days. we had about two years worth of rainfall in athens in just 2a hours. further north high pressure is dominating the weather here and with that combination of high pressure for us and low pressure further south across europe that is going to draw in these southerly winds so they are coming up from north africa bringing that heat and humidity and somejust north africa bringing that heat and humidity and some just as well. we have some cloud towards the east which is burning back gradually towards the coast so for most of us long spells of blue skies and sunshine. just some cloud around this afternoon. but out there temperatures mid to high 20s widely, perhaps 31, 30 2 degrees down towards the south east. through this evening and tonight subtle changes, we could see some heavy showers and perhaps some thunder moving in. you

may hear some thunder storms overnight but for most of us some mist and fog developing and again it is humid overnight so for some of us, it could be feeling tropical tonight. a similar dated today tomorrow we do it all again with some low cloud around, and perhaps to the irish sea some isolated heavy showers for that but temperatures tomorrow similar to today, mid to high 20s for most but we could see another day of 30 degrees. that would be the fifth day of the heat wave continuing. not much change on friday, once again some low cloud around the north sea coasts and perhaps the odd shower in the west but most of us hot, dry and sunny once again. the heat wave continuing, high 20s, low 30s once again. subtle changes as we move towards the weekend and will start
1:32 pm
towards the weekend and will start to see low pressure just throwing some showers into northern ireland and scotland. by monday low pressure spreading further south and east. so the next few days some strong sunshine, hazy sunshine with some dust from the sahara around but hot until sunday in the south at least and then things turn eventually cooler through the course of next week. and that's bbc news at one. you can keep up with all the latest developments on the bbc website. developments on the bbc the news continues here on bbc one — as now its time to join our colleagues across the nations and regions for the news where you are — goodbye. hello and welcome to sportsday this wednesday afternoon. i'm chetan pathak. coming up on the programme... gearing up for the start of the rugby world cup — wales say they're fully fit, but there's an injury blow for theirfirst opponents, fiji.
1:33 pm
the youngest american us open semifinalist in 30 years — ben shelton continues his stunning run in new york. and, the world cup golden boot winner heading to the women's super league to play for manchester united. welcome along, thank you forjoining us. the build—up continues to the start of the rugby union world cup in france, just two days away now. wales coach warren gatland says all his players are fit for selection to face fiji in their opener on sunday in bordeaux. caleb muntz has been ruled out of the entire world cup for the pacific islanders because of a knee inury. despite the loss of such a key player, wales says it won't affect their preparations
1:34 pm
for the game, nor change how they expect fiji to play. i think the fact it has been in place for a long time. whoever they bring in i'm sure they will want to play within that structure. it can certainly work for them.- play within that structure. it can certainly work for them. they have had some good — certainly work for them. they have had some good results _ certainly work for them. they have had some good results from - certainly work for them. they have had some good results from that l certainly work for them. they have i had some good results from that way of playing, so i don't think that will change at all. we are of where what is compelling, we hopefully know what they are about, and we had prepped for it. ireland of course the top ranked side going into the tournament — with andy farrell leading the team in his first world cup as head coach. ireland won all three of their warm—up matches heading into the the tournament and have won their past 1a tests. despite this impressive run and their status as world number ones, hugo keenan expects ireland to be better than their recent performances have shown. i don't think we have shown our best
1:35 pm
in the sort of test games leading up to the world cup so far. we haven't been overly happy with our performances. there has been some good bits. but we are excited for this weekend. i think we are ready to show an improvement on what has been shown before. yeah, we are set for the challenge. next to new york — where the home favourite, ben shelton — a man who's been on the atp tour for less than a year — has become the youngest american us open semifinalist in 30 years. the 20—year—old — bottom of your screen — ranked 165 in the world, pulled off the biggest win of his career so far by putting out the tenth seed, frances tiafoe. in blistering fashion he took the first 6—2. tiafoe levelled the match. there was a very close third set tie breaker, but shelton took that set, and this one here to wrap up the win in four as he tries to become the youngest men's champion from america since andy roddick in 2003. it's an advantage with my game style playing someone who has never played

