there that is owthe seven victims of monday's mass shooting. a candle light vigil is planned for 5:00 p.m. across from city hall. the recent shootings are sending shock waves through the aapi community. a vigil in san francisco last night, some called on a wakeup call about mental health. this comes as the shooting suspect confessed to carrying out the deadly shooting ram pain. chunli zhao admitted to the killings in an nbc interview. he said he was not in his right behind when he went and shot people, killing four of them, and then driving to the other farm where he previously worked and killed three more people. zhao said he had been bullied, worked long hours at the farms, and his complaints were

ignored. however, a spokesperson for the california terra garden confirming the suspect lived on the property with his wife and said they had no knowledge of bullying complaints. the back-to-back tragedies in half moon bay and monterey park have been especially hard for the asian american community. the timing, happening with the lunar new year celebrations, shattering what should be a period of joy and hope. here's what first lady dr. jill biden said during the white house celebration yesterday. >> our joy has been shattered by two horrifying mass shootings this week. our prayers are with the family of those lost in monterey park and half moon bay. we grieve with broken hearts alongside every member of the community. >> gianna, in the bay area, the community gathered in san francisco and chinatown for the candle light vigil. >> a lot of people thinking of everyone affected by this, a

time to remember those who died, and a chance for the community to grieve and heal. andrea nakano was there. >> reporter: it was a time for the community to start the process to heal. >> it's been hard to heal because we have seen it so many times in the last couple of years. it took a long time to process this one, where i just felt numb for a really long time. >> reporter: maria tang came with her 6-year-old daughter. the feeling of numbness is one shared by many here at the vigil. ♪ in the arms of the angel, fly away >> one day my world collapsed. i lost the dearest thing of my

heart. >> reporter: one of the vigil organizers shared her experience with great personal loss, and she says the pain she carries silently inside, almost destroyed here. >> it is eating us alive, within. my heart has been so numb because i keep putting layers and layers over it, up to the point i couldn't feel anything anymore. i'm dying inside. >> reporter: some in the asian american community says there's been obstacles to seeking emotional support, due to cultural barriers or lack of resources. those at the vigil say the time is now to break down the barriers. >> if we avoid it, hide it, nothing is going to change. >> reporter: as the community grieves, there's great promise for the future. she's going to be the hope and change and be part of the positive. the hope is just peace and that these violences end. we are getting a look at

the conditions of the half moon bay farmers' conditions. the county supervisor said the pictures were from one of the farms, but he did not specify which one. you can see the sheds here with a mattress on the floor. it's unclear if people slept there. there's also children's toys scattered and an outdoor cooking area. a shed where the supervisor claims the suspect lived. the governor's office says they are now investigating the two farms involved. the attack at california terra gardens was the second shooting at the mushroom farm in the last seven months. a criminal complaint says one of the victims from monday's shooting narrowly avoiding being shot in july. marteen medina was arrested last year in july for shooting his comanager's trailer. authorities said the bullet went through the neighboring trailer with the family inside. one of the family members ended

up being a victim in monday's mass shooting at the same parm. authorities said there's no connection. stay with cbs news bay area for our continuing coverage of all of the recent mass shootings here. we will bring you the latest on air and online. cities across the country are preparing for protest. >> it comes as memphis is expected to release video of the encounter leading to the death of tyre nichols during a traffic stop. he died three days of the violent arrest by police. all five former officers are facing second-degree murder and other charges for their role in his death. last night at an emotional vigil, nichols' family called for peaceful demonstrations. a civil rights investigation has been opened. the police body camera footage showing the camera attack on paul pelosi will be released hours from now. we will also see the home

security footage, and a portion of the interview with david depape shortly after his arrest. paul pelosi's skull was fractured back in october in san francisco. prosecutors said nancy pelosi was the intended target. the court says the material will be available at 9:00 this morning. new developments in the suspension of the oakland police chief armstrong. the local branch of the naacp sending a letter to the new mayor, asking armstrong be reinnovated saying putting him on leave caused division across the city, and members worry it will affect the department's ability to protect the community. a check on how things are looking. jess, coming out this morning, two sweaters. >> really? >> i was really cold. >> keep them handy. the winds are starting to die down, and things are changing in the forecast for us. when the winds calm down, it

