sonoma home killing an infant inside. thousands waking up in the dark this morning, and the response some leader are taking to help affected residents. you're watching "today in the bay." good thursday morning to you. i am scott mcgrew. marcus washington has the week off. >> i am laura garcia. we went on early this morning at 4:00 to bring you the latest on the storm and the damage overnight. let's start out with meteorologist, kari hall. she's tracking where that storm is going and what is coming our way. >> we will see it breaking up a little more, but that doesn't mean it will be as strong. there will be intense waves of rain coming through for today. we are seeing the storm rolling across the region, and also producing more thunderstorms especially just off to our east. as we zoom into the bay area, much more of us are getting a break and also seeing not as much heavy rain as we did yesterday evening, but any additional rainfall could cause problems and we are seeing a
5:01 am
little rain through parts of the south bay as you are heading out this morning, maybe driving on 101 or 280 coming up from the south bay, you will encounter rain or have to turn on the windshield wipers. we are also seeing some of the showers moving through the north bay and we will see waves of rain. here we are at 8:00 in the morning and we are seeing showers moving through, and there will be off and on rain as we move through today. gradually the rain will taper off and there will be a brief break, but notice the rain returning to the north bay as early as tomorrow afternoon at about 3:00 to 4:00. some of us don't have much time to recover before the next storm comes in. we will see several more storms as we head into the weekend. we will be watching all that. vianey arana, you have been keeping an eye on the road, the richmond and san rafael bridge. >> it's not too bad. seems like folks are choosing to stay off the road and it's 5:00 in the morning.
5:02 am
closer to the 6:00 hour, we usually see the building commute. i am seeing a couple traffic updates for the chp along 280. it appears lanes three and four are blocked because of a downed tree and also a crash nearby. now they issued a sig-alert earlier, but i am not seeing any big delays, so if this is part of your morning commute, you definitely want to look at this and we will make phone calls to see how it's impacted. the westbound bay bridge, 12 minutes. of course, expect the see some of the ponding water near some of the on and off-ramps near 87, right near taylor street, the usual suspects where we see the heavy rain. >> thank you, vianey. we will continue our weather coverage, but there's breaking news overnight in san francisco.
5:03 am
a security guard shot to death, and two young teenagers in custody. a guard was shot on webster street in japan town, and the unidentified guard died at the scene. police say investigators quickly identified and detained two suspects. both juveniles. a 14 and 15-year-old boy. police believe the 15-year-old fired the shot and the 14-year-old was arrested as an alleged accessory. so far police are not indicating what led up to the shooting. back to the storm coverage in the north bay this morning. growing concern as water stages reached the flooding limit. >> there's a history of flooding from the creek there, pete. how is it looking now? >> reporter: good morning. the creek levels are very low at this point. i looked at the latest number and it's about fr feet. this is a
5:04 am
referencing here in san anselmo. because of the history here in 2005, we had downtown san anselmo flooding when the banks were overflowing, and sandbags were in front of businesses and we showed you that in our last report. let's check out some of the pictures from santa rosa. this is a tweet from the city. you see once again the downed trees. that's a result of all that saturated soil we are getting around the bay area, especially up north. you will have the downed trees, and all it takes is some of the strong wind gusts in those areas, so a busy night for those crews cleaning up the downed trees. novato is another area prone to flooding. residents are always on high alert when you get that heavy rain because you could get flooding. in fact, here's what one resident that experienced the flooding in past had to say about these current conditions. >> i will have a garage full of
5:05 am
water and flood mud to clean up, which is not terrible. but the mud that remains after the water subsides, it's not only dirty, but who knows what is in it. >> reporter: let's talk about the russian river. that's where there will be a lot of concern, because heavy rain could cause flooding in the area. on the noaa website, it says it should hit flood stage around sunday morning, and that could change, but right now looks like it will hit the flood stage sunday morning, and the county put in evacuation orders for guerneville, monta rio, and those areas could get flooding if that russian river begins to flood. let's bring you guys back out here to the san anselmo creek. in order to hit flood stage, it
5:06 am
would hit 13 feet. we will bring you updates throughout the morning. pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> thank you. >> over the years that's been such a trouble spot. this storm knocking out power right now for over 80,000 bay area households. this is a look at pg&e's current outage map. they are making progress. last night there were about 99,000 without power. a majority of outages on the peninsula, and you can see the outages are widespread across the bay area, and tweeted at a link where you can check your own neighborhood. the storm innodating some san francisco neighborhoods. 911 operators receiving much higher volumes of calls and some of the calls were less about emergencies and more like repair issues. and then you are reminded, don't
5:07 am
call 911 for that, those with infrastructure concerns should dial 311 instead. >> 911 is extremely busy, and we ask the public that are storm-related issues that are not life safety, please use 311. >> city officials also ask people to remain at home if possible during the worst of the storm to limit the number of accidents, and that appears to have happened. a look at sfo where weather-related issues are likely to lead to more delays and cancelations. we do know the weather yesterday canceled close to 100 flights into and out of sfo. in the meantime, the weather canceled just a handful of flights in san josé and oakland. at each airport, dozens of flights, however, were delayed.
