outraged, but many police officers as well . >> reporter: a few hundred protesters marched down broadway in downtown oakland sunday chanting . they are fed up, hurt, and angry by another police killing. >> i'm tired of black men getting killed by the police. >> reporter: oakland resident brian said the fact the officers arrested for killing tyre nichols are black shows it's a systemic problem. >> they are not black. they are blue. it's a fraternity. they are part of the brotherhood. >> reporter: they marched to the oakland police department. some say it's ready , time to get rid of police departments. the chief said it's not fair to lump together sfpd in the memphis police department. >> policies in place and hold people accountable. good training and create a culture

of that type of behavior is unacceptable. i think we have the culture in this organization with that type of behavior is unacceptable. >> reporter: the reverend invited law enforcement, faith and community leaders to third baptist church to talk about preventing police brutality. retired as of pd captain williams is the president of officers for justice. her organization has been pushing to hire more black and brown officers to police their own communities. >> we witnessed in 2023, the polar opposite of what we have so hard for. it's a greater understanding for me, and others, that the caller is not what makes the difference in the delivery of the police service. it is the content of your heart. if you still are an ethical person. >> reporter: johnson cried when he saw the police beating video, and it's made him more fearful of the police.

around the nation for tyre nichols. he is the 29-year-old father who died during a violent beating at the hands of memphis police earlier this month. video released from that night renewed calls for criminal justice reform including in the bay area. jarred hill is live for us in memphis with the latest on this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. in the memphis area, there has been some change in the wake of that attack, but members of the community seymore needs to happen. it's something the local district attorney ran on. criminal justice reform, accountability, and there's waiting to see if he makes good on his promises as the community prepares to lead tyre nichols to rest . over the weekend, protests to honor tyre nichols after memphis released video showing the violent police arrest that led

to his death three days later. the memphis grizzlies held a moment of silence before the game sunday. >> prayers to his family. mind blowing and scary. >> reporter: churches offered prayers. >> we are praying for that young man and we are hurting. >> reporter: memphis is preparing to lead tyre nichols, 29-year-old dad who loved to skateboard, to rest in a public funeral on wednesday. >> i was heartbroken to see brothers do that to another brother. >> reporter: a bond arraignment hearing has been scheduled for the five ex-officers of off, according to online court records. each faces multiple charges including second-degree murder , several sheriff's deputies and fire department employees who were at the scene during the incident have been relieved of duty pending investigation amid calls for

further disciplinary action. >> had first aid been rendered, maybe he would've been beat (broken, but he would still be alive. those who watched him die, they are to be held as accountable as the ones who brutalized. >> reporter: the memphis police chief disbanded the s.c.o.r.p.i.o.n. unit which the five former belong. they say t been complaints in the past. tyre nichols' family has accepted an invitation by the congressional black caucus to attend the state of the union address happening in february in washington . >> speaking of the black caucus, we got word that the congressional black caucus requested a meeting with the white house. what can they do to address criminal justice reform on the federal level? >> reporter: there has been a push to try and pass the george floyd justice in policing act. a field in

congress already without the support of republicans. it does not appear that there will be the support among the gop to get a pass now either with republicans taking control of the house. it is something that would potentially create more accountability for local and state and federal police departments and other law enforcement agencies. the question would be if this could get the supported needs to get, to become law . protesters hit the streets in oakland. lauren toms. talking to people in the ground about what i feel it's important to show up. >> reporter: hundreds of people marched in solidarity for tyre nichols in oakland, demanding release reform. one local leader warned the tragic incident in memphis is too familiar and marching for tyre nichols's personal. >> to me us as we have the spirit of life left in

oakland. we can get into trouble, and we can marches , coming to work the next day. >> reporter: she owns a business nearby and loves oakland, even running for city council. a long-standing frustration with the police department has her speaking up and demanding change for her community . >> oakland has to change for us to see the vibrant sitting. we are in the middle of the ocean and everybody has to travel through oakland to get to somewhere. why do we of the issues we have? >> reporter: she and many others marching believe the deadly beating of tyre nichols at the hands of memphis police could happen in her beloved town. she thought how to address her community if it does. >> i was always praying every day what i would say to the community if that happened as an african american in a

video of his violent arrest at the hands of police shook the country. the investigation continues. joining us is reverend brown, a pastor, civil rights leader, and the president of the san francisco chapter of the naacp. we know there are renewed calls for police reform. what does this video tell us about the policing and the work that needs to be done when it comes to law enforcement? >> we must move beyond prayers, protests , and practice police reform. since 2020, we have been talking about police reform. now is the time for us to act. those who have reacted as we appreciate it protes, they must move to the polls and participate in the political process and vote so that we will not have politicians pimping the pain

violence. in san francisco, islands has been done against black people. it's a form of ethnic cleansing. we have laws from 16% of the black population in this town, down to 3.9%. that happened by so-called urban renewal. it was not urban renewal. it was black removal. we must see all levels where there is violence . >> the last question i have, several lawmakers and also activists are pushing for the national police reform. is there a different environment we are in in the country, and what are issues that need to be part of those conversations? >> we are not in a different environment. the same thing was done in 1918 when a dear lady named mary turner was lynched. that was violence.