allows for the patchy, fog to actually build its way back into the bay area. that's what we are dealing with right now, low visibility in certain spots. oakland is dealing with heavier stuff. the current temperatures, mostly in the 30s and 40s. this is significantly cooler than yesterday at this time. especially for our friends near santa rosa. 29-degree difference there. 15-degree difference in napa. cooling off for the weekend. daytime highs today, only going to top off, really upper 50s and lower 60s throughout the bay area. the winds will be calm for us today. we will see partly cloudy skies returning to the forecast later this evening. to add to that, going into the weekend, there's a chance of showers. i will break it down. doesn't look like a lot. not an atmospheric river. a little drizzle is not too bad. >> a long discussion about this one day. my windshield wipers going a

tad this morning. the roadways this morning. if you're going to the bay bridge, it may be busier than usual. keeping a close eye on the significant bart delays this morning. we told you about it a couple of minutes ago. bart is dealing with the major delays systemwide, due to unscheduled track repairs in downtown oakland. no red line or green line service. check the schedule before you head out the door this morning. headed to 580, 680, the westbound commute is a busy one. a lot of folks trekking to 680, pack your patience, and give yourself extra time. i wish it was friday light, but not the case here. brake lights out of tracy to 580 itself. the conditions, at 580, busy there. jocelyn? we are counting down to kickoff for the 49ers and eagles. kickoff is noon our time.

they leave for the first road game in the playoffs. the team has a packed schedule for the big game this is the last practice at levi's stadium. we will get a chance to hear from quarterback brock purdy and kyle shannan. at 1:45, the teams buses leave to fly out to philly. as i mentioned, the nfc championship game is noon on sunday. . with the super bowl on the line, there's pressure on both teams, but george kittle has how to handle the nerves. >> everyone is watching every rep you take. if you think of it like that, it's big, but if you can still go out there and enjoy yourself and have fun, that does make it a lot easier. metomorrow, united airlines is posting a pep rally at sfo. the cheerleaders and drum line will be there.

confident about the niner's chances in the nfc championship game. it's almost here. we wanted to check out what the experts are saying and predicting for this weekend. the writers and insiders at cbs sports are not giving the niners much of a chance. seven writers are taking the eagles. only one taking san francisco. i don't like this. many see the defense as a challenge brock purdy has not seen before. the eagles are a 2 1/2 point favorite. jocelyn, let's not forget the niners are coming in on a hot streak. >> just to refresh your memory, the niners have won 12 straight games, their longest win streak since 1984. they are going into the conference championship for the 18th time, already the most in the nfl. they are led by the young quarterback, brock purdy, joining a short list of rookie

quarterbacks to reach the conference championship including roethlisberger and sanchez. he could be the first on the list to make it to the super bowl in his rookie campaign. wouldn't that be something? >> yeah, jocelyn, that would be a thing for sure. fingers crossed. the roadways and public transit this morning, and starting with bart. this is a big deal. major delays reported, and no service on the red or green line this morning. consider using alternate means of transportation as they deal with this. unfortunately due to unexpected track repairs in downtown oakland. no transbay service. ac transit with bus service to san francisco on bus nl from 19th street and broadway. also if you have the bart app, they will give you alternates as well. plan for delays if you're taking public transit, specifically bart. we could see a busier than

usual friday morning commute on some of the routes. here's the bay bridge. it's friday, and it's busy. the metering lights are on, and it's slow into san francisco. a lot of people may be skipping public transit, and joining the roadways. you may see the same thing on 880. the golden gate bridge this is friday light, and that's an easy commute out of marin county into san francisco. another hot spot we are monitoring this morning, the ride into the altamonte pass and the dublin interchange. the super commuters, you have 580, slow making the connector there. the speeds down to 9 miles an hour. that is pretty sluggish. you can see in the caltranss shot, connection through tracie, slow. 55 minutes, safe to say, an hour now to 680. that's a look at your morning drive. jess, this morning, when i was driving in, i had foggy spots along 280. patchy fog is sticking

