>> this is horrific event, one that we would never imagine where the current san mateo county. gun violence in this country. on acceptable levels. it's really hit home tonight. >> half moon bay is mourning the deaths of 7 people killed in california. second mass shooting in 48 hours. while investigators piece together what happened. lawmakers now calling for stricter gun laws. kron. 4 morning news has live team coverage of the tragedy. >> from the bay area's local news station. you're watching the kron. 4 morning news at 6. >> thanks for joining us. at 6 o'clock on a tuesday morning. i'm sorry and i'm james will get to that live team coverage here at of half moon bay in just a moment. before we do, though, we do want to get you updated on weather and traffic in case you have to leave here in short order. it's dry outside a little cold, though. yeah, it's chilly out there, dave. we'll see the sun again.

a lot of that. yeah. good morning, james and ari, good morning, everybody. we're going to have that all week long. temperatures will be going to be that exciting. but at least we get a lot of sunshine with all of this going on. >> we have that dry air mass still with us. and without the winds, temperatures have been doing a little tumble at there's downtown san francisco for you. but check it out. still this hour in the 30's in most of the east bay, except along the east bay shoreline. 36, even fremont santa rosa dipped into the 33. we're going make up for it this afternoon. 38 meanwhile for san jose. but the peninsula holding on to some 50's, you'll notice the contrast tells the tale how much cooler it is this morning compared to yesterday, a little bit. also up in the north bay to but less so as you head to san francisco in half moon bay, the winds a little bit of an offshore wind has shifted more easterly. that's brought a little bit of moisture into the atmosphere contrasted with yesterday. but the breakdown for you today, keeping the sunshine 48 to 10 by one at upper 50's near about 60. we'll see some of those up in the north bay morning forecast and that rain is checking in traffic reyna. all right. well, if you're hitting the

roads this morning or your travel into the city, it's going to take about 12 minutes. our highways are still pretty light moving at the limit, but the meteor lights are on here. so that's what's slowing us down. >> 12 minutes heading across towards the peninsula. a 80 to 101 via the san mateo bridge. a richmond center fell bridge. put you at about 7 minutes tolls to 101. there. and if you're taking the golden gate bridge, 37 to the tolls is going o take about 90 minutes. darya. james, back to you. thanks a lot. rain is 602. and back to the breaking news. what we know about the mass shooting in half moon bay, 7 people were killed. >> and one person is in critical condition after a man opened fire at 2 separate locations. now, as we know, san mateo county deputies have identified the suspected gunman, a 67 year-old half moon bay resident ron lee zhao. >> he was arrested about 2 hours after the shootings unfolded. the map that you're looking at now, let's take a look at that. it shows the 3 locations in total where this happened. >> 2 of those places are crime scenes. and then the 3rd. that's where the arrest happened. kron four's will tran is live in half moon bay

with an update on what we know this morning will. >> james darya, i'm at crime scene. number one, we are 15 hours after the massacre and you can see there are deputies still at the scene. they are preserving it just to make sure that the public does not get in because they want to comb through this area looking for possibly another weapon. this shooting took place down a long driveway. so they're stopping us here. we are filled with lots of authorities and national media here for another mass shooting. everybody in half moon bay talking about it, of course, because it rocks their quiet community. here's a picture once again of the person who they have in custody this morning. chen lee's out, they believe that he shot and killed his co workers. this all went down at around 2.22. yesterday afternoon without any notice at all. according to

authorities, he comes to the first scene and we're talking to nurseries comes into the first scene. and here's video of it. he shoots 5 people at the scene. 4 people died. one person, as you mentioned, still in the hospital with life-threatening injuries. we do know that from this particular scene here he goes according to authorities to a second scene about a mile and a half from this location goes there and shoots 3 more people making it a total of 7 fatalities. this community here, guys in people don't know half moon bay. it is a very quiet community next to the coast. but famous for their annual half moon pumpkin festival. but nobody's talking about that. they are talking about what this man did to their community. >> he was i mean, i would have never thought something like this would happen in a small, close community. we're all very close. we all know each other. we know our neighbors.

