i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. we'll get a look at the commute coming up. first the forecast, vianey. you are tracking fog? fog and the temperature change pretty crazy. i will show you how different it is compared to the past 24 hours. focus on santa rosa, sonoma, napa. right now waking up in the 30s. look at the temperature difference compared to the past 24 hours in santa rosa. 29 degrees in napa. it's about 20 degrees. crazy enough, though, the 30s we're seeing right now aren't the coldest of the lows we'll see. we'll see a cold overnight low pattern set up into next week and, of course, i will guide you through that. we have some areas of fog right now popping up in san carlos less than two miles of visibility, fairfield and santa rosa. everywhere else in the south bay we're doing okay. i'll take you through the extended forecast in a bit. mike? the blue line for b.a.r.t., you might have to wait longer.

the niners are determined to make me a sports reporter the way they keep playing and extending their season, but i'm happy to do it. things will be quiet here at levi's stadium this weekend. we know people will be cheering at watch parties and you may hear some cheering in your own house. we nope the niners are leaving for philadelphia today. this is video from last week's game that got them into this game today. fans started to make their way to philadelphia for the matchup that's expected to be the one to watch this weekend. this is a passionate rivalry. the last time the niners and eagles paired off there were a lot of scuffles in the stands. hopefully this time all the action will stay on the field. here is where to watch if you didn't get a ticket and what to watch for. >> our defense is going to have their toughest test of the year as well. when you look at a team that is

or is in possession of a firearm, we can petition a civil court to remove their firearms. >> city attorney david chiu says san diego has led the way and removed hundreds of weapons from potentially dangerous people. >> this has been an emotional week for the aapi community. mourners honored victims in monterey park and half moon bay. organizers are calling for improved mental health care and gun reform. the head of oakland's asian women's shelter says one easy solution would be call centers to address a mental health crisis before it's too late. >> so that people have somewhere to go it someone is showing those signs. because they show the signs, it's not out of the blue almost ever. >> community leaders are hopeful that by coming together in times of joy as well as sorrow, perhaps meaningful gun reform

can be achieved. we've put together a page with information on how to help victims of the tragedy and information on how to make a connection with a counselor if you're struggling and need someone to talk to. head to nbcbayarea.com/supporthmb. 5:07 now. bay area law enforcement will be paying close attention to today's release of body camera footage in memphis after the death of a man in police custody. tyre nichols died shortly after police pulled him over in a traffic stop. police last night and people there gathered in memphis for a vigil. prosecutors say five officers severely beat nichols who died three days later. those officers have since been criminally charged, and all five were fired. state investigators believe charges will stick. >> what happened here does not at all reflect proper policing. this was wrong.

this was criminal. >> police departments around the nation will be bracing for potential protests once that video is released. it's supposed to happen some time around 4:00 p.m. our time. san jose now has a full complement of council seats after they filled a previously vacated seat. arjun batra fills a seat vacated by matt mahan when mahan took over mayoral duties. on tuesday the council chose domingo candelas. 5:08. as we take a look outside this is san francisco right there. the fog is present. vianey arana, will that stick around a lot today? it's not, which is great. we will see that clear out making way for sunshine, a few clouds might linger into the mid morning. we'll enjoy lovely friday.

right there at the bottom, the fog. any fog lingering will clear out. the 24-hour temperature change is impressive in santa rosa. about 29-degree difference compared to yesterday. yesterday woke up with some 50s. a couple 60s around the map today. we're in the 30s in santa rosa. 35 degrees. sonoma, 36. napa, 38. the trend into the afternoon, another mild day ahead. san jose right now 40 degrees. notice at about 10:00, 11:00, we bump up into the 50s. in walnut creek a look at the current temperature, 40 degrees and we start to climb into the 50s. we keep the sunshine around. we've had that high pressure that's certainly been helping to keep us warmer as well especially yesterday. we were above average. 57 degrees by about 11:00 a.m. for dublin and we do have some changes ahead. friday, saturday, lots of sunshine. saturday you'll start to notice cooler weather. then on sunday this frontal

