london" a op-ed saying it's a barbaric threat saying they will not be cowed. cameron this morning also said "isis will be destroyed, squeezed out of exist tense," but, george, it's unclear what they are going to actually do here. what the strategy is beyond the current campaign of u.s. air strikes in iraq. >> right, cameron didn't rule out further air strikes. cameron and obama in that op-ed taking on vladimir putin saying he's trying to change the course of ukraine from the barrel of a gun at the top of the agenda this morning perhaps more military and economic aid to ukraine? >> reporter: that's right. the prime minister of ukraine was here meeting with the top nato leaders. they are talking -- he's requested, you know, more military assistance, more financial assistance, unclear exactly what nato is going to provide, but that is front and center here this morning. >> okay, jon karl, thanks very much. george, back here at home new developments from ferguson, missouri. the protests have ended after police shot and killed unarmed

teenager michael brown last month but this morning, we're learning the ferguson police department will be the target of a federal civil rights investigation. abc's pierre thomas has the latest and joining us from washington, good morning, pierre. >> reporter: good morning, robin. the entire ferguson police department will soon be the subject of a sweeping justice department investigation. the attorney general is expected to announce as early as today that the federal government will examine whether the ferguson police are biased against minorities. there are a number of key questions that have arisen in the shooting of michael brown that sparked unrest in ferguson. do ferguson police discriminate against blacks in traffic stops and arrests and do officers routinely engage in ex-successive force against minorities as a pattern and practice. >> this is a separate investigation from the death of michael brown and they already are making changes. they're putting body cameras on the police officers. >> reporter: yep. that could help because it will give the public hard evidence that will show what happened during police encounters with residents but what the justice department is trying to

determine is has there been a culture of bias which ferguson police that needs to be rooted out. numbers that caught our attention, their attention. this is a city that's 67% african-americans, but police department only has 6% black people. >> that is a startling number. all right there, pierre, thank you very much. thank you, robin. the latest on that explosion at a children's museum in reno. more than a dozen hurt. children sent to the hospital and abc's aditi roy is live in reno this morning. good morning, aditi. >> reporter: good morning, george. 13 people were injured in that incident mostly children. one child remains in the hospital right now. listed in good condition. now, things are calm right now in front of the hospital right now, but just 12 hours earlier it was utter chaos as a science demonstration went horribly wrong. >> okay. ready?

[ screaming ] >> reporter: shrieks of terror ripple through the discovery museum in reno after a routine science experiment breaks down. >> most people ran and panicked. i grabbed children and started pulling them to the side away from it. >> reporter: jackie rider shot this video. it shows what offs say was a chemical splash resulting from a mixture of methyl alcohol and boric acid routinely used at the exhibit. flames appear to fall off the table and onto the floor just feet away from a group of children. among them, jackie's niece. >> she was on fire completely on fire. her hair, her back, her face. >> reporter: 13 people were injured. officials say the science demonstration which takes place daily at the museum was supposed to simulate a tornado. the executive director of the museum said in a statement "we are committed to determining the cause of this incident." >> we'll figure out what happened and make sure it doesn't happen again. >> reporter: still, some parents

say they're not coming back. >> not any time soon. >> reporter: there is minimal damage at the museum. now it shut down early yesterday but is expected to re-open later on this morning as investigators try to piece together exactly what went wrong. george. >> yeah, this is a strange one. thanks very much. today's other top stories from amy. good morning, we begin with a breaking story overnight near nashville, tennessee. a disturbance at a juvenile desense ten ter where dozens of teens escaped. 24 teens refusing to go back to their dorms were caught on camera here attacking the guards pumping one of them, pushing another against a fence. some of the teens were armed with meatal pipe answer rocks and climbed to the roof before finally being rounded up. sixteens from monday's escape are still on the loose. some with violent criminal backgrounds. and students in houston are protesting what they call an excessive use of force by police at a high school who were caught on tape restraining a

15-year-old girl for talking on her cell phone in class. the student who weighs 70 pounds as you hear her screaming as one officer appears to put his knee on her head. the school district is investigating. well, fast food workers across the country are walking off the job today to demand a living wage. organizers say this time some workers may engage in nonviolent civil disobedience. most fast food workers make around $7.25 an hour, about $15,000 a year full time. they want their pay doubled. a drive-through disaster at this mcdonald's in oklahoma. the giant golden arches came crashing down on cars waiting in line. two people were trapped in that wreckage but thankfully suffered only minor injuries. a frightening scene at this sports stadium. look at that. the ceiling suddenly collapses to the floor. this happened during a badminton competition in vietnam. players had been on the court 20 seconds earlier but the referee heard a crack and hangfully evacuated everyone in time.

