i'm scott mcgrew. >> i'm laura garcia. coming up, we will continue the storm coverage. we are on early this morning bringing the latest on the storm. let's bring in meteorologist kari hall. how long before the storm moves out? >> it is coming in waves. it is becoming more scattered. we will see more breaks as we go into today. we are still dealing with this storm after the brunt moved through yesterday evening. now watching out for the potential of thunderstorms. as we get a closer look, we see the showers are light across san jose. other areas are getting a chance with the heavy rain soak into the ground. we are seeing some lightning strikes off to the east of us as it is moving to the sacramento valley. before the bay area, it is once again lighter compared to what we had yesterday. zooming in to the south bay as well as over to palo alto, there are pockets still of heavy rain that is moving through. we are still under that flood

watch that will continue for today as we are looking at the potential of the water continuing to drain down into the creeks, rivers and streams. we will see the waves of rain coming in once again with breaks between. where we see the rain, there could be small hail possible later todays the center of the storm moves closer. flood watch continues until 4:00. it will be dangerous near the creeks and rivers. winds may gust 20-to-20-to-60 mn hour. the landslide potential will continue not only for today, but the next several days and possibly weeks due to the heavy rain. the heavy sierra snow is still coming down and not letting up just yet. we will take it hour by hour coming up in a few minutes. vianey has a look at the roads. not a lot of folks out. it is 4:00 a.m.

this is the bay bridge. we have spots on the highways with flooding and there has been quick recovery on the major highways. there is some flooding on localized streets and several neighborhoods from the north bay to the south bay. i want to turn attention to 880 and 70 interchange. notice the red at 580. there was a two-lane closure with flooding. that has cleared in both directions. also down through san jose, i noticed 87 with slowing. see the ponding of water near the airport in san jose with ponding water at 87. they coned that off with the capital expressway. i saw stevens creek at 280 with

flooding. you will see the stop and slow spots. be mindful. downed trees happened overnight from san francisco to the peninsula down to the south bay. we will update you on major alerts. for now, a lot of the usual suspects. closed at the niles canyon. this has been closed since new year's eve. we will see more storms on the way. back to you. >> vianey, thank you. we continue with breaking news. a security guard was shot to death with two teenagers now in custody. before midnight, san francisco police confirmed the report that the guard shot on webster street in japan town. it happened at 5:00 p.m. the unidentified guard died at the scene. police say investigators quickly identified and detained two suspects. 14 and 15-year-old boys.

the 15-year-old fired the shots and the 14-year-old arrested as an accessory. turning back to the climate weather alert. drivers will face wet roads this morning. in some cases, ponding. waterways are reaching limits in areas. >> issued a mandatory evacuation order. >> authorities in san jose issued a warning for san jose neighborhoods as spillover threat to nearby homes. some ordered to move to higher ground. some were nervous about what happened in the overnight hours. >> maybe in another four or five hours, maybe it will come up. i'm sure these guys wouldn't be here closing the road if they didn't think it would go above. >> i was concerned when i saw the water coming up. >> the city does have an

emergency evacuation center set up with the red cross. it is located at the seven trees community center. the storm knocking out power for 100,000 bay area households. the majority of outages along the peninsula as you see here with 40,000 customers in the dark. outages are widespread across the bay area. 911 operators received a higher than normal volume of calls. some of the calls were less about emergencies than repair type issues. in a news conference yesterday, the city's office of emergency services reminded everybody those with utility or infrastructure concerns, don't call 911. dial 311. >> 911 is extremely busy right now. we ask the public for storm-related issues that are not life safety, use 311.

that is the fastest way to get the information and dispatch response to the storms. >> people were reminded to stay home if they could during the worst of the storm to limit the number of accidents. a live look at sfo with weather-related issues is likely to lead to cancellations today. we know the weather canceled close to 100 flights in and out of sfo. 350 additional flights were delayed. in the meantime, the weather canceled a handful of flights in san jose and oakland. let's talk about the sierra. seeing a round of harsh weather. that is a live look at palises aids resorts. you see the snow still coming down. lots piling up. winds gusting on the mountain may go above 90 miles per hour. heavy snowfall is expected later

today. caltrans says road conditions are dangerous. avoid traveling to tahoe until we get a break between storms. they have to clear the roads. >> they do. let's bring in meteorologist kari hall. i know we have more storms ahead. are those going to be as severe? it looks like heavy amounts of rain. this is a problem next week. as we get a look at the rain moving through, now the heavy snow is coming down in the sierra. eventually we will see this taper off. we are looking at additional 1 to 2 feet of snow. we are talking about the continuation of the storms coming in. over the next week, we have the potential of getting 34 inches in south lake tahoe. above what we already measured at 76 inches on top of the snow we have in kingville. looking at the hour-by-hour

forecast. what we can expect for today is going come in waves. there will be breaks, but at 7:00, the rain picks up again for most of the north bay. orange and red indicates the extremely heavy rainfall and thunderstorms. we had a few lightning strikes especially near the peninsula. now things are calming down. there will still be a chance of lightning for today and small hail with some breaks between. here is 1:00. activity is becoming a lot liter. any point today, we could see isolated cells popping up and a chance of severe weather and more additional rainfall. we have a bit of a break until tomorrow afternoon. before the north bay, the rain will return and we get a short break before the weekend. we will talk about that coming up. vianey? the majority of flooding is