5:08 am
look at this picture. it's either the moon or it's the sierra, but the lens is frozen over. this is a look at the palisades resort in lake tahoe, or at least their camera as ice and snow piles up. wind gusts on the mountain may go above 90 miles per hour. caltrans said road conditions are dangerous. drivers should not travel to tahoe until we get a break between the storms. >> a lot of snow up there and a lot of water down here. in fact, water levels very high for many bay area creeks and reservoirs and with the latest round of rain, evacuation warnings in place for some. >> today we're keeping an eye on the waterways and rising levels. what do you know. >> good morning, scott and laura. the storm is definitely unleashing a lot of water and that's good when we are battling the drought, but dangerous for the nearby communities. before we check on the water levels, we are taking a look
5:09 am
right now. santa clara county issues an evacuation order south of morgan hill through part of gilroy down to duneville. the county is urging people to move to a safer location. back to the water levels. we will start here in the south bay and check on the guadalupe river at alma and expressway. it's inching closer to the minor flooding stage, which is 8 1/2 feet. there's an evacuation order for the unhoused to move out of that area for their safety. we heard pete mention the russian river. look at the trend line. this morning it could reach the minor flooding stage at 32 feet, but look at how it goes towards the weekend. major flooding stage could be seen as early as sunday.
5:10 am
also in the north bay, let's switch over to willowbrook at stoney road. the flood stage is 37 feet, and the flood water has risen over four feet above that number. a lot of creeks and rivers, of course, i will be monitoring as the week goes on. we have a whole bunch of storms coming our way, and at 6:00, the much anticipated drought monitor map. >> it's drought monitor thursday. >> yes, it is. let's bring in kari hall who has a closer look at what we can expect for the next couple of hours. >> yeah, people that live along the rivers needs to make plans for the next few days. we are seeing waves of rain come through, and if you have to drive this morning, you are heading out to work with heavy roadways. let's look at the rain that caused the water levels to raise. in the north bay, two inches of rain from santa rosa to san rafael. in napa, more than an inch and a
5:11 am
quarter. about an inch and a half in antioch and san josé measuring over an inch of rain. more than three inches of rainfall and still adding up in the santa cruz mountains, and the highest total there, over five inches of rainfall. briones, two inches there. this is what is ahead. for the rest of today, we could see another inch of rain around mill valley and san francisco. san josé, maybe half an inch of rain and half an inch in the tri-valley in livermore. we will see these waves of rain coming through and have more updates on that. vianey, you have an update from mass transit. >> yeah, we had downed trees for
5:12 am
mass transit. there's a tree down on the overhead wires and they will not have any service between hillsdale and millbrae until they clear that out. that's pretty much the entire stretch and has the potential to cause delays across the board. monitoring bart and muni, and they are all watching for the possibility of weather delays as they work to clear out issues from yesterday. cal train just tweeted this out and i tweeted it out as well. for now no service between hillsdale and the millbrae location. i will send it back to you. >> you can follow vianey and kari on twitter as they follow the conditions, updating you on the realtime conditions, and the radar is at our website, nbcbayarea.com. as we mentioned, newscast on roku, select live tv on the home screen and go down to channel
5:13 am
133. if you have a samsung tv, it's channel 35. much more storm coverage ahead, and as we go to break we have school closures to tell you about. >> you can look at yr scrn to i your dtrs on the list. it includes cabrillo unified. pes cordero middle and high schools still in session. you can see a full list on our website as well as we continue to update these. if you know of others, please let us know.

