from cbs news bay area, this is the evening edition. >> one week, four mass shootings in california. what one bay area survivor says could be done to pro vent future killings. i'm john ramos in san francisco. they were building bridges in the bay view district with an event celebrating black history and the lunar new year. we'll have that story coming up. and will the 49ers super bowl dreams come true or will their season end tomorrow in vern glenn breaks it down. thanks for joining us, i'm andrea nakano. >> i'm brian hackney. we begin

with more gun violence. seven people were shot just outside of beverland four injured. it happened at a multimillion dollar vacation rental. and police are looking for the suspect. four of the mass shootings in california happened in the past week, two in the bay area. >> california has the strictest gun laws in the country, but are the they enough to stop the mass killings? devin fehely spoke with advocates and gun violence survivors. >> we need a strong assault weapon ban across the country. >> reporter: ruth borenstein is chief legislation chair for brady, california and she says the patch work laws weakens the effectiveness of the tough gun control measures california has enacted. >> we are one state among many. we can't do it alone. if somebody can cross the border and bring back a whole host of things not legal here, we can't stop it. >> reporter: with three mass

shootings in california in the span of a single week, it does beg the question, what's going on, and what can be done to stop it? >> every time there is any kind of a mass shooting, it is horrible. >> reporter: allan survivorred a 1991 mass shooting in san francisco. his activism is an outgrowth of that experience and he believes tough gun laws can be a deterrent. >> we need to make punishment for using these weapons and any kind of a crime so strong that you just don't want to go there. >> reporter: the sad and sobering reality many gun control advocates say is in the absence of strong federal nationwide laws. we will continue to be vulnerable to the tragic shootings that have plagued the state this past week. >> new legislation that passed in 2022 are starting to take effect. these are a handful of the laws that apply either this year or next year. gun sales on state owned property is now

prohibited. people convicted of child abuse or elder abuse cannot own a gun for ten years. 3d printing of guns is now illegal without a license. gun dealers can expect a government inspection at least once every three years. and new laws require schools to be transparent about perceived nets and implement a stronger response. the violent start to the year has put communities on edge. john ramos checked in with people at the bay view black history month and lunar new year celebrations in san francisco. >> reporter: this event in san francisco's bay view district was designed to bring two communities together who don't always see eye to eye. bay view hunter point is san francisco's most concentrated african american neighborhood. so you might be surprised by the entertainment they had at the kickoff to black history month. a traditional chinese lion dance. welcome to the 13th annual black history and lunar

new year festival. the local ymca began hosting the event in 2010 after tensions were running high between african americans and asians following a high profile crime incident. >> we need to do something to bridge the gap between the black african american and the asian community. >> reporter: the program combined performing arts from both cultures. residents were treated to a display of chinese tai chi and asian guests experienced music and dance from the black community. >> we use this opportunity to really up each other's cultural history so we can really come together and build community and build trust. >> reporter: that trust is needed more than ever as both groups reel from recent tragedies. the mass shootings in monterrey park and half-moon bay have reignited the fear asian people have suffered after a rash of anti-asian violence in 2021. and now, the black community is once again dealing with the death of another young man at the hands

of police. this time, in memphis. >> all these differences, it's a reality, but then it is also there's a lot of perceptions. >> reporter: eddie zang helped found the organization as a way to focus on positive cultural differences rather than just the negative one. >> the fear is here. people are afraid to go out. go to big events. so then, the fact that people are here today is a testament of people saying we want to take power, we don't want fear and violence to be the driving force for us. we want to focus on love and racial solidarity. >> reporter: the thought here was that if reconciliation is to occur, it will come from the young people. >> events like this, can show that black africans, we are open to all communities. >> are things still kind of tense between the two communities? >> yeah. >> what do you think can change

that? >> both of the communities coming together and making peace. >> reporter: their cultural differences are real, but both groups have suffered violence and injustice throughout their histories. perhaps that shared struggle can be a place where they can find common ground. >> people have taken to the streets this weekend to protest the death of tyre nichols. the 29-year-old died in the hospital after being beaten by memphis police. before moving to memphis, nichols lived in sacramento. there, he is being remembered for his smile, warmth, and wit by friends. >> he had this very amazing smile. and very joyful. like, he never had cliques. he just loved everybody. >> it is just sad. he was kind. i think the other thing is our son was young at that time. there was a large age gap between those two, the fact that tyre would take the time to spend time with younger kids. he was likable and sweet. >> the five police officers involved in the fatal beating

