7:01 am
weather textbooks. yeah, a lot of activity going on the last couple of hours. you can see that white and the purple, those blues. that's where the snow has fallen, particularly on the mt. hamilton area, over on into mount diablo. of course, over in mount tam. let's take it to storm ranger and see where the snow is right now and the rain. mt. hamilton range, if you are driving on the road today, snap a couple pictures and share them with us. we'd be happy to show them on air. along the mount diablo range, we are seeing snow, but i'm seeing range around concord and as you're driving through 680, making your way to san ramone. some light rain and snow over the north bay, as well, as you make your way around the valley. seeing snow on mount tam. share the pictures with us. i'd love to see what the snow and the hail situation is like in your neighborhood. i'll be back to tell you more about this rain, lingering through saturday? who knows? i do. i'll be back in a few.
7:02 am
>> you do indeed. thanks. we begin with breaking news in the east bay. three separate homicides in one night. they happened before 8:00 p.m. on 72nd avenue and international boulevard. then about an hour later, two blocks away, another shooting at 70th and international. police say that victim was killed in front of mike bong shop number two. again, two hours later before 11:00 p.m., a third shooting near 67th and avinal avenues. we are working to learn more about the shootings and the victims and will bring it to you as we learn more. back to the weather. this week, we've seen the winter weather bringing some snow to some unexpected places. parts of the bay area looking like the sierra. some people even skiing in a parking lot in san mateo county. but these beautiful views also came with problems. plenty of crashes and spinouts in napa county as well as in the santa cruz mountains. highway 17 is back open this
7:03 am
morning after being shut down yesterday because of the snow and a big rig jackknife crash. the snow looks beautiful, but thousands of families remain in the dark. crews have been working around the clock to fix that. the fix can't come soon enough. right now, 7,800 pg&e customers remain without power, down significantly from yesterday. most of the outages are in the north bay and the south bay, but it's not just power problems. the snow, fallen trees and slippery roads are big hazards. "today in the bay's" stephanie magaone has more. >> reporter: homes surrounded in snow and darkness. some families are relying on generators or propane heaters to stay warm. >> it's not fun. >> the power is off. >> reporter: leila and her family say the snow blocked off their entire neighborhood and made branches fall from the sky like rain. a massive branch is still lying
7:04 am
on their roof. >> you hear the crack, then the branch is falling down. >> i was terrified. i just, like, jumped. >> reporter: the county and state crews have been working around the clock clearing roads and sanding hazardous zones like highway 17. dozens of families have been stopping for the snow. a situation caltrans calls a hazard. >> cars due to the snowy and icy conditions are going to be unpredictable. please go back to your cars or go back inside or go to a place that is much safer. >> reporter: they're asking everyone to stay home and avoid these slippery roads and the threat of compromised trees. >> as an example, if you are going to travel through the mountains, state routes, bring a flash flashlight, a blanket. bring some sand, salt, kitty litter or anything you might need. think about it as if you were going to tahoe. >> reporter: caltrans says you
7:05 am
can expect to see several lane closures saturday morning. "today in the bay." there is also heavy snow on mount diablo. mount diablo scenic boulevard is still closed this morning due to downed trees and limbs and these icy conditions. that didn't stop a lot of people from pulling out their sleds, snowboards and skis yesterday to enjoy the snow. rangers closed the road, and snowplows forced everyone off the road. but many people hiked and biked up the mountain to get their own little piece of the snow. one alamo family we met with wasn't going to let the road closure stop them. so right after school got out, with the youngest on dad's shoulders there, they hiked 2 miles up the mountain to enjoy the kids' first ever experience in the snow. >> they go really fast. i flipped over. >> it was really fun. sledding was fun, and we did a snowball fight. >> there's nobody up here. it's wide open. but you have to hike up. >> mount diablo park says it'll
7:06 am
continue to assess the conditions and will update the public when the road reopens. as you can imagine, vineyards in the north bay are dealing with major unexpected and rare snow, several inches coming down this week. adding to that, power outages at properties across napa and sonoma. gia vang reports on how this is going to impact the weekend. >> reporter: here's a sight you don't see often. the mountains of wine country covered in snow. >> doesn't look it, but we are going into springtime. you know, the trees are flowering. the daffodils are up. then this comes. >> reporter: up to 10 inches in some places, blanketing vineyards on the county lines of napa and sonoma. 1800 feet elevation, stuart smith of this winery says they're used to several inches of snow every year. this much this weekend -- >> everyone that had visits