me before. i think that i can bring some things to the table that may be you don't see in your normal match that you play on the atp tour. so i'm definitely going to try to bring some things to the table that are different and hopefully disruptive. and up next for shelton is the ultimate test — novak djokovic — who's into a record 47th men's grand slam semifinal after beating taylor fritz. the world number one dealing with the heat and humidity in new york to reach the last four as he looks to win a 24th grand slam title that would bring him level with margaret court's all—time record. in the men's draw, all eyes will be on whether ben shelton can beat novak djokovic. in the women's draw, another young home player is in the spotlight — coco gauff has become the first american teenager since serena williams to make last four at the us open. the 19—year—old is readying herself for that long awaited breakthrough, by winning a grand slam. she's into the semifinals after beating jelena 0stapenko, who knocked out iga swiatek
1:37 pm
in the the last round. awaiting her in the last four will be this year's beaten french open finalist karolina muchova. and for gauff — who idolised the williams sisters growing up — the comparison with serena's run in 2001 is something she's loving. a lot of these stats have aligned with her, and people find new things to think about! i was the first teenager in the quarters, and now semis, and i guess if i win the going to be finals. i never take for granted, she is my idol. i think if he had told me when i was younger that i would be in a sense stat lines as her, i would freak out. i'm still not trying to think about it a lot, because i don't want to get my head big or add pressure, but it is a cool moment to have that alongside

her. the british players in the wheelchair competitions at the us open will be hoping to continue their good starts. all four progressing, including the defending singles champion, alfie hewett. andy lapthorne, meanwhile, beat robert shaw of canada 6—3, 2—6, 6—3 in the quad event. the former world number one is looking to win the us open for the third time, after taking the title in 2014 and 2019. gordon reid and lucy shuker are also through. an air accicident report into the helicopter crash that killed the leicester city chairman, vichai srivaddhanaprabha, in 2018 and four other people on board has found the crash was "inevitable" after a sequence of mechanical failures, and that the pilot could do very little to save all those on board. in the last couple of hours, leicester city football club have released a statement saying... "we commend the extensive and detailed body of work undertaken by the air accidents investigation branch and welcome the publication of its report, in the hope it will contribute positively to the continued development of future aviation standards and safety." the former spain head coach,
1:39 pm
jorge vilda, says being sacked weeks after winning the women's world cup is unfair. vilda was dismissed on tuesday, amid the fallout from president luis rubiales' behaviour at the final and his refusal to step down — something vilda had initially supported. most of vilda's coaching staff have resigned and 81 players are refusing to play for spain in the aftermath. vilda's former assistant, montse tome, has been named as his successor. manchester united women have signed japanese international hinata miyazawa on a permanent deal. she won the golden boot at this summer's women's world cup, scoring five goals in four games forjapan — making her the only non—european award winner at the tournament. england will be hoping to overcome the disappointment of their eight—wicket defeat to sri lanka at the weekend. they play their deciding t20 match tonight in derby. sri lanka's historic win at chelmsford saw the visitors level the series 1—1.
1:40 pm
england leg spinner sarah glenn says the defeat won't force the team into changing their playing style. we do have that style of play where we want to play aggressive and fun cricket, and we know that sometimes comes with losing wickets. i think iridaceous kilos partnerships together, and not going into our shells, still playing the fun side of cricket. keeping it simple, try and get those early wickets in the powerplay, and then as a fielding team buzzing around and helping our bowlers, which is basically our aim every game. and a reminder you can watch that live on bbc two, bbc iplayer and 5 sports extra and bbc sounds from 6:00 this evening. rory mcilroy says he is confident about europe's ryder cup chances and has backed the selection of swedish youngster ludvig aberg, who he's described "as an unbelievable player". the 23—year—old only turned pro injune, but was named as a wild card pick earlier this week.
1:41 pm
with the likes of sergio garcia, ian poulter and lee westwood not eligible for selection due to their moves to liv golf, mcilroy believes this year will be a "transitional time for europe". it's all lies at the end of the day. once the team is selected and the captain and vice captains are happy with whom they have on both sides, it's just a matter of going out there and seeing who plays the best and gets the most points. yeah, a lot of the other stuff is just noise. there are a few tournaments that we player that is a lot bigger than some of the other stuff going on, and the ryder cup is obviously one of them. can't like to be there, can't wait to be a part of another european team, and hopefully the outcome is different from last time. that is build—up the wider comp over on the bbc sport website and on the

to declare weather any of their schools are affected. at prime minister's questions, labour leader sir keir starmer brought up the concrete crisis in schools. he asked whether the prime minister agreed with his education secretary that he should be thanked for doing a good job? take a listen. the roof of singlewell primary school, in gravesend, collapsed in may 2018. thankfully it happened at the weekend and no children were injured. the concrete ceiling was deemed dangerous and liable to collapse and everyone knew the problem existed in other schools. yet the prime minister decided to halve the budget for school maintenance just a couple of years later. does he agree with his education secretary that he should
