>> ♪ >> now at 10:00, it is a one-two winter punch. right now storm scan3 showing a big band of winter weather in the area. it is the begin of what will be a messy start to the week. good evening i'm jessica dean. chris may is off tonight. some schools have canceled testing tomorrow and the complete lit is at the bottom of your screen now and always at cbsphilly.com. in the meantime penndot crews are getting ready for the storm loading up with salt prepare to hit the roads. we have our winter weather team in place and we'll begin with meteorologist kathy orr. kathy. >> jess, this storm is fast and furious. everyone tweeting in i have rain i have sleet, i have snow. a variety of precipitation with this. you can see in snow mixing in with sleet where you see this white lavender color and 19 south jersey where we're looking with rain mixing with sleet and people saying in wrightstown and deptford, i'm hearing pinging on my windows yeah that's definitely sleet. you can see through wilmington we have a little bit of a wintry mix here n upper darby we're seeing light snow, even in philadelphia and as that warm air pushes up the i-95 corridor we will eventually see a changeover to rain. a winter weather advisory in effect until tomorrow morning for most of the region except central and southern delaware and of course south jersey and cape may county where we are expecting just mainly rain. we are looking at temperatures that are falling so it's cold enough for snow many locations. snow and ice through the lehigh valley and the poconos

3 to 5-inches there mainly snow and ice through the event. 1 to 3 inches north and west of the city, snow changing to rain overnight. for the city and south jersey we're talking snow to rain up to an inch expected there. mainly rain of course as we look through south jersey and central and southern delaware, gusty winds during the day on saturday. we are looking at conditions that are going to be changing and with that this is what we expect. the time line of the snow that will continue to be moving north during the overnight hours, the heaviest precipitation between 2:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. changing over to rain from south to north. moderate rain tomorrow during the afternoon and then possibly ending as a brief period of snow tomorrow afternoon between 2:00 p.m. and four f.m. coming up we'll go neighborhood by neighborhood to show was to expect as far as snowfall for the overnight period. jess back to you at that time lots to talk about tonight. >> thanks kathy. thanks for keeping your eye on it. our team coverage continues with kate bilo. she's in the mobile weather lab in phoenixville with more on conditions there. kate. >> reporter: thank you jessica. we're in my hometown and phoenixville. the snow started falling very heavily very quickly. take a look outside. we're right on bridge street and it's a crowded friday night, phoenixville hopping on a friday night but as we look out to the streets the snow has started falling heavily started coming down 15 minutes ago as light flakes but now you have the big fat wet flakes as the moisture starts to lift into the system. the roads are wet for now and we expect the snow to potentially pile up quickly especially on back roads.

let's take a look at what we can expect on roads across the area. we'll set this into motion. future weather showing how the rain mixes into the system but it does stay snow and ice especially to the north and west. what to expect on the area roadways. if you're on the atlantic city expressway, the schuylkill expressway on 95 we expect it to be all rain tomorrow morning. if you're further north though perhaps in northeast extension, i80 i-78 especially 80 and 78 we expect snow and ice and some treacherous travel especially early tomorrow morning. icy on the northern part of the northeast extension further south we're expecting all rain. so again back here live as we head towards the end of bridge street in phoenixville you can see the wet roads, you can see the big fat flakes are continuing to fall and we expect several inches of accumulation herely in phoenixville and the northwest suburbs before the changeover to sleet, freezing rain and then to just plane rain so please be safe out on the roads tonight. we're going to continue driving around the area and bringing you updates from the cbs3 mobile weather lab. reporting live in phoenixville meteorologist kate bilo. >> penndot crews have been especially busy as you can imagine. "eyewitness news" reporter natasha brown is live at the penndot yard in norristown with more. natasha, snowflakes where you are? >> reporter: long before the first drop of snowfalls hundreds of penndot trucks were busy brining and preparing the highways. >> preparatory work began last night. we sprayed express ways, limited access highways last night. >> reporter: more than 330

