this is america this morning. >> good thursday morning everyone i'm andrew dymburt. >> good morning to you i'm rhiannon ally. we want to begin with new details in the baltimore bridge collapse investigation. >> two of the construction workers killed after a cargo ship slammed into the bridge have been recovered. officials last night revealed what they've now learned from the cargo ship's data recorder, but it's still unclear why the ship lost power before the collision. >> 56 containers of hazardous material were on that ship. some of them opened in the crash, including lithium ion batteries, but officials say there is no threat to the public. >> let's get right to abc's perry russom who has the latest from baltimore. perry good morning. >> andrew good morning to you. authorities are calling this investigation a massive undertaking with a data recorder from the ship now revealing a new timeline this morning, new details emerging about the moments before the deadly bridge collapse in baltimore after investigators were able to board the cargo ship, the dolly, and get access to its data recorder. >> it's just utter devastation.

>> the ntsb says it has six hours of information from the data recorder, including the ship's speed and radio communications before the crash. investigators say the recorder captured multiple alarms going off at 124 in the morning. two minutes later, one of the pilots requests help from nearby tugboats at 127, one pilot makes radio contact with authorities regarding a blackout and orders the ship's anchor to be dropped in an attempt to slow down, the dolly slammed into the bridge at 129. >> at 129 and 39 seconds, the pilot reported the bridge down over the vhf radio to the coast guard security camera. >> video shows the disaster unfold. the flashing lights are believed to be the construction crews filling potholes. the camera cuts out as the bridge collapses. emergency workers had started telling the construction workers to get off the bridge, but it was too late for some. divers recovered the bodies of two workers from a red truck submerged in 25ft of water. officials have now paused the search for the four other

missing workers, saying the wreckage in the water makes it too dangerous to continue. >> everybody is focused on the right thing, which is reuniting families with their loved ones. that has to be our main focus. everything else in the investigation in kuwait, the ntsb says the bridge was in satisfactory condition before the collision, but its design was considered fracture critical. >> that's when one point of failure can cause an entire bridge to collapse. there are more than 17,000 fracture critical bridges in the u.s. the preferred method for building bridges today is that there is redundancy. >> building built in weather that's transmitting loads to another member or some sort of structural redundancy. this bridge did not have redundancy. >> the coast guard has also revealed the dolly had routine engine maintenance in the port before the crash, but says there was no prior notification of any problems. and the ntsb says the 23 crew members of the dolly are

still on board and they are cooperating. investigators are planning to speak with both pilots today. rihanna, back to you. >> all right, perry, thank you for that update. we're also learning more about those six construction workers who were on the bridge. many of them came to america looking for a better life. the baltimore bridge collapse is now an international tragedy. still missing and presumed dead is miguel luna, a father of three from el salvador, and maynard sandoval, a father of two from honduras. pilar, fundamental, sandoval's brother, says he was the fundamental pillar of the family. the two victims recovered from the wreckage are identified as alejandro fuentes and dorian cabrera, a man who knows the construction worker says the men were on a break sitting in their parked trucks on the bridge to warm up. when the bridge collapsed. economists compared the collapse to a natural disaster last year. nearly $81 billion worth of foreign cargo passed through the port of baltimore, handling the largest volume of cars and farm

equipment in the country. one supply chain expert calls the port suspension one more disruption in an already stressed system. >> we were concerned about implications that will ripple out beyond the immediate region because of the roles, the excuse me, because of the port's role in our supply chains. >> the port also generates nearly $400 million in local and state revenue every year, and is responsible for more than 15,000 jobs. as for what's next, the coast guard says it will take up to 48 hours to prepare the site for safety, removal of the bridge and ship. but rebuilding the bridge could take years. >> we know that it can't happen overnight, and so we're going to have to manage the impacts in the meantime, we're working to mitigate some of those impacts. >> the families of the victims have asked for privacy. so we are not showing their pictures. but maynor, sandoval's brother, described him as a man who went to the united states to fulfill his dreams. he says his brother took that overnight construction

job after the pandemic to make some extra money. >> a 15 year old girl is among four people killed during a stabbing rampage in rockford, illinois. police say it started with a home invasion by the 22 year old suspect, who is now in custody. five others were injured in the violence, including a mail carrier. authorities have not yet announced a motive, and we turn now to sentencing day for sam bankman-fried, the young man who became a billionaire and then lost it all this morning. the man convicted of orchestrating one of the largest financial frauds in history is preparing to learn his punishment. sam bankman-fried was found guilty of seven charges in connection with the collapse of the cryptocurrency exchange he founded, ftx. >> this kind of fraud, this kind of corruption is as old as time. >> bankman-fried became a billionaire at age 30 by creating that exchange. but after siphoning billions in customer funds from ftx to keep his privately controlled hedge fund afloat, prosecutors today hope to send him to prison for up to 50 years. his lawyers are requesting no more than six years, pointing to this interview with our george