have been fired and now face second degree murder charges. cbs news reporter skyler henry reports from memphis. >> reporter: in memphis, leaders praise the community's response to the disturbing police video showing the brutal beating of tyre nichols during a traffic stop. >> memphis, tennessee honored the memory of young tyre nichols with peaceful protests. >> reporter: and the body cam footage released friday night, officers are seen holding nichols down and repeatedly hitting him with their fists, boots, and batons, during his arrest for suspicion of reckless driving, officers chased him and at one point left him propped against the squad car with severe injuries. the five officers were fired. they were charged with second degree murder and other crimes in nichols' death. >> the citizens of memphis and

shelby county deserve to know the whole story as soon as possible. >> reporter: federal and local authorities continue to investigate while the mayor say the specialized unit the officers have belonged to has been inactive since the death. residents are holding demonstrations while protesters also took to the streets in major cities across the country. meanwhile, newly surfaced video from 2018 shows nichols being interviewed while in line at the dmv in sacramento. >> so as skyler just mentioned, that department was called the scorpion unit and that has been permanently disbanded. back here in the bay area, to return to a story that was a big topic here for weeks, people living in san mateo county who were impacted by the recent storms can now get federal aid from fema. white house has added four new counties including san mateo to their major disaster decorations. county leaders say the storm victims can apply directly to the feds for help.

just go to disasterassistance.g ov. storm recovery is ongoing along the big sur coastline. coast chp helicopters are carrying groceries, medication, other supplies to people cut off by the recent storms. rock slides from the storms are still blocking part of the highway 1. caltrans says it could be another month before the road reopens. >> the oakland zoo is on track to reopen soon as construction workers repair the damage rainstorms tore open this big sink hole at the main entrance on january 2nd. the zoo says it will make an official announcement on monday outlining the details of the reopening. and coming up, 49er fans making their way to philadelphia for the nfc championship game. vern glenn has preceded them. and a beautiful view of the last of this morning's fog as it melted away. right over the heart of the bay near the bay

bridge. we are not doing that anymore. the pattern changes tomorrow. in fact, tomorrow, we are still talking about a chance of rain. but bigger deal than that, it will be cold, windy. we have a lot to sort out on that one. the forecast is coming up next.

back at the pattern we have been at the last few days. it has been like a july pattern in some ways. over the last few days. at least in the city and over the bay. the marine layer has come back in. we caught the last little patch of it. and we had a beautiful saturday afternoon. the fog finally cleared but that didn't happen. until like 3:00 in the afternoon. we are not going to be looking at low clouds and fog like that nearly as much tomorrow. because we need to make way for this next system to come from the north. watch what happens. this thing is coming directly from the north, they never have a lot to work with when they do that. they are coming in over land. when they come straight north, they are cold. they don't deliver a lot of rain. that is tomorrow morning. a few light spotty showers. it will stay with us through the afternoon. into the evening, we can't call this thing done until we get to late

tomorrow. into early monday morning. they will be so few and far between, there is not a lot you can measure from it. the rain is not the main aspect of this but since rain has been so high. there is a chance of rain. it will fall as light snow from like the southern edge, from the diablo range southward basically. we are not going to get much in the north bay. we will get light snow. because it will be cold. it is also going to be windy. watch the screen light up monday morning. that is in the overnight hours. then it will stay that way through monday so probably the biggest element from this is the wind. because we are still vulnerable to having trees go down. so, north bay mountains. if you are at higher elevation ins the north bay, they extra attention to