7:07 am
scheduled for tomorrow, it's off. we've been out of power since late last night. i don't think we'll get power back until sometime late monday or tuesday. >> reporter: stuart tried reaching his vineyard earlier this morning to check things out. key word, tried. the roads leading to the vineyards are a mess, as you can see. stuart says they're trying to get up this morning, and there were trees just like this one down all over the roads. he said recently, fires have weakened the trees in the area, then compounded by this heavy snow, it didn't help. >> the number of trees that have fallen down or branches that have fallen off is unprecedented. >> reporter: many trees now pushed to the side of spring mountain road along with one car after another level abandoned. president of this winery in st. helena said employees couldn't make it down the mountain safely. >> talked to jason, one of our winemakers. i think he had 8 inches of snow, no power, trees down everywhere. >> reporter: as for the vines up there, the buds haven't broken. vineyards tell me they think
7:08 am
they'll survive, but -- >> our olive trees took a big hit. we have 140-year-old olive trees, and they're tall, 30, 35 feet tall, and they're just a wreck. >> reporter: a wreck that will need a little more tlc as they wait for this winter wonderland to melt. >> it's a nice diversion, you know, and then in a couple days, it's back to the grind. >> reporter: gia vang, "today in the bay." the snow is not just in the bay area. look at this. there is plenty of snow in southern california. this was in wrightwood in san bernardino county. you can see those green signs saying "chains required." people put on their chains there. the elevation is 6,000 feet there. for the first time since 1989, a blizzard warning is in effect for the mountains in ventura and l.a. counties. that's through the day today. coming up in 30 minutes from now, cinthia will have more on the blizzard warning down south

7:15 am
loved ones and their homes. organizers wanted to show solidarity between americans and ukrainians. a ukrainian family who lives in fresno calls the moment they knew the war had started. they told us just how they heard explosions close to their home with their four children in the donetsk region. they knew immediately they needed to leave. the couple knew they'd be targets because, for eight years, they'd ran a non-profit that helped refugees from russian-occupied areas. before their escape, they witnessed many killings. while they're now safe in the u.s., they say their heart and minds are still back home. >> we are thinking about our family members who remain in ukraine, in dangerous areas, and all our thoughts about end of the war and seeing our family members, giving them a hug. >> we have a thousand people
7:16 am
reaching out to us for help, people who have been through a lot, people who have been through russian occupation, people who lost their homes, businesses, everything. it's very difficult to realize that we can't help all of them. >> organization safe passage for ukraine and nova start worked together to get that family to the u.s. safely. the couple says it is now their mission to bring attention to the ukrainian plight and to get more help for refugees. we are now getting a sneak peek of oakland's black joy parade. tomorrow marks the sixth year of the event which honors black heritage and is the largest family-friendly event of its kind in california. yesterday, there was a preview. organizers celebrated black joy's accomplishments and held a ceremony recognizing icons among us. >> we wait too long to celebrate our heros. we have an opportunity to learn from them now, celebrate the now
7:17 am
while they're still with us. >> along with two stages for live music, 200 black-owned vendors will be there. the free event begins tomorrow afternoon at 12:30 at 14th and franklin in downtown oakland. turning back to our storm coverage. the snow wasn't just impacting drivers on the roads. an amtrak train stalled yesterday. a viewer sent us this video. he says he was on the train headed for reno to sacramento when it stalled in the snow near the tahoe forest. passengers made the most of the detour, playing in the snow before the train got moving once again. we have seen incredible images of the snow across the bay area, but there's so much snow, mt. hamilton is actually closed through this weekend. that includes the lick observatory. caltrans says a crew got stuck trying to plow all the snow. our sky ranger caught this worker trying to clear the roadway yesterday, waving to us it looks like, check it out. he even stopped to say hi.