around right now, gianna. for everyone out the door in the next few hours, keep that in mind. the reason we are seeing the patchy conditions, the winds are light, and they are not blowing the marine layer . int the thin marine layer over the water. creeping its way into oakland. visibility is poor near santa rosa, and for our friends close to petaluma. official sunrise is 7:17 this morning. once the sun starts to rise that will break apart the marine layer. we are left with mostly sunny conditions into this afternoon. a big change for us on the way today. we are dealing with a lot cooler temperatures than we were yesterday, around the afternoon hours. yesterday, we were talking about upper 60s, and lower 70s, and notice how we jump about 10 degrees into this afternoon. cool and calm conditions today, and i will say this, even cooler conditions into this weekend. speaking of cool temperatures f you're planning to head up to the lake tahoe area, today, tomorrow, not looking bad. mostly mid-to low 40s, and once

emergency track repairs are underway in downtown oakland, and bart spokesperson, jim allison, is joining us to give us details. tell us what is happening. >> major delays in all directions. with are suggesting people who need to get to work, need to get there on time, consider alternate means of transportation, ferries or buses. we have do have trains running, but they kland. the east y side, you can get to various stations, but they k. on san frscgoin st oakl but the best thing to do, if you're on bart, listen to announcements, and if you're not on bart, consider taking alternate transportation. >> jim, do we know what the exact problem is that is happening on the track that triggered the unexpected need for repairs? >> so every night we shut down service, and we do track repairs, and during that

period, last night, early this morning, we damaged about 20 to 10 feet of third rail. that's the track's power, in the oakland line. it's an underground section of tracks in downtown oakland. what we need to do is get more equipment back on the track, getting those repairs done, so we can get back up to full speed. >> how long do you think it will take to get everything back up and running to normal? >> it's difficult for me to say. i'm not an expert on how the repairs go. we will do it as safely and quickly as we can. >> just looking at your bart alerts, can you tell people, if they go to your app or website right now, is there a way to get information on other options? buses with ac transit, and other things to do or just get the information? >> yes, they can use our trip planners, and just deselect bart as an option, and it will help you find alternate means of public transportation to get to where you need to go. >> thank you so much for joining us early and quickly this morning.

right now on cbs news bay area, at 6:30, video will be released of a violent police encounter that led to tyre nichols' death in memphis, tennessee. the five officers on the screen are facing second-degree murder charges, and there's concerns the video could trigger unrest around the country. jarred hill is joining us live from memphis with the closely watched case. good morning, jarred. >> reporter: justin, for perspective how bad we expect the video to be, the head of the bureau of investigations said it was absolutely appalling, the encounter with the five officers and tyre nichols. as the public prepares to see the video showcasing the final moments of his life, they are trying to celebrate the way he lived. >> justice for tyre. >> justice for tyre. >> reporter: a vigil was held

overnight for tyre nichols overnight. the city is expected to release body camera and fixed camera footage of the incident that led to his death three days later. >> i didn't see it, but from what i hear, it's going to be horrific. >> reporter: his mother addressing the crowd gathered, calling for peaceful protests. >> i don't want us burning up the city or tearing up the streets. that's not what my son stood for. >> reporter: the 29-year-old dad, fedex worker, and avid skateboarder was pepper sprayed and beat when he was pulled over. the five officers are facing charges including second-degree murder, aggravated assault, and aggravated kidnapping. >> what happened here does not, at all reflect proper policing.

this was wrong, and this was criminal. >> reporter: the city is on edge preparing for the release of the footage this evening. the local schools here have canceled afterschool and athletic activities out of an abundance of caution. the police departments in major cities around the country are also on heightened alert for possible unrest in response to the planned release. meanwhile, a civil rights investigation has been opened. the family of tyre nichols is planning to have a press conference in a few hours here to discuss the feelings related to the charges against the now five former officers. back to you. >> jarred, as people await the video release and the protests that could come with it, describe memphis for us right now. >> reporter: right now a lot of people are waiting to see what this is.

