possible motive saying this is a case of workplace violence. the suspect had a beef with his co-workers. it is not a hate crime or domestic terrorism. the suspect is 66-year-old chunley zhao. he shot eight of his co-workers in two different locations. the first at a mushroom farm on 92 at 2:20 in the afternoon. that's where he worked. the other at a nursery off highway 1. a total of seven people were kifld one person injured. five adult men. two women were kill. the eighth victim, a latino, was taken to stanford hospital. he did undergo surgery and we got an update. he is now in stable condition. as for the suspect, he was arrested yesterday afternoon. he was found sitting in his car at the sheriff's substation in half moon bay. the sheriff's office said they

found a semi-automatic gun in his car. legally purchased, legally owned. he had no extensive criminal history. the sheriff's office said there was no warning sign. he was not on their radar. and there is no sign he wa capable of this shooting massacre. governor newsom is in half moon bay. he just wrapped up the news conference an hour ago talking about how difficult and frustrated with the shooting master after shooting massacre. he was just in monterey park yesterday and then flew up here to half moon bay to meet with more victims. he jut spoke and held the news conference. this is what he had to say. >> 39 now of these mass shootings and we're only on day 24 of the new year. looking back at the same notes. right here, right in the corner. it says aurora.

midland. orlando, buffalo, poway, parkland, san jose. sutherland, sandy hook, boulder. i started right in, monterey park. now i have to write in, half moon bay. what the hell is going on? >> reporter: newsom's words, what the hell is going on here? he talked about, there have been nearly 40 shooting massacres just this year and it's only january 24th. we're only 24 days in. just over three and a half weeks into 2023. i want to talk about the victims. there are eight victims. their families, also, witnesses. this happened in the middle of the day as people were working and they are going through a lot. they're deeply traumatized and

affected. our nbc bay area's damian trujillo spent some time with them and he joins us live from the season of one of the locations. the mushroom farm off 92 and he joins us live. it's been a very difficult day for you as well. >> reporter: it really has, janelle. you can imagine the family is trying to make sense of the horror they saw in the crime scene behind me off highway 92. many of them lived in that farm. some are staying in local hotels. many of the witnesses and workers displaced by the tragedy are staying at two half moon bay hotels. not side one lobby, you saw blank stares from people who still appeared to be in shock. no one was willing or able to talk on camera. this man says everything is fine but the anguish was evident.

we then found a man at the sheriff's substation who says his traumatized ex-wife was in one of the rooms when the gunman showed up and shot three of the co-workers before letting her walk away unharmed. >> bad. really bad. scared, nervous. really bad right now. >> reporter: police are finding another difficulty as they work to find the families of five men and two women killed not side. >> as some of these victims were members of our migrant community, this represents a unique challenge when it comes to notifications and identifications of next of kin. >> reporter: that's one of the reasons the consul general of mexico in san francisco was at another location in half moon bay today. >> i just met with the families that were living in the farms. >> reporter: she says three of the victims were mexican immigrants including the soul victim at stanford hospital. we're told they were able to

locate the family of a second victim in mexico. >> reaching out to the families of another deceased. governor newsom was there to meet with families. counsellors were trying to help the witnesses. [ speaking spanish ] >> reporter: she calls herself a community ambassador and is reaching out to the farm worker community, urging them to get help. a community in pain after yet another mass casualty. and the consul general tells me, if any of the families wants the bodies of those deceased here returned to their homeland in mexico, her office will facilitate that process. back to you. >> reporter: damian, i know this must be so hard for you. you grew up on a farm in the migrant community. there are thousands of these workers in the bay area. tens of thousands.

thousands in the half moon bay area that we depend on. i've heard they may not know each other by name but they know of each other, or they see each other around town. how tight-knit is the migrant community? >> reporter: they're like a family. no matter which part of mexico they come from. they're a close-knit family. they're humble, hard working. they come here to get a piece of the american dream. and the mushroom farm, they're picking the mushrooms and pack the mushroom that you will eat on your pizza or your salad. they come here to work. they're not here for a handout. so when it happens to one, it happens to all. >> reporter: for sure. they work so hard and we are so grateful to them all. we are supporting them this evening in the days and weeks ahead. thank you so much. live in half moon bay. as we mentioned earlier, there are political leaders here. governor newsom, city counciembers, they all just

gathered at a news conference this afternoon at one of the community centers. congresswoman eshoo, she represents this district. it includes half moon bay as well as the south bay and peninsula. and she said we have to work together to sto this gun violence. >> we have unfinished business in our country to address gun violence. this workplace violence. and that finished business, until it is our finished business, there will be pain in many communities. >> reporter: congresswoman e-shoo went on to say at the high he was level of government, it is critical in this. we are learning more about the two farms, the crime scenes yesterday. their connection. our investigative reporter has