trucks will canvas more than 11,000 miles of state highways coating the roads with salt in anticipation of snow accumulation. with this latest weather event expected to bring a mixed bag of precipitation penndot is ready to tackle it on all fronts. >> what's going, it's going to be a long operation for the crews. it's going to be critically important that we get the salt down early, salting the highways. we will begin that operation as the snow begins to fall. >> reporter: bags of salt and snow shovels are flying off the shelves at fairmount hardware. residents ready to clear path when necessary. >> today a lot of people started coming in buying salt, buying shovels. seems like things are kicking off for that kind of weather now. >> picking up some salt and a shovel, some calcium and a shovel just to get ready for the snow that's coming in tonight to make sure our sidewalks are clear. >> reporter: there's no shortage of salt in a season so far that's brought only minimal amounts of snow. still some drivers say they're looking forward to this late of the round of winter weather. >> i'm not worried about it after all. i enjoy it actually. >> reporter: it's not going to keep you inside. >> no, absolutely not. i'll be out doing the same thing i do every weekend. >> reporter: well, penndot crews say they will be out overnight and into the morning hours as long as the snow is falling. they're again urging drivers just to be cautious, be safe on the roadways and because of it their trucks are going to be out there paving a safe path ahead of you. reporting live here in norristown tonight, natasha brown, "eyewitness news" at 10:00 on the cw philly all right, natasha thank you. and tonight is a very good night to download and use the cbsphilly weather app.

patterson they should not face charges. >> it's not our fault. we didn't do it, the animal did it. >> reporter: the animals did it but you guys -- you left that child. >> yeah, we left the child -- we left the child for like -- unattended which we take the full responsibility of it. >> this is the most horrific thing i've seen happen to a child in 45 years in this town. >> reporter:. >> the ferrets caused severe damage to that baby's nose, upper lip and can cheek. authorities are now deciding whether to file criminal charges against those parents. a former volunteer firefighter is facing more than 160 criminal counts. police say he sexually assaulted more than a dozen children. authorities say 20-year-old john corcoran of glenolden repeatedly sexually assaulted 14 children to who range in age from eight to 14. investigators say he lured victims with gifts and that he would use them to make child pornography. new at 10:00 the husband of a missing woman is now back in delaware to face charges. cortez hamilton is senior is charged with endangering the welfare of children and assault with serious bodily injury. he was found in indiana. the thin's mother 35-year-old keisha hamilton remains missing. a disturbing discovery tonight in philadelphia's kensington neighborhood. two women ages 41 and 38 were found dead in a car in the parking lot of an auto zone on aramingo avenue. drug paraphernalia were found in that car. police believe they may have died of a drug overdose. police release new video in the search for a man who attacked a student on a septa

trolley. this shows clear video of that suspect beating the girl on the route ventrally. the teen says she bump they had man with her backpack and he responded by punching her in the face. if you recognize the suspect call police. tonight marks one month since a woman was run down and can killed by a car in south philadelphia. and the search continues for the driver who just kept on going just before christmas. the victim's family tells "eyewitness news" reporter todd quinones they're not giving up. >> starting to get that feeling of hopelessness. >> reporter: every hour that passes without the arrest of theresa posey's killer brings more anguish for her mom and dad. >> it's just heartbreaking. >> reporter: the 33-year-old was run down just two days before christmas on state road. she was visiting her boyfriend at curran fromhold correctional facility. the best leads for police right now include granny surveillance video that included the older model dark color pick up or tow truck that hit posey and police recovered this broken piece of the turn signal. >> it's not supposed to be this way. you never imagine in your wildest dreams that you would bury your child reporter: friday marks the one month anniversary since posey was struck and killed on state road. the family is not giving up looking for the driver. they've create add facebook page to try to boost the amount of reward money. citizens crime commission is offering a $4,500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the driver who according to eyewitnesses didn't even hit the brakes after striking pozzi.