call 911 and stand back and if somebody does happen to get bitten authorizes are ready to fly the crucial anti-venom up from the san diego zoo, george. >> thank goodness for that. run first then call 911, okay, david, thanks very much. to you to that airline passenger who sparked a nationwide debate against reclining seats saying why he blocked the seat in front of him forcing an emergency landing. abc's david kerley has that story. >> reporter: it was the use of these $22 pieces of plastic that diverted a united airlines flight. this morning the man who used these seat defenders to keep the woman in front of him from reclining says he's ashamed and embarrassed but he'd use them again. james beach is a frequent flier telling the associated press he never reclines adding you have the right but it seems to do it. knee defenders are not illegal but banned by major carriers. beech says he doesn't tell the passenger in front of him he's using the gadgets, quote, i'd

rather just kind of let them think the seat is broken rather than start a confrontation" but that's what he did ten days ago and removed them after being told to do so but the woman in front of him slammed her seat back, a war of words erupted and the woman throwing her soda in his face. >> if these two were fighting, can you only imagine what the folks a few rows behind them were feeling? >> reporter: the flight diverted to chicago. both passengers removed. it was the first of three incidents in a little more than a week. this woman who demanded her west palm beach bound plane be put down because a reclining seat was escorted off a jet monday. so far from a full apology from a man who used these knee defenders, neither he nor the woman who were taken off the plane were charged. he got to keep these. he got home to denver on another airline, one that doesn't have reclining seats. must have made him pretty happy. >> thanks very much. mike, you have a very different story. >> a class ago. class act move by an nfl team.

the bengals signed devin steele to their practice squad after cutting him. now his mind was not on the game of football. his daughter battles an illness but the team's move guarantees him a paycheck, health insurance and most importantly more time with his little girl. >> devin steele -- >> reporter: for devin steele it was a one-two punch. >> i just broke down in tears and i couldn't stop crying. >> reporter: in june his 4-year-old daughter leah, the energetic light of his life diagnosed with stage 4 pediatric cancer. >> it was like my whole world turned up side down. >> reporter: steele blindsided for going off-season workouts to spend every moment with her. >> my dad got a bald head now. >> you're going to be just like this. >> reporter: he shaved his head in solidarity then another blow. the bengals cutting steele from the team saturday. >> i completely understand where the bengals were coming from when they cut me because i couldn't give football 100%

right now. >> reporter: but this morning an emotional second chance. the bengals offering still a spot on its practice squad providing him with much-needed medical insurance and $6300 a week in salary to help pay for leah's care. even better, it means less travel. keeping him close to the little girl he calls the selfie queen. >> they could have washed their hands of me and said they didn't care what i was going through off the field. it's kind of like a blessing in disguise for me. >> reporter: both daddy and daughter now determined to return to the game stronger than ever. >> if we're going to go to battle with cancer then she's willing to put up the fight to beat it. >> you know, the great thing about that, the team could do anything. they could release a player and you're on your own out in the world. for the bengals to do that, a classy, classy move, way to go, bengals. >> beautiful little girl. just like that. companies and businesses could take a lesson from this. you know, when you need them most, they came through, the bengals. they can learn.

home invasion. all the drama playing out on the 911 call as the woman hid in her bathroom. what she did when she came face to face with the burglar. plus the bit irdivorce battle that could end up with one of the biggest stepans ever. the wife of a hedge fund manager claiming she was forced to sign the prenup. two high school teachers who made this viral video, a spoof of "footloose" all about going back to school and they're here to talk about it. it's fun. >> but we'll begin this half hour with an unusual murder trial under way in california. paul curry is accused of poisoning his wife back in 1994. 0 years ago. it's taken prosecutors that long to make the case against him and abc's cecilia vega has that story. >> reporter: it is a cold case that had authorities stumped for years. this morning the man who police say almost got away with murder will be in a southern california courtroom. jury selection is under way in the trial of paul curry, the

57-year-old accused of poisoning his wife linda 20 years ago cashing in on insurance money and moving to another state to start a new life. >> this is pure greed and unfortunately it's the kind of greet that allowed someone to kill the person he was supposed to protect. >> reporter: they met at the san onofre lab and lived here in san clemente but according to court records just nine months into their marriage linda started miysteriously having symptoms. a year later she died. eventually forensic testing confirmed linda, a nonsmoker, had fatal levels of nicotine in her system. but as prosecutors told our los angeles station in 2010, it took years and more testing before authorities could link paul curry to her death. >> science's ability to determine the amount of nicotine in somebody's system and how lethal it is and timing of it was able to help us.