we know that people who work within our community, it was. yeah, it was heartbreaking. >> okay. so let's talk about the 2 scenes chains and area according to authorities. once he got to the scene, they do say that he shot many of his victims inside their trailers next to the field. and the trailers are where they live. we're talking about the victims being farm workers. and then according to authorities, he also shoots and kills some people in the fields. and again, just to make matters worse and more horrific. these are farm workers and apparently they have their families on site and they believe that many kids witnessed the massacre. >> back to thank you so much for that update, though. well. >> all right. let's continue our team coverage out of half moon bay. what we know about the gunman so far, we know he was arrested about 2 hours after the shooting. all right. let's go to kron four's michael thomas with more

explanation on this dramatic arrest. michael. >> yeah, hi, everyone. a tough morning for people here. you know, when it comes to the suspect, we're still getting details that are rolling in. but we do know that he was a resident here in half moon bay the parking lot behind me here at the sheriff's substation is where he was arrested. i want to point out just about a 4 minute drive from that second shooting location. let's get you a visual of the suspects in custody. again. he is 67 chumley. zao officials do believe that he was employed at one of the 2 agricultural farms. he was arrested yesterday around 4 in the afternoon. and we have some video for you to look at of that arrest. police were searching for a maroon suv which was spotted here at the sheriff's substation with suspect sitting inside of it. now, officials made that arrest without any incident, but still a dramatic arrest. you can see that 2 officers were in plain clothes and even you know, but they did pull out their guns and soon after police retrieved a semiautomatic handgun from

that suv that he was sitting in, which is believed to be the one used in the shooting sheriff's office says when it comes to family of the shooter. well, they say that so does does have a spouse in the area that hasn't pointing us to who we spoke with. one woman who was just feet away from that she had to say >> i was taking a walk around the building in marked police car come up the other show the parking lot and he stopped and got out of his car and i want to go back, get in my car, which is right next to this suv. >> and it surprise me to see the officer asking me pretty quietly to get back from a car. and i skated back a little bit. many asked me to get further back and further back. when it comes to that million dollar question of why and a motive has not been yet released. officials are still investigating as we get more

information regarding the suspect and those victims will continue to keep you updated. live this morning in half moon bay, michael thomas kron. 4 news. i'll send it back to you guys left the studio in san francisco. michael, thank you very much. and also president biden just release a statement this morning about the tragedy and says in part, quote, jill and i are praying for those. >> killed and injured in the latest tragic shooting in half moon bay for the second time in recent days, california communities are mourning the loss of loved ones in a senseless act of gun violence. i have directed my administration to ensure local authorities and the broader half moon bay community have the full support of the federal government. >> we've also heard from governor gavin newsom as well. he tweeted monday evening reacting to the shooting saying that he was actually at a hospital down in l a meeting with victims of the mass shooting in monterey park when he was pulled aside and briefed about what was going on and half moon bay. he referred to the shootings as tragedies upon tragedies.

governor newsom says that he will be visiting half moon bay today and we'll have more details on that visit as soon as the governor's office announces his plans. >> and we spoke with half moon bay's mayor debra penrose about what the city is doing following the shooting and how they're dealing with it. and here's what some of she had to say. >> i think the city is on top as much as you can be in a situation like this. we don't have all of the information yet. we are pleased that the shooter has been apprehended and apprehended without difficulty by our sheriff's office. thank god for that what we need to be looking at is why did this happen? and that's not easy easy question to answer. but i can tell you this. we don't have the money for mental health care. in our community or anywhere in the united states of america. and

we have too many guns. >> and the mayor says she's working to support the farm workers were affected along with the children, especially those who witnessed the shooting. >> simply too many guns in this country. and there has to be a change. this is not an acceptable way for modern to to give its conduct its affairs. this is something they are. we get to watch on the news. never think based on hit on. >> local leaders on the peninsula expressing their sadness and anger over what happened in half moon bay. many calling for change in the country's gun laws. county supervisors are encouraging those who have been affected by yesterday's shooting to seek help. if they need it. >> please take advantage of the mental health crisis counseling that is available out there. the amount of stress is spent on this community for weeks is really quite high. there's people out there who are suffering from

this who are feeling the effects of it. please reach out and get help. you're not alone. >> well, if you are in need of help, one place to start is the san mateo county hotline. we put the number on your screen. it's 6, 5, 0, 5, 7, 9, 0, 3, 5, 0, and there's that second number on your screen as well. 1, 802, 7, 3 talk. that's 1, 802, 7, 3, 8, 2, 5, 5, >> there was another shooting that happened yesterday and was in oakland. that's the breaking news that we're dealing from overnight as well. a mass shooting. one person was killed, 7 others were injured when the bullets flew around 6 o'clock last night. this valero station on macarthur boulevard seminary avenue, which is right near mills college officers got there. they got there because the shot spotter detector went off. so they responded and this is video from the citizen app when they got there. there were several shell casings at the scene, but they didn't find and the victims. but soon after that, multiple victims arrived at several nearby hospitals with gunshot wounds.