the descriptions from law enforcement are what is giving people concern over what the reaction could be. mentioned in the story, the schools already plan to have students out and about as the video comes out. there's also some of the local officials who are seeing with swift actions. the severe charges, and they are hoping it gives the public a sense that the people here are trying to work for them and trying to outright the wrongs, and hopefully they are saying that will be quelling what may come out as reaction. >> i know the country is watching. thank you. >> reporter: sure. good morning. we want to get to breaking traffic news now. if you take bart this morning,

you want to seek alternate methods. unfortunately major delays, and we just spoke to their pio, the press person, jim allison, just giving us information about the issues on the track in oakland, and it was something that started last night, and the red and green line, that service has been suspended, and even he is recommending you seek an alternate means of transportation this morning, especially headed to the transbay tube. no transbay service right now. ac transit providing bus bridges to san francisco on bus nl from 19th street and broadway. you do have that option. there are major delays for bart this morning. the freeways will be busier as a result. more people may be driving instead to work. it may not be an option. there's no word as to when the track will be fixed and back up and running. oakland, live look here, and it looks foggy. it's busy as you head northbound, and it's busy for

up. it's going to break apart the fog. the winds are nice and calm for now, and that also does not necessarily help. things are starting to change as we extend all the way into the afternoon hours. by this weekend, all of us will be inside for the game. >> right. >> yeah. it is nice to get a break from the winds for sure. that's been tough the last few days. >> it's been breezy. a look at this morning's top stories, starting with oakland police with a federal lawsuit filed by the family of an innocent bystander killed during a police chase last june. the 27-year-old from hayward was celebrating his recent graduation with his family at a taco truck on international boulevard when a suspect police were chasing crashed into the group killing him. his family says the officers were in a so-called ghost chase where they keep their lights and sirens off.

>> we just want to see the people involved in the situation on that night for their actions. >> the police officers have been suspended. the driver has been charged with vehicular manslaughter. diane feinstein has not said if she is retiring, but there's a growing list for her seat. adam schiff will run for it, and katie porter announced her seat last month. barbara lee told the congressional black caucus she is entering the race. feinstein filed her paperwork already, but she's undecided if she will run for a sixth term next year. the national archives calling on former presidents and vice presidents to check

their records for classified documents, coming after classified papers were found in the homes of president biden, former president trump, and former vice president mike pence. a source is telling cbs news that trump discouraged aides from moving out, so pence's team did not prepare in time. fans are active on social media showing off 49er apparel and predicting victory. one post showing brock purdy with the phrase, shock the world. >> he may just shock the world on sunday. referred to the faithful for a reason, 49er fans. no shortage in the bay, but in peckville, pennsylvania, that may be hard to mee, since it's eagles' country. one fan does not hold back when it comes to showing off his pride, even behind the enemy

welcome back. a look at this morning's money watch report. looking at the big board here, looking like the dow is up about 24 points this morning. the company behind play-doh and monopoly is announcing job cuts. hasbro is laying off 1,000 people. the demand for toys and games is dropping, and the holiday shopping numbers were disappointing. the layoffs are about 15% of the work force. that's a look at your money

watch stories. now to weather and traffic, beginning first with gianna. breaking news, g? >> major bart delays. if you use bart for your morning commute, rethink it. they are recommending alternates this morning. because of it, major delays systemwide. overnight, apparently, unscheduled track repairs that happened because of track that was damaged from a maintenance vehicle. it happened during the overnight hours. right now, no transbay service. they also have a map on their twitter feed. we will retweet it to give you the information. it gives you alternates and options. ac transit providing bus service on nl from 19th street and broadway. that should help out in you're commuting this morning. all lines turning back at various stations in oakland. some tracks are not damaged, but it takes time to get it back up and running. in the meantime, major delays systemwidefois thatmeaneeys ma i udin88asyo y

it's going to be a light drizzle, if anything a fast- moving system sweeping through california. giving snow for our friends up in the lake tahoe area. keep that in mind. maybe you have a ski trip planned for the weekend. by the way, beautiful. keep the sunscreen handy, today, tomorrow, and sunday, too. they expect light snow hours on sunday, and notice how the temperatures drop, significantly, just into the day. feeling cooler in the bay area, and if you're watching the 49ers win against the eagles this weekend, your local bar or local, you know, neighborhood areas where you want to hang out with friends, and keep in mind t will be chillier, partly cloudy skies, and a splash of showers pushing its way through. all of the models are trending drier for sunday. less than a tenth of an inch is what we expect throughout the bay area. by monday, drying up. partly cloudy skies returning to the forecast, but i will say this, the temperatures will remain in the 50s, and still significantly cooler than what we have been dealing with for the last few days.

