at known. >> now 9 tracking more stout storm damage all across the bay area highway. 92 between interstate to wait in half moon bay remains shut down tonight because of a massive sinkhole. there. chp did not say when this roadway will be back open. caltrans, very concerned that the sinkhole could actually continue to grow. thanks for joining us here on kron. 4 news at 9. i'm vicki liviakis. i'm grant lotus. today's much-needed break from all that rain did allow crews to. >> kind of go into overdrive, repairing the broken roads. so they also were cleaning up debris today. but just like that huge sinkhole, some damage will take longer than a day to fix. oakland zoo expected to be closed at least until next month because of this huge sinkhole there. the zoo had initially said it would open up next tuesday, but it says sinkhole repairs have been delayed. the zoo has been closed since new year's day. officials say all the animals, though, are safe and are being cared for the zoo

also says it will announce plans to extend glow farhi in the next couple of makes a lot of money this time of year. that's a brutal blow for them. well, the powerful storms have also uprooted giant trees, of course, all over the bay area, sadly causing deaths. in some cases. a little toddler was killed last week when it big tree fell onto his home in sonoma county are kroger's. theresa spoke with arbery's today about why so many trees are falling and what residents can do to protect themselves. >> this giant tree fell right in the middle of solano avenue in albany. and look at this. this woman standing in front of a fallen tree that almost crushed her home in larkspur. >> you never know where they're going to fall. they know what they're going to fall this fall. >> bob emrich steam working nonstop these days addressing one hot spot after another. i spoke with him about why these storms are creating such dangerous conditions. simply it's all right. so the water. >> we need the water. we need the rain. so. you know, what

happens is all the water is saturated with okay. the root systems could not handle it. they're they're giving way. i've seen. >> him in the upper 80 trees and this week i cat't even count anymore. josh johns with our burris now says heavy rains mixed. >> with the high winds created bad combination for trees, especially >> i've seen both but definitely the majority of them had some sort of structural issue, whether they were just overly heavy from never being trained in the past or maybe they had decay and the base of the those ones are definitely much more acceptable. >> john says that crews are getting ready for another round of cleanup as yet. another storm barrels its way to the bay area. he says all of the situations should serve as a reminder to residents to take proper care of trees as

an arborist. and i think you should at least have your trees. look that annually. >> especially if larger, mature trees because they have much more potential and risk to 2. yeah safety issue they're neglected and bad things happen like we're seeing right now. >> and there is this area fact, both emmerich and john say that when they have gone to these job sites, residents say that these trees are falling without any kind of warning. first, they are healthy. and then all of a sudden they just come crashing down. here in marin county, theresa kron, 4 news and here in the studio with us now. meteorologist, any hong, any we get little bit of a break today. yeah, a little wanted a healthy enjoyed it because it later tonight and into tomorrow. we've got more rain coming. and then the real strong system really happens over the weekend on saturday. >> we're just saying thank grant. it's actually better timing on the weekend because people are usually off the roads. kids are already home from school. and, you know,

we're not looking at lot of folks going to work for the most part on the weekend. so that is kind of the good thing about this storm happening. but you can still see we have client plenty of moisture still hanging out on the coast. we'll see the rain start to pick up again. probably after midnight tonight and into tomorrow. just in time for friday morning's commute and also into the evening commute as well. winds will also pick up on saturday with a cold front coming through temperatures right now. it was a mild day today. so hopefully got to enjoy. they'll break that we had today. a much needed break. >> temperature right now in san francisco, 59 oakland, 58. 54 in concord and santa rosa at 61 degrees. current winds at this hour. birds still pet light. a little some parts of sampson square at 21 miles an hour. a wind gust 20 file for 25 or happen. bay, the east bay, not too bad, generally less than 10 miles an hour. also 10 for rosa area, ok? so here's a live look at the golden gate bridge. we have some dry roads today. boy, do we need it now with the storms coming this way for friday.

then the next round is we're going to be saturday morning with the passage of a cold front, which means heavy rain, downpours and also some strong gusts coming through. so flooding is a concern for the entire bay area. roads and the soils are already saturated. so do expect more flooding to happen all over the weekend, especially into saturday morning and through monday morning and also will will mostly likely get some downed power lines and power outages. i would stop. and when to start, you know, powering up the especially friday and into saturday morning we'll talk more about what to expect as far as temperatures go. and also tonight, expecting mostly cloudy conditions. again, the rain developing late and it will be a wet commute for friday morning and into friday evening. temperatures overnight we about 47 to 54 degrees. when i come back, we'll talk more about we'll time out the storms for you and also talk more about the forty-niners forecast as well. coming up a little bit later. back to you. all right, annie, the city of antioch has

