tracker where we stand right now. an east wind, it's favoring more now which actually brings a little bit of moisture across from the delta. it's a coming in from the sacramento valley where they have a lot of rain along with us. 53, 11 o'clock by to work. 57, but some locations around the bay will top off in the lower 60's today. well, more on your forecast coming up in a bit. reyna harvey has a look at traffic right now. all right. well, we've got a pretty busy morning if you are going to be taken bar today. >> we have a closure at the lafayette station because of a medical emergency. so now they are expecting major delays on that antioch line. if you're going to be taken that again, trains not stopping at the lafayette bart station today traveling into the city. let's look at those drive times. 22 minute may's to that fremont street exit. don't see any accident along our bridges, but do some reports of some high winds across our san mateo bridge. 28 to 101. it's nearly 30 a richmond center fell bridge about 15 minutes tolls to want to as you travel out of richmond and the golden

gate bridge about 40 minutes. 37 to the tolls. daria, james, back to you. thank you. reyna 8 o'clock. and let's get back to the breaking news. our team coverage of the mass shooting in half moon bay. 7 people were killed. >> and one person is in critical condition right now. authorities say that the man opened fire at 2 separate agricultural facilities. san mateo county deputies identified. >> that suspected gunman as the 67 year-old half moon bay resident. his name is john li zhao. he was arrested about 2 hours after those shootings unfolded at 2 separate locations. now let's take a look at the map. it shows you where the 2 shootings happened as well as >> where he was arrested about 2 hours after those shootings. and we've got our team coverage starting with kron four's will tran live in half moon bay to talk about what we know about the crimes and how they will. >> well, we're still trying to find out a motive behind this. but i can tell you this crime scene, even though they believe he acted alone is still preserved. you can see

more sheriff's deputies are arriving to the scene here. this is crime scene. number one, they're not allowing in the buddy to go through here unless you are an investigator because they want to go through here. not that the sun is up to look for any other possible piece of evidence. meanwhile, he sits in jail this morning waking up this morning. everybody is talking about him in half moon bay before yesterday. only his co-workers knew about him, james and area. now the nation knows his name picture right there on your screen. 67 years old, charnley zao. they say that he actually shot and killed his co-workers at around 2.20 yesterday afternoon. did not tip his hand. he comes to crime scene number one, according to investigators comes here, shoots 5 people all together for them die. one of them rest of the hospital with life-threatening injuries. and then. before police officers

can even come here to try to arrest him before they even knew what happened. he drives to see number 2, only about a mile and a half and this location. so it probably took him maybe less than 5 minutes to get to see. number 2, according to investigators, that's when he shot again. 3 people at crime scene number 2, making it a total of 7 people who were killed on these this rampage conducted by this suspected gunman. got a chance to talk to people in half moon bay, a small town, a population of 12,000 people. many people were told to stay indoors. lock themselves in while they do this manhunt. here's their reaction to the rampage in their city. >> he was i mean, i would have never thought something like this would happen in a small, close >> community. we're all very close. we all know each other. we know our neighbors. we know that people who work within

our community, it was. yeah, it was heartbreaking. >> you heard us say they know a lot of people in half moon bay. it's a very small community. let's face it. the only reason why you would go here. >> predominantly is because you live here or if they have that half moon bay pumpkin festival, which is world famous. but now nobody's obviously talking about that festival of the good times. they're talking about the tragedy, according to authorities, joe shot many of his victims inside their trailers. and we will step out of the way right now. not a she's not exactly sure if those are the trailers that they're talking about. but you can call literally see james and area that the gate is closed. we see one of the doors actually open to the trailers and then they also said that he shot some of his victims in the field. these victims, our farm workers, most of them are chinese and they were here with their

