>> from the bay area's local news station. you're watching kron. 4 news at all. my focus, my office's focus will be on hold this man accountable for what get. >> tonight at 5 as the gunman in monday's mass shooting in half moon bay made his first appearance in court today. we're learning more about the lives lost, says the suspect now faces 7 counts of murder. thanks for joining us tonight on kron. 4 news at 5, everybody. i'm grant lotus and i'm vicki liviakis. the man prosecutors say is responsible for monday's massacre in half moon bay made his first court appearance today. julie zhao is charged with 7 counts of murder and one count of attempted murder and what has been dubbed workplace violence at 2 nearby farms. kron four's dan kerman was in court today. he joins us now live from the

san mateo county courthouse in redwood city with more. g evening debt. good evening, joe was in court literally just for minutes. he did not enter a plea today, but he will be held in jail without bail until his next court appearance. >> wearing a jail issue jumpsuit. the man accused of murdering 7 farmworkers and wounding another it to half moon bay farms. monday made his first court appearance wednesday afternoon. 66 year-old chen li zhao faces 7 counts of murder and one count of attempted murder all with special circumstances, which means the district attorney can seek the death penalty if convicted of all charges making that decision on the death penalty is something that will take place over the course >> of the next many, many months as we do. we have so much more to learn about this individual about the victims and their families and the harm that's been inflicted here. so we have a long way to go before we make that

decision. just spent most of his brief court appearance trying to keep his face covered. he did not enter a plea but was appointed 2 private attorneys to handle his defense. the judge also granted the da's request to hold jail without bail. 7 counts of murder. we have not had in san mateo county before. a case with one instance of 7 murders that once he is not. a citizen of this country. there's plenty of motive to run for that reason. it was to me a very straightforward and simple request for no bail. the da confirm shout did make statements to sheriff's deputies and that he used a ruger semiautomatic pistol. that a note was found in his car and that he believes he knows the motive for what authorities have called workplace violence. but the da would not elaborate. nor would he say if the victims were targeted. so it's not the sully, the jury pool. we want to make sure that this man gets a fair trial that the victims families get justice through a fair trial and that

the case gets it right here in the community in which it was committed. again, this defendant did not enter a plea today. that is likely at his next court appearance, which will be february 16th. >> live at the county courthouse in redwood city. dan kerman kron. 4 news. dan, thank you. >> meanwhile, san mateo county officials have identified the 7 people killed in monday's mass shooting. he's called for stephanie lived. >> investigators say the gunman shot and killed 7 of his co-workers and what they're calling an act of workplace violence. we know an 8th person was also shot. they're now recovering and in stable condition after surgery. the victims include 74 year-old i schoen's on from san francisco. 73 year-old says send from san francisco. 66 year-old. tone from half moon bay. 64 year-old genes in lieu from half moon bay, 50 year-old marciano, martinez jimenez speech. 43 year-old

woman, grabbed her by the arm and threatened to sexually assault her. the woman was able to run away. police released a video of the suspect is described as a bald white man in his 40's, approximately 6 feet tall has a thin to medium build and he's wearing a black jacket. white shirt, jeans and white sneakers. >> the man known as the telegraph hill rapist has been convicted of sexually assaulting a san francisco woman at knifepoint after breaking into her home today a jury found 35 year-old jones guilty on multiple rape and burglary charges. the assault happened in 2013. san francisco's telegraph hill neighborhood jones is facing a minimum of 25 years to life in state prison when he's sentenced at the end of february. >> new at 5, we're learning new details now about jeremy renner's. new year's day accident where he was crushed by his snow removal tractor. a sheriff's incident report says that the actor was run over by his snow cat while trying to stop it from running over his

nephew. investigators say the parking brake was not engaged at the time. it began sliding after runner head exited the snow groomer. officials say the brake indicator light in the snow cats cab was not working and mechanical issues may have been a factor in the accident. runner broke more than 30 bones in his body and is now recovering at his home. >> none of the forty-niners who met with the media today ahead of their huge game coming up sunday in philadelphia. and we learned that the key player, the 49 er accused in a domestic violence incident this week is on track to play our kron erin joins us now with more on this controversial story. what what are you learning? >> well, just that as you just mentioned, that he more than likely will play. and that's because as mentioned, it was a misdemeanor domestic violence charge. and so far they're letting the law enforcement take care of the investigation. so right now after the news broke of the