despite an ankle injury. other injuries. are you concerned about this? should we be concerned? >> not really this time of the year, what they are doing, and in fact, i have talked to people and said it's like the nfl version of load management that you see in the nba. mccaffrey and mitchell don't need to be on the practice field at this point this week. they have already played, what do you have now? 19 games? everyone is in a good flow. much more important they are in good health. everyone is dinged up this time of the year. guys are used to it. you heard mccaffrey say yesterday, what are the chances you don't play? he said zero. he said everyone is dealing with nagging stuff. i have no doubt those two guys will be out there in full force. >> mark, there's one thing about the games being played at home, and another being on the road in the place like philly, to say the least. that's a tough place to play. how is brock purdy going to be able to handle the playoff atmosphere? >> all i can do and all we can

do is fall back on the fact that he has passed every test, liok, yoca you begood team? a road team? can you play in prime time? can you beat a playoff team? yes, yes, yes the whole time. it doesn't mean he will go out there and throw for 300 yards. this is a really hard game, and these are the two best teams, and it's a losable game for both sides, no question. the idea of brock purdy shrinking in the moment, we have checked that box. he has had so many moments, and it doesn't seem to be in his personality. >> mark, you're making me feel better this morning, more confident. >> good, good. >> that's the idea. >> that's how we start the day. >> as we match up the teams, where do you think the niners have the edge? >> the one spot they really would look to is the

linebacking core. i mean that on both sides of the ball the eagles are good with their line play. the niners are, too. you saw ed rnertaking against d greenwald has been fantastic. the linebackers are fine, but not as good as the niners. it's the weakest spot on their defense. what is good about 15 d. e guy mccaffre i at's the sweet spot. provided purdy has the time to deliver in the area, i think they can win matchups there. >> mark, let's say when they win, right? >> yes, when. >> when they win. >> when they win, would a victory be one of the best road wins in 49ers's history. >> at minimum, right up there. the only one i can think of right now, and obviously doing it conceptually, not knowing how it would play out, but there was the nfc title game in atlanta, and the 49ers had to rally from down a couple of

scores and win with collin kaepernick to end up in the super bowl. that's really the only road win late in the playoffs to potentially rival one like this. add in that in this one, the 49ers are the underdog, and philadelphia was the last team to lose a game this year in the nfl, and all of those things. chances are, if they win it, we will probably give it the label. e y , you , it cowiin49ers's his and mentioned brock purdy. what if he has the incredible game to take them to the super bowl? that could be one of the top story lines in history. >> not just a story line. i don't see how it doesn't get, you know, turned into a movie. >> right? >> we have already got the title it will be irrelevant. that's the title of the book, the movie and tour. we have never seen this.

welcome back. we start off with bart this morning. bart is dealing with major delays. check the schedule before you head out the door. crews are doing unscheduled track repairs. this is in oakland, due to track damaged from a maintenance vehicle during the overnight hours. at the moment, no transbay service, and definitely plan ahead. bus bridges are in place, offered by ac transit, providing service to san francisco on bus nl from 19th street and broadway. there's no word as to when things will be back up and running on time. this is causing major delays throughout the line. all lines are currently turning back at various stations in oakland. tracks that are not damaged, but that can be used. at the moment, they are trying to make sure everything is good to go. we may see more cars on the roadway. that's what is happening on the

bay bridge. busy already for the folks making the trek into san francisco. we can hardly see the freeway there, but tracking slow spots along 880 of the freeway near the coliseum. the travel times, most important heading out the door. 25 minutes from the maze to 101 if you're taking the bay bridge. see the fog, jess? petaluma, oakland, where you at? us 'shave great visibility, and others are blanketed with the marine layer. the live look from the sales force tower camera into oakland. it's foggy, and once the sunrises, we will see a little more clear conditions headed into this afternoon, and expect upper 50s and lower 60s this afternoon. light winds, and it's kind of the reason why we are seeing the fog. the winds are not there to blow it away. a big change on the way for us this weekend. >> all right, all of you in red on monday. >> gotcha. >> it's going to happen. have a great friday.
