school. and police are check the crime scene where the teens were shot. lindy joins us live from southeast washington with the latest. >> one of those shootings happened right here in front of the martin luther king, jr., elementary school. they had the area blocked off all day and the school is on lockdown as is a charter school across the street. a lot of parents are come here to pick up their children. they don't know if their children witnessed what had happened. but police say two people -- three people were shot in three separate locations. everyone involved is believed to be a teenager. and right now they have two people in custody. a lot of parents say there are problems in this neighborhood with teens that have been causing problems. >> every single day i come in here and worry about whether our child will be okay. >> unfortunate that it would happen in front of a school, especially an elementary school which is the enraging part of

the whole thing. regardless what was behind someone deciding to pull a gun out and shoot at another person and in front of a school this time of the morning. >> police have recovered some clothing. they even say they recovered one of the weapons. they did follow the shooters and arrested at least two people so far. again, those two people are expected to be teenagers as well. police say they believe they have in custody every one involved or know that the other people involved are in the hospital so they say they are trying to sort out what the motive is in this case. they wonder if perhaps these are two rival groups or maybe there was an issue between two people that got out of hand. reporting live in southeast, now back to you. well, republican presidential candidates are focusing on south carolina. and ahead of the next saturday primary. mitt romney leading the gop but admits winning the state will

told newt gingrich to shift his focus on romney's business ties. >> i want to go after and redirect and about his conservativism. >> gingrich says intends to highlight romney's views on social issues like abortion, gun control and same-sex marriage. he calls massachusetts moderate and says he is campaigning as a pro jobs reagan conservative. cbs news, the white house. the winner of the south carolina primary has become the nominee and every presidential election since 1980. a political activist plan to take down d.c. mayor vincent grey and council chairman kwame brown is getting serious. frederick butler has filed a notice of intent to recall grey and brown. he says both have betrayed the public trust. both are under fedding are investigation for their 2010

campaigns. mayor grey and council chairman brown say they have done wrong and they have ten days to smait formal response. after that, butler will have 180 days to get signatures from 10% of registered d.c. voters. former prince george's county states attorney glen ivy will not be running for congress. he has announced he is dropping out of the race because he was having trouble raising enough money to be competitive. ivy was taking on incumbent congress woman donna edwards for the nomination. edwards faces two other primary opponents. we have been telling you about the proposed fare hikes for metro. today the plan goes before the board for the first time. here is a surprising reaction could eventually save some riders money. >> reporter: board members say a fare increase is inevitable at this point. but at least one board member says that huge hike on paper

continued repairs to trains and escalators, faster service and more officers on buses and rails. >> this is not a done deal there will be a series of public hearings if the board votes by may 1. we are likely to see changes at metro july 1. outside metro headquarters in downtown, 9 news now. here is how metro's base subway fare compares to other cities. the minimum metro fare is $1.95. in new york it's $2.25. will get you anywhere on the system. and $1.70 in boston. $2.25in chicago. some transit systems have different prices for cash fares versus using a transit card just like metro. metro is working to improve bus service after several collisions and near misses were actually captured on tape. and one instance a bus driver is about to slam into a car that is stopped at a crosswalk for a woman with a baby in a

stroller. another driver actually slams into an suv stopped at a school zone. and another incident, a metro bus driver drives into another metro bus. >> ridiculous. didn't even slow down. >> like he is not paying attention. >> what i want is reasons why they are hitting the people. if it's because they are overworked or something else going on. >> many show the collisions or near collisions are not the metro bus driver's fault. in one scene, a woman runs out in front of a metro bus and in another near miss one bus turns in front. the metro bus. the driver slams on the brakes just in time. wcop originally obtained the dash camera videos as part of a freedom of information request. the hunt is on this afternoon for a man wanted in two violent home invasions in

two days. both happened in montgomery county. yesterday the bandit tied up a family in their home. he then took the house keeper's car and an atm card. police are looking for the grey 2005 ford expedition that was taken from the home. of course, residents are frightened. >> i don't understand why in this house and just today. so hopefully just one shot and not something that is like three happen once again. >> according to police, on tuesday, the same man broke into a woman's garage in wheaton, attacked her, took her vehicle and bank card. still to come, when 9 news now continues, find out why feathers were nearly flying during a local meeting over people wanting to raise chickens in their back yard. and find out why defense secretary leon panetta is calling for a thorough