families. according to authorities, just to make this situation even more more just gut wrenching. they say a lot of kids are here with their family members and they witnessed the massacre and a lot of them got get this guys while they were trying to do the manhunt while they were trying to find out exactly what happened. wrap their minds around just the horror of all this. some of the authorities are trying to play soccer with the kids. just the console that. >> and they're going to need a lot of help. and we will bring and let's continue our coverage now. we want to know more about the shooter about when he'll be charged and where he is now on how they caught yes, so let's get that side of the story. crawford's michael thomas standing by live at the police substation. michael. >> yeah, really tough morning you know, the da's office says the charges will not be filed today. they'll be filed tomorrow wednesday. that's when the suspect will appear in court for the first time over at the hall of justice in

redwood city around one, he'll have an arraignment felony charges. now let's go ahead and get into some visuals of the suspect that we're talking about. 67 year-old chumley is now. officials say that, you know, he was a half moon bay resident. he is believed to have been employed at one of the 2 agricultural farms. he was arrested yesterday at around 4 in the afternoon. let's get into some video of that arrest that we have. police were searching for a maroon suv at the time. it was spotted at the sheriff's substation with the suspects sitting inside. officials made that arrest without any incident. but still a dramatic arrest soon after police received a semiautomatic handgun from the suv, which is believed to be the one used in the shooting just down the road that sheriff's office says they do believe that time does have a spouse in the area. but it's still confirming spoke with one woman who was just feet away from the arrest. here's what she had to say. >> i was taking a walk around the building in. >> marked police car come up

the other show the parking lot and he stopped and got out of his car and i want to go back, get in my car, which is right next to this suv. and it is the surprise me to see the officer de ski mean pretty quietly to get back from a car. and i skated back a little bit. many asked me to get further back in for the >> now, when it comes to any type of a motive, officials say that's still under investigation. nothing has been released. but i just spoke with the city manager of half moon bay who says that all the residents have been placed into a hotel for this time being. he says that a lot of people did drop off things for them last night and that today they're really just looking for more financial help. he says everybody was affected by this will not be able to go back into those farms to work and you'll hear more from in the next half hour. but also you guys live in the studio. >> michael, thank you. we want to take a look and share with

us. well, what the president said president biden said this morning chill and i are praying for those killed and injured in the latest tragic shooting in half moon bay, california. for the second time in recent days, california communities are mourning the loss of loved ones in a senseless act of gun violence. i have directed my administration to ensure local authorities and the broader half moon bay community have the full support of the federal government. >> and we've also heard from governor gavin newsom who tweeted yesterday evening reacting to the shooting that he was actually at a hospital near la meeting with victims of the mass shooting there in monterey park when he was pulled aside and told about what was happening. it happened pay. he referred to the shootings has just one tragedy upon another tragedy. the governor says that he will be visiting half moon bay today. the tech details of that visit. still unclear. we're waiting for the governor's office to announce those plans. >> we also spoke with the mayor of half moon bay, deborah penrose about what happened and what the city is

doing. moving forward. here's some of what she had to say. >> i think the city is on top as much as you can be in a situation like this. we don't have all of the information yet. we are pleased that the shooter has been apprehended and apprehended without difficulty by our sheriff's office. thank god for that what we need to be looking at is why did this happen? and that's not easy easy question to answer. but i can tell you this. we don't have the money for mental health care. in our community or anywhere in the united states of america. and we have too many guns. >> the mayor says she's working to support the farm workers who are affected by this, along with their families and particularly the children who witnessed the shootings. >> simply too many guns in this country. and there has to

be a change. this is not an acceptable way for modern to to live its conduct its affairs. this is something they are. we get to watch on the news. never think based hit home. >> and there you hear from the local leaders on the peninsula expressing their sadness and anger and shock over what happened in half moon bay. many calling for a change to the country's gun laws. county supervisors are also encouraging those who have been impacted by yesterday's shooting to seek help. if they need it. >> please take advantage of the mental health crisis counseling that is available out there. the amount of stress is spent on this community for weeks is really quite high. there's people out there who are suffering from this who are feeling the effects of it. please reach out and get help. you're not alone. >> and to that end, santa clara county has again reminding or is reminding everybody about the 24 hour crisis hotline. you see the 2