canceled its martin luther king junior day of service because of the new storms expected. >> over the weekend today, the city's mayor also declared a local state of emergency mayor lamar thorpe says the city suffered an estimated 4 million dollars in damage to the city infrastructure because of these recent storms. and he expects the cost to grow even higher. >> more potholes could surface or get bigger after this. next set of storms kron four's philippe djegal reports from contra costa county where public works. crews are repairing already damaged roads. >> from 7 o'clock in the morning through the afternoon, tending to one pothole after another contra costa county public works. crews identify is now that flood waters have washed up the where a limiting hazards. >> along our roadways to make them safe on thursday. focused on road in discovery bay. >> vision manager chris lau says some of these potholes

critical failures on infrastructure that we and in alameda county as ressa, the 9 bay area counties use. >> all the damage combines they're estimating it's going to cost the county about 52 million dollars to fix it. swalwell says he's asking the state to reimburse the county and local sites for the millions of dollars. they'll have to spend to make the repairs, especially in places like this where crews will be building from the ground up. as for when that construction will start, alameda county public works says they hope to start as soon as possible. >> staying in the east bay, oakland, police are seeing an uptick in robberies of mail carriers and the most recent incident happened last month. kron four's gayle ong is live with us in studio with details on this. good evening, gayle. >> good evening, grant and vicki, a scary situation for mail carriers. oakland police say in several cases the suspect would hold the postal workers at gunpoint. demand a key to the truck and steal

mail open. police and postal inspectors are actively investigating the robberies in the crimes are not just happening in oakland. >> outrageous and unacceptable. level of threats to to mail carriers just trending that jobs. >> postal inspector matthew norfleet on the 7 armed robberies, his office and bay area. authorities are now investigating all targeting postal workers in the months since september. most of them in the east bay. but we're investigating robberies in. >> the berkeley, oakland, newark and fremont. >> back in november, a usps mail carrier was robbed at gunpoint in vallejo, grabbing the postal workers keys before taking off in their mail truck. other recent robberies following a similar pattern to target the robbery seems to be take the male keys. >> so that someone else can still mail later using those mail keys. we've also seen personal property of carriers take in vehicle keys and and mail off the off the carriers person out of the truck on

thursday, oakland police released a public safety advisory about the robberies according to opd. the most recent incident happened on december. 22nd police say a postal employee was robbed on wilson avenue just north of macarthur boulevard after 02:00pm. meantime, concern about members of the public also becoming targets. >> the opd releasing tips to stay safe, including probably pick up your mail after delivery, especially if you are receiving a check or merchandise, get a locking mailbox, request your income tax return to be electronically sent to your bank account and hand outgoing mail to the carrier. take your mail to a postal box or post office. the usps with strong words for the criminals responsible. and a reminder that any crime against a postal worker is punishable under both federal and state law. it is a very serious crime. >> and people can expect to go to prison for it. >> last september, an east bay man was sentenced to 51 months in federal prison for the armed robbery of a mail carrier in oakland carriers are a dedicated their brave.

and there's there's carriers out there still delivering mail in the same neighborhoods where they've been robbed. >> in some cases multiple times. so i you know, i have nothing but respect for the care so that they're doing that job, but they shouldn't have to face this to do it. >> postal inspection service is offering up to a $50,000 reward for information on it. several of these mail carrier truck robberies in the studio. gayle ong kron. 4 news. >> chang powell was sworn in. opens to mayor this week, but now there's another challenge in the outcome of that race. unlike a previous failed attempt at this recount, this one may actually happen. our chris has it made. you has details. >> so a recount is going to happen. >> a recount is going to happen. perform the duties of mayor of the city of oak within days of shane powell being sworn in as city of oakland's 51st mayor, the alameda county board of supervisors voted in favor of the recount in the mayor's race and the vote was unanimous.

>> the vote on that was in the wake of an admitted technical error and a recount made by the alameda county registrar of voters in the oakland unified school board election which led to a different outcome. alameda county supervisor keith carson author the proposal to have a recount in the oakland mayor xrays. the difference between then candidate tao and her opponent council colleague lauren taylor was 677 votes. i think that there was general consent not just with the board of supervisors, but with everybody. >> that we were attempting to do this to not only give confidence to the selection and try to rectify the mistake. so do you welcome the decision by the alameda county board of supervisors for recount? i absolutely welcome this decision, although lauren taylor conceded the election and vowed not to pursue a weak out. >> he admits that he did have his own doubts about the final outcome. absolutely. when you look at a small margin of less

than 2.5%, it seems though a recount makes sense. it also makes sense to mayor shane in a new statement regarding the prospect of a recount. she writes in part, quote, if the board of supervisors and registrar of voters choose to conduct a hand recount in the mayor's race to bring additional assurance that every vote was counted accurately. >> i welcome it fully, unquote. >> now due to this being an unforced error, the county will foot the bill for the recount. no date has been set and any legal challenges that happened along the way will have the potential of slowing down the final outcome really key and important. >> it is to try to reach store confidence in the electoral process. >> has he met kron? 4 news. >> it was a historic night in oakland last night is the new school board voted to keep 6 schools open in the district. this came after violent