stephanopoulos as proof that bankman-fried has already accepted responsibility. >> but you're ultimately responsible and ultimately, absolutely. >> like i look, i should have been on top of this, and i feel really, really bad and regretful that i wasn't. and a lot of people got hurt. and that's on me. >> his legal team also pointing to ftx bankruptcy estate and how the company expects to fully pay back those customers. but experts say the massive impact of his fraud on the public could decide the number of years or decades he spends behind bars. >> the state is seeking a number of enhancements to his current sentence, and what they're saying is that he violated public trust, which is an enhancement. he affected more than 25 people significantly in a financial way. >> bankman-fried says he plans to appeal his conviction and sentence antiwar sentiment is growing here in the u.s. as israel prepares for a possible new ground invasion in gaza, a new gallup poll shows 55% of americans disapprove of israel's

military action. >> experts have been warning that palestinians are now facing famine. abc's britt clennett spoke with a unicef official who says the children of gaza are trapped in a cycle of suffering. >> you lie in bed and you just hear, and your building shakes and it feels like you're lying in a coffin. you just don't know what's going to happen if you're going to get hit. this has been the reality for five plus months for children. >> israel insists the ground offensive in rafah, in southern gaza, is needed to eliminate hamas. prime minister benjamin netanyahu is rescheduling a trip by an israeli delegation to washington to discuss possible options. >> morning. we're remembering longtime senator and former vice presidential candidate joe lieberman. he died after suffering complications from a fall. the democrat turned independent from connecticut prided himself on working with both sides of the aisle. he was al gore's running mate back in the year 2000. gore says lieberman was a gifted leader, adding, quote, doing things joe's way meant always putting his country and the values of

. >> and that's why at good morning america, we're right here and we got you, we got you, we got you. >> we're back now with two major cocaine busts. authorities in colombia captured a speedboat and more than three tons of the drug worth about $113 million. separately, nearly two more tons of cocaine was found in a shipment of avocados passing through a colombian port. >> we turn now to a new crackdown on squatters. a new law is giving property owners more power to evict people who are living in their homes without their permission. here's abc's alison kosik, the squatters cam ends today. >> florida governor ron desantis signing the first of its kind law in the nation, giving property owners more rights

against squatters. effective july 1st. any property owner dealing with a squatter can go to their local sheriff, show proof of ownership, sign a form and get the squatter tossed out. >> you are not going to be able to commandeer somebody's private property and expect to get away with it. >> squatting is when someone begins living on a property without permission, claiming ownership. all 50 states have some form of a squatters rights law meant to protect long time tenants from eviction, often leading to a lengthy and expensive court process for the owner. i'm not touching you are touching me and this lady is touching me. >> we're blocking you from coming in the house. >> you are going to obey god. >> it patti peoples knows all too well. squatters moved into one of her investment properties last year in jacksonville, florida. it took more than $40,000 and 36 days to get the squatters ejected. oh my gosh.

colliding at an intersection in daytona beach, florida. >> one ended up on its side there, but then other drivers stopped. they rushed in to help. they got together. they pushed the suv upright again and miraculously, no one was seriously hurt. and in northern california, cameras captured one suspect's attempt to flee police after his tire blew out, the man tried to carjack another vehicle. he then tried to hang on to an open window. as the driver took off, he was eventually arrested. >> new images from inside the home of rapper sean diddy combs after that raid by homeland security, tmz obtained images of open safes and cabinets, agents have seized computers and other electronics, sources say. they also found guns in both locations. they say the raids were in connection with a sex trafficking investigation. combs denies any wrongdoing and has not been charged with a crime. >> in medical news, new questions about popular weight loss, drugs and the effects they could have on pregnancy, a new alert for women using weight loss drugs like ozempic. anecdotes emerging about

unexpected pregnancies after starting the medications, the fda saying it is not aware of data that established an increase in unintended pregnancies caused by contraceptive failure reasons this might be happening. the drugs can interfere with the absorption of oral medications like birth control. another possible factor fertility, increases when people lose weight. >> losing weight, however, that can be done, can make a significant difference. >> meanwhile, the maker of ozempic is facing questions about its cost. a new study suggests the $1,000 per month drug can be produced for less than $5 per month. senator bernie sanders now urging ozempic maker novo nordisk to lower the list price of ozempic and the related drug wegovy in america to no more than what they charge for this drug in canada, which is $155 a month. the company declined to provide the production costs, but says it spent nearly $5 billion on research and development last year, and that the out-of-pocket costs for ozempic depend on a patient's insurance coverage.
