tv   KRON 4 News at 8am  KRON  January 11, 2023 8:00am-9:01am PST

8:00 am
to hear that? yeah, that was just a computer lab right now, which is fixed at this moment. but the faa is national like ground stop has caused ripple effects even here in the bay area. we're going to be live at sfo without impacting travel. >> from the area's local news station, you're watching the kron. 4 morning news >> and thanks for starting your day with us and aria and i'm james. yes, we've got problems at the airports are not weather related, at least not initially that there's a problem later. there's an of weather-related problems to talk about this morning. so we'll go out live there in a minute. but first, let's get that forecast. yeah, and we're not done with this rain, john. we are not done with that. you can't blame the problems at the airport on it, but you can blame that slower commute on it for sure. at least you should be slowing yourselves down. cause roadways are definitely wet out there now today by no means going to be a stormy as yesterday was. so we are. >> breaking down the severity just a little bit. but it is still going to be a morning to yeah. watch those roads. watch those pond in spots we're at
8:01 am
right now in downtown san francisco. you see the gray. you can see the rainfall pushing across the bay area for the most part, showers or light to moderate. let's start at the russian river because we do have high water levels up along the russian river in northern sonoma county. actively raining as it has for the past few hours ground saturated. so we will have some runoff there petaluma on over to sonoma. you are seeing some areas of moderate rain there as you are also in marin county. and let's work our way down to the south bay where we actually do have this little area of i don't want to call it heavy rain. just really moderate rainfall sitting there what we see from fremont on over to seminole. so really compared to yesterday. it's quiet. but i do also want to ignore the fact that, you know, roadways are slick today. so to take it slower, we do have a lot more rainfall just around the corner ahead of us. that will be seen throughout the course of the day. all this cloud cover continuing to push our direction, especially on in the afternoon between 10:00am and 04:00pm pockets of heavier
8:02 am
showers can be expected, especially for the north bay hillsides. this could result in swollen small streams, a little bit of flooding put risk up there and also just a slower go for the evening commute right before the showers move out. tomorrow is going to be a nice and dry one-year break from the rain. take full advantage of that. flood watches expired for most of the bay area. but if you're old north of the golden gate in hurricane is that's a napa, sonoma and marin counties. you do still have flood watches in effect today. a little bit breezy to 15 to 30 miles per hour. wind gusts this morning in temps mostly in the 40's to 50's. so get the rain jackets on the rain, boots and the umbrellas with all going to be getting some good use out of them yet again today, rain. all right. thanks to that. and john mentioned slowdown slick highways out there. >> crockett down towards the maze. 25 minutes to make that drive. still a 20 minute systemwide. bart delay, something you need to know this probably going to be an issue for the next few rainy days as well. 23 minutes into
8:03 am
the city. this a long it's going to take you right now are san mateo bridge. 16 minutes 80 to one on one as you're traveling across towards the peninsula. richmond, sandra fell bridge. you can see water droplets on the lands. so, you know, it's slick. 9 minutes doesn't mean a speedo. crockett towards the maze or a 37 to the tolls across golden gate bridge going take you 33 minutes. remember, still strong wind gusts. you can see it from that flag there. don't drive fast darya. james, back to you. thanks. a lot of rain, let's get back to the breaking news which is for the faa having that computer outage halting air travel nationwide. >> now that's fixed. but the damage is done because of the domino effect that we can see the live look there at sfo planes on the tarmac. some of them waiting. some of them slowly rolling. >> we've got kron 4 sarah stinson inside talking with passengers keeping an eye on the situation. joining us now live with the update. hey, sarah. >> that's right. those flights to their back up and running. but as you said, we're going to be seeing the effects of this ground stop in the coming
8:04 am
