francis scott key, who we see as, you know, the guy who writes the most patriotic of all songs, was a huge opponent of the war. he in particular is appalled at the u.s. actions towards canada, the fact that we're attacking canada, which he views as an innocent third party, and he actually writes a letter to john randolph of virginia, who was the congressman leading the a% nottingham. and he also forgets to bring along a spyglass, by the way. so his scouting reports aren't particularly useful. and then at blainsburg, he inserts himself in the chain of command and moves some of the forces around, so that they're not in support of each other. fascinating story, but he and madison, i think, really redeem themselves after the british depart washington. they -- madison spends the last night in refuge in brookville, maryland, and gets the word that the british have withdrawn after 24 hours. and he and monroe immediately ride back to washington. this is a moment when a lot of people were urging complete capitulation, still has that second british force coming up the potomac river. and just as