niners defensive end charles omenihu being charged with that misdemeanor domestic violence charge. the big question was if he would play this sunday against the eagles. well, like i said, the short answer is yes. today, head coach kyle shanahan also revealed that a man he was limited today in practice as he nurses that a bleak injury he sustained during the cowboys matchup this past weekend will when asked about i mean, he was charged. sanon said he trusts that the legal process will take care of itself. and if he's healthy, he expects him to play. he also mentioned that right now many use places right here in san francisco with the forty-niners. >> we looked into for the last 24 hours or 48 hours not to say myself and other people. we feel very good and the legal process take care of i don't feel we shouldn't cut them off or team of the stuff. >> now everything stays as it is. you can expect to see a man who on the field some sunday, a win this week for the niners will not only mean in the nfc championship, but it will also set a new

>> vicki and grant this memorial behind me has been growing all week today and more than doubled in size and the names of the victims were added to candles. >> 7 names and 7 members of the half moon bay community gone. remember through every flower place at the corner of main and kelly, the memorial grew even larger wednesday, especially after kathy repair do visit close to 100 bo case provided by her flower shop and nursery on san mateo road. the same road with the victims were murdered. her and for i think everybody in the community. >> because it's just a shock. >> and necessary shown the families of the 7 victims have received a lot of support, especially from the farm worker outreach team at all us. it's where clothes and food donations have been pouring in all week for the roughly 40 people still displaced, according to program coordinator, sanders said see on they've been missing work. >> they're displaced from their homes. and they were able you know, grab any of their personal since that the

she's been in direct contact with those into the 5 men and 2 women best. >> but says it will take some time before they're ready to come forward and share their memories. they're still in shock right now in processing. and we want to be, you know, very mindful of. you know, their privacy and to give them their space while they grieve lawmakers advocate. i mean, you should see where these folks are living. the conditions shedding light on the life of a migrant worker living in shipping containers from their small homes to a lack of adequate pay. vice mayor joaquin jimenez is hoping that the lives lost will just be remembered with flowers and candles, but also honored with real change exposed. how are from local communities living the living conditions? let's not ignore that. the mental health support that they need not ignored. >> when i talked to volunteers on monday, the day of the mass shooting that need that and the reunification center was

>> developing story now, another family in orinda cannot stay at their home because of a landslide. a second home on cedar lane has been red tagged as a conference. philippe reports for us tonight. city and county officials are considering their next steps. >> shifting debris and damage from a red tag home on cedar lane in orinda lead city and

contra costa county building inspectors and upgrade the neighboring house from a yellow tag to a red tag saturday night. meaning no one is allowed on the property. both families are displaced and they're in a >> temporary. housing and other locations and the the path forward is going to pick while and i'm on certain exactly what that looks like. a sliding home which forced the street closure last wednesday has caused the spectacle unwelcomed by neighbors who say has drawn out of towners into their quiet neighborhood. >> an attempt to enter the properties in question are first and foremost concern is public safety and the health and safety are residents. there have nobody in this incident. we hope to keep it. that was still acting city managers does. alessio says building inspectors are exploring all options to mitigate the problem. it's unclear if the homes can be permanently stabilized or if they need to be demolished. >> the hillside gave way after weeks of heavy rain. there's.

>> no other indication that at the current moment there's a for any other home to be either yellow or red tag. alessio says city and county inspectors are monitoring the homes on a daily basis and that the road will indefinitely remain closed to everyone except residents. >> and emergency crews in orinda philippe djegal all kron. 4 news. >> damage from this month's winter storms keeping some roads closed and solano county, the board of supervisors there says pleasant valley road is going to be shut down between mix canyon and gates canyon road for about a month to clean up debris from the mudslides there. the county says crews have already begun emergency cleanup work, which will be performed 7 days a week. all right. her to believe those storms were just a month ago. yeah. last. yes. we need to break lighting roads wash. yeah. and so, you know, the ground is still saturated. even though things have settled down a little bit weather wise. but we've got