hours. we talk with someone who flew out last night. well, he tried, but then had to get off the plane. and then we talked with someone. his family can't fly out today because of this. so it's really just an array of situations. you see a group here getting ready to fly out. it's a lot of people were trying to get prepared. got we've got a bright got to grind. >> well, let's take a look at the situation that we have nationwide. take a look nationwide. 6,139 delays. >> over 1000 cancellations, sfo 128 delays. 22 cancellations as we're seeing right here. definitely see on the board. oakland, 73 delays and the airport in san jose. 88 delays. and these are the effects we're seeing from this issue. the faa restored note am which is called notice to air mission systems is a vial system and alerts staff and pilots about closed runways, equipment outages and other
8:05 am
potential hazards. a long flight routes. now, let's hear from 2 flyers or one person who flew out last night flight got canceled get off the plane. he'll explain that the pilot says and then we'll hear from a man tried to drop his office family heading to brazil, but their domestic flight got canceled. >> our pilot came on and said there's an faa ground stop that all flights in the whole country have been canceled. it seem like, you know, there's lots of bad like going on with all the flights being canceled and >> things like that. and it. but we didn't think we're going to be affected by. course, it turns out that something else jumps up and bites us. >> and that's why we're trying to make sure people are aware if you're flying out today. check your flight status now because you want to make sure you're not affected. another president has been briefed on this situation saying there's no evidence to believe there's a cyber attack. however, the president wants the transportation department to
8:06 am
conduct a full investigation on the causes of this. and the faa says they are doing that right now. now you can see live right now this. these are people heading out checking in their baggage. some people are lucky, but others they're waking up to find out their flight is canceled or delayed. i'm sarah stinson reporting live at sfo. back to you. ok, thank you so much a long day for everybody. thank you, sarah in the south bay also >> dealing with headaches as well. several neighborhoods still without power this morning because of the storm yesterday hammer the south bay makes for a long day. 2 have power. got a lot of cleanup to do. kron four's will tran is live in the south bay with the latest. well, good morning. >> slight correction, james and ari along days because now we are starting after one day at willow glen neighborhood in san jose because they were without power right around this time yesterday. and they are still working on it. let me step out of the way. show you what's going on.
8:07 am
>> look at this. see that cherry picker. nobody's inside because they're using it to prop up those wires from dropping to the ground. you can see the crew members down below pg and e's actually using their own people and subcontractors to try to get to the bottom of all of this to get the power back. we do know that some distribution poles came down, which took out some lines and some transmission towers. and that seems to be the root of the problem. look at this, james and ari, a look at that poll. they're also using equipment over there to prop up that poll from dropping to obviously damage that building or destroyed that building underneath. and obviously the ripped down all those poles and lines. if that poll goes down as well, they don't know when it will be fixed. but we do know the latest numbers from pg and e 11,600 people in the south bay still don't have power. lots of cleaning up to do. i got to tell you, there will be here for quite some
8:08 am
time and a lot of people without power, of course, uncomfortable. but more importantly, i guess if you run a business, not just uncomfortable, you are absolutely losing money because you can't open to the customers because your coffee maker or whatever does not work. so it's disastrous in terms of money and for people's comfort. at this time, the only if, you know my can you take the camera right off the tripod. i want to show you something over here as well. they will are. they still have to fix things before they even get to the wires and clean it up. look at those branches, the trees on the ground as well. and the wind and the rain just snapped part of that tree. you can see the limbs and branches off on that side. so lots going on south bay. just hang in there. you guys of the hardest hit of all the bay area. and i want to do another quick storms story. james and ari, a i just got my tire fixed because it was, you know, has suffered a
8:09 am