5:16 am
right now at 5:16, we are still under a microclimate weather alert. we are going to continue to see the impacts of the storm as we go into today. now lightning strikes developing in parts of the east bay -- or rather in the areas just to our east and also off the coast that will be moving in later today. as far as rain, it's breaking up a bit, but we are still seeing intense rainfall for parts of the south bay as you make your way out the door. sunnyvale and palo alto getting rain right now, but also for the south county down just south of san josé. we will continue to monitor the waves of rain and the impacts coming up in just a few minutes. a big impact to mass transit this morning. cal train is reporting a tree down over their head wires. no service from hillsdale to
5:17 am
millbrae. expect to see service delays throughout the majority of the cal train system. we are also monitoring the vta, muni and bart for potential delays and so far nothing in there. and there's a crash being reported that is blocking some of the lanes. let's take a look at the markets this morning. wall street will lose a little bit off the top. investors looking past the hawkish tone from the minutes of last month's federal reserve meeting. we get the jobs numbers tomorrow. a choppy trading session tomorrow and stocks recovering in the afternoon. the dow was up 130 points. nasdaq and s&p 500 also positive. new this morning, large-scale layoffs at amazon announcing plans to cut 18,000 johns. this had been expected, but that number is way higher than we
5:18 am
first thought. the company cites the uncertain economy and over hiring especially during the pandemic. it will impact amazon's brick and mortar stores. layoffs are about 6% of the total workforce, which is second up to walmart. our entire "today in the bay" team has been tracking conditions across t entire bay area all n long. take a look at this. while our own reporter, gia vang, was covering the weather last night, a tree went down and took out the window in the suv they were driving. they are actually okay, which is good to report. >> trees coming down, and you were talking about one across the tracks and we will get to that in a second. trees are coming down all over because of the saturated ground. >> yeah, we had 90-mile-per-hour
5:19 am
winds at some spots in our hills, so that will definitely bring down trees and cause damage. we are still seeing gusty winds but the wind activity will calm down overall, but we will pick up the chance for thunderstorms throughout today. this is a closer look at the bay area with more waves of rain just off the coast. we're able to track that with our storm ranger parked on san bruno mountain. we are also seeing more activity, and so turn on the windshield wipers and slow down, because this amount of rain, a moderate amount will cause that water to pond on the roadways. going down 101 into the south county, we are seeing some very heavy rain being picked up in spots. in san francisco, there's a bit of a break and we are even seeing the moon right now. this is the kind of activity we will see today. not everybody seeing the same kind of weather at the same time, and the flood potential continues especially for parts
5:20 am
of sonoma county around santa rosa where the creeks have come up quickly. the flood watches and warnings will continue until at least 4:00 today. we are also going to see waves of heavy rain coming through. we may also have thunderstorms with small hail. then once again, watching the creeks and rivers as the winds will possibly gusts 20 to 60 miles per hour downing trees and causing more impacts to power. then for not only today but the next several days, possibly weeks, the landslides potential will continue. we are already starting to see more mudslides happening in the santa cruz mountains. for the sierra, heavy snow continues for today. this has been the big heads up for everyone as we have seen rising water quickly happening. do not drive over where water covers the road. six inches of rainfall can knock you off your feet and carry you away. 12 inches of water can sweep
5:21 am
away a small car. about a foot and a half of water could sweep away a truck or suv. you just don't know how deep the water is. with all the water loading up in the soil, it's starting to absorb some of that and also some is running off. all of the moisture and that motion is going to pull that soil in some of those hilly areas downhill. after multiple days of soaking rainfall, we may have major mudslides happening across the bay area. we're also getting the wind pushing some of the trees, and the wind advisory near the coast and some of the hills, all of these areas highlighted in orange. that continues until at the point 10:00. we have several more storms on the horizon heading into the weekend. another storm moving in late friday into saturday continuing into sunday, and then another wave of heavy rain, a stronger
5:22 am
storm, on monday into tuesday. then possibly another third storm system after that moving in wednesday into thursday. we are also watching out for more rain towards the end of next weekend. sierra snow will continue to add up, and we are seeing it switching back and forth from rain to snow right now but will transition all the way to snow and there could be several feet over the next few days. not many breaks here, and we should see a break inactivity late tonight into tomorrow, and then the north bay will see rain coming in by tomorrow afternoon. parts of the rest of the bay area early on saturday morning. we'll talk more about that. vianey, you have a big update for mass transit. yeah, the impacts of the winds are definitely being felt throughout mass transit. we have been keeping a close eye out, and some of the agencies running at slower speeds because of the rain, and cal train is not running service from the hillsdale station down through
5:23 am
millbrae until they work to clear that out. no estimated time on when this will be back up and running. i retweeted this as well. right now vta is running as normal, but they did, of course, say to monitor for potential weather delays. highway 17 getting messy along southbound 17 before idyllwild road. there was a crash blocking the right-hand shoulder. you can see that here and expect to see delays as they work to clear that. there are also possible light debris, so watch out for that as well. >> thank you. it's 5:23. a finalaro pope benedict xvi. the new details about his final resting