7:18 am
mt. hamilton road is set to open back up by tomorrow. and it was a true snow day in the north bay. these kids are from the cloverdale school. classes were canceled because of the weather. the cold didn't stop their fun. there were snowmen, snowballs and sledding. time now to check in with cinthia pimentel for a look at the microclimate forecast. we remain under this weather alert. this isn't ending yet. >> not quite yet. and not only people and families playing in the snow, i saw some people whip out their skis and head down mount tam. i was like, wow, you don't even have to go to tahoe. it is in your own backyard. >> cool. >> yes, it is going to continue for a few more days as this winter storm rolls through the bay area. san jose live shot, the clouds are still blocking our view of mt. hamilton and that range back there, but once we do start to see them blow away a little bit, we're going to be in for such a treat with that snow-capped mountain over there. storm ranger actively scanning
7:19 am
the skies from san bruno mountain. a lot of this activity happened overnight, so you might be waking up and your neighborhood is pretty clear and ready to go. but we are seeing some heavy pockets of rain along the east bay and parts of the north bay. let's zoom in closer and show you where the rain is right now. moving over livermore and tracing heavier pockets over discovery bay. we also have the rain/snow mix in the picture, where you see the darker blues, kind of purplish over there. we also have some snow over the diablo range in the east bay, as well. in the north bay, where you see these colors of yellow here around fairfield, that might not be exactly snow that starts to fall in your local hills and mountains. that might be hail because the temperatures are pretty close to freezing, allowing some of that to become hail. so if you have any pictures out there and you want to help me help you decide, is it rain, is
7:20 am
it hail, or is it snow, send it to our social media. we have rain over mount helena and santa rosa, windsor. it might be a kind of dry start if you are making your way up to wine country this morning. we're seeing just a few sprinkles over the peninsula, and some snow hanging around the coastline there. we're going to take it over to santa rosa, where that rain will continue. it's been an active weekend up there with that snow in the cloverdale area, around santa rosa. the rain is going to continue just a little bit longer into 8:00 a.m. 9:00 a.m., should see the cloud cover. do bundle up if you are heading out the door. by 1:00, 2:00, we're only going to be in the 50s today. this storm system, as you can see, we're seeing some of that around the bay area, but, really, it is taking all its force and just funneling it straight to los angeles. tapping into some of that atmospheric moisture. but the rain will continue here as well. let's take it hour by hour, help you plan your day around the bay area. we're seeing the rain linger
7:21 am
through 8:00, 9:00, mixing out with the cloud cover. then it is clear to go by 11:30. just make sure you bundle up. we're not done with this rain. it is going to continue as we move on into the day on sunday. we have a very active week ahead as we say good-bye to february and hello to march. we're in for another storm that comes into the bay area on monday, which could bring those rain estimates, just bump them up a little bit more. that's when we could start to get into some trouble with the localized flooding and such. >> geez, again, we'll cross our fingers for that. cinthia, thanks. 7:21 right now. we have much more ahead on "today in the bay." coming up, one man says he used to be intolerably arrogant, but that's not the case anymore. garvin thomas introduces us to this bay area man who now helps this bay area man who now helps others one h

sotyktu for clearer skin. so clearly you. sotyktu. all our bay area proud stories have one thing in common, someone doing something nice for others. but the reasons they do it vary from person to person. "today in the bay's" garvin thomas introduces us to a man who says he is trying to be a good person now because he says he wasn't in the past. >> okay, what are we doing? >> reporter: if there were ever a moment in your life you felt the universe was speaking to you, let's hope the message you heard was nicer than the one joseph got. >> universe, you are intolerably
7:25 am
arrogant. we've got to really teach you how to be happy. >> reporter: now, joseph may have been arrogant, but he was also quite successful. a linguistics expert, joseph ran a lab at stanford for 15 years. it was something he never really enjoyed, though. >> i had no interest. it was just, like, fear. fear was the total motivator. this is all i have. let me put everything, pour everything i have into this because i got nothing else. >> what is the definition of good hair? >> reporter: few years ago, joseph discovered a documentary called "good hair." >> i must have watched that movie 30 times. >> it rekindled in him a love of hair and hair styling he had had as a young boy. >> hair is incredible. >> reporter: so as joseph recently told cosmetology students at skyline college, in his 50s, he left stanford university to enroll in beauty school. >> you tend to part your hair
7:26 am
