that's one that really deserves our attention and requires our voices. >> and message of healing and change in half moon bay. the aftermath of last nights mass shooting. we have exclusive information about the suspect tonight. a community in shock as investigators look for evidence. we are hearing from a man who saw the violence unfold. governor newsom making it clear he's tired of doing this over and over again. we will hear his pointed message. good evening, we know this because we've been through this too many times. this is just beginning on a long road to recovery for the families and community members impacted by the shooting. >> today we learned more troubling details about how that massacre unfolded. san mateo county sheriff say all signs point to a workplace garage that turned violent. the suspect, 66-year-old chunli

zhao knew the victims and had worked at both farms targeted. sources tell our investigative unit that chunli zhao accused people of ticking on him for years. >> resources also tell that chunli zhao gunned down to coworkers near a greenhouse on the first farm before going to the trailers area and killing a coworkers wife and shooting to work coworkers, that includes the lone survivor. investigators say chunli zhao then drove to the nearby mushroom farm of cabrillo highway until they married couple he worked with before along with another former coworker. after all of that, he drove to the sheriff substation where he was arrested. >> our team again has spent the day in half moon bay and we begin with nbc's stephanie magallon. she has been speaking with people who are displaced because their homes are now crime scenes. >> reporter: more than 24 hours later the depth of what happening is truly sinking in for friends of the victim. tonight they are sharing their

horrifying moments that they saw their coworkers gunned down. also sharing other interactions. here's nbc bay area is a stephanie magallon. >> reporter: several farmworkers tell me at least two of the victims had children and a wife in mexico. they refer to them as jose and pedro and tonight these farmworkers tell me they are afraid and they are concerned because they don't know what's next for them. miguel recounts the moment he says his 66-year-old coworker opened fire for the first time. miguel her six gunshots. he turned around and says he saw the suspect walked toward the other end of the ranch. he called 911 as two men suffered from gunshot wounds just inches away from him. i turned one of the victims on his side to help them breed says miguel but he passed away. he describes it as a moment of terror not knowing who would be the next target. he and other farmworkers who worked and lived at the crime scene say chunli zhao was friendly toward them.

the little communication was hi and bye. these farmworkers only spoke spanish and he didn't speak much english. miguel says there were several occasions where they would hear zhao and others within his group arguing , but he never got anything like this could happen. dozens of children and their parents now in hotel rooms as authorities investigate the latest mass shooting and the community coming together with meals, supplies, and mental health support. >> we are taking some toys, books, you know, close, blankets , we are taking all those donations and giving them over to the families. >> reporter: an army of volunteers to help those feeling a loss. in half moon bay, stephanie magallon, nbc bay area news. >> stephanie, thank you. tonight the first of many memorial services and vigils in

half moon bay. ministers of many faiths delivering messages of healing and change. nbc bay area's terry mcsweeney joins us from main street in half moon bay with that part of the story. >> earlier you were saying here we go again another mass shooting and again there come the thoughts and prayers. for example here in downtown half moon bay there is a place for the community to grieve and leave flowers or candles. there was a religious service and it was a little bit different. there were prayers but also a call to and gun violence. a call to god for comfort from a community rocked by yesterday's mass shooting. >> how long must i have a pain in my soul and have zorro in my heart all day long? >> reporter: after this interface prayer meeting a call for all of those affected to be

healed including the shooter himself. >> that he may know some respite from his inner turmoil and come to know the ways of peace and compassion. >> reporter: a bell ring out for each of the seven who died and for all victims of gun violence. there was also a specific call for action. >> our biggest problem in our country is gun violence. and while there are many other issues, that's one that really deserves our attention and requires our voices to speak up to put pressure on elected officials. >> reporter: on main street business owners know the people impacted emotionally and financially by the tragedy. >> we actually have farmworkers that work on the farm and their second job is here either washing dishes or doing something, so my heart goes out to all the families. >> for them it's not like

regular normal half moon bay. we didn't see regular customers. >> reporter: a shock to a community that has now been asked to more than pray for change. back out here live in downtown half moon bay. you see the candles and flowers and when you take the rage of the governor and add it to the calling from the pulpit for change to our gun laws, maybe, maybe this time something will change. live in half moon bay, terry mcsweeney, nbc bay area news. >> thank you, terry. the question is why two different farms? why did he target workers at different locations? our investigative unit went digging for a connection between the two farms where the violence broke out. investigative reporter candace winn joins us with what she found out. >> reporter: both farms grow gourmet mushrooms and they are located less than three miles

from each other. one of the businesses says to the two farms are separate entities. the first shooting occurred at the farm on the 12,000 block of san mateo road work law enforcement found five people shot and four fatally. it operates under the name terra garden. they have about 35 employees according to a company spokesperson where the chunli zhao worked full-time as of monday, the day of the shooting. the farm used to be owned by a different company called mountain mushroom farm. according to secretary of state filings obtained by our investigative unit mountain mushroom farm's license was terminated in 2017. it's unclear what happened between 2017 and when california terra garden took over in march of 2022 just last year. when they did workers from mountain mushroom farm started working for california terra garden. one of those workers being zhao. in a statement a spokesperson

said we remain shocked and free stricken over the senseless loss of four of our friends and longtime employees and we pray for the team member in critical condition. we are making grief counseling services available. now the second scene on real highway south, concord farms is where the suspect worked years ago according to the california terra garden spokesperson. he says the two companies do not technically share workers or land or equipment but some workers may be employed at both farms doing similar work. concord farms has a troubled past we found. in 2015 the previous owner was indicted for fraud over underreporting the value of imported gourmet mushrooms. he pled guilty to that and a woman who appears to be his wife owns concord farms. we have called the family of the man to ask about the prior leavell legal troubles but we have not heard back. with the investigative unit,

moon bay. what the -- is going on? >> the governor called out kevin mccarthy for not making a statement but around the same time kevin mccarthy had this to say. see that california has the strictest gun laws there are and apparently that did not work in this situation. i would always withhold to get all the fowhat transpired. these two individuals seem much different. older in age, not understanding why this transpired, the horrendous activity of what they have done. were there signs ahead of time we could've found? >> governor new sims that even with california's laws anyone can bring weapons into the state from other states which is why congress should take action such as restricting the size of magazines and banning assault weapons. >> president biden took time to offer his sympathies to the people of california after a multiple mass shooting.