her son axle was the first time she had ever seen a baby. bites has star guard disease an blind spot takes up most of her vision but she says she'll never forget the first time she saw her son. those glasses allow her not only to see people but also to read small print on labels. the glasses were developed by a canadian company. they've now been on the market for about a year. it is an unusual birthday celebration. a 76-year-old delaware county man embarks on the journey of a lifetime. >> baby. >> he's got a lot of enthusiasm no doubt about it. that is harold samson walking out of his broomall home with his unbridled enthusiasm for life and his 76ers. today is his 76th birthday and he celebrate bide walking the 18 miles to see the sixers in south philadelphia. "eyewitness news" was there as he arrived at the wells fargo center just after 6 o'clock tonight. >> every day is a gift. it's a present and i'm thankful every day and i'll of course tomorrow when it comes tomorrow. i've walked the walk and now i've earned the right to talk the talk. >> happy birthday. samson says he is passionate about staying fit. >> the storm has arrived and on storm scan3, we are looking at some snow, we're looking at sleet and we're looking at rain and you can see the dividing line. now out through chester county we are looking at snow in coatesville. everyone has been tweeting and sending in their updates. we appreciate that. let's zoom in and show you the dividing lines. chester county we're seeing some snow, even bensalem reporting snow right now. through south jersey sicklerville seeing snow and ice see mix and you can see right here a little bid of a

dividing line north of route 1 where we have snow in honeybrook even in pottstown. you're on the edge of that mix there and also as we go a little bit to the west philadelphia reporting light snow but on the jersey side even in gloucester reporting a little bit of an icy mix so you're going to be in and out of some sleet some snow until some of the warmer air to the south works its way in. toward the shore we're going to be seeing obviously mainly rain. pemberton, mount laurel seeing an icy mix right now with some snow and you can see down the shore expecting rain and a little bit of wind during the day tomorrow t let's check in with our eyewitness weather watchers and see what they have to say about what's going on across the delaware valley. now, right now temperatures have been falling and they've been falling pretty fast so depending on where you live you could see a variety of precipitation. seeing some snow of course on the jersey signed on the pennsylvania side. 33 degrees to the north and west of the city where barbara is reporting in, some light snow in willow grove the same goes to the west and even to the south a variety of mix. some rain, some snow and even a little bit of sleet reported in delaware. in new castle county tyler is saying some sleet falling. the winds are pretty light at about 5 miles an hour. now, take a look at what else we have going on here as far as the precipitation is concerned. the future weather shows by 2:00 a.m., warm air pushing in even in philadelphia beginning to change that precipitation over to rain. and our line right here through reading, even through montgomery county still seeing some sleet and some snow so still accumulating and then by 3, 4 o'clock in the morning even by 6:00, that warm air surges toward the lehigh valley but i still think

you'll be in the snow and the sleet into the dawn hours and then after that, we begin to dry it out a little bit. one more wave of precipitation moving in late in the afternoon. i do think that could even end as a little bit of wet snow. mainly rain through south jersey, a coating to an inch through philadelphia before the changeover to rain. one to three in our northern and western suburbs and in the poconos three to advertisement so, you can see vineland looking at mainly rain a-coating to an inch in media philadelphia wilmington. changing over to rain overnight. one to three through pottstown, chester county, three to five where you see mainly snow here through the lehigh valley and extending into the poconos. we are going to be seeing a little bit of icing going on during the transition so be aware of that. right now looks like mainly through the lehigh valley and into the poconos about a .10 of an inch before you pretty much end tomorrow afternoon with snow and sleet. a lot of the moisture is going towards rain. that's why this isn't a major snow event. a lot of warm air. a model consensus about an inch of rain during the day tomorrow. we're expecting icy spots overnight especially north and west. reduced visibility with some heavy precipitation. slow it down. south and east of course we're going have heavy rain. every night the low 31 and rising as we change over to rain from south to north. morning snow far north and west. rain in philadelphia and our suburbs the high 38. frigid through the midweek