numbers on your screen. 650-579-0350, and the toll free. number 1, 802, 7, 3. talk. those 2 numbers. we'll connect you with resources to help you get through this difficult time. and there was another mass shooting in the bay area. oakland it's just lucky that that there weren't. >> mass deaths in this one, but one person was killed and 7 others were injured. when somebody opened fire around 6 o'clock last night at this valero gas station on macarthur boulevard as seminary avenue officers responded after they got a gun shots detected on the shot spotter system. and this is video from the citizen app. they came they roped off with crime scene tape and started investigating. they found several shell casings but no victims soon after, however, there are multiple victims turned up at several nearby hospitals with gunshot wounds. again, 7 or injured. one person died. we know that the surviving victims appear to be all in stable condition. it's 8.11 and we'll be right back.

we're 14 is the time and developing news. the mass shooting in half moon bay. >> as we know, comes on the heels of that other mass shooting that happened over the weekend in southern california. investigators down in monterey park are still searching for a motive behind saturday night shooting that killed 11 people and wounded 9 others. it's being called the worst mass shooting in la county's history. at this

point, investigators revealed that the gunman may have been manufacturing gun silencers inside of his home. he's been identified as 72 year-old who can tran investigators believe that he fired 42 rounds into the star ballroom dance studio and then tried to enter a different dance hall. but the gunman was disarmed by an employee there. someone who police now are calling a hero. >> i just those people that affected, most believe that this incident also cover. >> safely. >> and after the gunman left that second dance hall, investigators say he turned the gun on himself while he was in his van after a standoff with police. >> 15 is the time and want to switch gears now from the news and take a break talk about the weather because it is going to be another nice day around the bay, sunny. and it's already starting off. beautiful out there. we get dave spahr in the weather center with our fantastic forecast for today. dave. yeah, james and darya. good morning. good morning, everybody. a pretty pleasant day and it looks like all week

long. we're going to see more of this may be just painted with some high cloudiness. one of the issues, of course, as you start your day cold and it's much colder today in some spots, particularly the east bay. then it was yesterday, same kind of atmosphere working here. but it's the issue of the winds that shows you how much they can be your friend at night. keeping those temperatures supported and even at this hour, 37 concord, 36 for livermore, livermore valley that cold air gets settled out there. you know how much air to kind of mix things up a bit. 42, though, antioch and still 34 up to santa rosa forecast. the highs are looking for the 60's today at least lower 60's. 52. meanwhile, for san francisco, there they are. the winds shifting a little bit more to the east. that brings a little bit of moisture in from the sacramento valley from recent rains. but then we another swath of offshore winds coming due north. it's going to be most pronounced in solano county, but it will spill onto contra costa county through the delta. come on down to san francisco across the golden gate, going back out to see a little bit. don't know if they have any statements with this. they try to keep least about a good 24 hours or so in advance

26 minute ride down from 30, but still pretty busy there. 8 80's inland or down towards milpitas. about 54 minutes. you can see traffic building along 6.80. also if you're traveling through the maze right now, crockett down towards the maze, about 40 all of our highways pretty congested at this hour highway 4.32. minute ride antioch, into concord's to 42. and if you're hopping on 8.80, or 5.80, definitely see some delays right now. stanley intial traveling along a 80 up towards oakland about 33 minutes. another note, if you're hopping on bar today, they're not stopping at that lafayette station, a medical emergency happened there. and so now at slowing things down along the antioch line. keep that in mind. if you're taking bart darya. james, back to you. all right. thanks. a lot of tate, 18 right now and the justice department is working to protect abortion access. >> this in the wake of the supreme court's roe versus wade reversal last year. yeah.

