6:00 am
part of your morning. i'm marcus washington. >> and i'm laura garcia. the entire team is here. we'll start out with meteorologist kari hall. we're looking at a wet weekend. yes, we are. it starts to ramp up again. it was nice to have that break yesterday and even in some spots get a little bit of sunshine. we are now tracking another wave of heavy rain that is just off the coast. it starts out light for us. if you head out early you are ahead of the storm that will have bigger impacts as we go into the main morning commute at about 9:00 this morning. but we're also seeing some of the light showers moving through now where you do have to turn on the windshield wipers. not much of an impact yet. driving through the north bay on 101 at times it's raining, other times it does let up a bit. we are seeing some of the heavier rain off the coast and just to our north starting to make its way in. and that will be the case today as we get the waves of heavier rain later this morning, also
6:01 am
some gusty winds. and we're also watching out for the chance of lightning once again going into this afternoon into the evening. also some brief heavy downpous and going into tomorrow another round of some heavier rain as the next storm system comes in at about 8:00 to 9:00. it quickly sweeps on through and back behind that scattered showers and maybe even again some thunderstorms in time for the evening. and then heading into sunday morning a bit of a brief break for the early morning hours but then the next storm system arrives during the afternoon and spreads another round of heavy rain. as of now the commute looks pretty good, mike. calm because of that break in the rain. the railing has been repaired and reopened 84 yesterday but with more rain coming in we'll continue to follow all these
6:02 am
reports very closely. over here at castro valley y, 238. there was a traffic break, some slowing for a pothole, a large pothole to get repaired. crews are heading out and continue to head out to repair whatever has been reported that happened over the last bit of time. highway 92 still closed between highway 95 and highway 1. that cuts off from 280. 280 and highway 1 itself. looking at the green highlighting hitting richmond over in the maze and the north bay. we're marking mill valley where our buddy bob redell is located. that rain came through on the sensors but what's your umbrella status over there? >> reporter: not needing it right now, we're definitely feeling a little bit of the wind. you can see by the sheen in the parking lot behind me we've had some rain but it's been a heavy drizzle at best. we are expecting this to get wetter as the morning goes on. we had that break in the rain
6:03 am
that's when a lot of people took advantage of that dry spell. you had workers out clearing debris, removing downed trees. san carlos is a nonprofit gutted inside and out after those storms rushed in like rivers. one life counseling center served 250 low-income families who come there weekly for mental health services and free groceries, a program now put on hold until march as that center faces over $80,000 in losses and damages. >> we have the food here in storage. everything was flooded. >> people need mental health services desperately and food resources. prices and inflation keeps rising and families are struggling. to feel stuck has been rough on us. >> reporter: in san francisco workers for the city using that break from the rain yesterday to fill as many potholes as possible.
6:04 am
the city spokesperson tells us on average they get about 600 requests a month for potholes but this is not going to be an average month. in the first 11 days of january, they've already received just over 300 requests and they expect the month to end about 20% higher than average, again, because of all this rain. further south down the peninsula, mike, i want to reiterate highway 92 in san mateo still shut down between skyline and pilarcitos creek road down to half moon bay because of a large storm related sinkhole in the westbound direction. reporting live here in mill valley, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> bob, thank you. the irs is signing off on extending the deadline to file taxes for california storm victims. people in every county covered by the federal disaster relief program can qualify including all bay area counties. the new filing deadline will be may 15th. the recent storms are leading to an unusual ripple effect for some bay area animal
6:05 am
shelters. rising water levels are sending some stray animals to higher ground as well and that's adding a greater load to san jose's animal care services. in some cases people hoping to surrender pets are being turned away to allow other animals to get adopted or fostered. the shelter is waiving its adoption fees. a follow-up out of oakland. the current closure at the oakland zoo is being extended into early february. this after a culvert give way leading into the zoo's entrance. the fix taking longer than expected. they said the reopening would happen next week at the earliest. a live look out in san francisco. a beautiful start to this friday morning. we know that rain will make its way back. kari, we've seen rain drops across the bay area. it's been light and hit or miss. it will be coming later today so
6:06 am