the story and a tree fell and took out the back window of her suv in castro valley the car was parked. both are okay. they kept on reporting all night. let's check in with the weather and traffic team and see what we have. >> we have more of the storm working through the bay area. you can see the area of low pressure where we saw the swirl yesterday is moving closer and moving to the north of the bay area. still drawing in moisture and producing waves of rain. as we are typically seeing with the weather set up, there is a bit of dry air that comes in as well to give us a break u. it has really intensified for areas to the east with potential for more thunderstorms. lightning east of sacramento and heavy snow in the sierra right now will continue for the next couple hours. as we zoom into the bay area, we

are seeing scattered showers moving through the east bay as well as over to alameda county and san jose. we also have seen it moving to the hills. the risk of flooding still continues today, especially for the north bay and santa rosa with the creeks and rivers running high and fast. there will be the potential that more runoff from the rain we had will continue to cause those waterways to rise. we are also going to see more waves of rain today and small which is typical with the center of storm with the area of low pressure with most energy for thunderstorms. also the creeks and rivers will continue to be monitored. winds will subside, but we have seen winds gusting over 40 miles an hour. weretill looking a risk of downed trees and power outages. the landslide will continue as the heavy sierra snow comes down. looking at the high winds gusts

we had yesterday. really some of the peak winds popping up. goin hour by hour with what to expect. we are going see heavy rain at 7:00 in parts of the north bay anding moving in san francisco. you see pockets of rain that moved through and little bit of sunshine today. definitely the potential to see rainbows. there is not a break for the north bay. look at 3:00. rain returning to the north bay and to santa rosa and clear lake. we will see the rain continue there until it spreads across the rest of the bay year by 11:00 saturday morning. off and on rain into sunday. as we measured a high amount of rainfall, that will come on an already saturated ground. our storm total at 2.25 for santa rosa.

same for san rafell. concord at 1.25. the rain in hayward will continue. palo alto with 1 inch of rain and 1 inch in san francisco. we always warn especially with the rising waterways and water covering the roads that ponding left on the roads. turn around, don't drown. it takes a little bit of water to knock you off your feet and carry you away. also carry away a small car or suv. the wind advisory still in effect. 30 to 40 miles an hour winds. we go hour and hour with the wind forecast and it shows 20 to 30-mile-an-hour winds this morning. we will see conditions improving, but still quite breezy out there. looking ahead to saturday, the

next round of rain continuing into sunday. monday, another wave of ain lasting through tuesday. thursday, one day of a break here as we will see several more storms coming in. here's the look at the seven-day forecast. it is pretty much raining off and on throughout the forecast. i think between late tonight and early tomorrow is going to be our own main break in the rainfall. this weekend looks like a very strong storm that will be coming in and possibly an even stronger one on monday. none of the storms look weak. it will continue to bring in additional rainfall. we will continue to track that, vianey. we hope to have better driving conditions. the bay bridge toll plaza. a couple of vehicles out there. i have been looking at the traffic reports. there is flooding for local

streets and residents and north bay and south bay. there was an early sigalert. these will take a long time before reopening. highway 9 with a mudslide at vernon street. drive times are looking okay.

coffin left st. peter's. the crowd offered soft applause as the coffin was set in place. pope francis presided over the mass. benedict was the first pontiff in 600 years to resign. it is 4:24. you probably heard the term atmospheric river from all of us. as the new year begins, the storms hitting california with devastating consequences. nbc's savannah sellers has a closer look. >> reporter: the weather event and when it is severe, it can be catastrophic. it is not a hurricane or tornado. it is called an atmospheric river. what exactly is that? atmospheric river is a narrow current of wind that carries plumes of moisture stretching for hundreds or thousands of miles high across the sky. kind of like a big floating river. technically, the largest rivers of fresh water on earth.

transporting on average more than double the flow of the amazon river. when the atmospheric river sends tropical moisture over dry land and moisture collides with mountains, like the sierra nevada, the water vapor rises and cools and creates rainfall. models by experts predicted in the 2090s, atmospheric river damage in the west will double or triple. greenhouse gasses are the factor. 58 counties in california are under drought emergency by the state, experts say increased precipitation is only going to make it worse. millions of acres of california forest experienced wildfires in the last two years. leaving the top layer of soil

we get a little break in some of the activity, but the storm does continue to move across the region as we are going to see waves of it coming through. notice the icons popping up, and that's live lightning moving to the east of u we will have a chance of seeing lightning today as we get isolated storms popping up. much less activity right now on storm ranger as we continue to track the storm moving through parts of the east bay with off and on showers.

but we are also under the flood risk as a lot of the runoff from yesterday's heavy rainfall continues to drain into the streams and creeks. looking at some of the high wind gusts we had yesterday, marin county had a wind gust peaking at 90 miles per hour, and santa cruz mountains add a wind gust at 78. even at the oakland airport, we had a 59-mile-per-hour wind st there is a wind advisory in effect for the hills. there will be waves of rain coming through, potentially even thunderstorms and a few more breaks compared to what we had yesterday afternoon. as we go into this evening, we will gradually start to see the storm taper off and we will take a brief break before thet
