the bay area tonight for the seven farmworkers killed in what is being described as a work shooting rampage in half moon bay. we now know the names of those victims five men and two women, mostly mexican and chinese immigrants. and its victim remains in the hospital tonight but we are also getting our first look at one of their faces. marciano martinez gimenez. katie nielsen is at a growing memorial in downtown half moon bay with his story. >> reporter: this memorial in downtown half moon bay has been growing all afternoon, with people stopping by not only from well-wishers, but also dozens and dozens of bouquets, cards, stuffed animals, notes of support and condolence for the seven people who were killed, including 50-year-old marciano martinez gimenez. according to a fundraising page set up by his brother, marciano had lived in half moon bay for 25 years and worked at concord farms, and was also a

volunteer at the clinic but he is originally from oaxaca, mex raise money to get marciano's body back home to be buried with his parents. the memorial here at the park at the corner of main street and kelly avenue in half moon bay has become a gathering spot for so many, here, as the tightknit community continues to grieve. there has been a steady stream of people dropping off flowers and notes, while others have stopped to pray or take a few quiet moments to reflect on the events of the past few days that have shattered the peace in this small community. >> they provide so much for us. this hits home a little bit. my dad and a lot of uncles have been farmworkers and it kind of sucks that we cannot even be safe at our jobs anymore.

>> reporter: one worker with ties to the agricultural community brought candles, when with each victim's name written on it but she said so many times that migrant workers are invisible, and she wanted to make sure that everyone knew their names, because they worked so hard serving this community, and also, serving the food we eat every day. there is going to be a public vigil planned right here in the park at main and kelly avenue on friday evening at 5:00 p.m., everyone from the community is invited to attend. >> downtown half moon bay has been a place where the community is coming to mourn but the rest of the bay area is sharing in their pain. tonight, a candlelight vigil is being held in oakland. it has been a lot in the past few hours, so, this vigil is here to remember the victims in half moon bay, as well as two other recent mass shootings at a gas station in oakland and monterey park. kelsey has more from wil mission park.

>> reporter: hundreds of people gathered here to honor the victims of the three shootings that have happened in california just over the last few days. you can see just how many people have gathered out here in oakland for this vigil. they are honoring the victims of the shootings in monterey park, have to say, and oakland since this vigil was organized by over 30 of local organizations. they expect to hear from local religious leaders, as well as local politicians , we spoke with organizers . earlier she said she hopes this gives people a chance to mourn. >> how do you mourn when you're not supposed to speak about it? we are creating a space here today,

>> this is not the first time that organizers have hosted a mass shooting, they don't want to hold events like this, but they do it to try to help members of the community here come together and mourn these victims. this is a very hard time for people in the aapi community, as well as the greater east bay community. they hope that by coming together they can share in that grief, but also, start to move forward. >> kelsey, thank you, well said. >> the suspect, 66-year-old zhao made a brief appearance in san mateo county court this afternoon. wilson will walker was there with new details on the investigation and also the suspects passed. >> reporter: seven counts of murder with special circumstances which would mean a conviction would mean life in prison without parole for the death penalty moratorium, or not. zhao only appeared in

court for five minutes, hiding his face behind a piece of paper for most of that time but he only spoke to confirm his name through an interpreter, and he did not enter a plea. district district attorney steve wagstaff handled the hearing himself, and spoke to reporters afterwards. >> i would phrase it in this way. he was cooperative with the sheriff's detectives who did the interview, it was done through and mandarin interpreter, and, my office was watching from outside. >> reporter: wagstaff says his office is diving into the suspects pass, including a 2013 civil case in which a coworker asked for a restraining order, accusing zhao of trying to suffocate him with a pillow and a nice . >> we are trying to get all the precise details. >> reporter: as for the shooting investigation there were several new pieces of

information passed along. >> there was a note inside the car, we are not revealing that at this point. the question was whether this was an evidence of copycat at monterey park and we believe the answer is no to that, not just simply we are not sure, we believe the answer is no. >> reporter: he went on to say his office believes they know a motive for the shooting but they would not divulge that, saying the focus is now on prosecution. >> that is why, from this point on, the sheriff's office will not be making public statements about the case. it will all go for my office and we will do it very limited for the reason that we want to make sure that this man gets a fair trial, that the victims families get justice through a fair trial, and that the case gets tried here in the community in which it was committed. >> reporter: private defenders have been assigned the case but there is no public defender here in san mateo county. private defenders say they need some time to speak with their client. the arraignment is now scheduled for february 16th. >> we will certainly cover that. there is also focus on the two farms where the shooting happened after

governor newsom suggested that some of the farmworkers in that area live in subpar conditions and work well below minimum wage. >> some of you should see where these folks are living. the conditions they are in. living in shipping containers, living in shipping containers. folks getting nine dollars per hour. >> the governor did not call out any forms by name. tara gardens tells us there employees make between $16.50, and $20.00 per hour plus benefits. conquered france is not responded. today, the da said the farm owners are not under criminal investigation, but that the county manager is looking into allegations of poor living conditions. >> they have been out there, they have seen some of the squalor that exists out there, and the answer i believe, the county manager says we know about it and we have to act on it. we have taken steps to

deal with that situation. >> income replacement and hotel rooms will be provided by the county to workers impacted by the shooting. the group farmworker caravan is also trying to help. today, the collected food, clothes, diapers, and other items in san jose and deliver them to families displaced by the shootings and recent flooding spoke >> farmworkers are under duress every single day. they are a shadow community that is vilified sometimes because of their status, and sometimes, people just don't appreciate what these people contribute to our society. there is not a single person in america but is not benefit from the farmworker and everybody eats every single day. that food , even if it is packaged with plastic around it, it has been touched by a farmworker at some point. >> if you would like to help, and so many wants to, we have posted a link to our website at kpix.com.