he was 95 years old. the "today" show will have more coverage of today's services at the vatican, and that starts at 7:00 a.m., immediately following "today in the bay." coming up next, the top stories we are following this morning. >> this is probably up there with '19, and a lot of the same scenarios have happened. >> the latest storm knocking down several trees in one case ending in the tragic death of a baby. what first responders are saying and their warning to residents. the winds took down part of this gas station. we look at what might be

5:30 on your thursday morning. good morning. our storm coverage continues this morning. thank you so much for waking up with us. i am laura garcia. >> i am scott mcgrew. marcus washington is taking the week off. this is "today in the bay" streaming on roku, amazon fire and apple tv and online. we need to start with a microclimate weather alert. we have a team of reporters. bob redell live along the
5:31 am
peninsula where ponding is developing, and kari, you have got the forecast. what are we facing today? >> we are seeing it coming in waves. we had the heaviest wave come in yesterday, and there's still scattered showers and the potential of thunderstorms as we recently started to see lightning strikes off the coast. our storm ranger scanning a heavy band off the coast and to our west. we are seeing heavy rain moving through the south bay and that has been off and on and enough to impact your drive this morning. moving from sunnyvale to palo alto, we are seeing showers and heavier rain approaching parts of south san josé as well as the south county. for the tri-valley, we are seeing rain moving back into dublin right there on 580 at the interchange to 680. we are also going to see off and on showers into today.
5:32 am
here we are at 8:30 where we will see heavy rain coming in from another wave moving from napa down through san francisco and off the coast. these individual cells will be popping up anywhere at anytime. we could see thunderstorms developing today and small hail. 11:00 to 12:00, we are seeing much more activity here and then breaks up as we go into the afternoon. gradually the storm will wind down today, but we are still looking at big impacts, because any additional rainfall won't have anywhere to go. we have not had a lot of time to let that water soak in. by this evening we will start to see a chance of drier conditions for much of the bay area. that break from the rain doesn't last that long. we will talk about the next storm coming up in a few minutes. vianey has an update for mass transit. it will be a tough morning because as kari mentioned, we
5:33 am
have the potential for downed trees and that's what we are seeing now. cal train tweeted there's a tree down on the overhead lines. they recently tweeted they will also expect delays throughout the remainder of the morning as they work to safely clear that out. overall we are seeing vta run normal, and muni is telling you to plan extra time for travel, and then highway 17 still seems ton a bit of a mess along southbound 17 before idyllwild road. this is a common stretch for rock slides and debris flow near highway 17. as we continue to see some of the rain coming down, that threat will continue into the early, you know, afternoon hours and carry over into the weekend. plan accordingly.
5:34 am
westbound 80 towards the bay bridge, no impacts now and it's windy so that is something to take into account as you are traveling along all our highways. back over to you. >> thank you. this latest storm taking a tragic turn in the north bay where one death has been confirmed. it happened last night in rural sonoma county where a falling tree smashed into a home killing an infant. it happened on joy road. the baby's parents were uninjured and obviously the incident weighed extremely heavy on first responders. >> anytime you have a situation like this especially with a child, everybody's emotions are a lot higher. a lot of people have to get back in, and some were having distress about it. >> understandable. the tree fell on to a double wide rv.
5:35 am
the child died before the first responders could transport the child to the hospital. the down trees is a big problem across the bay area this morning. this is a tree that toppled into an apartment complex in the peralta area around 35th avenue. no injuries reported here. today in the bay's bob redell is live in redwood city. what are you seeing out there? >> reporter: good morning, scott and laura. we are hearing reports of minor flooding, pockets of flooding throughout the bay area. take this, for example, we're in, as you mentioned, redwood city, and i would call this very minor flooding and it's a large puddle outside a couple homes off the westbound 84 off-ramp through el camino. next door, if you pan to the right, there are no sandbags but it doesn't look like the water got into the house, maybe into the garage but not into the
5:36 am
house. this, by the way, does look like an area that regularly floods when there's heavy rain. i thought i saw a storm drain over there that is trying to suck in some of the water. last night's storm produced wind gusts that took down trees like this large eucalyptus that fell on a three-story building. it's our understanding that the building has been red tagged, which means nobody is allowed inside. and then the flooding downtown oakland, a user named @6storms tweeted this out and gave a shout-out to the workers that are trying to clear the drains to get the water to go . d then pleasant hill, a tree fell. in concord, more trees down that forced closures along a street in concord. crews say that nearby trees all
5:37 am
fell at around the same time blocking traffic. fortunately in all of these instances, as far as we know, nobody was injured. reporting live in redwood city, bob redell for "today in the bay." our team coverage continues with candice nguyen. strong winds are taking its toll on the gas station. just look behind you there. >> reporter: yeah, that's right. take a look at this thing. no, it's not a wall. this is the canopy over the valero gas station here in san francisco on its side toppled over with two gas pumps underneath, crushed. i can see the wires and machinery sticking out there. the structure was possibly already slumped over beforehe storm hit t winds pushed over. larkin and large trees fell around the public library.