this one. wind advisory tomorrow afternoon to monday afternoon. wind doesn't get going until late sunday night into monday. we will have downed trees. just be very aware of your surroundings. north bay mountains. the other thing is it is going to be cold. so there is a freeze warning tomorrow. but the thing about that is the wind is going to be strong enough by tomorrow morning, the actual temperature on the thermometer may not be able to get down to freezing. it certainly will monday and tuesday morning. it will get quite cold. but for tomorrow, there is a freeze warning because the potential is there. but the windchill will make it feel cold anyway. it doesn't matter whether we actually get to 32 or not. you still have to worry more about pets an pipes and plants and things like that. when we get to the low 30s . there are your morning lows. it will get much colder tuesday and wednesday. and when we look at the seven day forecast, the next chance of rain is coming on thursday and

friday. that one looks a little more promising. we will have much more on the thursday friday system as we approach it. all right, andrea, to you. some 49er fans are flying to philadelphia for the big game. sfo transformed into what looked like a tailgate party just in time for the nfc championship game. that's the niner noise drum line. and it was quite a party at the terminal. united airlines put on the pep rally as the official airline of the 49ers. they brought in sour dough sam along with the gold rush cheer leaders. many in the big crowd were sporting red and gold. but there were also give aways. >> let's go! we are getting there. >> you can see red jerseys almost everywhere there at the airport today. the faithful always travel well and lucky for them, they took planes that look like this. commemorative towels on every seat for the

faithful. brian? well mr. vern glenn has landed in philadelphia. he landed earlier today. reports from lincoln financial field on the historic connection between the 49ers and the eagles. >> reporter: hello, from lincoln financial field. site of the nfc championship game. san francisco will be looking to sigh tense 69,000 eagles fans. at least one 49er knows what that feels like. in the post season. >> the eagles had defeated the buccaneers four in a row. >> reporter: the general manager john lynch was part of the 2002bucs that beat the eagles in the last game ever at old veteran stadium. >> it was awesome to watch. it was a little bit boring because they had 33 runs for 45 yards. >> reporter: kyle shanahan is hoping for the same outcome tomorrow. he showed the team clips from that game and even 20 years later, it got lynch fired up. >> he came into my office right before when i was going through

philadelphia is known as the city of brotherly love. mike is not expecting much love shown toward the 49er this weekend. he would know. he was born and raised in eagles country. >> it is always exciting going home and playing against your hometown team. in front of i'm sure what will be hundreds of people i know. >> reporter: most of those people will be family members. >> any other sunday we would root for the eagles but not when they are playing the niners. >> reporter: mike is the oldest of 14 grandchildren to dot and bill. >> it is exciting when he comes home because he lives so far away and we miss him. the best thing in life is being a

grandparent. >> reporter: bill's other job is running a hardware store. everyone says why do you like the 49ers? i have blood in the game. there is a guy that has my dna. he has my last name. and he got his six foot eight height from me! when i was in high school playing football, i was six foot six. >> we went to the diner for lunch. as i was leaving the one man was yelling go eagles and i said go niners. and he said, you know, i'm really rooting for your grandson. it will be nice. >> try to be a little more elite about his 49ers. >> i happen to be an eagles

fan. and i usually just say, why a niners fan? and i say my son works for the team. they come back with a challenge of where does he work? on field. where does he work? so i have to tell them that he is the right tackle. >> reporter: the family has a history of rooting against the home team. >> if we search the web, is there an old my space page or something of young mike in an eagles jersey? >> no, probably not. my family switch fred being eagles fans a long time ago when my cousin matt got drafted. no. there is no facebook, my space, any existence of me wearing an eagles gear. you would have to go all the way back to 2004. >> how about the fandom of the philly cheesesteak? is it cliche or is it actually a die hard food there? >> it is. it is definitely a die hard food there, but you call it a cheesesteak. you don't need to put the philly on it because you are there. >> reporter: the more you know.

he said delasandros is his go to spot for a cheesesteak. but they have an appetite for something bigger. >> we are all starving to win. everyone wants their ring. >> is that something that you are going to get out of bed and do whatever possible to make sure you attend that goal? >> you dream about situations like this. whether it is a hunger of starvation, a desperation, you do everything you can to make sure at the end of the game you will win it. to tennis, arena starving for a grand slam and i don't mean denny's. sab ole nka in the far court. dropped first set. but rallied back to win her first major title. she will move up to number two in the world rankings on monday. novak jokavic plays tonight. steph curry and the warriors have won back to back games. if they have won more,
