right now at 7:00, a week of close calls and mishaps for united including a plane sliding off a runway. and that wheel that fell from the sky. >> usually don't see fuel emptied out of a plane like that. it is a little uneasy for a little bit. >> we are asking one of our aviation experts what is going

on. and a popular attraction in san francisco back by popular demand. we will take you live to chinatown night market. tonight is the first of the now monthly events. >> you have to wait for the seasons to pass. >> plus it is a documentary about mixing the hardships of business with family. shot at a winery in the santa cruz mountains. we are joined bay a bay area film maker making his debut. with his first film at cinequest. good evening, this is nbc bay area news tonight and i'm jessica aguirre. breaking news. a major crash involving an ac transit bus and a car in oakland. look at that damage. we have been following this story since it happened around 5:00 this afternoon. near 54th avenue and international boulevard. sky ranger overhead. this is what we know. more than 15 firefighters were
7:02 pm
called to the scene. fire crews say that a car hit the bus. look at that damage. it is e tensive. another car was also involved but it is unclear what role the second car played in the crash. at least 14 people hurt. two of them critically. in the past few minutes we learned that includes 11 passengers and the bus driver. we are still working to learn how it happened and we will bring you updates on air and on nbcbayarea.com. we are also following this brush fire in the east bay. this is in antioch about a mile north of the century plaza shopping center. look at the range of this dark smoke and those flames. fire started about three hours ago. we got an update just now from firefighters about a half an hour ago. they said dozens of crews are battling the flames and they are making some progress. the fire now 70% contained. so far, 19 acres burned.
7:03 pm
no structures involved in this. what is going on with united airlines? more maintenance issues for the carrier. just one day after that wheel fell off a plane at sfo, we are learning about another united flight forced to make an emergency landing. this is what we know. flight left sfo this afternoon headed for mexico city. but then, it was forced to make an emergency landing at lax because of what is being called a hydraulics issue. no one hurt. passengers moved to a new plane and they should be on their way to mexico soon. now, it is the second time in two days the united flight leaving sfo has had an emergency landing at lax. yesterday, we showed you this. the wheel of a flight headed to japan fell off shortly after takeoff. that wheel landed in an employee parking lot damaging a couple of cars. luckily, no one was hurt because the wheels were heavy. we spoke to one of the passengers on board. he didn't know anything was wrong until several minutes
7:04 pm
into the flight. >> captain goes on, air traffic control there is an issue. >> we were surprised how calm everyone seemed on the plane, the wheel fell off. we are dumping fuel over. but everyone seemed calm. i felt the crew did awesome. >> it has been a rough week for united. earlier today, passengers in houston had to be evacuated after a plane slid off the runway. right now, it is not clear why that happened. and then earlier in the week, also, in houston, flames started shooting out of the engine of the flight taken off. that was monday. that same day, one of the engines of an sfo bound flight from hawaii failed over the pacific ocean. in both cases, the planes made emergency landings. safely. a lot to take in. let's bring our aviation expert doug rice. let's start with the one that
7:05 pm
had the hydraulic system failure. i don't like the sound of hydraulic system failure. is it as serious as the name sounds? >> it is serious jessica. the aircraft has three different hydraulic systems. they are used to move the flight controls, the flaps. lift the gear. and, put the gear back down in various other systems in the aircraft. that is why there's three. when you have one go out, you declare an emergency and find some place nearby to land. >> but then you have the other ones in the back. you heard me there, doug. i went through a litany of issues with united airlines flights. is this just a confluence of issues for united? do you see a common thread in these or is this just a bad week for united? >> this is just a bad week. there is no common thread.
7:06 pm
different aircraft, different engines. different areas. different maintenance even. each of these was something different. the houston issue where the aircraft left the pavement which is called a runway excursion, that is apparently going to be attributed to one of the pilots coming off the runway at too great a speed. there was some rain or mist that created a slippery surface. and, the aircraft exited the pavement. >> now there are thousands obviously of flights that go up every single day. and today, we are hearing about a bunch of these. how are we when it comes to maintenance of planes? i think a lot of people are a little jittery now after we heard about separate incidents. about what happened with the door plug. so is it that we are so aware of these things happening now because we do air them on the news? how safe is it to fly?
7:07 pm
if you were in your car and an engine light went on or you blew out a tire, obviously, that wouldn't make the news so is it a similar incident that just sometimes stuff happens on the planes? >> well, in the car, you pull over to the side of the road and stop, get a tow truck. in an airplane, you don't have that option. that is why with aircraft, we have all these significant backup systems. and, it is a testament to the aircraft and the flight crews how safe the system is. because we continue to fly thousands of flights a day. and, yet, we are seeing, yes we are seeing a spate of incidents right now that are high visibility. they are not endangering the aircraft and we are not hurting anybody. and really we are not damaging the aircraft long term. >> yeah. so what i hear you saying is that there are so many redundancies in the planes so when one system fails there is a backup system that the crew is trained to be able to handle
7:08 pm
and they just declare these emergency landings. but they do it in the safest way possible and we are seeing all the passengers just taken off one flight. put on another flight. and they check the planes. >> that's correct. and these airplanes are getting doublechecked and triple checked now. because of these incidents and we have the faa involved and in one case, we have the ntsb involved and they will do an investigation check to see what the failure was. was it metal, maintenance. and this is what we have been doing some time with the alaska 737 with the door. we had to do an investigation. they checked every single airplane. and, that took care of the problem. that particular design has been flying for 17 years on 500 airplanes. just something happened one time and they found loose bolts but we didn't have it repeat.
7:09 pm
and we have addressed the situation. >> it is good to know the pilots are ready to go and all these instances, everybody has landed safely and no problems. thank you for being with us. and shedding some light and giving us perspective. no more problems for united. thank you. let's switch gears, a beautiful night tonight. check out this time lapse of the sunset. but more rain is coming back this weekend. meteorologist rob mayeda joins me now and this is not what we want to hear, we would like to see more of today because today was fabulous. >> it was 70 degrees nice in san jose today. warm day. felt like a spring preview. no clouds around. 65 in san francisco. but as jessica mentioned we do have some changes just around the corner and it seems to be our luck over the weekend. we get these chances of showers moving on in. the first one coming in tomorrow morning followed up by probably a stronger weather system for late sunday. so the best chance for
7:10 pm
measurable rainfall tomorrow clearly is north of san francisco. but there is a chance you may see a few isolated showers to the south. the timing on that mid-morning. to about mid afternoon. now as you move forward from sunday evening, you could see a lot more rain associated at that second system. but nothing like we have seen in previous weeks. parts of the north bay could see a half inch of rain coming down late in the weekend. now after that, one more storm system to get through on tuesday, if you like today's weather, the seven day forecast has mid and upper 70s to look forward to moving forward next week. a closer look at the seven day forecast coming up a little later on. >> see you then, thank you, rob, you can track the latest weather conditions any time. super easy. get our nbc bay area app. that qr code takes you right to the weather page. also tonight, it is popular and they are doing it again. the night markets are back in san francisco's chinatown. night markets were originally meant to be a one-time thing to help kick off last year's big apex summit but last month, we

