south bay ranging 3 to 11 inches. this has been two to three times our monthly january rain and just in case you missed our earlier update, i had to get this in here again, massive improvements in the drought because of those storms over the past couple of weeks. look, we know there is so much severe damage out there, the storms have turned deadly but we did want to report on also the improvements of that rainfall, and you can see december 26, before the storm started, 35.49% of california was in that red color and that deepest red color and look at it today that has been wiped out. now we're still under a drought. there's the threat we could go back into it but we have made some huge gains on that and more rain coming. tomorrow will be our ninth storm in a series of storms. saturday would be the tenth. ordinarily while these storms are going to bring heavier rainfall, they wouldn't bring the impacts like landslide potential, flood concern, but because the ground is so saturated we have to stay on alert the next coupl

the south bay from san jose to morgan hill. but all of this activity, more of this rain coming in with not a lot of places for it to go. so it's definitely going to continue to rise going into this afternoon. and some of the heaviest rain right now is moving through monterey county and then moving off toward the east. so that's missing us, but there's still a lot more off the coast that has to make its way through the bay area today with this system that's tapping into that tropical moisture once again. so this is another atmospheric river. it's a narrow band of air that rides low in the atmosphere, and as it moves, especially to the coastline and some of the mountains, it wrings out a lot of moisture. we're still looking at heavy rainfall along the coastline. we can also see what is steering the moisture into the bay area. here is the center of the low pressure as it continues to bring it in. we'll see it not letting up for a while. so we've had all of these atmospheric rivers and we continue to monitor how our reservoirs are

the south bay here 2 to 7. the next storm system, the satellite radar picture, it's beginning to develop near the california/oregon border. we're going to see that move in as we roll through tomorrow's forecast. keep the umbrella. temperatures here in the 50s. now the timing on this has changed. we've seen a real big shift in this from the chance of rain all weekend long to it being, again, more consolidated. it's up to the north bay, marin, napa, sonoma county, smooth to the east bay, south bay and peninsula. i think we'll be fine through the afternoon, will be able to get through that. it will probably put your nerves on edge by 9:00 p.m. saturday. you can see all of the downpour that is will be heading for us. 9:00 p.m. tomorrow into very early sunday through about 2:00 a.m. we're talking about wind gusts 50 plus miles an hour, small hail, even some lightning with the heavy downpours. we're under scattered rain and it looks like right now we could see a break late sunday morning right on into the afternoon.
