shakeup in the city's embattled police department. >> i have 10 or 11 police chiefs leave oakland . >> one man does not stop the shooting. the city of oakland has to do what is best for the city of oakland. >> reporter: a club that prefers to go clothing free, now cut off. >> i got up tuesday morning and walked down here. it was gone. >> reporter: how major storm damage put a damper on a nudist groups gatherings. as we countdown to the 49ers playoff matchup with the cowboys, meet the super fans who are lighting up there neighborhood in red and gold. this is cbs news bay area with juliette goodrich. >> good evening. we begin with a reckoning for big tech. a new round of layoffs from a silicon valley giant is sending more shutters through the industry. google's parent company plans to cut 12,000 jobs, 6% of the global workforce. the ceo blames the pandemic hiring spree. in an email he wrote

over the past two years, we have seen periods of dramatic growth to match and fuel that growth, we hired for a different economic reality than the one we face today. >> it is pretty easy for most companies to cut 10 or 15% of their employee base right now. >> the belt tightening at google follows recent job cuts in the tech world. microsoft said it is cutting 10,000 jobs or nearly 5% of its workforce. amazon has said it is cutting 18,000 jobs, and the parent company of facebook announced it is laying off 11,000 positions. all right, the technology sector has been hurt by rising interest rates and the slumping global economy. companies are purchasing fewer ads on google's search engine. that contributed to alphabets quarterly profit falling in october. so as you can imagine, a lot of uncertainty for tech workers, especially ones who

depend on their jobs to stay in the country. sean takes a closer look at the potential impact. >> reporter: it still isn't any easier for people in the tech industry to hear about more layoffs from another major player in the business. >> i just think about them when i hear this news. >> reporter: for this man, he is thinking of the people who got the news on friday that they were losing their job. >> they are right now very stressed out and not in a mood to talk about it. >> reporter: he knows families who are on a visa like him depend on the job to stay in the u.s. they have made a life for themselves in the bay area. >> they have done so much relationship care, so much friendships there, they left their homes in the home country. and their kids are growing up here. >> reporter: alan anderson says it is essential to be proactive and start looking for your next job immediately. she knows the feeling first hand because she

has been laid off before and worked in technology. >> i, personally, within the last two weeks have had a number of candidates coming to me , pretty upset, devastated. they weren't expecting this at all. >> reporter: she knows there is low employment overall but still thinks it is harder to find a job in technology right now. >> i would say it's a tough job market. i really would. >> reporter: experts who study the job market carefully say it is more of a correction in the industry. >> the fundamentals are still strong. i have been in the field now for 40+ years. during that time, we had four or five realignments. i would say this is one more realignment in tech. >> reporter: the former edd director points out that recent layoffs are largely the result of over hiring during the pandemic. >> i think we are going to continue to see more layoffs. >> reporter: more layoffs worry workers. for his daughter and other children like her, if a parent can't find more work immediately, they won't be able

to stay here without a green card. >> if i lose a job, i have to go pack everything right away and take her with me. >> reporter: what the layoffs will affect people beyond the bay area, in mountain view, the chamber of commerce tells us it is already anticipating the need for more people to shop local and support small businesses now that they will be getting even less foot traffic from google workers. >> thank you. despite the wave of technology layoffs, the bay area economy is still showing strength. santa clara county's unemployment rate fell to 2% last month. and the region feels the majority of the job gains. the san mateo area added 6400 jobs. the east bay gained more than 3000 jobs. santa clara county added 1800 jobs. all right, the curtain is about to close it yet downtown

berkeley's last movie theater. it's part of a nationwide downsizing by regal cinemas. the regal ua berkeley theater is one of 40 locations set to close nationwide. seven of them are in california. regal is the second-largest cinema chain behind amc. the movie theater model has taken a lot of hits lately. >> it was sort of this crazy, perfect storm if you will, of covid and streaming taking off. covid forced people to be at home. streaming sort of filled the void of going to a movie theater. people were able to watch movies at home. >> there is no word on when the berkeley theater will close. there is already a plan to convert the site into a 17 story apartment building. oakland's mayor plans to answer questions tomorrow on her decision to place the police chief on leave. it comes after a report that criticized the chief for failing to hold a sergeant accountable for misconduct. we are looking at how this turmoil in the force is affecting a city plagued by violence. >> reporter: this family wants to make sure that their parks