washington correspondent jessi tenure standing by with the very latest on what so on the department's radar following the 50th anniversary of that roe decision. >> good morning. top doj officials made it clear there still defending abortion access from the federal to state level. >> plus is devastating for people in communities across the country. 7 months after the u.s. supreme court overturned roe v wade, the justice department said it's working tirelessly to protect access to reproductive care. we do not have different rules for democrats or republicans. different rules for the powerful and the powerless monday. attorney general merrick garland said the department's reproductive rights task force has been advising federal agencies along with monitoring state laws and filing lawsuits in some cases, associate attorney general vanita gupta said pills are the new abortion battleground, committed to doing everything we can to protect, continued lawful access to abortion medication and other reproductive health services. the fda is making

attorney general merrick garland says the case and the other involving former president donald trump are both being handled objective. >> are all the justice department to supply the facts and the law in each case, reach procreate decisions and partisan and neutral way without regard to the subjects are. that is what we've done. it each of these cases as well. we'll continue to do. >> garland has appointed a special counsel to investigate each of those cases. >> new democratic governor left open the possibility of continuing her republican predecessors policy of busing migrants north katie hobbs said that her office is currently making sure the relocation is cost effective and safe. this policy began last under former governor. doug ducey's administration on like the fellow republican governor ron desantis and greg abbott ducey coordinated drop-offs with local jurisdictions and the migrants were told of their final destination before they

boarded. still many advocacy groups c for the policy called it a political stunt. >> well, the golden gate bridge is getting a major and much-needed safety upgrade. mayor london breed was joined yesterday by nancy pelosi and transportation secretary pete buttigieg to announce the millions of dollars of federal money that's now coming to help fix the bridge. 400 million dollars. as a matter of fact, to retrofit the towers and improve the foundations and beams. the golden gate bridge is 90 years old after all in following the loma prieta earthquake, it was decided decades ago, actually the bridge needed some safety upgrades. secretary buttigieg says this is all part of a larger effort now to improve the country's aging infrastructure. >> whether it's a road threatened by mudslides, support threatened by sea-level rise or a major american bridge threatened by earthquakes. we are acting to ensure that it's more resilient in the face of all that will come our way in the century. >> yeah, the golden gate bridge is just one of 4 bridges in the country to

heller neighborhood, which is southeast of downtown redwood city at the time that she was seen. she was last seen wearing a room wearing a dark hoodie when and she had a red and black pants on. police are asking if you see her to give them a call, they're concerned. >> the man accused of opening fire in an el paso walmart killing. 23 people back in 2019 is expected to plead guilty. a federal hate crime charges. and in return, prosecutors say they won't seek the death penalty in the case against patrick chris. yes, now crusius originally pleaded not guilty to 90 counts under federal hate crime and firearms laws. police say he confessed to authorities that he was targeting mexicans when he drove 10 hours from allen, texas to el paso to carry out that mass shooting. on monday, a judge set a new arraignment hearing for february 8. >> the man who was had his feet propped up on then

speaker of the house nancy pelosi's desk during the january 6 riots has been convicted on all 8 charges, including 4 felonies. richard barnett could face up to 20 years in prison for his most serious conviction of obstruction of congress. barnett also took an envelope from pelosi's desk. the 62 year-old was also convicted on weapons charges. prosecutors say that barnette entered the capitol with a walking stick that was equipped with a stun gun. his sentencing is set for may 3rd. he says he will appeal. >> we will take a break at a 27 but coming up next on the kron 4 morning news. we're continuing our coverage of the deadly mass shooting in half moon bay. what police know so far about that shooting and the alleged gunman. we'll be right back.

