and 5 women and injuring 10 others. tran then took off entering another dance studio half an hour later in the town of alhambra where 2 heroes acted quickly to wrestle the weapon away because they saved lives. this could have been much worse sunday morning trend who fled the scene in a white box fan was tracked to the city of torrance 30 miles south where swat team members surrounded his car after an hours long standoff. >> police officers discovered trans body slumped over in the driver seat dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. this tragedy shocking the asian american community which makes up 65% of the moderate park population, particularly those who frequent the ballroom dance studio. so i met my wife here about 7 years ago, and we love to dance. who knows how long this will take time you know, the cover, you know, >> definitely is a big blow for a lot of the dancing

jose. many people coming out to celebrate the lunar new year on sunday saying they want people to unify regardless of their race and to try to cope with the mass shooting president of the oakland chinatown chamber caught chamber foundation. karl chan says that he i was shocked and saddened to hear of the shooting. he says mass shootings can happen anywhere at any time to anyone. >> this is not only issue within ap item need heat, especially concerning of all, you know, and the entire country when one of semester sunni. we all have to come together. >> yeah, we were told that this lunar new year celebration in san jose took 6 months to plan and no one considered canceling the event. organizers say it's important show that they are not scared. >> it's 505. and today a string service is expected to get back to normal after mudslides went on the tracks last weekend. shut it down. yeah. the recovery continuing after those storms. there will be some precautions in place

would keep us dry. but because we've had so much rain, there's moisture on the ground that will supplant that. here you have it by wednesday, overnight into wednesday morning coming in from the coast. finally that marine layer returns. now those winds right here in this pocket up here in solano county holds just about all day, although we'll call breezy through most of the bay area. but that's where we kind of on the windy side still coming in from the north. so for today, we've got sunny, breezy early cool and dry expected. and then for this week, it's few scattered clouds here. and there we go. cool days. cold night. senate tometimes will be in the lower 40's. but other times in the upper 30's as well, 30's to 60's for highs that super lucky. we'll get up to about 60 next weekend is where it's getting more money. we'll go with variable clouds for now. but the models are in disagreement on this chance of rain on sunday. more of a disappointment is a kind of falls apart on tuesday afterwards. 59 for high today, san francisco, 60 for oakland and 59. meanwhile for san jose barrier traffic right now what's happening? all right, dave, let's get you up to speed. if you are. >> traveling along 5, 18, 80

week with a new sense of urgency to raise the country's debt ceiling. treasury secretary janet yellen told lawmakers the u.s. hit. >> its borrowing limit last week forcing her now to rely on accounting maneuvers and creativity to buy them more time till they can make a does that mean shell our dc correspondent jessi turnure is live in washington with the latest. hi, jessi. >> yeah, good morning, darren james. so house republicans and president biden are still no closer to reaching a deal. and secretary yellen worries what that could mean for the american people. >> it's a very responsible thing to do. treasury secretary janet yellen warned congress against using the debt ceiling as a bargaining tool would impose a self-imposed calamity on the united states and the world economy. yellen started to buy lawmakers more time last week when the u.s. officially hit its debt limit. she is temporarily suspending payments to federal employees, retirement and health care funds which she said should

keep the government open until june. yellen reminded lawmakers this is not about new spending. this is about paying bills have already been incurred. but house republicans are demanding spending cuts in exchange for raising the debt ceiling. 31 trillion dollars created by both republicans and democrats. this is both parties falls on nbc's meet the press. south carolina congresswoman nancy mace said this is the time to have this debate. and pennsylvania congressman brian fitzpatrick told fox news sunday that it's what the american people elected them to do. so nobody should be taking the position that we're not going negotiate. but that remains the biden administration's stance. if congress does not raise the debt ceiling, the u.s. will not be able to pay for things like military salaries, social security benefits and food safety inspections on cnn state of the union, illinois democrat senator durbin warned his colleagues against any delays. we're in the very risk of a recession in this economy.

neighborhood is getting a public bathroom that looks like out of this world. it's been kind of controversial because the price tag 1.7 million dollars for this toilet in the know valley town square. i saw this in fact, this is the one that's more near us. james and the saw this. and just a toilet inside the outside looks cool. look at the inside. nothing is and anyway. i can't believe the price tag and neither can many people. governor newsom had to step in to actually put a halt on the project temporarily. and now a different toilet is being donated to the city and it could be ready by this fall. the problem, it could still cost the city close to a million dollars. so was one point whenever now it's 1 million to get this up and running a san francisco chronicle reports regardless of where the bathroom comes