>> we're back at 6.14, and the mass shooting at half. moon bay comes on the heels of that mass shooting we saw over the weekend in southern california. investigators in monterey park are searching for a motive right now in saturday night shooting that killed 11 people and wounded 9 others. again, they're calling this the worst mass shooting in los angeles county history. investigators revealing that the gunman may have been manufacturing gun. silencers at his home. he was identified as 72 year-old who can tran investigators believe that he fired 42 rounds at the star ballroom dance studio and then tried to enter a different dance hall. but they say the gunman was disarmed by an employee. there. authorities are calling an employee a hero. >> i just those people that did most believe that this incident also cover. >> safely. >> yeah. after the gunman left the second dance hall, investigators say he fatally shot himself while in his van after a standoff with police.

bit across the bay towards a san francisco. you'll notice all of that offshore direction. so will be resurgence of some drier air back down here towards the bay. we're mostly sunny for today and cool highs around 60 well inland. a few scattered clouds cool to cold at night because we'll still be dipping well into the business of the 30 still and many days with this dry air on saturday. call it with some scattered clouds. and then for sunday, maybe a shower working in here, not total agreement on the models that that's all going to come together. 59 for san francisco while 62 san jose and that's after the morning lows. well in the 30's. so it's a nice recovery. 61 for oakland over the water, geography. those numbers really popping up there north and santa rosa at 66 projections are 59. meanwhile, for san francisco next couple of days, let's keep some of those lower 60's working here in the next few days. again, noting some winds wednesday, thursday check and area traffic out rain. what's going on now of our highways along the peninsula in the south bay. >> moving pretty nice and light here. you can see 2.80, moving up the limit along with

merrick garland says the case and the other involving former president donald trump are being handled objective lee. >> are all the justice department supply the facts and the law in each case, reach procreate decisions, the non-partisan and neutral way without regard the subjects are. that is what we've done. each of these cases. that's what we'll continue to do. >> garland has appointed a special counsel to investigate each of those cases. >> 6.19, is a time in arizona's new democratic governor left open the possibility of continuing her republican predecessors, policy of busing migrants north katie hobbs said that her office is currently making sure that the relocation is cost effective and safe for the migrants. this policy started last year under former governor doug ducey's adminispration. but like fellow republican governor ron desantis and greg abbott. he

powerful and the powerless monday. attorney general merrick garland said the department's reproductive rights task force has been advising federal agencies along with monitoring state laws and filing lawsuits in some cases, associate attorney general vanita gupta said pills are the new abortion battleground, committed to doing everything we can to protect, continued lawful access to abortion medication and other reproductive health services. the fda is making abortion pills more widely available at pharmacies and through the mail. patients can also get them through an in-person or virtual appointment. but abortion opponents are suing to block the drugs. we are fighting back. vice president kamala harris marks the 50th anniversary of roe sunday by announcing a new white house memorandum to protect legal access to medication abortion, make sure that doctors can legally prescribed that pharmacies can dispense and that women can secure safe and effective medication.

night in the baugh heller neighborhood, which is in southeast of downtown redwood city. they do say that she was wearing a dark hoodie, red and black bottoms. if you've any idea where she is or have seen her, please call police. also the news, the man accused of opening fire in an el paso walmart killing 23 people back in 2019 is expected to plead guilty of federal hate crime charges. prosecutors say they won't seek the death penalty in the case against patrick crusius. now crusius originally pleaded not guilty to 90 counts under federal hate crime and firearms laws. police say that crusius confessed to authorities that he was targeting mexicans when he drove 10 hours from allen, texas to el paso to carry out the shooting. on monday, a judge set a new arraignment hearing for preparatory 8th. >> time now 6.25. the man who propped his feet on then speaker nancy pelosi's desk during the january 6 riot has been convicted on all 8 charges, including 4 felonies.

richard barnett could face now up to 20 years in prison for his most serious conviction of obstruction of justice. barnett also took an envelope from pelosi's desk. the 62 year-old was convicted on weapons charges. prosecutors say they enter the capitol with a walking stick, which was equipped with a stun gun. his sentencing is set for may 3rd barnett says he will appeal the conviction. it's 6.26. and coming up next on the kron, 4 morning news. we're going to continue our coverage of the deadly mass shooting in half moon bay. we'll tell you what police know so far about the shooting. >> and the gunman. francisco. there's your contrast by some double digits in some cases, again, due to this dry air. still with us. winds currently have shifted a little to the east. it does bring in some slight moisture secondhand from all the rain. we had our friends in the central valley in sacramento valley got it as well. so we're getting some of that brought into the air. the breakdown keep the sun coming here. we've got 48 by 10 by one. we're at 57 now. some spots will see some 60's going on. will get into some of that coming up in a bit. right now, rain has a look at bay area traffic right but our bridges are looking, i mean, not terribly bad, but our traffic has been building at the bay bridge because the meteor lights are on. >> 18 minutes traveling into the city right now, maze to that fremont street exit. if you are taking bart, they have a closure at that lafayette station looks like a medical emergency is happening there. so a bart station closure at the lafayette station because of some sort of medical emergency right now, the only station that i'm seeing right now that is impacted our san mateo bridge 80 to 1, 0, one,