if you are out early this morning, you are ahead of the storm. plan on it being a sloppy commute. we'll have a risk of thunderstorms moving in today and starting tomorrow will have a risk of flooding once again as the rain intensifies and we see that continue from saturday through monday. also the potential of landslides will continue and the rivers are already running fast. they will be rising quickly as we go into the week as we get that additional rainfall and winds may gust 20 to 50 miles per hour with possibilities of power outages. you do want to make sure you stay prepared for that as well as the sierra. another 2 to 4 feet of snow coming this weekend. in san jose, also a dry start to the morning, but as we head to the 8:00 to 9:00 hours we'll start to see some spotty showers coming in, but heavier rain moving into the afternoon. all of us seeing the rain eventually at some point today. but as of now making the friday
6:07 am
light commute looking better. you are looking at the golden gate bridge. if you watch, i'm going to hold steady here the camera is moving right here getting blown around a bit more from time to time and a little bit more of glow as rain comes down in the area. you'll have the wet pavement continuing through the north bay as kari has been talking about. the same thing across the bay and highway 37 seeing a little slowing develop out of vallejo. nothing dramatic. highway 4 still at speed. 242, walnut creek interchange. contra costa county looks great. the earlier crash near the metering lights is on the shoulder and hasn't affected the metering lights. they're still off right now. this has affected the drive, though, highway 92. take the long way around here, highway 1 up to sharp park and down to 280 or vice versa, the southbound side of highway 1 is slowing and highway 1 getting hit with wind as folks are

traveling south down to half moon bay. back to you. we are staying on top of storm-related issues for you all weeklong. if you haven't already, make sure to download our free nbc bay area app. we'll send breaking news and weather alerts straight to your phone. 6:08 right now and hoping to avoid the next major meltdown. the holidays were not so nice to stranded southwest flyers. so next on "today in the bay" we'll talk about the big changes coming to the airline to make sure that the same kind of ki os never happens again. roone a price cut that will no doubt make a lot of people happy but could make some people upset. let's take you out to the futures this morning. we got that great inflation number, but, man, wall street is not feeling it. the dow could lose 300 on the open. and making history before ever even hitting the court. we'll explain one sure bet for tonight's warriors game, why it's already a near certain record setter.
6:09 am
6:10 am
6:11 am
right now at 6:11 we take a look at storm ranger. we are seeing some spotty showers to start and then heavier rain off the coast. this will be making its way in 8:00 to 9:00 and starting to see thatctivity picking up, more impact from all of this rain as we get round after round of rain into the weekend. we'll talk more about what's ahead in the forecast coming up.
6:12 am
and what's ahead for 580 here is the dublin grade. taillights moving very smoothly in through the dublin interchange itself. we're showing the build for the commute and some changing conditions kari is talking about, also some nonchanges that will affect your drive as well. well, good morning. a very happy friday to you. wall street in a mood this morning after several banks reported their profits to investors and then in the predictions about business ahead warned they were planning for recession. the markets could get a bit of a haircut today. apple ceo tim cook will take a pay cut, about 40%. he, himself, recommended it. he's going to be okay. he'll make $49 million next year. tesla now a lot less money for a car. tesla cutting prices by as much as 20% on its model 3 and model y. the price cut helps tesla buyers
6:13 am
qualify for the revamped tax breaks as much as $7,500 and the car you're buying is that much cheaper than it was. this is obviously a huge bummer for somebody who just paid full price for a tesla last week or last month. apple went through this, it dropped the price by a lot a few months after its introduction. really angered customers who bought it at full price. glassdoor released best places to work in the united states. three of the top five companies are in the bay area. the other two have offices in the bay area. gainsight, box and nvidia all bay area based. gainsight the best of the best. now its ceo nick mehta describe himself as painfully shy which is hard if you're the ceo. he says he works to overcome it by acting like someone who is not shy at all. here is nick speaking about
6:14 am
leadership on our tem he vision show "press here" back before the pandemic. >> as a kid i was very shy. i actually -- one of the sad facts i ate alone in the computer lab. i didn't have friends. i'm sure i was afraid of people and i'm not sure what happened but at some point i just got some confidence and then i guess i started rolling with it. i see people now intro verities and shy and i respect that and i tell them, including my daughter, by the way, i think you can be whatever you want to be. it's different how i am now. people wouldn't recognize me now. >> that was again from a few years back. you can watch the whole thing online. we'll have a new episode this sunday morning at 9:00. we'll talk about the launch of a new laundry service.