flat when i was done with my 7 o'clock live shot, ran down. got it fixed because there was a nail inside. got back on television. i asked them what's going on. told me that all that flooding, all that water washing up sharp objects and nails onto the roadways. so they are fixing more flat tires than ever before. what a mess. the things you do to get back his back to you. that's like pit crew action who took care of that for you will. they were amazing. >> i know they put me at the top of the list. i said i know james hey, get out of the way i get on there. but the cop on the rack and there it is right there. the things we do for our viewers so great just to get back on all those objects on the roadway at this time. thank you will and a good word to the wise for everybody out james. well, and good observation room to see a lot of debris on roadways and with
8:10 am
people driving it's going to be a problem. and here's a map that validates exactly what will was talking about. >> the south bay has been hit the hardest with power outages. in this latest round of wet weather, 16,000 plus customers without power. this is pg e's outage map. >> and the bulk of it is yeah there on the lower peninsula and certainly down to the south bay. so let's begin our tour there as we take a look at where we're seeing some of the hardest hit areas we have about 11,600 customers in the south bay currently without electricity. and if you zoom in, you'll see we have a few neighborhoods where we're seeing the power out right now. right along park more and lincoln avenue. there's a neighborhood there where we have 500 to 5,000 customers without power. and then farther to the south, you see another area of yellow just to the east of campbell. so that's one of the problem spots. otherwise you're looking at slu of minor reports of power outages sprinkled all throughout the south bay. and of course, it's not minor for you if your power's out. but in terms of the degree of difficulty to repair, we're looking at potentially minor fixes, which would be good because that
8:11 am
means power can get restored that much quicker for you in the south bay from here. let's jump over to the east bay. see what's going on there. it's been fairly sparse, which is good news. you've got your 6.80, corridor really from about alamo up towards martinez. we've got minor outages going on there and then also in the east bay shoreline, but really not a whole lot. in fact, in totality, the east bay has about 243 customers without power. right now, the north bay also has been sporadic. the c, one corridor from the golden gate bridge right up through santa rose. you can see there's just a few locations that are out. but in sonoma county in the hillier areas, that's where we're seeing more widespread power outages is going take a little while for pg e to get up there and fix those issues because again, that are little more difficult. they still have trees coming down. so they got to be careful about 1300 customers or so in the north bay without power. currently, that's the situation with pg and e again, they need steady, dry weather to get the bulk of his work done. and according to john looks like thursday might be the day that that happens.
8:12 am
>> it's 8.11, and still ahead on the kron 4 morning news, the department of justice is conducting an investigation after potentially classified documents were found in a private office. the president joe biden wants use. and governor newsom is warning californians that the storm made over yet rough weather conditions may be the norm in the coming days ahead. get that little break on thursday as james mentioned. and then it's right back to it into the weekend of the well through next week, too. >> and today we've got to get through some rain as well from 10:00pm to 04:00pm, some of the heaviest of its expected things starting to come down into the evening talking all about it in your forecast and we still have a 20 minute systemwide bar delay. and if you are traveling out there, slow it down because remember, may not be coming down hard and it's slick. we'll be right back
8:13 am
8:14 am
8:15 am
>> 15 right now and we are checking your we do it frequently because it's been changing frequently. and we look for every moment. it's our service free. it's just our way of trying to get us all through this because it's this. you think, john johnny want to start charging? i think, ari, i've already been charging was and that's haha. now that has been great and i love that picture behind you. yeah, timing does look good. you can see outside of lake tahoe right here. snow piled up last night. >> love to see it. now, if you want to head up to the mountains today, you can go for it. just make sure you have those chains in effect.