clashes last school year when parents in the district staged protests angry about the closure of a neighborhood school. the most recent vote means horace mann, brookfield carl munk, grass valley and fred t korematsu discovery academy elementary will all remain open. now, hillcrest elementary will continue to offer schooling for grades 6 through 8. >> and the south bay, santa clara county, preparing for the next round of storms with potential flooding expected tomorrow and through the weekend, officials are urging all residents to sign up for alerts sec. that's the counties official emergency alert warning system residents can sign up for the alert online or download the app on their smartphone. the system notifies residents about flooding, power outages. road closures and mudslides. and these are the latest outage numbers according to pg and e tonight, as of 5 o'clock. this evening, just under 6700 customers did not have their power. south bay still has the most outages with almost 5600

investigate why classified documents were found. it. president biden's delaware home and in one of his dc offices. it's a move that's intensifying the questions surrounding biden's actions after he left the vice presidency back in 2017 or kron four's. catherine heenan has details. >> one batch of classified documents was found in the office of a think tank that biden used the second in the garage of his delaware home. both were from his time as a vice president, attorney general merrick garland did appoint a former u.s. attorney to look into the question of whether the documents were mishandled. the white house press secretary refused to comment on why the administration did not mention the second batch of documents. want to talk about the others. democrats argue this is very different from the uproar surrounding classified documents and former president trump. but republicans suggests the justice department is proceeding far more politely and carefully in biden's case.

>> here's an individual that's been in office for more than 40 years. here's an individual said on 60 minutes that was so concerned about president trump's documents locked in behind and now we find it just as a vice president keeping it for years out in the open to different locations. i do not think. any american believes that justice should not be equal to all we know because of court filings that donald trump's case. >> he was asked multiple times to return the documents refused to return. the documents are still a dispute as well as to whether he's returned all the documents. so to me, the most important question here is intense. people know. >> i take classified documents are classified material seriously. >> the president acknowledges some of the documents were next to his corvette and his garage. he says, well, it was a locked garage. another point of contention, the first set of documents was found before the midterm elections. that fact was not disclosed at the time. >> our catherine heenan reporting for us tonight.

meantime, president biden praised today new inflation data showing high prices are on the path to cooling off inflation overall does remain well above normal levels. prices rose 6 and a half percent. the cost of electricity, hotels and apparel all increased from 2021. well, gas and used cars brought. but for the first time in more than 2 and a half years, americans actually paid a little less for goods than they did the month before the consumer price index fell a 10th of a percent from november to december. the data is clear. >> you know, inflation is high and major economies around the world is coming down in america month after month. can the family some real breathing room? >> investors hope a new data means the federal reserve will take it easy on the next rate hike. they are set to make that announcement on february. 1st. >> next, immigration reform. is it gaining momentum after leaders made trips to the

>> now at 9.30, after this video surfaced of a san francisco owner hosing down an unhoused woman. another gallery down the street is being wrongfully accused online for folks unfamiliar the jackson square neighborhood where this happened. it's near north beach is home actually about half a dozen art gallery. scott for celso the moeny in this live in the newsroom with us with more on this mix-up. l a? >> yeah, that's right. that video has been widely circulated in lots of eyes on it. a lot of people enraged and they have been taking to the internet in protest of foster quinn, who owns an art gallery in his name, seen in the video. but today, employees of another art gallery called 08:03:06am, located just up the street. also on montgomery found out that their google reveals were also suffering. people angry with quinn mistakenly left comments on their profile. they are actually many art

galleries in that vicinity. one comment posted a photo of the incident. so employees of 08:03:06am, have had to respond saying that they are just neighbors and they're not affiliated. but instead are a nonprofit art gallery. the don't support his actions. in a statement to kron 4 the road, 8, 3, was made aware but neighboring gallery owners, inhumane actions toward a community member. we condemn his actions as of warrant and we are deeply agonized to have seen someone treated so cruelly. we are one of many other galleries in the area. while we understand that there has been some confusion and misdirected anger towards us amongst the outrage, we want to clarify that we are not affiliated with foster going gallery or its owner. collier going in the newsroom. ella sogomonian kron. 4 news. thank you the latest drought map was released today. this is what things look like. >> several months ago in october, you see a lot of, you know, red on the map marking extreme drought and even more