been following this all afternoon. she joins us live with more. what did you learn today? >> yes. >> reporter: both farms have specialized gourmet mushroom. one of the businesses say the two farms are separate entities, now with a shared tragedy. the first is on the 12,000 block of san mateo road where law enforcement found five people shot. four fatally. it kurnld o'currently operates as a farm with 35 employees according to the spokesperson, where the suspect chunley zhao worked full time. the farm used to be owned by a different company called mountain mushroom farm. according to the filings obtained by our investigative unit, the license was terminated in 2017. it is unclear what happened between 2017 and when california

tierra gardens tack over. when they did, workers from mount mushroom started work here, one of them being zhao. a spokesperson said we remain shocked and grief stricken over the loss of our friends and long-term employees. and we pray for the team member in critical condition. we are making grief counseling avd scene on cabrillo highway south. concord farms is where the suspect worked years ago, according to the california tierra gardens spokesperson. he said they do not technically share workers or land or equipment. but some workers m be employed at both farms dng similar work. concord farms has a troubled past, we found. in 2015, the previous owner was indicted for fraud over underreporting the value of

imported gourmet mushrooms. he pleaded guilty tom. now a woman who appears to be his wife owns concord farms. the investigative unit, we have called the family to call about their prior legal troubles, as well as his time with them. we have not heard back yet. nbc bay area news. >> okay. thank you so much and for all your hard work. we appreciate it. the investigation does continue in half moon bay. the fbi local field office is here assisting the sheriff and local authorities with the investigation that is very active. still ongoing. zhao chunley will be arraigned tomorrow in superior court. he's been booked and he will be charged and arraigned tomorrow. so there are a lot of resources. we're getting a lot of people asking how they can help. there is a plaza here that the city is hosting for people to leave their flowers and tributes, and the city, like i

said, but there are financial resources, go fund me pages. >> i heard when you were on the field today, you came across a family member of one of the shooting victims. can you take a moment and tell us what they said and maybe more important will you, how they seemed? >> it was really difficult. i was at the sheriff's office in redwood city, speaking to one of the public information officers. i did notice the family there and they ended up speaking to me. they told me that the woman i spoke to, she had lost her father. her father is one of the victims in this horrific crime. she didn't want to talk on camera but she said they are still processing. they didn't want to speak to the media but they were there to be interviewed by sheriff's investigators. obviously, this is still an

active investigation. they're trying to figure out what led to the shooting massacre. so they're interviewing family members one by one and offering support. whatever they need. they were there at the sheriff's office today at redwood city. they're still processing. she can't believe what has happened. we'll have a lot more. we'll have to speak to the city manager -- yeah, the city manager just showed up. so in a couple minutes i'll speak with him. he's a half moon bay native. we'll talk to him in a few minutes so please join me for that. we are covering other stories as well. oakland is also dealing with a disturbing shooting. how the city's new mayor is responding tonight. i'm chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. i'll have an update on

janelle wang here in downtown half moon bay. i'm in this plaza set-up in the city where people can bring flowers and gather if they need somebody to talk to and they can mourn together. as i was mentioning, the city is planning a vigil in the coming

days. they have not disclosed yet a time, place or location. as soon as we get that, we'll let you know. i'm joined by the city manager of half moon bay. thank you, matthew, for joining us. i know it is such a difficult 24 hours for you. you are a half moon bay native. now you work for the city. this is your community. how are you holding up? >> it's been tough. a tough 24 hours. you know, we see this on the news. we don't expect this ever to it will this close to home and to have it right here is really devastating. but we're a strong and resilient community and we'll pull through this together. >> reporter: this city's population, only about 12,000. you run into people on the streets. have they called you? what are they saying? >> the support has poured in. it has been incredible. not just locally but throughout the bay area and throughout the country. you know, there are other cities that are dealing with this

trauma themselves. the city manager reached out to me himself this morning. we're all in this together. it's sad that across the country we're in this together. it is appreciated. it does help. and of course, we'll have to look inward to really lift ourselves up. >> you've talked about this migrant community, the farm workers. tell me more about it. it's a big part of the city. >> reporter: yeah. it's aer tooist community. a beach town. we have a long history of agriculture, and for decades now, that, those jobs have been filled by immigrants from south america, and more recently, from china and asia. these are not just migrants that come and go. they're immigrants to our community. they've chosen this to be their home. their families, extended families, even their kids here. you know, we've watched them. this is a community hit hard by the floods. now they're hit hard by this. hit hard by covid.

