4:33 pm
connection between them and the suspected killer is that they were co-workers possibly. the coroner is still working to identify all the victims and notify the families. it is so much more difficult, this process, because some of the victims are members of the migrant community. they have family overseas. now, let me tell you more about the suspect and how it all went down. the first shooting happened about 2:20 yesterday afternoon at that mushroom farm and then at that nursery. about two hours later, zhao was arrested in the parking lot at the sheriff's substation in half moon bay. he was sitting in his car. the sheriff said he was looking to turn himself in possibly. the sheriff said they found a semi-automatic handgun inside his car. it was purchased legally and he owns it legally. he had if criminal history and the sheriff's department said he was not known to them. >> i will say there were no specific indicators that would have led us to believe that he

for lost pay. and he continued on by addressing gun violence, saying california has done more for gun safety than any other state. the data says it saves lives, he says. there are outliars and more needs to be done nationally. emonly in america do we see this. sheers some of what he had to say. >> i've got no ideological opposition to someone owning a gun responsibly. but what the hell is wrong with us that we allow these weapons of war and large capacity clips? why have we allowed this to continue? >> it seems there is an irony that exists. the least amongst us in this community are the ones that are the headlines today across the country. and i think around the world. and that is the farm workers.
4:37 pm
>> reporter: earlier today we visited the first shooting scene off highway 92. investigators were coming and going much of th morning. one person talked with deputies and went into the scene. we tried to talk with him but he did not want to speak with us. he was talking with deputies who left the scene. there were investigators going in and out all day. newsom again saying that he does not want to go to another one of these, janelle, and he is certainly hoping that he doesn't have to visit another town and do this all over again for the sake of california. back to you. >> reporter: okay, ian, yes. he traveled to last to the monterey park city. 11 people, nine others injured, and then flew here to half moon bay to more victims lost in shooting massacres.

4:40 pm
total. seven, it appears, were targeted. what are you learning that led to the shooting? the sheriff saying he was mr. zhao was not on their radar. they had no idea something like this would happen. >> right. it appeared that something happened about 30 minutes before the attack. he was in discussions with a co-worker. essentially a supervisor time role to that person. they had dismissed him and they drove away on their bicycle to another part of this 150-acre farm. and he followed them and caught up with them near a greenhouse. that's when the first shooting happened. he targeted the person who he believed had dismissed his concern, and he shot another co-worker there.
