rain does return over the weekend of the door right now to 61 degrees and clear skies and san jose. 54 cooling off now in san mateo. 56 in oakland, 64 nap and 66 degrees. now it's high pressure. still bringing lots of sunshine in the bay area. and we have that offshore wind to go along with that. that really help to warm up the temperatures today tomorrow. can see that offshore wind continuing. so these numbers still going to be running a good 10 plus degrees above the average in parts of the bay area. but after that, we start to see the pattern beginning to switch. so quite often we'll see a little break in p% late january, almost like a fake spring. and then we get to february all of a sudden you start to get slammed by

storms again. this next storm system approaching the much colder storm begin to see a drop down right there on the gulf of alaska. not going to have a lot of rain associated maybe get a 10th of an inch of rain with that. if you get senegal, but it is going to be much, much colder. these temperatures, maybe good 20. maybe 25 degrees cooler than what we had today. so much colder air on the way. and then it looks like return to more active weather pattern outside here in the bay area. so let's enjoy that sunshine for a couple more days. tomorrow should be a beautiful day. 60's and going to be calm. and next couple days we've that ridge breaking down much cooler temperatures. a chance of showers on sunday. thank you, lawrence. coming up as tax season begins, what you need to look out for to avoid scams.

>> for your money tonight, it is that time of year tax season has started and the irs wants us to all be aware of possible scammers. the internal revenue service is once again reminding taxpayers to choose a tax return preparer with caution. the irs says taxpayers need to sue somebody that they believe provides honest and quality service be vigilant. if you believe your preparer is involved in some kind of fraud, identity theft or another scam. and ultimately remember, taxpayers themselves

are responsible for all of the information on their income tax returns. regardless of who prepares return. >> be sure you are wary of people that are trying to take your information. so this is your information. and i don't even have chewl identity listed on social media profiles. you have consultation with their proms new, a certain amount of money. that's a big flag. >> taxpayers should also expect a decrease in their refunds this year, according to the irs. that's because last year there were credit and tax incentives because of covid and those incentives are no longer available. also be sure to submit returns prior to the deadline to avoid paying any penalties. and the deadline for taxpayers is april the 18th. california lawmakers have introduced a bill to tax the state's wealthiest residents. it would tax an extra one and a half percent on people with a net worth of 1 billion dollars. the bill also calls for a one

we have learned the names of the 7 half moon bay victims. all of this just days after a gunman opened fire at a dance studio in monterey park on saturday. that attack leaving 11 people dead and 9 others injured in southern california. tens of thousands of people are affected by recent mass shootings. joining us now to help us better. >> cope with the pain in the aftermath of the shooting is doctor david spiegel with stanford health care. doctor spiegel, thanks for joining us. we want to talk about how all of us can try to cope because just seeing this on the news and us reporting it is emotionally difficult. but let's focus more on the immediate victims of this. the survivors of mass shootings and their families. how can they get help? what do they need to know to get through this difficult time? >> well, you know, the reality is suddenly and painfully torn apart and changed. and the thing that helps the most is a sense