don't get overrun by homeless encampments. they want clean and safe streets. many say the latest drama at the police department takes the city away from focusing on the basics. >> i have been on the council for 10 years. i have seen 10 or 11 police chiefs leave oakland. they get fired, then i have to pay for their compensation. >> reporter: some people inside and outside the police department questioned if chief armstrong is gone for good after city leaders placed him on leave. >> it certainly doesn't create any optimism or any motivation for the chief to stay. >> reporter: a report says chief armstrong failed to hold the sergeant accountable. authorities say the sergeant was involved in a hit-and-run collision of a parked car. the sergeant reportedly also fired a gun in an elevator at the police department. >> we make mistakes once in a while. and i hope he stays in oakland as the police chief. >> reporter: the police department has been under

federal oversight for 20 years. oversight was set to end in may. now authorities say it will likely be extended. >> so the attorneys make money, the monitor makes money. the taxpayer cannot afford to hire a police officer. >> we've known each other since we were kids. >> reporter: pastor billy dixon supports the chief. >> i hope he stays because i believe he has more to offer than to lose. >> reporter: he has known chief armstrong for decades. he also worked with him from a professional standpoint on operation cease-fire, the city's crime-fighting strategic plan. >> he is somebody we worked with since he was a sergeant. i

worked with him as a lieutenant and captain. he has never been in any trouble. >> reporter: he says chief armstrong is more than well-liked in the community. he is effective in reducing crime. he says the latest incident won't hurt the effort to stop gun violence. >> no one man stops the progress of what's going towards oakland. >> reporter: the new mayor was flying back from a work conference is in washington, d.c. today. i will talk about how she plans to move forward with chief armstrong. >> thank you. in addition to oakland's mayor and city mission or, they have the power to fire the chief. in a statement, they said armstrong's sidelining is not a disciplinary action. oakland has had a revolving door of police officers. we had 11 over the past 21 years. armstrong was appointed by libby schaaf after and kirkpatrick was fired in february of 2021. a jury found last year she was wrongfully terminated for whistleblowing. an assistant chief will serve as acting police chief for the second time. he led the department for about two weeks in 2020. let's get to some other stories we are following around the bay area. san jose's mayor is expected to lay out his vision for the city. he has a public inauguration ceremony. matt is actually the person

who has been mayor for the last month. he was sworn in in the end of december in a private ceremony. the public's celebration will be at 6:00 p.m. at the center for performing arts downtown. we take you to pacifica now where the search has been called off for a missing san francisco state student. he disappeared yesterday while swimming with friends off esplanade beach. a floral tribute is now growing at the beach . the 22-year-old from santa monica was on the sfs you wrestling team. they scoured the area for hours yesterday but found no sign of him. we are waiting for word on what sparked this house fire in san jose. you can see smoke escaping from the roof and the garage of the burning home on oak bluffs street. we saw a man on the sidewalk being tended to by emts. there are no reports

of any serious injuries. family in brentwood is still working to clean up intensive flood damage. they say they are now back to square one after just finishing some home renovations. the flooring is completely ruined in the family's home. the grandsons brand-new bedroom was destroyed. there is mold crawling up the walls. >> we take it day by day. we might try to contact fema to see if they can help, you know, with the monetary stuff we have to put out. but we are just trying to stay healthy, clean it up as best we can, and go forward. we have been here forever renovating this house. we got it as a fixer-upper. we are back at square one and doing it again. >> the family says they also lost electronics and even the refrigerator. let's take you to castor valley. this road collapse has left a local nudist club totally cut off. this is a private road that leads to the sukhoi and's clothes free club. the site was founded in 1947, giving members a place to enjoy swimming, camping, hiking, and wildlife clothing optional. i was able to talk to some community members who live there year round and are stuck on the property after the road

turned into a massive sinkhole. robbie williams says they have propane, food, water and power. so they are not in dire shape. >> there is a whole big area. we have a parking lot and seven homes. so nobody is trapped. they just can't drive out. nude when possible, close when practical. so today is very practical. nobody, except maybe one or two. we are in the area

