moderate rain moving off towards berkeley at 6:37 tonight. and we continued through this evening, that storm front, slowly marches toward the south. by 8:00, it is over napa and nevada, and then also the east bay and the south bay later on tonight. here is the deal that we are looking at, a lot over the next couple of days, we have our second rain chance coming in on friday, that will have more in the way of wind, even a thunder storm chance. sierra snow will stack up over one foot, and the easter weekend will still have some rain chances staying in the forecast. we wrap up all the timing and total coming up later on, but i also wanted to show you how great we are doing for the rainfall season. santa rosa, up 4.46 inches. we have already reached our maximum that we should have so far this season.

we are good to go, there. also surplus in sentences go in san jose. the largest ring to visit in concord running 3.44 inches behind, we can still meet up with that. more details coming up in a little bit. >> jeff, thank you. southbay, now, water leaders are dealing with persona lake expect people visiting the lake in los gatos were surprised today, when they found it nearly dry. look at that. here is marianne favro with why the lake has been drained, and when it should fill back up. >> reporter: i'm standing here in the middle of the lake, the santa clara valley water district drained it for crews to make repairs on the dam, but also means that come easter sunday, you will not be able to get out on paddle boats. >> reporter: this is what persona lake in los gatos usually looks like today a starkly different picture. with a bone dry lake bed. regular visitor, jeanette rasmussen was caught off guard. >> you know, it is the first time in 30 years i have seen it

this low. so i was pretty shocked, to be honest. >> reporter: valley water drained the lake last week, to prepare this dam, built in the 1930s. >> division of safety does inspections with us, so there were some areas of the dam that they said required some sealant, so we are doing that on the concrete and well that, we are also removing a lot of the debris that collect at the bottom of the dam. >> reporter: this is the district smallest reservoir, holding just 463 acre-feet of water at last capacity. it was drained in 2005. with the water gone, you can see debris left behind in the lake, including construction cones. the district says water released is now flowing into the creek downstream, and will be used to recharge percolation ponds. today, district employees were walking the creek bed, searching for invasive plants to try to remove them while water levels are low. it is much easier to find crawdads, some are concerned it

is harder for birds and other wildlife to find food. the district says it purposefully left a small area of water for fish. it is an adjustment, for both wildlife and people. >> it was sad. it was interesting, because we saw some different birds, i think, and it was, you know, it is such a serene place, it is one of my happy places every week. >> reporter: the water district is expected to start releasing water back into the lake, starting next week. in los gatos, marianne favro, nbc bay area news. more than a year since her has had a permanent police chief. today, after months of turmoil, the city finally welcomed its new chief. mayor sheng thao names floyd mitchell, the city's chief last week. today, though, he was formally introduced at a ceremony in city hall. mitchell's most recently led the department in lubbock, texas, before resigning last fall. he says he is committed to proactive policing, data-driven

initiatives, and focusing on the implementation of the city's cease-fire strategies to reduce crime. mitchell says his first 100 days on the job will be spent getting to know his staff, city leadership and the community. along with addressing major safety issues, facing oakland, he also says he wants to change the narrative in the town. >> my approach is high visibility, responsible, proactive policing which is procedurally judged, data- driven, and grounded in strategies that address our most difficult issues. >> reporter: chief mitchell is a strong leader. is a smart crimefighter. he delivers results. and it is what i demand. as your mayor, i demand results. >> she said she picked the 30- year-old foresman veteran because he is a strong leader who will focus on community engagement. opd, it's a tough job, opd has had 12 police chiefs in the past 20 years, and is still

operating under federal oversight. chief mitchell says he is committed to staying in oakland, and working to get out from under the federal monitor. he is excited to start in early may. police and sheriff deputies have been out all day at a crime scene in pacifica, after officers shot and killed a woman, today. this happened at around 8:00 this morning, when officers responded to a man who said that he had been shot to his mother at their apartment on francisco boulevard. police spotted the women, as she was leaving the home to get into her car. a man who lives nearby told us that he was driving his daughter to school, when he saw officers surrounding a white suv. >> they were right in front of us, and the suv started to make a u-turn, while the police had them there, they were trying to get away, i guess. and, five or six shots. and then the suv just drifted into the curb. so, it looked like they had killed the driver.