boundary that's pushing through bringing us the return chance of rain and, yes that is sierra snow. this isn't going to be complete widespread rain. more focused on areas and could see lower lower elevation snow at 3,500 feet and as the frontal boundary passes through it will leave behind really cold air especially monday and tuesday. i would not be surprised if we saw freeze warnings go into effect as we could see cold overnight lows in the 20s for the wind sheltered valleys. thursday and friday, we have a low-pressure system that will bring us the possibility of seeing more rain. i talked about that snow for the sierra, let's take a look at the sierra snowpack. the storm system into sunday isn't going to bring as much snow as we saw during the atmospheric river but a couple of inches and we're statewide at

216%. this is very promising. we saw really nice improvement in the drought monitor. we'll take a closer look at how those impacts impact each other. first, i know mike has an update on the crash in san jose. in the south bay let's take you down here to the freeways. a major roadway, you heard of blossom hill near the area where they come together here in san jose. san jose's first fatality as far as traffic crash. you may have to be rerouted. right around the shopping area, that is where we're hearing about police activity. we're told traffic will be impacted. this is between highway 101 and 85 and both freeways are moving fine. remember, b.a.r.t. has an issue with unscheduled maintenance in oakland. that's affecting the blue and

marciano martinez jimenez came to this public memorial to pray for that farm worker murdered earlier this week. marciano played in a local band, you can see him strumming the red congas, or playing them, i should say. he always had a smile, always a positive attitude. a neighbor who took classes with him at a community college said he was always looking to better his farm worker life. here at the memorial his sister-in-law sent a facebook live message to friends and family in the bay area and back home in mexico. >> they can feel empty. my family feel really sad and upset about all of this situation. >> reporter: now my colleague damian trujillo has learned pedro perez, the only person who survived the shooting, underwent

another surgery yesterday at stanford hospital. the mexican consul is working with him and his family to get all the counselor help they need. now an organization called farm worker caravan is holding an emergency food and clothing drive. other shootings in the recent flooding in half moon bay, drop off donations between 10:00 and 4:00 at the catholic charities washington united youth center in san jose where you can also donate online at farmworkercaravan.com. that candlelight vigil tonight here at mac dutra park. they will be speaking in spanish and mandarin, the languages of the people shot and killed, unfortunately, this past monday. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> a lot of sadness there. thank you, bob, for the latest. nbc bay area anchor janelle wang had a jailhouse interview with the half moon bay shooter suspect, 66-year-old chunli

zhao. police say he has been talking to officers since day one but this is the only time he's spoken to a journalist. janelle says in part that he told her he regrets it. >> i said, can we talk about what happened on monday? and he said, yes. i said, sources told our investigative unit that you felt bullied for years, that you were treated poorly. and he said that was true. he said he worked really long hours. >> the district attorney says that he's either seeking life in prison without the possibility of parole or the death penalty. but the decision has not yet been made because this is still the beginning of their investigation. you can hear more about janelle's interview by heading over to our website nbcbayarea.com. we are expected to get a copy of the body camera interview documenting the violent attack at the home of

are set to return to court. investigators say renee hernandez and renee hernandez-santos helped smother her 3-year-old daughter inside a church more than a year ago. police arrested the girl's mother. her case is being handled separately. the trio claimed they did it because they believed the child was possessed by an evil spirit. the chp says despite signs and barricaded roads, a driver managed to crash into a sinkhole. this is in tracy. if you see signs not to drive down a road, don't do it. find a different route. 5:38 for you this morning. we are counting down the days until championship sunday. a live look this morning at lincoln financial field in philadelphia. the niners lead for philly later today. >> it gets loud in there. some of the 49ers faithful are making the trek, others will

to be out and about in big sur. notice the temperatures go from 60s today down into the 40s by sunday for big sur. maybe you're heading up to napa valley. it looks like sunday's storm system is more focused on the south bay so if you're going to be up in napa valley you should be good to go for the earlier hours. turning your attention to the 30s behind that cold front on sunday we're going to see a big cooldown, a cold blast will drop us down potentially into the 20s here but look at south lake tahoe. we go from 20 down to 4 degrees sunday. daytime highs in the 20s and, yes, we expect to see a chance of snow heading into sunday and monday for the sierra. a couple inches. not as intense as we saw during the first two weeks of january. now let's get a check of the roads with mike. tracking that police activity, just off monterey