but they're being seen. we'll support them and show them that we see them as members of our community and we'll support them. >> reporter: and i know you've set up grief relief, and help with the floods and now victims of this community. so moving forward, you guys are just offering support and services? >> yeah. our focus remains on the families directly impacted by the events yesterday. that will expand to the larger farm worker community who i'm sure are scared, confused and will need support. and then our entire community. this is traumatizing to our entire community. there are people everywhere in half moon bay hurting right now and we can't ignore that. we have to reach out, get together, we have to talk, share our feelings and lift each other up. >> reporter: all right, city manager of half moon bay. thank you for your time. we appreciate it and we are behind you all the way. thank you so much.

so it's obviously so difficult for so many locals here. matthew, we talked to debbie who grew up here. she's been a city leader for over 20 years in half moon bay. so it has really hit a lot of the communities hard here. it is a grieving process. they'll turn around and support the community here and pick up the pieces and move. on it could be housing, wages that are lost because they're not working. they do not want them to live back at those farms. housing, hotels they're staying at. so a lot of assistance. mental services. and for people who want to help, we have more resources. i'm going to have a lot more coming up with the investigation in the next half-hour or so. reporting live, back to you. >> thanks. now, several hours after the mass shooting in half moon bay. gun violence hit the streets of oakland. one person died and four others were shot. and will what the police say was the scene of a music video

shoot. joe shows what may happen next. >> reporter: a gas station littered with dozens of shell casings, bore witness to a chaotic night of oakland gun violence. police say on monday evening as many as 50 people have gathered on the 5900 block of macarthur avenue for the filming of a music video when shots rang out. >> while the recording was during, gunfire broke out. >> reporter: bullets flew in every direction, hitting a business and a car. acting police chief garrett allison said five people were struck by gunfire. all transported themselves to area hospitals. >> of those victims, tragically, an 18-year-old man, mr. mario was fatally shot during the incident. >> reporter: investigators believe it was lirnged to gang violence. at a news conference today, the head of the city's cease fire program said he's concerned the violence will only ratchet up.

>> the biggest threat to us is retaliatory shootings. the groups going back and forth and we continue to see violence. >> reporter: on the heels of violence, the oakland mayor expressed frustration that another shooting had come to her city. >> how many more times do we have to look at the front page of our papers, turn on our tv and see that someone else has lost their family, a family member or lost their life? >> reporter: police that they are familiar well the gangs involve. david howard who lost a brother to street violence called on legislators to do more to prevent gun violence. >> this is personal to me. this is about saving the lives of young black and brown men, especially in the city of oakland. >> reporter: nbc bay area news. okay. let's take a breath and talk about the weather.

we've had a break in the rain but maybe there is more on the way? >> that's right. and february continues to hold chances of rain in the forecast. let's get into the micro climate weather right now. what i wanted to show you is the current pattern is the exact opposite of what we went through just several weeks ago with all the record setting rain that brought us the historic rain totals and the damage through the bay area. we have this. it is massive. it is pushing the storm track way toward alaska. for us, we'll stay dry. that wind could bring us some problems from some trees that may have been weakened in the storm. you can see the wind gusts, 20 to 40. by the afternoon, generally looking at winds here between 10

to 25. we could get into gusts at 50 miles per hour. we stay with it wednesday night, thursday morning. and then the wind would start to calm down. the other thing is a cold start. make sure to lower up. have the jacket ready so you're ready to go. the south bay, 39. dipping down to 38 in the east bay and the north bay coming in at 39 degrees. daytime highs for tomorrow, warming up pretty impressively considering the morning temperatures. to 68 in santa rosa. 67 in napa. mid 60s in san jose. how about those chances of rain? it still looks like by saturday night, the clouds increase. then we're looking at a storm sunday into monday. a tenth to half inch over the

santa cruz mountains and south bay. that's sunday and monday. sierra snow from six to about ten inches. so you will see it right here in san francisco. a mix of the 50s and 60s for highs. and that chance of rain coming in on sunday and monday. for the inland valleys, 65 tomorrow down to 50 by next monday. so we're not done with this yet. the second week of february looks even more promising. >> thank you very much. coming up, just days away from playing in the super bowl. a 49er is arrested a 49er is arrested .

arrested on a charge of xhef. san jose police say they were called to the home of the defensive lineman charles omenihu. he was booked in the santa clara county jail for a misdemeanor defensive charge. police say his girlfriend suffered no visible physical injuries and declined medical attention. she did, however, obtain a temporary restraining order. they did not say whether he will play in the nfc championship game against the philadelphia eagles. eagles. we will be right back with