concerning that darkest red them room show most representing exceptional drought. that's the worst you can get. all right. so fast forward to last week and there are no exceptional drought areas that are visible on the map. >> and today, wow, look at that progress. the most recent drought map shows almost no extreme drought. the map was released today, but this status here was, as of tuesday, of course, it's rain since then. so that figures to get even better and it's going to rain this weekend and tomorrow. >> a little bit of red their way at the top. the border of siskiyou and >> modoc counties. but all in all, a vast improvement. yeah passed. so now republican lawmakers are calling on the governor to make more investments in water it concerns that much of the recent rainfall just is ending up in the ocean. yeah. point those republicans say the state could get more than 20 trillion gallons of water by the time the storms are said and done and in the middle of this historic drought, they argue more should be done to safe water

east bay, the state department of water resources is going to continue flood releases at lake del val until saturday. livermore police are asking people to stay away from the arroyo is leading down from del val and their adjacent trails. adele bell regional park remains closed because of all the flooding there. the park also doesn't have power or water. >> rising water levels along the salinas river are threatening to effectively cut off the monterey peninsula from the rest of the state. the monterey county sheriff's office share this aerial view of the river near gonzales. that's a long 101. the county is expected to shut down some of its major roads between tonight and sunday morning because of flooding. authorities are also discouraging people from traveling. investigators in the north bay believe a generator running inside a home is linked to the death of 2 met the sonoma county sheriff's office says a tree trimming crew found the man dead inside a home in sea

ranch last night. investigators say the men were in separate bedrooms of the house and there was a generator in the hallway, according to the sheriff, the generators power switch was turned on and its fuel tank was empty. according detectives are now working to identify them and notify their families and confirm the cause of death. authorities warn people not to run generators inside buildings because they released noxious fumes that can result in carbon monoxide poisoning and sometimes debt. >> the search intensifies for a 5 year-old little boy swept away from his mom by flood waters near san miguel in san luis obispo county, the california national guard is joined the search and rescue teams from across the state still looking for that little boy on the ground and from the air on monday, kyle doan was on his way to kindergarten with his mother's truck. got stuck in the rising flood waters. his mother was rescued. but before help could arrive, she says the strong

current ripped her son out of her hands. the only sign rescuers have found so far. little noah. is one of his shoes. several dangerous storms move through the south today, killing at least 7 people in alabama and producing tornadoes that uprooted trees, downed power lines and caused significant damage to homes and businesses. according to the national weather service in birmingham, one of those tornadoes moved through selma causing a path of destruction in its wake. and in morgan county, alabama, damage and injuries were reported after a tornado tore through the decatur area. a kentucky, tennessee, mississippi, all had tornado warnings issued today as the storm moved across the region. momentum is growing on immigration legislation following trips to the border by president biden and a group of senators. >> but with a divided congress, any bill would have to be bipartisan kron four's hannah brandt explains where

the discussion stand at this point. >> despite decades of effort, lawmakers keep failing to find a solution for immigration reform. one of the most difficult that you could possibly be willing to address in congress, but it's critically important. but after a trip to the southern border with a bipartisan group, senator thom tillis has been and how we made a lot of progress. but we have to have everybody on the same page for what the problem is before we can start drafting a solution to it. president biden also visited the border last weekend and says while his administration is working on its own solutions, it's time for congress to step up. >> what he's going to continue to call line is for congress to actually take action but divided control. congress makes the issue more complicated. the republican majority house and democrat majority senate both have to agree on a plan. if there are responsible individuals who want to tackle these challenges together, we stand ready to do that. house democratic leader hakeem jeffries argues it's

in the north bay, all 7 reservoirs in marin county are full. we're looking at alpine lake filled at the top and there's more water coming in off the hills there. great to see. now look at this video from 2021 of how the reservoirs and marine looks sad. you could walk across some of them back to the president were in water says the current reservoir storage is 100% of capacity and normally this year would be around 78% of capacity. you know, the drought monitor the snowpack and the coming round of storms. a real good indications of california. >> could be getting out of the drought and those mandatory water restrictions might become thing of the past. we shall see. but it keeps raining as kron four's. dan kerman tells us water right now. it's just too early to make that final determination. it's not even mid january in

the sierra snowpack is more than 200% of average for this time of year. >> and some reservoirs are already filled to the brim andy samberg. we saw i mean, essentially half of the rainy seasons range and one month. and so we normally get about 40 inches a year. and we are currently as of yesterday at 38 inches of precipitation month. but andrea pook with east bay mud says its 1.4 million customers will remain under a mandatory 10%. water use restrictions for the time being forecasting is not such a precise science, right. and so this was supposed to be a dry year. and yet here we are. we're hopeful that we're trending in the right direction and we're not going to see those same conditions this year. >> but we have to wait and see that keller with the santa clara valley water district degrees. despite better than promising snow and rain. he says history has demonstrated its too early to pull the plug on valley waters 15% water restrictions at this time.