to the tolls. daria gives back to you. thank you. 5.30, in developing news. the manhunt is over for the man who shot and killed 10 people and wounded 10 others at a dance studio. >> in monterey park, southern california on saturday night. shocking story over the weekend. authorities identified the gunman and now they're trying to figure out. >> why? why did he do it with carlos with the story. >> law enforcement swarmed the home of the suspected mass shooter in hammond. that's where officials conducted a search warrant sunday night after lunar new year. celebrations were tainted by tragedy. pretty much lived alone. gets you taught dance or something. >> hours earlier, authorities say the man found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside white man in torrance following an hours-long standoff is the same suspect responsible for killing 10 people the night before when officers exited their patrol vehicle. >> to contact the occupant,

they heard one gunshot. >> la county sheriff robert luna identified the alleged mass shooter as 72 year-old who can tran authorities say trend opened fire inside star ballroom dance studio in monterey park just after 10 saturday night. >> that's where 10 people were killed. 10 others injured during lunar new year gathered. but his alleged rampage wooden and their investigators say trend then went to the lie, lie ballroom in alhambra targeting more party goers. 2 bystanders disarmed the gunman preventing another mass casualty incident from happening. he was disarmed. >> by to community members who i consider to be heroes because they saved lives. this could have been much worse. the weapon that we recovered at that second scene. i'm describing as a magazine fed semi automatic assault pistol.

police say they do believe the attack was targeted. they do not say they'll help people were targeted or whether there was more than one shooter. so we'll keep you updated as we learn more. meantime, in san francisco, the gallery owner arrested for hosing down an unhoused woman outside of his business is scheduled to be reined in february. collier going owner of foster going gallery is facing charges of misdemeanor battery. if convicted, he could face up to 6 months in jail and $2000 in fines. the san francisco da's office says that he is expected to enter a plea at that arraignment. again, it's scheduled for february 17th. >> it's 5.34 new this morning. san mateo deputies have arrested a man after a car chase ended in a crash. the deputies were trying to pull over 2 men in a car yesterday morning and the car started driving northbound on middlefield rolled near redwood city when deputies caught up. they say they saw the men had crashed into another car. and then at that point were running from the scene. they found 23 year-old

jack gill sell hiding nearby. they could not find the other man. he got away. >> happening right now, oakland police are looking for a man they say was involved in an attempted rape. they say the incident happened on thursday morning at a business on international boulevard. worker told officers that a man came into the store, grab them, pull down their pants. but the worker was able to fight back and leave that store. police say the person left the scene heading towards high street. they're looking for them. still this morning. >> first responders rescued a surfer yesterday afternoon, a surfer who was swept onto a rocky shoreline just north of davenport in santa cruz county. there's the chopper cal fire santa cruz, firefighters, the coast guard and the california state park rangers were all there helping to coordinate this rescue. cal fire says strong ocean swells and high tides swept that surfer onto the rocks and then they were stranded. wow, and airlifted. as you can see this video from the coast guard helicopter helicopter hoisted

smelling fresh and clean. >> we're back at 5. 39 and in san francisco. 25 people were displaced after a fire broke out and burned through 2 buildings. this happened on hay street in the city's. neighborhood about one 45 or so sunday morning in an open neighborhood quickly grew. at least one firefighter was injured battling the blaze. they were taken to the hospital to be treated for their injuries. fire investigators are looking out what caused that fire crews are still on the scene. they say they'll be there for the next several hours. just keeping an eye out for hot spots. as for the 25 residents who were displaced, the red cross is assisting those people with finding

accommodations. >> time now is 5.39. in the south bay. a fire broke out in this apartment complex along miller avenue in san jose near biggie road and north capitol avenue. it was around 3.30, yesterday afternoon. you see the smoke coming out of that window. there. firefighters were able to put it out and nobody was hurt in the red cross is helping anybody who's been displaced by that. now. >> well, there are some new details in the computer meltdown that grounded flights nationwide. faa officials say the contract personnel accidently deleted files in the notice to air missions database. the agency says it's taken steps since to make sure that their systems are more resilient. >> actor jeremy renner revealed he suffered 30 plus broken bones in snowplow accident that happened on new year's day. and here's some pictures that he shared from the hospital. he had blunt chest trauma when he was hit and orthopedic injuries that he was in the snow plow and

tahoe where the search and rescue teams right now around the base and say they are ready for when they might be needed next. that's after feet of snow came down to the last few weeks. so cal oes says that they've had 7 calls now for rescue since mid december. just last week, 2 skiers were rescued after an avalanche in el dorado county. trapped them for a time in certain situations like in a blizzard or an avalanche. the agency reaches out to groups like the tahoe nordic search and rescue team for help. and the group uses advanced mapping technology and works pretty closely with local ski resorts to locate those who go missing. even in the most difficult of terrain and weather. >> we have a lot of folks who get a little too or the weather problems they get turned around and are sure which way is out. sometimes we have injuries. and so people are too far out like a, you know, broken ankle or, you know, on skis, you go out and knee injuries. >> and can't walk out of the mountains so you need to call for help. the rescue group says the calls for help between christmas and the martin luther king junior