fighters. the video was 39 seconds long. the team shown in the video is from camp lejeune in north carolina. a navy spokesperson calls it a egregious behavior. a writer is hearing another response. >> one sentiment that we heard repeated in several remarks is things get pretty tense there. they are under a lot of strain and sort ever seem to say, well, you have to show some level of sympathy. you don't -- maybe you don't know what they are going through. >> james sanburn adds this video could hamper american efforts to win support for our military efforts in afghanistan. defense secretary panetta assures the public that the people involved will be held accountable. we now have an update on a battle over church property in virginia. a judge has ruled against seven congregations who split from the episcopal church after it

installed an openly gay bishop. the case started in 2006. those churches wanted to keep their buildings and land after switching denominations. yesterday the judge ruled episcopal church should be restored as owner of all the churches. that same judge initially sided with the seven congregations. but the virginia supreme court disagreed and ordered a new trial. coming up next, howard and a wonderful forecast. >> going well up into the 50s. some areas might even be 60 today but this will be short lived warmth. the colder air is on the waism take a look at temps. we are looking at temperatures into the 50-degree readings in leesburg. 58 in arlington and 51 in laurel. i'm talking about arctic air headed this way and maybe some snow showers.

back yard chicken battle has come to arlington county where some residents are crying fowl over what they describe as excessively tough love regarding chicken farming. last night attended a meeting. which included some impassioned debates. >> start with a good ag and can't go wrong. >> tom loves eating eggs. >> i recently learned how to make a frittata. >> he is hoping to raise chickens in his back yard. fresh eggs will always be available to him and his family. >> feed a hen properly the eggs are healthier than what you can get. >> carter is one of the leaders of the arlington egg project. a group of residents now

hatching a plan to make it easier for people to raise their own chickens in arlington. tonight carter was making his case for back yard chickens during the monthly meeting of the arlington committee of 100. an influential community organization. >> a combination of health concerns, nutrition concerns, environmental concerns. >> the way the law is written now, a person needs about half an acre back yard in order to raise their own chickens and needless to say most people in arlington county do not have half an acre back yards. space requirements aren't the only issue. some people are not convinced that arlington residents should be allowed to raise chickens no matter how big their back yards. >> my concerns are rodent infestation. >> daryl hobbs says one of his neighbors had an illegal chicken coop for a year. >> i thought we had excess flies. we had rodents. chickens make noise and there is a smell. >> the egg project is very much in its infancy, its chick

hour. then this evening a few more clouds and then maybe 10 or 11:00 there will be more showers to show up from the west and that's in front of a strong cold front and our weather headlines mild today. mid-50s to low six. but i think the low 60s are well south of town and down toward fredericksburg and it's possible culpepper and some areas extreme southern maryland will tickle 60. then the strong front comes tonight and talking an arctic cold front. then rain and snow showers. north and west of town a little coating not out of the question and there could be that colder air taking wet streets and making them slick by tomorrow morning because it will be a windy and cold freeway. temperatures will stay in the 30s with windchills in the 20s and those cold temps are with us for saturday and sunday. the rain from last night and this morning had an inch and a half with some spots and left with a good deal of sunshine here and more clouds in the mountains and showers out to the west. you have to go back to kentucky before you get into that rain and that's what we are talking

i'm one-on-one today with a special individual because theater goers around town are actually seeing red. they are excited about a arena stage's newest production red that will start next friday at the wonderful glass palace. i like to call it that. edward is here with me. he is the star of this new production. red won six tony awards. arena stage is so excited to bring it to viewers here in the washington area and wusa is a partner of aren stawj. arena stage is my favorite theater of all. >> we are excited to bring it

here. we finished our run in chicago last halloween and took a little bit of a break and are excited to bring to washington to this great city and my artistic home and great visual art community and a terrific play. >> let's tell viewers about the story. >> the story is about mark rothco, the great american painter abstract expressionest who was given commission to paint murals, great architectural wonder in new york and struggled for two years. and decided at the very end of it that he preferred his artistic integrity and gave the money back and kept the painting. the artist at the height of its power deciding the sellout is not the way to go and cemented his place in american art history as the result of that. and ten years later actually committed suicide. he was a very troubled