8:16 am
it is very nice, relatively still looking day up there. get up there. enjoy all that fresh snow pack. just love to see how healthy this winter snowpack has been. we are looking at some updates to your snowpack data across the sierra nevada. now, this number right here actually needs another update. its 167% of average for the northern sierra. this is based on where we're supposed to be for this time of year. central sierra almost double what normally are and the southern sierra over double that. so this is such excellent news to be seeing now with that snow pack up their eventually, that's going to melt off. run into a reservoir is later on this year. and that should help a reservoir levels out eventually to which as we've been seeing are still around half, if even below halfway full. but snowfall still has yet to melt and that will help to fill some of those reservoirs up. radar shows you that we do have light to moderate rainfall across the bay area right now for most of
8:17 am
us, it's fairly quiet like in san jose, but the heavier pockets of rain just east of milpitas also showing up in the radar to the west of the bay area. there's that line of clouds. and at this point you probably guessed what that is. that moisture plume shuffling in shower after shower on into the bay area today. going to be a wet one before a breather. tomorrow. notice this massive system sitting offshore. it looks imposing it is going to spread rain now today, a break tomorrow and then into friday, saturday and sunday, we have another system pushing in after that. that will result in more rain on into next week. so we're keeping the unsettled pattern around, least over the next 10 days before we calm things down into the following weekend, futurecast shows those showers this morning. we will see our heaviest of rainfall picking up after 10:00am lasting right up to the evening commute tonight, heaviest of rain will be nearby the coast in the north bay and it starts to move out right at the tail end of your evening commute. quieting down this evening after which point and tomorrow, as i mentioned,
8:18 am
is that break from the rain, a much-needed break for that matter. rainfall estimates for the rest of the day today, anywhere from a 3rd of an inch to some heavier estimates up there in the north bay mountains. you get on top of that this weekend's atmospheric river and what we'll see next week. and we've got another 3 to even 10 inches of rainfall on top of what we've already seen. flood watches remain in effect for the north bay today from solano county out to sonoma county. so watch that risk of heavy rain this afternoon resulting in swollen streams and some ponding of water still under some wind advisories as well. but today, all in all will be a rainy is not near as severe as yesterday was. it's 50's for your daytime highs and rain mostly spread out through the day. none of that lightning heavy downpours and hail like we saw yesterday tomorrow. not just our smiled one. some low 60's for ya, we work our way into a rainy weekend and another rainy week next week. so enjoy tomorrow's nice break, rain. all right, john, thank you for that. i'm looking forward to a nice break. >> if you're traveling along

8:28 am
8:29 am
8:30 am
>> 8.29 right now. let's see how the morning is going so far. no, still a little windy. yeah. when i came it was raining. it was raining. i say that about now we see people out for their bike ride and some people taking in their job. not having these umbrella at the moment. yes, but don't get too comfortable. >> this is true as we get another day of rain and then more where that came from. after that, john ambrose said to be tricky and bikes, if you've ever especially if it's like it is right now, you could see it is breezy out there got the flag of appear 15 it's below and then that strong wind right now it's about 20 to 30 miles per hour gusts. this is nothing compared to yesterday, but it is something. so as you're getting outside, just make sure you're slowing it down. i love to see those joggers out there. as we've noted, though,
8:31 am
great to see people kind of back to normal after such a stormy morning yesterday at this radar lit up in green is nothing new. it's just those light to moderate showers out there. none of those heavier pockets. we did see some heavier stuff over morgan hill and gilroy just a few moments ago. it's really died down for you now. all that cloud cover you're seeing out to our west. that is of moisture laden. a plume or another atmospheric river, essentially that is just pushing right into the bay area. starting today. we catch a breather tomorrow, though, just got to get through today's rain first between 10 and especially 05:00pm tonight we'll areas of heavy rain specially for the north bay. we still do a flooding risk in the north bay marine sonoma county's small streams overflow their banks could result in some very swollen waterways. and then those a lower elevations like solano and napa counties, some more pooled water down into the delta as possible by 07:00pm. we're out of the rain for the north bay before that
8:32 am