highway. perhaps closer on cottle. i think great oaks if you need to can get around there, poughkeepsie to the south of the mall there. the activity on monterey highway, 101, 85, it's a pretty good distance. here shows a typical slowing. the pattern is pretty standard there but the note out of the south bay is not standard. the green line canceled for trains out of the berryessa station for b.a.r.t. green line. the orange line still operates. the blue line will be delayed and the orange line will operate. both go through oakland am once you pass through the oakland station you can transfer over to get to the daly city portion of the ride. you will have to transfer. this is all due to unscheduled track maintenance in oakland. drivers are doing just fine. there is a crash, 680 north at 84. that construction in the area has cleared. back to you.

>> you've been saying economic data shows something different. the economic data seems pretty good. it's totally normal to worry about the future in these odd times. we still have a ways to go on inflation but things are getting better not worse. here is the president. >> jobs -- jobs are the higest number in american history and wages are up and growing faster than inflation. inflation has gone down every month and god willing will continue to do that. manufacturing jobs are stronger than any time in the last 40 years. >> the wages are the highest they've ever been. the average american pay steady and to the right. unemployment at a 50-year low but polls show americans still worry which leads to strange headlines like this one.

economy grows even as u.s. braces for recession. former labor and transportation second elaine chao speaks out. chao has asked us not to repeat trump's attacks on her, not the specific words. chao is married to senate leader mitch mcconnell who trump doesn't like. so the attacks often double up. trump makes fun of her ethnicity and name. she says people used to deliberately mispronounce her name when she was girl and, quote, asian americans have worked hard to change that experience for the next generation. he doesn't seem to understand that, which says a whole lot more about him than it ever will about asian americans. we're watching what's happening in washington. a quiet day for once but updated on twitter. i'm scott mcgrew.

take a look at a flashback friday for us. kris sanchez posted a picture of girls back in 2014. it must be amazing to have all these kids look up to you. i mean, how does it make you feel? >> it is very, very special to know that the recognition still lasts now. it's been almost nine years since when i went to the olympics last and so to get to work with kids now i was just working at the national camp, the top young talent coming to perform in this camp and work with skaters like me and other high-profile people and it is amazing to get to give back to the community as well as share tips, tricks and help propel the next generation. >> that's nice. >> a lot of people talk about the artistry on the ice, but people also talk about the

satellite radar you can see a couple of clouds rolling through. high pressure that has been helping our forecast stay dry and also a little bit normal but also warmer than average. so it's california weather but with a little bit of a twist. a few clouds here and there through the afternoon. 65 in san jose. morgan hill, 65 degrees and here is a closer look at some of the headlines. we will say good-bye to january. we have rain chance moving in for sunday, so good news here, we stay dry today and also saturday but then behind that frontal boundary we'll see the winds kick up and also the temperatures begin to dip down and this could trigger some freeze warnings especially for some of those interior valleys heading into monday and tuesday, so just some of the changes we're going to welcome in february, for the first week overall we have a couple of other things to keep you posted about. first, let's check in with mike and traffic. >> vianey, we have a big issue for the rails because the

i know you're tracking some rain. it's the weekend. although we're tracking rain, i want to give you a heads-up and say it's not going to be a washout week. a couple of rain chances here and there. it is feeling colder so you are not imagining this up through the north bay. we have some 30s on the map when you compare these temperatures to yesterday. look at this, 29 degrees colder compared to the last 24 hours in santa rosa. fairfield, 19. down through hayward about ten degrees colder. we don't have that flow anymore. we're not seeing the gusty winds. but into sunday here is a closer look at what to expect. we have the rain chances and a drop in the cold overnight lows. i'll guide you through all of that in a few minutes. first an update on breaking news with mike. a big deal for b.a.r.t. we escalated the situation so b.a.r.t. says there's no service for the green line or the red line and there's no transbay service. system wide