more storms on the horizon today. really almost a spring-like outside. some temperatures shooting in the mid 70'r outside. so beautiful. >> offshore winds bringing sunshine all the way along the coastline. gorgeous out there right now as we head into the evening hours. still, 66 degrees in downtown san jose. 66 also in fremont. 63 in san francisco, a 68 degrees in timber on how about 70 still in santa rosa? and 71 insanely. this is some very nice numbers, especially in the north bay right now, high those offshore winds that was just enough to crank up the temperatures outside the jet stream still staying well to the north. that's keeping chance of rain in the bay area. kind of staying know the north as well. so right now we're going to keep you high and dry and bring us some more nice sunshine by tomorrow afternoon. maybe couple low 70's again tomorrow cool just slightly. but still very nice out there. the offshore winds are going to continue likely breezy over the mountain tops, especially in the north bay in parts of the east bay. the diablo range, nothing too strong, 20 some 30 mile an hour gust. but that ridge is sticking around. as long as

that ridge sticks around. we'll see a lot of sunshine, some mild, even some warm temperatures outside and mostly clear skies. we may see a hint of fog developing along the north bay by tomorrow afternoon. but temperature wise, we're looking good. how about 69 degrees in santa rosa? maybe 70 in concord. 66 degrees in san jose and about 65 degrees in oakland over the next few days. and that sunshine stick around on friday saturday. we begin to notice some changes and then on sunday there's a chance of a few scattered showers. looks like is going to be very light, probably less than a 10th of an inch of rain. but some very chilly temperatures moving in on sunday and monday with highs only topping out in the low 50's. it is cold. thank you, lawrence. now to the east bay. a substitute teacher has been fired for throwing a student to the ground at richmond high school. it was caught on video.

>> this happened monday. the substitute and student appear to have some kind of argument. the student pushes into the substitute a few times and then the sub takes him to the ground. the student gets up and is then tossed out into the hall by that substitute teacher in a statement sent to crown for the west contra costa unified school district says in part, quote, the student is safe with their family and our school and district are fully investigating the incident. the district has taken swift action and the staff member was released from employment with the school district. the district says the richmond police department. he's also looking into this incident. the san francisco police department is asking for the public's help finding a man who was caught on video assaulting an elderly asian man. >> the video you are watching here was shared by the sfpd. it shows the suspect came up from behind the victims, striking him, knocking him down to the ground. this attack happened just after 7.30, in the morning on january, 8th near natoma street and new montgomery

after the attack, the victim was unable to stand up on his own. an employee at a nearby building helped him out. got him to his feet. and the man was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. anyone with information about the man seen in this video. he's being asked to contact the sfpd. police say helped reunite a french bulldog with his family after it was separated from them for more than a year livermore. police posted this photo of the happy owner and the frenchie named money livermore. police say that they found the dog in a car that was reported for rep, reckless driving. police tracked down the car. the driver ran off, but the officers found the little french inside the dog was chipped. fortunately, so animal shelter workers in dublin found its family in san diego. >> so don't drive like a madman when you've stolen french in your car. still ahead u.s., secret service releases a new report detailing how mass attacks ross the country could have

correspondent eytan wallace spoke with the gop legislators. >> and gives us a look at what they hope will become law. >> well, republican senators here at the state capitol knowledge, they are in the minority, but they believe their bills, if signed, can make a difference across california committed to fixing this state. that's the commitment senate republicans vow today as they spoke on legislation they believe will address some of the top issues. >> facing california estate now reeling from 3 mass shootings in less than a week. this is about making sure that none of these happen again, jenna. when is the chair of the senate minority caucus, she responded to these remarks in the governor as he addressed the shootings. the one common denominator, these guns. i think this focus also nice include mental health. a lot of folks don't realize is that the asian american community. hasn't been helped. hasn't been given the opportunity to have. >> conversation on mental health. it's something that we don't discuss and we don't talk about and in our culture and we need to make sure that

we help everybody. >> it comes as the governor remains steadfast in his commitment to gun control. gun safety works. we will not back away from that result. there's a lot of gun laws in california and they're frankly ineffective because we want to force senator kelli cr do says the state has not lived up to enforcement of red flag laws to keep guns away from people deemed a danger to themselves or others. there's no way to check to see if they're carrying weapons or anything. and there's no deterrent beyond that. as for other issues, homelessness is spiraling out of control. >> public safety is anything but that the cost of living in this state is too high cost of living the senators argue can improve if the legislature backs a gop support a bill. >> to cap and temporarily suspend the gas tax that they say will help struggling californians. everybody's heard e. >> the team and go to grocery store. find a's at a reasonable cost. >> water storage. republicans are introducing a bill to streamline construction for