>> police say the suspect son is in stable condition. investigators have not released any details to the district attorneys office which will be conducting an independent litigation. teenager is recovering in berkeley, 11:00 last night on bonner street, near strawberry street park. the 13-year-old was hit in the thigh after multiple shots were fired on the street. the family tells us it happened as they were walking out of their apartment. frankly, he is expected to be okay. no arrests have been made. to baltimore and the collapse of the francis scott key bridge. crews have recovered the bodies of two people. lost when the cargo ships landed to the bridge yesterday. the victims work instruction workers, filling potholes when the bridge collapsed. others are still missing. rough waters are adding to the task of search and rescue and investigative teams.

the crash scene is now a dangerous mass of twisted metal, jagged boulders of rock and concrete. maryland's governor is in touch with the families of the victims. >> now that we have transitioned, my promise to them is that i will devote every single resource to making sure that you receive closure. >> reporter: along with the search for the remaining victims, authorities continue their probe into how and why the fully loaded container ship slammed into the center support column of that bridge. the ntsb has recovered the ships data recorder and is beginning interviews with crewmembers, and witnesses. bridge engineers say it could take five years or more to rebuild that bridge. meanwhile, authorities believe the remaining four victims who are still missing may be buried in all that trouble. tonight on nightly news, tom llamas speaks with the fbi special agent leaving dive teams , working to recover the victims. he describes the challenges the divers face in that river.

haddon's. we should note, a group once government knew some out of office now. the recall group, called rescue california, got the go-ahead yesterday from the secretary of state to begin gathering signatures. the same group has failed its recall attempt of governor newsom in 2021. they are accusing him of leading the state into a budget deficit, along with other issues like the most is that crime. for the recall to qualify, they will need more than 1.3 million valid signatures by september 3rd. the governor said this is, quote, another wasteful recall campaign. today, people got to spend time with a legend in contra costa county. in richmond, congressman john garamendi teamed up with one of our local rosie derivatives, jean gibson, to show how congress is cementing the legacies of the special women. we told you about gibson before, she left her home in minnesota at the age of 18 and took up a welding job in seattle. >> i went with my friend, out to seattle, and got a job at

the storm system is right now and how that will play out. what we are tracking at this moment is the cold front, and that is just off to the north. so, as the cold front sweeps across, it gives us the needed uplift, here, to create some heavier downpours. it is not going to be the strongest storm of the season, but still some rainfall here tonight to be careful of if you are doing anything over the next few hours. right now, the storm is picking up marin, napa, sonoma county's but we will get you down here, tracking dispatch here just close to the 101 corridor, it will continue on into sonoma, through 7:10 tonight. then there is more rainfall through the peninsula. i think this will hold on by 7:05. the forecast for tonight, the cold front i showed you is slowly moving off towards the south. by 9:00 it is still over the north bay, and also part of the east bay, that is why we think northbay would be on some of the higher end of the totals tonight. ministers to pick up steam by

10:00 it is over the east bay and the peninsula condemned the south bay here at 11:30 at night. and then heading for tomorrow morning, here is the good thing. you get in a car and go off to work tomorrow morning, we should see the worst of that gone. we will start with a mix of some sun, some clouds, chances of a spotty shower. we will hold onto our spotty shower chance for tomorrow afternoon. only trace amounts or a quarter inch for this one, upwards northbay, it will hang out longer tonight, we are looking at about one quarter or one half inch. temperatures down here, 46 in the tri-valley, southdale 48. jackets out again tomorrow morning. 47 for the east bay, and sentences go, the cold start for you at 49 for daytime highs for tomorrow, we cool off, a few more degrees, down here in the south bay, low 60s across san jose and los gatos. over the east bay, 60 in oakland, 62 in concord, chillier of the coastline. 36 in half moon bay.

a present for cisco, 37 in sunset and mission at 59. for the northbay, 36 in ukiah and 58 in sonoma. our next rain chances, beyond this, friday, saturday, sunday, this system in the upper-level will just slowly move down the coastline through this upcoming weekend, to keep, leaving chances but a decent chance of thunderstorms in the mix for us. rainfall totals here through friday, 1/4 to 1/2 inch. we could see some half-inch totals over those adequate mountains, and parts of the south bay. saturday, trace amounts and one quarter inch for lower elevations. higher elevations right there in the yellow, up to about half an inch. and on easter sunday, only trace amounts, so does not look like a total rainout on easter sunday, but be prepared for some rain chances. check out this 10 day forecast next monday, tuesday, wednesday, that is the payoff, 70s coming in with sunny weather. that will be amazing.

lego want a police department in southern california to leave them out of the department of social media posts. the company requested a marietta police down in riverside county refrain, really just stop using images of lego toy heads, as the department has been using them to hide the identities of suspects. you can see it here, the pictures got a lot of attention

last week after the department posted this photo, on facebook, with the statement titled, why the covered faces? it's plain that they are required to cover the phases of suspects due to current state laws restricting the way police show mugshots on photos. they said please don't do that. marietta pd will grant the request and they will no longer use letterheads. >> san mateo county is celebrating a red safety project. the ribbon-cutting was held in the project. the county has $2 million to install traffic signals and crisscross lots. county leaders hope that the changes will make drivers slow down in that area. >> reporter: i'm happy to tell you, that with these carveouts in the way we are able to get people safety across now, it will save lives. >> leaders essay the project was focused on southpark plaza drive, benjamin franklin