5:38 am
it blocked off the road last night and shook up families who were inside a numr of cars that the trees fell on top of. nobody was injured. police were nearby to help those families. this was the scenesorning on upper market. street crews came out to cut up a tree that blocked the roadway and brought a chipper. if it rains again, and it will, san francisco public works says they might have sandbags this morning. they ran out earlier to the frustration of many san francisco residents, and then there was a delivery delay prolonging the wait for the sandbags. they plan to reopen the sandbag distribution operation at 6:00, and that's about in half an hour. back out here live, what will likely not reopen this morning, this valero gas station in san francisco. lots of repairs and checks need
5:39 am
to happen before this is up and running again. good news here. no reports of any injuries. the workers left before the storm got bad and no reports of any gas leaks. live from san francisco, candice nguyen for "today in the bay." >> can you imagine coming back to see that, though. that's destruction. take it easy ts rning, because there cld be a lot of downed lim. >> yeah, early this morning you have to navigate through a lot of stuff to get to work if you are one of the early risers like us. we are seeing waves of rain coming in, and also heavy sierra snow. if you are trying to get to tahoe this weekend, there will be a window between late this evening into the early parts of the day tomorrow where we are going to see maybe the possibility of them clearing the roads and a good travel to the sierra. there will be more rain and snow coming down for the weekend, and so you may want to make sure that you are flexible for when
5:40 am
you can return to the bay area, because sunday may not be a good day. now, if you are heading a little further south to a spot like pass arebels. as we go into saturday afternoon, the rain will be rolling back down to the area as well, and continuing off and on until sunday. napa valley, there's less of a break if you are going north. we will see the rain coming back by tomorrow afternoon, and then it will be off and on throughout the weekend, and even a chance of thunderstorms but at least the temperatures will be mild reaching into the upper 50s and lower 60s. we are talking about more storms coming in even after this one moves out so the impacts will continue. i will time it out for you and help you make plans, and that's coming up in the forecast in a few minutes. vianey has an update on the mass transit. >> we have been talking about the ponding water. highway 17 is rough. we had an earlier crash causing
5:41 am
delays in the southbound lanes. tri-valley also noticing slowing around westbound 84. to 680, about 60 minutes. also some reports of issues there because of ponding water and flooding along some of those local highways and surface streets. cal train, there's no service right now from hillsdale to millbrae because of a tree down on the overhead wires. they are working safely to remove that, and until then don't expect to see service. no eta. they suggest takaking c cal tra. school districts in saw sonoma county are closed because of the storm.
5:42 am
most schools of set to reopen friday. but three districts have yet to announce a reopening date. montgomery elementary and twin hills union school district. >> we have all this on our nbc bay area app as well. yo canu

right now, some parts of the area getting a brief break from the rain and still coming down in the south bay while another wave approaches the north bay. we are monitoring all this and what we can expect for today, and that's coming up in the forecast in a few minutes. a couple impacts to mass transit right now. most agencies are tweeting out a tree is out for cal train. no service between hillsdale and millbrae. they will work to clear the tree out safely. they are asking folks to take sam transas an alternate. happening today, two of the three accused of shooting a toddler are expected in court. so far provided is the backing photo of one of the suspects. the second suspect, trevor green will appear for a warrant

5:47 am
patrol. thank you for joining us. i know it's such a busy time for you. if somebody is about to get out on the roads this morning and brave the storm, what should they know before they leave? >> i think a great point was that we have more weather coming. i walked out of my house this morning with my rain coat on and in.rything, and thereas n i looked up and i could see sky. don't let these breaks deceive you. we still have a lot of water on our roadways. we are still seeing debris on our roadways. still take it easy this morning and just be prepared for this next incoming wave of rain we are expecting. >> we advised drivers not to drive into the big pools of water. you never know how deep they are. but they do stall sometimes as they get in there. what should a driver do after they made this terrible mistake? >> well, the first thing is call 911 and let somebody know where you are. it can -- it only takes about a foot of water to stall out a
5:48 am
vehicle. also depending on if there's any current at all, it can start to move that vehicle pretty easily. the first thing, obviously, is call somebody and let them know where you are as far as emergency services go so we can start to get people out to you. then you have to assess what is safest for you, and if you feel staying in the vehicle is safest and -- it all depends and it's situation to situation. >> fair enough. >> more rain is heading our way, and we showed common areas where it's pooling and ponding. with so much rain people could get surprise areas as well, especially at night. what is your advice if you hit something or start to hydroplane? >> yeah, at night with reduced visibility, you can come up on some of the puddles pretty quickly, and they can surprise you. if you feel your vehicle hit one of those puddles, the worst thing you can do is overreact.