this way? >> reporter: using hair styling to make him a happier person wasn't enough, joseph felt. he needed to do more. needed to make up for the arrogant person he had been. for the poor way he had treated others in his life. >> thank goodness life isn't fair, because if life were fair, i would be dead or in jail. >> reporter: which explains why, one day, joseph walked into a homeless services organization and volunteered to cut hair. >> i said, "i can start right now. i have my stuff with me." >> reporter: it was the beginning of tent city barbers. >> one, uno. >> reporter: visiting shelters and encampments, joseph offers a haircut to anyone who needs one, sure, but what he really wants to do is give his clients what he calls a mini vacation. >> i want to give them that experience. i want them to get a break from unspeakaby difficult circumstances. >> reporter: and not just giving them a break, but giving himself
7:27 am
a break. instead of beating himself up about the kind of person he used to be, joseph can be the kind of person we all should want to be. >> i know, i know this is making a difference. this is one thing i'm doing right with my life, and i'm going to run with that. >> there you are, sir. >> gracias. >> bless him. garvin thomas with another great story. it is 7:27 right now. we have much more ahead for you on "today in the bay." bay area vineyards under several inches of snow. why you might want to rethink your weekend plans if you are headed to wine country. we go to the east bay. concord seeing that rain linger through about 11:00 this morning, then staying pretty cloudy for the afternoon. we're going to talk about all your mimicroclimate weather and what in the world is going down in los angeles.

7:29 am
7:30 am
good morning. it is saturday, february 25th. a final weekend of the month as we take this gorgeous look outside. the glow through the clouds on a very chilly morning, looking toward san francisco. a little break from the rain and the snow. thank you so much for starting your weekend with us. i'm kira klapper. before we get to our microclimate forecast, we begin with breaking news out of the east bay. oakland police are investigating three homicides in one night. the first happened just before
7:31 am
8:00 p.m. on 72nd avenue at international boulevard. about an hour later, just two blocks away, another shooting at 70th and international. police say the victim in that shooting was killed in front of mike bong shop number two. then again, just before 11:00, two hours later, a third shooting. this one near 62nd and avanel avenues. we're working to learn more about the shootings and victims and will bring it to you as we learn more. all right. we're going to turn back to cinthia pimentel now for a peek at your microclimate forecast. hey, cinthia. >> good morning, kira, everyone. we remain under a weather alert here in the bay area as we see some rain and the low snow levels here in the bay area on this saturday. right now, you can see some of the heavier rain staying north and east this morning, around petaluma, vallejo areas. we're also seeing the areas where you're seeing the dark purple and white, that's the
7:32 am
diablo range, east of san jose. if you are driving over 580 on into tracey, please be careful of that. it'll be a good opportunity for you to have the passenger snap some of those snow-capped mountains. also, if you're driving into the north bay, napa and fairfield, seeing rain over there. pockets of yellow could be hail, so we're not going to call it quite snow just yet until those colors start to turn a little white on into purple. rain as you're making your way out into the coastline, as well. once out of the rain, we'll see cloudy skies. the rain returns friday. it is active across the state. look at the watchespainted on te as we move through the final days of february. a blizzard warning, yes, those red colors that you see along the transverse mountains down in southern california, they're in
7:33 am
for a pretty interesting weekend. >> oh, my gosh, a blizzard warning in southern california? okay, i grew up in southern california. i feel like maybe there was one in the '80s. >> '89, yeah. >> wow. what is that, 34 years? >> how old is taylor swift? >> i have no idea. but it seems pretty unusual. >> it is, right? but i wanted to tell our viewers that any kind of weather is possible here in california if the conditions are right. so we could even get some tornadoes here in the bay area if the conditions line up for that. right now, the blizzard warning in l.a. hasn't been seen in decades like we were talking about, so definitely an interesting weekend as we do get into it. people watching here that want to share that information with their friends, i wanted to break it down a little bit for you. let's define what a blizzard is according to the national weather service. it's defined as falling or blowing snow with winds at or greater than 35 miles an hour. visibility is then reduced to
7:34 am