30's in concord livermore. 36 santa rosa still behind a 34 with 40's across most of the bay for right now, although still chilly 39 to san jose. these are spots we're expecting to see pop above 60 for afternoon highs. temperature contrast to see how we're trailing in some pockets here. that's due to losing the winds which kept temperatures artificially high yesterday morning, although felt that way. a wind shift a little bit to the east overnight and this morning, technically bringing us a little moisture coming in from the central valley. they're going to come back again from the north with another spurt of those offshore winds. fortunately, well insulated. so no fire concerns that relatively speaking. 55 at noon at 3 were 57 approaching about 60 or so in some locations will have that in the 4 zone forecast. the rain is standing by to check out what's going on with traffic. and we've been tracking a busy morning commute across a lot of our highways. so >> about 56 minutes along 8.80, silly answer down feet is if you're traveling to the maze 5.80, or 80 right now,

locations. >> well where the tragedies unfolded. the shootings were at 2 locations and then the 3rd area. that's where he was arrested. as james said, a couple hours after those shots were fired. let's start at the first crime scene. kron four's will tran is live at half moon bay monitoring that and what is happening there today will. >> james darya, this is crime scene. number one, they believe that the gunman acted alone and that there is not a threat to the community. nonetheless, they are preserving this scene here and they are waiting for more investigators to arrive. this is crime scene. number one. you can see police here. nobody is allowed beyond their little roadblock here because they want to come back and look through this area for possible more evidence as they try to build the case against this man. let's show you his picture once again, half moon bay resident chanley zao

before yesterday, other than his co-workers and some people as family members. nobody knew about him. now he's the latest suspected gunman in a mass shooting in the country. they say he came to crime scene number one at around 2.22, these are nurseries. they came to this particular location without tipping his hand whatsoever. there was no notification. that's something horrific was about to happen. according to investigators, he comes here, opens fire on 5 people. 4 people died. one person in the hospital this morning, life-threatening conditions before they could even possibly respond. james and area. he gets into his car, according to investigators, he goes to crime scene. number 2 did not take very long. it's only about a mile and a half from crime scene. number one goes into that location and authorities say that's when he opened fire on 3 people making it a total of 7 people killed

altogether. we've got a chance to talk to lawmakers. obviously they are shocked by what happened in this small community of only 12,000 people. and this morning they're talking about heartbreak. they're talking about gun control. talking about mental health. >> in the days and weeks ahead of us, we really have to come together and figure out how to go ahead and wrap our arms around getting to address this problem. gun violence which is afflicted our state here region's recent days. and as a flick to this here at home, it's it's something that's unimaginable that happen here in half moon bay. and frankly, here in san mateo county. >> ok, james duryea, they say that this man shot and killed his co-workers. if we can head back out live right now. want to show you exactly what's going on. they believe that he got to this scene here and then opened fire on many of his victims inside their trailers, which is right next to the fields. these are farm

workers. so he according to them, shoots several people inside their trailers. and he also shoots many of them in the fields and then being farm workers. their families were here. and according to authorities, many kids are at the location or locations when they saw their family members being gunned down. >> traumatic for them to be sure. thank you very and as far as those kids know, they're going to need counseling and help in the san mateo county sheriff says that they are going to try to support those children because they know that they witnessed something horrible. >> it's a big rule so people are working. it spread out. there's people that live at the location as well. you know, it. it was in the afternoon when kids are out of school and for children to witnesses is unspeakable.

we think of him arriving in his tesla at the federal courthouse garage in san francisco yesterday. the trial stems from a tweet that he made back in 2018 in which he claimed to have had the financing secured to purchase tesla make it private at $420. a share. well, that deal didn't happen. and that resulted in a 40 million dollars settlement with federal regulators. a 9 person jury is now responsible for deciding whether those tweets damaged those tesla shareholders. >> we'll be right back. time now is a 40 watt.

>> age 55. and we want to recap what we know about the breaking news that we're following, which is the shooting that happened at half moon bay. 7 people are dead. one person is in critical condition and the shooter was arrested and there's a photo of the man that police arrested. he's identified as 67 in half moon bay resident should unleash all. >> and at this he was arrested at a santo county sheriff's office substation in downtown half moon bay, roughly 2 hours or so after the shooting began, deputies say the weapon used was a handgun. deputies are able to recover that weapon from the suspect's vehicle. there were 2 shooting scenes that we know of that shooting. first one was at a mushroom farm on highway 92 were for farm workers were killed at that location at about 2.20, or so yesterday