stop a nine millimeter bullet. with the help of a trained firearms instructor they conducted experiments and they found that books can work as body shields. >> we hypothesize it will take four textbooks 1.5 inches to stop a nine millimeter round. but in the end, it surprisingly only took two. >> the school protocols now are to lock the doors, turn the lights off and pray for help to arrive. when in actuality, only 19% of school shootings were stopped by first responders. >> these girls are smart. the girls are competing at this week's contra costa science fair. they will get their results tomorrow after presenting to a panel of judges: what is in the water at lake merritt is starting to turn red and there are fears that a massive fish die-off could happen soon. often times that red water is caused by what is known as red tide. an algae bloom that turns the water red. not always harmful but a

similar bloom killed large numbers of fish less than two years ago. that deadly bloom back in 2022 killed thousands of fish in lake merritt and parts of san francisco bay. the san francisco bay regional water control board is testing the water to see what is causing that water to turn red. one the biggest film festivals in the bay area is underway. tonight, movie makers are actually walking the red carpet. that red carpet happening at the california theater which is also where a lot of the movies are screened. this year's event features 217 different movies including the world premier from the first time film maker. a los gatos native now living in so cal. >> as a child, just didn't make any sense. all this energy put into the work. and put into a product that i had no capability of

understanding or even trying. i just didn't want anything to do with it. >> that documentary is called eden. it focuses on the patterson family who runs the historic mount eden vineyards in saratoga. the film maker spent seven years at the winery on and off following the family as they prepare to pass off the estate to their adult children. you can see it this weekend. joining me now is the director of eden. chris macgillray. good to have you. so when we see this movie, it kind of seems like the perfect silicon valley movie but it is really a universal theme about family and the complexities of family. tell me more about that. >> yeah. i mean i think that is one of the things that we are really proud of with this film. when we started out, we were really heavily focused on being able to tell the story of this

particular winery. and, the way the wine is made. over the years because we spent seven years there, it became this really fascinating story about the family. and you really get to see the evolution, you know, in particular like the son starts, he is 23 at the beginning of the year and goes all the way up to 30 years old. so it really becomes this very relatable story about family dynamics and how complicated it is to be able to set a succession plan in line for small business. >> the human drama is what really captures you. so how did you discover this is the movie, the passion, this is the movie i have to make? >> so, you know again, it was just this really interesting evolution and i kind of equate it to what the evolution of a

wine is like. because you don't necessarily know what a wine is going to turn into when you open up an old vintage of it. sometimes it evolves into something really beautiful. and that, we got really, really lucky that the family story really became this universal story about trying to figure out what is important to you. >> how important is it to you to be debuting your movie there at cinequest? what happens after this? will you be on the circuit? >> yeah, for sure. it is really awesome to me. i grew up in los gatos and volunteered at cinequest when i was a teenager in high school. it was one of my first entry points into thinking about being a film maker and how exciting that is. and from here, yeah, we will basically do the full film