5:49 am
those really jerky steering movements and slamming on the gas or brakes, that's normally what leads to somebody losing control. the best thing you can do is just slow, intentional movements. take your foot off the pedal and help to steer the vehicle when you get control back. >> you never know, downed trees and leaves and branches, you never know what can be in your way, right? >> absolutely. one of our biggest suggestions is give yourself more time to get where you are going. if we know it takes us 30 minutes to get to point a to point b, give yourself extra time and avoid rushing. again, one of the most common causes of crashes in this type of weather is just unsafe speed for the conditions. give yourself time. don't rush. get where you are going safely. >> officer, thank you so much for your advice.

throughout the night viewers across the bay area have been sharing videos of the rain falling in their neighborhoods, many capturing downed trees, flooding, strong winds and lightning even. share your videos with us by tagging nbc bay area on twitter. if you are nice and cozy inside, you will get a chance to take video because there are more storms on the way. >> yeah, it's not the same for everybody. we are also able to give people a heads up before they head out. we are still dealing with the storm, and as we look at the structure of it, the center of the storm well off to the north. the closer you are to that center of circulation, the higher the chance you have of getting more gusty winds and thunderstorms. it's also still drawing in a lot more moisture, so what we are seeing now with some of the dry air being drawn in, there are breaks in between, and there are heavy waves of rain coming in and also still seeing lightning strikes off the coast that will

have the opportunity to make its way into the bay area over the next couple of hours. right now starting to see that activity increasing over parts of sonoma and napa counties once again, and only a couple hours of a break there, but notice how steady it is over san josé. it just keeps redeveloping as it moves through. that's where we get the potential of more flooding, just depending on where the rain kind of stalls out. we see also all of the water draining down into creeks, rivers and streams. that will continue to rise as we go into today. the flood watch continues. we are also monitoring for the potential of more waves of heavy rain, but we are also going to have the chance of small hail for today. the flood watch once again for the bay area as the creeks and rivers and streams will be very dangerous, very quick moving and there's big debris in there that could be carried around as well. as far as a wind gusts, we are under a wind advisory, and we could see gusts reaching 20 to

60 miles per hour, and the landslides potential will continue for the hilly areas and the burn scar areas as well as heavy sierra snow for today. the high wind gusts were really unbelievable yesterday afternoon where we had a 90-mile-per-hour peak wind gusts in marin county near the rock ridge. for the santa cruz mountains, soda springs road had a wind gusts at 78 miles per hour, and all of the wind gusts, 70 to 90-mile-per-hour winds will definitely bring down trees, and around the oakland airport, 59-mile-per-hour gusts. what we have been talking about here with debris flows and mudslides, all of the rainfall starting to be absorbed into the soil and some of it is running off with the heavy rain that comes down with rainfall rates of half an inch of rain or more per hour. all of that motion draws all that down the hill and we could see major mudslides, not only for the coming hours but the

coming days and weeks as that continues to soak into the ground. the wind advisory still in effect through this morning for the coastal areas and the hills. all of these areas shaded in orange are still under a wind advisory, but our hour by hour wind forecast shows the winds will start to relax a little bit for today, and even as we approach noon, we are still seeing winds gusting at 25 to 35 miles per hour. then much lighter for later this evening. there will be a brief break in the activity. by tomorrow afternoon we will start to see rain returning to the north bay. that next storm system arriving saturday into sunday. monday into tuesday, more rain coming in enhanced by an atmospheric river once again. more atmospheric rivers on the way that are going to bring in heavy rainfall. also heavy sierra snow. we could see on top of what we have already measured in the sierra another 34 to possibly 76