less than a quarter mile with all of this. all of this has to last for three hours or more. that blizzard warning is in effect until li later on this afternoon. thinking of a weekend get away, you have to turn back. >> don't try it. we were talking about travel conditions, you're saying don't even try it. what about for people who really have to get out today, have to get to work or have to hit the road for some reason? >> yeah, we know a lot of big rigs do some of that travel along that road. i was talking with the chp officer not only heading down through the grapevine but lots of families went to tahoe for ski weekend and are trying to come back. it is all about preparation. doing one thing first, checking the forecast for your area. then doing the quick inspection of your car. so some tips for you, check those tires, the headlights, your windshield wipers, the heating system. if you are stuck in your car and want to crank up the heating
7:35 am
system, make sure the window is cracked a little bit. plan to have the chains and half a tank of gas so you can power the heating system. of course, dress in layers. the sturdy shoes you want. no uggs or crocks are going to cut it, unfortunately. you have to walk around and assess your car out there. i wanted to show you what the conditions are looking like. this is la beck in southern california, right after the grapevine and before you get to pyramid lake. whiteout conditions as you can tell. those road closures might not be lifted as we go into the afternoon today, as those crews try to clear the roads. even if you are trying to find an alternate route around the state, it's going to be a headache. best advice, please stay put. >> oh, my gosh. i can't believe that. >> yeah, that is live. >> i have to drive through there to visit my mom, and i've never seen anything like that. cinthia, thanks for those warnings there. the snow we saw fall in the bay area looks nice, but it's forced thousands of pg&e customers into the dark and the
7:36 am
cold for the last 48 hours. crews have been working around the clock to bring back the power, but as you can imagine for those people, the fix can't come soon enough. as of last night, 7,800 pg&e customers remain without power. that is down significantly from yesterday. most of the outages are in the north bay and then far down in the south bay, but it is not just those power problems. the snow, the fallen trees, the slippery roads are big hazards, as well. off of summit road, this is in santa cruz county, families are relying on generators or propane heaters to stay warm. no estimated power restoration timeline in sight. one family we spoke with said the snow blocked off their entire neighborhood, and it looked like branches were falling from the sky like rain. >> you hear the crack, then the branch is falling down. >> i was terrified. i just, like, jumped. >> glad they're safe. county and state crews have been
7:37 am
working around the clock, as we mentioned. they're asking those driving through the santa cruz mountains to travel as if they are driving to tahoe. bring water, bring food, flashlights and blankets. and if you missed this yesterday, there is heavy snow on mount diablo. mount diablo scenic boulevard is still closed this morning because of downed trees and limbs and those icy conditions. but that didn't stop people from trying to get up there. they were pulling up their sleds, their snowboards and skis yesterday to enjoy the snow. rangers, though, they closed the road, and snowplows were out. many people ended up just parking their cars and hiking and biking up the mountain to get their own little piece of snow. mount diablo state park will continue to assess the conditions and will update the public when the road reopens. look at that happy family. highway 17 is back open this morning after it was shut down for several hours yesterday. this is the main artery, as you
7:38 am
likely know, between san jose and santa cruz. caltrans closed the roads due to downed trees, power lines, snow and a big rig jackknife accident. many vineyards in the north bay are dealing with major headaches after several inches of snow came falling down this week. add to that, they're dealing with power outages. the snow began falling late thursday into friday morning. i mean, it looks beautiful, blanketing those vineyards on the county line of napa and sonoma. at 1,800 feet of elevation, stuart smith of smith winery says they got up to 10 inches of snow in parts of their property. stuart said recent fires weakened the trees in the area, so the wet and heavy snow was able to easily topple them. many were forced to abandon their cars. >> everybody on the mountain that had visitors scheduled for tomorrow, it's off. we've been out of power since
7:39 am
late last night. i don't think we'll get power back until sometime late monday or tuesday. >> gosh. we are crossing our fingers for them. stuart smith went on to say the buds have not broken on his vines just yet. hopefully they won't. he and other vineyard workers tell us they think the grapes will be just fine. we hope so, as well. we saw skiers in woodside yesterday. also, people skiing in the berkeley hills. and we saw some hikers braving the elements. this is at mission peak in fremont. some hikers making the snowy trek to the top. this is usually a 5-hour round trip without snow. and another angle, our skyranger giving us a bird's eye view of those folks who made it to the top of mission peak. i bow down. good for them. as the winter weather continues this weekend, stay with us on-air and online. you can download our free nbc