>> reporter: curry was arrested four years ago in a small town in kansas where he worked in government overseeing city building inspections. he remarried and lived off a $400,000 insurance payout from linda's death. but legal observers say the case brings challenges for prosecutors. >> this case may have unique problems due to its age. witnesses may have passed away. their memories may have failed. >> reporter: curry pleaded not guilty. if convicted he faces life in prison without the possibility of parole. for "good morning america," cecilia vega, abc news, los angeles. >> abc's dan abrams is here with more on this. no statute of limitations when it comes to a murder case like this. 20 years later here we are. >> he's a been a suspect from the beginning. not one of those cases where new dna evidence came to light and they were able to find it based on new technology because, remember, this is a husband and wife who lived in the same house so his dna would be everywhere. it seems that there's some sort of new technology or new testing that was done that allowed them

to determine exactly how she died but what this really comes down to to me is a reinvigorated investigation in 2007. a district attorney who decided to take a new look at this case, do some new testing in this case and now has filed charges in 2010. >> as we heard in the report 20 years later. that's a long time. it's not going to be easy. >> it hasn't been easy from the beginning. they haven't been able to file charges because it's been a tough case and put on top of that you have these witnesses who may have passed away, may have forgotten thing, et cetera, this is not going to be an easy case and one of the key questions, of course, will end up being exact cause of death. they're going to probably battle over could it have been something else? exactly how did she die? are we certain that it happened at someone else's hand, et cetera. >> so what do you think is the biggest challenge? >> they have a lot of problems here on both sides of had case but when it comes to the

defense, there's a little nugget about a missing rolex watch that she had had that the authorities say he put on the insurance form that it was stolen. they say he gave it to her sister. why is that important? because it goes to his credibility. mining that if the jurors don't believe him, that could be a big problem. >> something like that 13 as part of the defense, a small point that could end up being really important? thanks. now to a phoenix woman's terrifying confrontation with a burglar in her own home caught on a 911 call and grabbed her gun before hiding away and turns out she may have needed it. abc's ryan owens has the story. >> can you please help me? somebody is trying to get into my house. >> reporter: that voice belongs to a phoenix woman hiding in the bathroom of her home when police say 20-year-old michael louis breaks down her door. >> they just broke in. >> reporter: alone and afraid she can't afford to wait. >> they're coming in right now. please, please, please. >> reporter: then the 911 call takes a more dramatic turn and

we're back now at 7:42 with a nasty divorce battle that could end up being one of the largest settlements ever. a hedge fund manager and his wife fighting for his billions. he says they have a prenup. she's fighting back saying she was forced to sign it. abc's linzie janis has all the details. >> reporter: this morning one of the most successful money managers in the world is in a fierce battle over his own estate. ken griffin filing for divorce if his wife of 11 years anne griffin this summer claiming irreconcilable differences. mrs. griffin now asking a judge to throw out their prenuptial agreement saying tuesday she signed it under duress. >> this could be one of the biggest divorces we've ever seen in this country. >> reporter: in legal filings anne griffin once a successful money manager herself said the prenup would leave her with just

1% of her husband's net worth which has been estimated at over $5 billion. >> how big a deal is ken griffin. >> he is as big a deal as they come. he's the guy that people in the financial industry want to be and the guy they fear. >> reporter: the couple who has three children were married in 2003 in a lavish ceremony held at the palace of versailles in france. mrs. griffin alleging in the days before they walked down the aisle the couple argued intensely about their prenup. she claims her soon-to-be husband became violent asking her to go to a psychologist who she says convinced her to sign it. something she says she did just three hours before their rehearsal dinner. mrs. griffin also saying her husband failed to disclose he had a previous professional relationship with the psychologist. lawyers for ken griffin telling abc news anne's allegations are salacious and simply untrue. now a judge will decide how this fortune unfolds.

antibiotics in livestock and then antibiotic resistance which then affects humans so in theory the healthier the animals, the healthier the people who eat the meat from those animals. >> what do you think? >> it's an important first step but need to broaden it out to how they're treated, raised and lived because if they're jammed into close quarters and peck each other and they spread infection, that's not good for them and it's not good for us but it's much more than the issue of antibiotics. it's are they being given hormones? what are they being fed and how are they living so an important step but it's not the whole picture. >> their living conditions is why they're given antibiotics in the first place. >> part of the reason. it's -- they get an infection and it spreads. not only bad business for the farmer who is growing them but bad for those animals and then bad for our health but, again, when you're talking about antibiotic resistance, we need to use those antibiotics. >> this is only the beginning because we hear about that all the time, the overuse of antibiotics and they just don't work. >> that's right and we need to