and urban farm in san jose is facing its own challenges after this months monster storms. coming up, the effort to make sure hundreds of low income families get fed. warm temperatures across the bay area today, considering it is late january all the way up to the middle 70s in santa rosa. most of us topped out in the 60s and around 70 degrees. one more warm day to come tomorrow with some changes through the weekend but we break down all of those changes coming up in the first alert forecast. red and gold fever in full effect at red and gold stadium. how the team and its fans are getting ready for

49er fans out in full force at levi stadium today to grab last-minute gear. they got a chance to check out the red and gold final open practice before the big nfc conference championship against the philadelphia eagles. many fans we spoke to say they are so confident heading into sunday's matchup. >> we winning, you know what i'm saying? we winning.

return to normal conditions across the bay area 50s to around 60 by friday and saturday with clouds passing through as we enter the weekend as well. let's look at the wind, gusto strongest in the north bay, that continues through late morning tomorrow. the strongest guests are generally in the 20 mile-per-hour to 30 mile-per-hour range. below the wind advisory threshold but still a noticeable breeze. then it comes down. still offshore, that allows us to continue to warm up and keep us cloud free then the wind pivots as we go through tomorrow night into early on friday morning , that is when the cool air will start to make its way in. we could see some fog developing along the coast to begin the day on friday. you can really see the pattern overall, the wind arrows are not on here but you can see the influence of that on shore breeze returning. there is the low cloud cover along the coast making its way further inland friday night into saturday morning. passing clouds overhead through the day on saturday. showers dropping

down towards us for the second half of the week. it will be very light, more miss than hit, the first chance of showers we will have seen by that point in over a week and a half. if you want to take advantage of clear skies overhead, if you are an amateur sky watcher, you have the opportunity to put those skills to use. this is for the comet very poorly named. all these letters and numbers to have a meaning in terms of the telescope used to discover it, when it was discovered, this comet with a green tail we have been mentioning over the past few weeks, is visible now through february 10th. it will be closest to earth on monday. next week we will have passing clouds, so you want to avoid city lights, use a telescope or binoculars to see if. the direction to look is to the north northwest. the most important part, binoculars or a telescope and get ready for city lights. right now, temperatures drop off a bit, a mix of 50s and lower 60s, santa rosa still holding onto 67 degrees. we mostly dropped into the 40s by early tomorrow morning, just to be chilly as the spots briefly dipping into

the upper 30s. when we warm up, temperatures in the 60s across the board come into the middle and upper 60s, the santa clara valley , including 67 in san jose. middle 60s through the east bay. 5 to 8 degrees above what is normal for this time of year. all the way up to 70 around santa rosa. upper 60s north of the golden gate up to around 70 for windsor and st. helena as well. enjoy the warmth, because we returned to near average temperatures friday and saturday and then rain chances settling in sunday will be light shower activity. not much to get excited about in terms of measurable rain but it could linger into monday. that system will usher in a much colder air mass. overnight temperatures sunday night might be cold enough for snow level to drop to around 2000 feet. there may be a dusting of snow on the peaks around the bay area as you wake up on monday morning. i will have an update at 11:00. >> paul, thank you. a communit

♪ ♪ control for parents. one bank with tools for both. chase. make more of what's yours. a small urban farm in san jose is recovering from flooding earlier this month. it is not just about the ruined crops. as len ramirez shows us , it is about making sure hundreds of low income families get fed every week. >> reporter: large corporate farms in california were not the only one suffering losses this small urban farm in east san jose, which serves hundreds of local families was also hit hard, and it will be felt by the community for months to come.

>> this is our farm stand. every friday, our farm stand turns into our distribution location. >> reporter: rima lara's runs the produce farm in san jose which grows and distributes organic food and veggie boxes to 300 low income families every week. since the storms, the food in the boxes is mostly coming from other farms. >> it does cost more money to source additional produce from other farms instead of going it here. >> reporter: a lookout that shows why. >> all seven fields were flooded in this timeframe. >> reporter: the nonprofit farm at the intersection of highways 280 and 101 at first welcomed the rain, but it kept coming, and coming, and coming. 8 inches of rain put the fields of plenty and plenty of water. >> it's too bad. >> reporter: this spinach field was wiped out. >> all the spinach was submerged. we cannot pull it

and put it into our produce bucket. >> reporter: the strawberries grown in this section will have to be thrown away, because they were swamped by contaminated floodwaters. other parts of the farm were damaged by the wind . even though these broccoli plants are fine, the quicksand like mud around them makes them hard to reach for workers. >> once you put your feet in the mud, you start to sink. >> reporter: with cooler weather the storm will dry out, but this has set the growing season back two months. growing food from other farms adds to the damage cost estimated at about $15,000. >> the rains were wonderful, but also devastating. >> reporter: mari says they are formulating a plan to make the farm less flood prone in the future but until then, there are mouths to feed. >> it's bad news, the food here is very healthy. >> reporter: estelle and al come here at least twice per week. >> it's a big difference in my life.