6:15 am
it's terrible timing, in my opinion, because you have cutbacks, people start to get rid of things like -- >> is it a service? >> they come and pick up and and it's automated by robots. we'll see. we'll debate it. >> we'll be watching. i know you will. thanks, scott. 6:14 right now. southwest airlines ceo says all options are on the table to enl sure last month's operations meltdown doesn't happen again. the airline has hired an outside consulting firm to investigate the disruptions that stranded so many passengers during the holidays. southwest has also adopted some interim measures to include software update to automate the scheduling system for flight crews. time to talk about the warriors and they are expected to set a record tonight even before they take the court. >> they'll be taking part in a bit of history. a look at what san antonio's alamodome will look like tonight where the spurs once played. tonight a special event game against the warriors as part of the 50th anniversary season.
6:16 am
this time seating expanded to allow for 64,000 fans breaking the current nba record by 2,000. >> nice they're going to remember the alamodome. >> very good. very good. i got it. >> we're going to move on, though, i think. >> we are. dad joke. >> i'll be right here. standing by. we have some rain coming in again today. we're starting out with most of us heading out the door just needing that reminder to grab the umbrella or rain jacket because it may not be raining as you're stepping out right now. but look at what's off the coast, more widespread rain as well as in parts of the north bay where it's starting to pick up and we'll be seeing more of this rain coming in for today as we get a closer look at the east bay just had a couple of sprinkles move through oakland and now heading toward lafayette as well as over to san ramon. the commute on 680 may get
6:17 am
wetter but you're turning on the windshield wipers and as you continue to drive they may turn off once again. waves of rain starting to pick up in parts of northern sonoma county as well as coastal marin county. but it's all a part of the next system that will be coming in as some colder air also meets up with it and pushes this back to the south. and when we get those cold fronts, there's the possibility of thunderstorms kind of like what we saw on tuesday when we had some areas dealing with small hail, and you had the crashes of thunder and saw the lightning. we are going to see that as a possibility later today. and then this next storm coming in will be heavier starting late tomorrow morning and continuing into the afternoon. so this first wave sweeping on through at about 8:00 to 9:00 and at about 10:00 it's moving through the tri-valley and pushing through parts of the north bay as well as moving into the south bay. but then we start to see more
6:18 am
scattered activity into the rest of the afternoon and once again that possibility that any of these areas could deal with some thunderstorms and then into tonight it does continue. early tomorrow morning is when the next storm system rolls through fairly quickly with gusty winds and really heavy rain, but then it tapers off to scattered showers and then here we are at 4:00 and we see it really lit up around san jose. there's the possibility that we could see thunderstorms, and i know that's exactly when we'll have the 49ers game going on, so we're closely monitoring the forecast and the changes we could see going into the next couple of days. it does look like it gets lighter early on sunday morning, but that's all while most of us will be sleeping and then going into the day it's going to start to pick back up again for the afternoon into sunday evening as well as continuing into monday, which is a holiday. a lot of kids will be staying at home. we're going to see a couple more big rounds of rain as we continue the tally of all of
6:19 am
these atmospheric rivers, round number eight. we're headed to make it to 11 before we get a little bit of a break early next week. notice the pattern as we head to next tuesday. still some rain very close by, but it looks like most of that rain stays just to our north. we may start to see the focus of all of this rain moving away from the bay area which means we could get a break heading to the end of next week. so just going through the weekend it's still going to be a soaker. we're looking at another 2 to 4 inches of rainfall and that's going to cause more impacts with flooding as well as heavy sierra snow that may total anywhere from about 2 feet to possibly 4 feet around kirkwood. and beyond the holiday, some of those icons for the potential of the north bay getting scattered showers. but most of us will get a chance to dry out beyond tuesday as we start to see the change in this
6:20 am
very soggy weather pattern. and, mike, you've seen so far no major impacts through the commute. pretty good right now, kari. you talk about our break but storm tracker and yours goes to 11, right? we're looking over here to san mateo bridge to the western side and the peninsula without any problems, a nice smooth, easy drive for this participate of 92. important to note that's just fine. so is 92 between highway 101 and 280. but from that point you cannot connect all the way over to half moon bay or from half moon bay because that sinkhole still has 92 closed for this section between the upper participate of 35 and over here toward sun studios and pilarcitos creek road. now you have to take highway 1 to go up to sharp park and back down 280. looks like everything is all right right now. we are registering a lot of wind as well. highway 1 over there at
