he has now passed it on, officially, from jack kirsch men to diane as our fifth poet laureate. you would have thought that it must have gone on longer. but i am proud of it. as was jack, and i do not see him here, of his stewardship. jack and i did not always agree on every issue, and i went into this with some risk that i would be scorned even after appointing him. i would never have appointed him if i thought it would change his tenor. quite the contrary. i have admired him even more because he did an outstanding job as a steward of that position and really democratized the position even more reaching out into the neighborhood and also reaching out around the world in international issues, internationalizing our status. that is really important, raising the bar, also. he had a strategy of going deep into the community and broadening debt strategy in a broader context. i look for to extending that tradition which our new po gloria. i have had the privilege of reading through not only poetry but a lot of opinions that opinion-makers have, and lot of letters, and lot associated

i'm diane dwyer. we are on at 5:30 tonight because of college football coverage on nbc. just in time for the labor day weekend there was a great white shark sighting. people at dorran beach spotted a greawhite shark with a sea lion in it mouth. one park ranger said that was a first for him. you might remember it was just monday when a surfer took this video in pacifica with a great white eating a sea lion. 200 yards from a popular busy surf break. there were several witnesses. some say the shark was very large, 18 to 25 feet long which would be near a record. this fisherman's kayak tells of his count with a great white in san mateo county two weeks ago. he tells us he is lucky to have walked away with barely a kratch. between august and september white sharks are known to feed in the bay area's red triangle. one very lucky kayaker. >> california highway patrol officers inspected tour buses and vans coming through muirwoods national monument. not only making sure the vehicles were safe, but checked on

o'rourke again and diane, who joins us from chicago. first of all, diane, i'm going to ask you, is this a situation, is there enough meat in this proposal by the republicans to actually have some sense of how it's going to affect the economy? >> well, there's some things i guess we could look at. my own view is high income tax cuts to extend them now, although i wasn't in favor of them initially because of the deficit producing characteristics they have now, it's just too dangerous to do it because of the extortions they cause to financial markets and investors in financial markets for a year to extend them. my own view is we really need to regroup and rethink the entire tax code, simplify it, eliminate a lot of deductions and tax rates. that's a very different kind of rhetoric than we're hearing. we're just hearing a lot of bouncing around about what are the ideas already out there. i don't hear a lot of new ideas out there about how to deal with the deficit. the deficit, the elephant in the room is medicare and medicaid. nobody is tal