back and forth. >> since it is a private road, the residents need to fix it themselves. they say they have gotten estimates from contractors. in the meantime, they are trying to work out how to deal with practical concerns like mail delivery and garbage pickup. the king tide's have returned. this video shows the typical flooding along the embarcadero in san francisco. so keep an eye out if weekend plans include activities near the water. the national weather service says the tides will be about bigger than 7 feet. and it is another night to bundle up. chief meteorologist paul heggen is looking at inland temperatures for the second night in a row. so clothing is practical. >> exactly. and it's always recommended from my point of view. we are 10 degrees below average. we have clear skies. it is pretty when we look at the post sunset view. there is no blanket of cloud cover to hold warmth near ground level. he saw freeze warning for the inland valleys, national weather service has gone into the full warning mode. the issue of freeze warning every time it gets chilly outside. it will be 5 to 10 degrees below average, nowhere close to record territory by tomorrow morning. look at current temperatures. we are dropping down into the 40s with spots clinging to 50 degrees. we have temperatures in the 30s early tomorrow morning. but the weekend overall is looking

in just two days, fans will pack levi's stadium for the playoff game. the chopper is overhead where the stage is set for the showdown. the cowboys are flying high tomorrow. they have a fan base that is so faithful by 100%. jocelyn spoke to a couple who painted their entire neighborhood red and gold. >> i took this and mashed it up a little bit. >> they go all out. the redwood city home shows it. logos, lights, teaming up with -- ♪ >> we have video screens here. these are all moving lights . when you go to a concert, they shine really bright, move around and stuff. >> reporter: it's not just their house. look steps away, they are putting the red in a very important part. >> when it gets dark enough, we turn on a different sequence in

the tower. the bottom part of the tower, the 49er logo comes, it moves around it. >> reporter: it started with christmas decorations. the best holiday gift for these niners fans, the playoffs. >> we thought, well, why don't we start putting a red color and 49er logo somewhere? then it started turning into, they won the playoff game because of us. let's do another. let's do another pep rally. >> reporter: those pep rallies bring the neighborhood together as a team. >> the other thing is, we have a good set of people in the community that get together and also are happy to be together, cheering on the 49ers. our little park and our little community, that is the added bonus that we get. >> they have been fans since they moved from canada about 20 years ago. tailgating has become tradition. >> we have had this now probably about eight years, probably. >> reporter: they will be at the game. they are feeling pretty confident. >> we are close, but we will pull it off. >> 100%.

there are risks. 2 skiers were injured on thursday. the two of them are outside of the ski boundaries. they were lucky. the ski patrol and search and rescue teams found them and got them to a local hospital for treatment. all right. we had to show you this. gosh, i can't look at it enough. check out this bizarre reddish cloud formation. this was taken at sunrise in the turkish city of hrsa. some say it looks like a ufo. of course, we will bring in paul heggen because he can give us the scientific explanation. >> did you see nope last summer? the creature looks a little bit like that. it is this ethereal floating thing in the sky. it's a lenticular cloud. these form down the mountain ranges as it undulate

over the mountain range. it condenses over the cloud, and it drops down. then you don't see the air. it drops in the elevation. it looks weird because of the angle in which the video was taken, and the effects happen at sunrise, you can get them downwind of the sierra. we are not likely to see this, but we are able to marvel at it from afar. we are not boring. we are enjoying a break from the widespread rain chances that will continue into the weekend, dry weather pattern thanks to the area of high pressure, this hill was camped out above four. this gives us offshore wind. it will get a little gusty as we get into the second half of the weekend . we have a few passing high clouds filtering the sunshine. sunday brings us a bit more cloud cover, high and mid-level clouds. it is not blocking it. we have breezy conditions by sunday afternoon, maybe gus in the 10 to 15 miles per hour range. it will have an impact on the 49 game, maybe the kicker, you never know. this will remain low. we are

a lot of fun festivities going on in the bay area to celebrate the lunar new year. dozens of families came out in daly city to celebrate the year of the rabbit which officially starts on sunday. aside from the dragon dance performance inspired by a chinese drum troop, families got to meet raascot and see a chinese calligrapher at work as well as a balloon twister . a lot of smiles this