6:21 am
pescadero creek, still one-way traffic control down in that portion of highway 1. up here highway 101 hit with earlier rain, damp roadways, the bay bridge and coming across from the north bay, no major issues. back to you. we like to hear that. 6:21 right now. coming up next, nbc bay area responds. >> reporter: you finally mopped all the unwanted floodwater out of your home, but there's more work to do to prevent a mold colony. i'm consumer

right now at 6:30, another storm taking aim at the bay area. take a look at the green moving right now across the area. a live look at san rafael, one place where the rain is already here, but there's a stronger storm setting right behind this one. we're going to actually have meteorologist kari hall take us through it all tracking that time line for another wet weekend. weather will have an impact. >> the rain will impact not only the wild card playoff game being played tomorrow at levi's but niners and seahawks fans have to brave the rain as well if they

go. rain clouds may give you an opportunity to see the game in person. this is "today in the bay" streaming live on roku, amazon fire, apple tv and online. very good friday morning to you. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. we want to get right to meteorologist kari hall leading our coverage on how things are shaping up today. i can see the rain behind you coming in. for all of us early risers, we're ahead of some of the rain. if you're about to head out the door, it may not be raining where you are but some of it starting to make its way into the north bay as we get a closer look at storm ranger. there were a couple of spotty showers moving off to the east in the east bay but that has since cleared up. it's main lip the north bay right now where we're starting to see the rain picking up in sonoma county moving over to santa rosa within the next few minutes. some of the heavier rain making it here by 8:00 to 9:00. that's when it picks up but that's also when there will be a lot more people up and about. the rest of the day, the chance
6:31 am
of thunderstorms will increase. so we're looking at waves of rain today and then a bigger storm set to move in by tomorrow morning that's going to sweep through with more intense downpours as well as more thunderstorms into tomorrow afternoon. we're tracking all of that as well as the impacts and we'll talk about also what's ahead when we finally get a chance to dry out. mike, you've been watching the bay bridge toll plaza and what's the update? it looks clear in this shot but we do have metering lights activated later. lighter traffic on a friday, a break in the rain. a gradual clearing across the span into san francisco. the green highlighting shows that rain traveling through the area, as kari talked about. trying to get more intense. the north bay got hit with most of it. damp pavement across many portions of contra costa county and also highway 24 coming out cross lafayette and the

hospital and is expected to survive. police say the firearm used was a so-called ghost gun equipped with a high-capacity magazine. wiley is in custody. officers say they never fired any shots during the incident. back to our team coverage of the storm. the bay area will be under a flood watch and that next storm system will drench the bay area. >> from the north bay rivers are already overflowing and running dangerously fast. cinthia pimentel is tracking when the rivers are expected to go beyond the flood stage. it's concerning. it is. we can't underestimate the power of water. we're on storm and river watch in the newsroom as the week takes off with another round of storms. keeping track of the russian river in guerneville and salinas in monterey county. we're taking a look at new video of the salinas river. no roadway footage when this was filmed but you can see the water
6:34 am
very active out there. crews are handling the situation on the roads. take a look at what we captured with nbc sky ranger yesterday, broken levees, water everywhere along highway 68. near freckles the water was 23 feet. as of this morning it was one foot above that at 24. now the national weather service predicts around 11:00 this morning the river could rise to 26.2 feet which then puts the river in that moderate flooding category. the monterey county sherr ef's office has warned residents of potential road closures. be ready for that and we'll keep you updated on air and online if anything happens. over to the north bay now, the russian river in guerneville around 27 feet this morning. flood stage is 32 feet. despite some dips in the water level it's expected to reach 32

there has been a special counsel appointed to the biden documents case. there's usually a joint press conference when there's a big visitor in town. the press will ask about this. here is the attorney general announcing he had appointed that special counsel. >> the extraordinary circumstances here require the appointment of a special counsel for this matter. this appointment underscores for the public the department's commitment to both independence and accountability in particularly sensitive matters, and to making decisions indisputably guided only by the facts and the law. >> now to garland's point the special counsel is largely independent from the justice department. he has to follow the same rules, still reports to the attorney general, but has the power to make decisions independently. note across the top there we've written special counsels because there are two of them. the special counsel investigating the biden