for the rest of us. and that starts our dry trajectory into tomorrow. it doesn't last long. we're back to the rain by friday. so really enjoy tomorrow. it's dry weather. the north bay back under flood watches today. the rest of us, though, east bay peninsula and south bay sitting it out. as for winds, those 20 to 30 miles per hour. gusts are definitely being seen, especially on the embarcadero. so it's wet. it's a bit windy. but compared to yesterday, not near as stormy. and that's definitely a good thing. upper 40's to low 50's right now bring the rain jackets, bring the umbrella and do hold them extra tight as the wind is still a deal rain. all right, john, thank you for that. there is still a 20 minute systemwide bark delays. so travel bar today. >> please be mindful of that. don't leave the house late thinking you can catch bart, give yourself a lot of extra time traveling into the city. meteor lights are on. 26 minutes. slick bridge. high winds so travel slow 60 minutes. 80 to 101. you can see the high winds blowing that poll back and forth. there. so definitely still an issue this morning. a richmond

8:34 am
opened your own time yet. >> so they're going to new york. i spoke with a couple other people heading over to hawaii, different places for the most part. everybody seems to be on but over when it comes to united, we did see a lot of those delays. take a look right now. this is what the lines are looking at. like, you the white house also did comment on this. the press secretary put out a statement saying that president biden had been briefed on the situation as of right now, there's no security threat, but he is asking for an investigation to find out exactly what caused these issues to happen. let's get details up on your screen to take a live look over at all the other airports. and i feel like far as these numbers and they could change within the last, you know, 5, 6, minutes or so. but nationwide, we're looking at 6700 delays, san francisco airport right now 153 oakland, 71 san jose about 90 but those are kind of what the numbers are looking like in. you know, when it comes to again, these travelers, everybody seems to be pushing through. we're back out here live now. and as i spoke these
8:35 am
people earlier there heading over to new york, hopefully they have a slice of pizza for us. but, you know, that's kind of what the morning is looking like here as we get more information. we'll continue if you guys more information but all send it back to you guys live in the studio. all right. thank you so much, michael. thank you. all right. well, in the south bay, they're also dealing with their own headaches to, in fact, the city of san jose. >> he's trying as best they can to keep trees off of the roadways. but that's difficult. just to tuesday alone, it had 200 calls. plus for help from anything from downed trees to potholes to flooding in certain areas. and we did speak with some of the crews out there doing the work and they say this has been the busiest they've seen in a long time. >> i worked for 21. i was you know, this few years will have raining and we take it just one. so they business that was busy old time right now. >> yeah, officials say it's not just the trees, but like i said, there's road damage to deal with a lot of issues in the city says they typically like to respond within 48 hours of a call coming in. but right now they've got
8:36 am
emergency scheduling on tap. they've got all hands on deck and they're trying as best they can to respond to these calls within one hour. so they're really running around. also happening today, the search for that 5 year-old boy who's been missing now after being swept away by flood waters in san luis obispo county. that search is expected to resume this morning. crews spent tuesday looking for kyle. don't in the san marcos creek bed in san miguel. right near paso robles. the search was called off because of low visibility yesterday and cause father says it was his wife and son in the car on their way to school monday when the roads became dangerous. he says his wife didn't see any signs that the road was closed and kept driving. unfortunately, that vehicle got stuck in flood waters and that's when neighbors jumped in. they were able to pull the mother to safety, but they couldn't get to kyle before he was swept away. in the east bay. the steady wave of powerful storms are taking their toll on rural hillsides and roads in castro valley. a mudslide caused a major traffic hazard out. it palo verde road at east castro
8:37 am
valley boulevard. fact that slide happened on new year's eve. the homeowner nearby has been dealing with it ever since. and it's not only the storm related road hazard in the area, too. short distance away. you can see here in the video we had a right there on paula mars road. a large sinkhole opened up. this was caused by a covert being plugged. >> water started running around the fight. undermines the if that pvc line breaks, that's what an 8 inch main. there's a lot of water coming through. >> yeah, the alameda county public works. department is busy responding to a backlog of calls right now. they say they know about the road hazards and there getting to everything as quickly as they can. their workers have been using dispatching tool to try to help address these problems as they come up. >> time now is 8.37. and still ahead on the kron 4 morning news >> because of the storm, we're looking at what some drivers had to do in san francisco to avoid flooded roads or in the case of the current away car.