>> also our hearts are with the people of california. it's been a rough couple days. i just got back home spending time with gavin newson on the floods and devastation that occurred and now on top of that we see what's happening in california. what has happened to the asian american community has been devastating. >> it's unclear if mr. biden will be back in the states to visit the site of either mass shooting in the near future. vice president kamala harris will visit monterey park to honor the victims of that shooting. harris will lay a wreath at the memorial for the 11 people killed there. she will also meet with victims families and the worker who disarmed the gunman. >> we want to remind you the nonprofit farmworker caravan is holding an emergency supply drive for those affected by the shootings in half moon bay. that will be at the san jose woman's club tomorrow from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. they are also looking for volunteers and have set up a gofundme for the victims. we have a special page set up

it is brutal and caught on camera. san francisco police policing a video today that shows a man assaulting a 78-year-old in the soma district. >> sfpd is asking for the public's help to find the suspect. here's nbc bay area's emma goss.

>> reporter: surveillance video shows the brazen assault. watch as a man in a black hooded sweatshirt crosses natoma street in the soma victim and without warning knocks the victim, a 78-year- old man walking with a cane, to the ground. this happened just after 7:30 in the morning of january 8th according to police. the suspect fled on foot. an employee from a nearby business help the injured man back on his feet. he was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. >> when i saw that video i was completely horrified. >> reporter: state senator scott weiner whose district includes san francisco thinks there needs to be a zero tolerance policy for that kind of violence. >> we have seen assault like this on the streets of san francisco particularly directed towards our seniors and it's disgusting and we need to have a zero tolerance policy here in san francisco that if you act like this and if you harm someone like this you will get arrested and prosecuted.

>> reporter: san francisco police are asking the public for help locating the suspect who they describe as a white or hispanic man in his late 30s to early 40s with a short beard. he was last seen wearing the clothes in the video. a black sweatshirt with the word "king" written in white, a white shirt and black and white sneakers. anyone with information relevant to this investigation is asked to call the sfpd tip line or two text a tip to tip411. reporting in san francisco, emma goss, nbc bay area news. investigators are trying to piece together what happened to a deadly shooting in oakland. it happened near mills college. please say about 50 people had gathered during the filming of a music video when gunfire erupted. five people were shot. one died. six others were injured. investors believe the shootings linked to gang violence during

a news conference today the head of the city's cease-fire program said he is concerned the violence will only ramp up. >> the biggest threat to us right now is retaliatory shootings. the groups going back and forth and we will continue to see violence that will stem from this incident. >> police believe there were multiple shooters. so far no one in custody. the 49ers are basking in the glow of the nfl playoffs but they are also dealing with a serious legal issue. a key member of their top-rated defense is charged with domestic violence. san jose police say they were called to the home in santana row of defensive lineman charles amenta hugh. this happened yesterday afternoon for an alleged incident involving his girlfriend. officers say his girlfriend suffered no visible physical injuries and declined medical attention. she did obtain a temporary restraining order. police say he corroborated with police officers and he is now out on bail. the team did not say whether he will play in sunday's nfc

championship game in philadelphia. it could be good news for people trying to make in the bay. san jose could be getting a little bit more affordable this year. golden sachs identified four major cities in the u.s. that they say are set for record drops in home prices. among those, san jose. the cooling market has already dropped prices in san jose 6.5% from its highest point. tech layoffs could lower those prices even more. the other three cities were austin, san diego, and phoenix. let's turn our attention to jeff ranieri are chief meteorologist. we were talking about the rain and now we are talking about the cold. >> reporter: the exact opposite when it comes to the weather pattern we are seeing. chilly temperatures in the morning and sunshine for the afternoon and also mild temperatures and we are seeing all of this from the storm track. this area of high pressure is responsible for pushing that way up towards alaska so we get sunshine back for tomorrow. when picking up a little bit here. or low elevations i don't think

morgan hill. i see lots of sunshine staying with us all the way through friday's forecast. and by this weekend things are going to be changing for us. cloud cover started to increase on saturday and then by saturday night you can see it right here. storm system off to the north. this looks so much different than what we had several weeks ago. this is going to be dropping down from the north, so it's going to have a harvard hard time picking up moisture from the pacific. we will get a chance of rainfall but this does not look like a major rain event for us. so, chance of rain on sunday and some snow for the sierra anything that will linger in monday. totals, drop in the rain bucket compared to what we had over the past several weeks. a quarter to a half inch in the santa cruz mountains and also for the south bay. seven-day forecast, again drive through saturday's forecast. overnight rain gets here on sunday. possibility of thunderstorms and small help as that colder blast of air will be getting here.

republican house speaker kevin mccarthy is shutting down two democratic pics to serve on the house intelligence committee. speaker mccarthy vowed to block east bay congressman eric swalwell and a congressman from southern california adam schiff from keeping their seats on that prestigious committee, but democratically hakeem jeffries reappointed them anyway. speaker mccarthy has the power to reject them. today representative shift, swallowtail and ilhan omar released a statement saying in