14 minute as you're traveling across towards the peninsula, a richmond center fell bridge 9 minutes tolls to 101. there. and if you're hopping on the golden gate bridge, 37 to the tolls. it's going to take about 20 minutes darya. james, back to you. thank you. at 6.30, right now and we want to get back to the mass shooting coverage. we've got team coverage this morning. what happened in half moon bay, 7 people were killed. >> and one person injured in critical condition right now. they say a man opened fire at 2 separate agricultural facilities, santo county deputies have identified that suspected gunman as a 67 year-old. >> half moon bay resident from the he was arrested about 2 hours or so after those shootings unfolded. take a look at this map and it shows you the 3 locations involved in what happened yesterday. 2 or crime scenes and the 3rd location is where the suspect was arrested. problems will tran is live in half moon bay with everything we know up to this hour. well.

>> what james darya i'm at crime scene number one. and you can see officers over my left shoulder. we're talking 16 hours after the rampage and this area still lockdown as they want to preserve it, just to make sure that the public does not get insight. this location. this is where the nursery is, where it all went down at around 2.22. yesterday afternoon. they want to preserve it because they will continue to send investigators to this location. looking for possible more weapons involved. we do know that they believe that there is not a threat to the community that this particular man here and let me pull up his picture for you, james, you talked about a 67 years old. his name is charlie zao. they believe that he shot and killed his co workers did not tip his hand. he just came to the location and started firing. let's talk about seen number one. this is a nursery, a mushroom farm.

they say he went here and shot 5 people. 4 people died. one person still in the hospital with life-threatening injuries. they believe that he shot some of the victims in their trailers next to the field and they live in the trailers as they are farm workers. and then he also shot some people in the field. but it did not stop here. he gets into his car, goes to see number 2 did not have to drive very far, guys. it was about a mile and a half from this location goes to that location and opens fire on 3 people. 3 people died making it a total of 7 fatalities altogether. we've got a chance to talk to residents in half moon bay. this is a very quiet community world famous for the pumpkin festival that they do every year. the largest pumpkin and people come from all over the country just to get their pumpkins weight. instead this morning, this area is famous now for being the nation's latest mass shooting.

to kron four's michael thomas. he has that part of the story. michael. >> yeah, hi, everyone. really a tough we did just get some new details from the da's office when it comes to the suspect. will not be charges will not be filed today, but rather tomorrow. and he's also expected to appear in court tomorrow for a felony arraignment at around one 30. now that will take place over the and read what what we know about him so far is that he was a resident here in the area. but we're not getting too too many details. and let's get you another visual of what he looks like again, again, is the 67 year-old and his name is sean lee. zao officials do believe he was employed at one of the 2 agricultural farms. he was arrested yesterday around 4 in the afternoon and we have some video to show you of that arrest because we were here for a press conference police were searching the area for a maroon suv which happened to be spotted right here at the sheriff's substation with the suspect simply sitting inside.

officials made that arrest without any incident, but still a traumatic arrest. you can also see that the 2 officers who made the arrest initially were in but they did have guns drawn soon after police retrieved a semiautomatic handgun from the suv, which is believed to be the one used in the shooting. now the sheriff's office says when it comes to family members they do believe that he has a spouse in the area. we spoke with one woman who was just feet away when it all happened to >> it's shocking and i was glad that it happened without incident and was very impressed with the way officers handled take down. >> now the million dollar question of why we have no idea at this moment when it comes to motive. officials have not yet released anything. but again, he is set to appear at some point in court tomorrow around one 30. and of course, we'll keep you updated with all of those details as we get more information. send it back to live this morning in the studio.

>> thank you very much, michael. and as will said, we also learned that some children witnessed the shootings. the san mateo county sheriff says >> that at the time this happened, the children were out of school. so it was inevitable that they were going to be, you know, viewing this because they were present. let's listen to what they say. >> it's a big rule so people are working. it spread out. there's people that live at the location as well. you know, it. it was in the afternoon when kids are out of school and for children to witnesses is unspeakable. >> well, we spoke to state assembly member mark berman about the impact that the shooting is having on those who live in the area where the shooting took place and he shared his concerns about their mental health. >> this is farmworker housing, right where we're people, you families live on on a farm. and and, you know, members of the family work on the farm
