>> ♪ >> from the cbs broadcast center in philadelphia, this is cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> now at 10 o'clock a deadly ambush in north philadelphia. a woman is killed as she stands waiting for the bus. tonight her family and friends wander answers and justice. good evening, thanks for being with us tonight. i'm chris may. >> i'm jessica dean. police believe this was not a random killing. "eyewitness news" reporter david spunt joins us live from north philadelphia where family and friends are mourning this loss, david. >> reporter: jessica, this is a very confusing story and family and friends want answers. behind me is the bus stop where this happened and police are in the middle of a manhunt priority number one finding out who shot and killed a mother of two in broad daylight. things were quiet on the corner of developth and jefferson tuesday night. 12 hours earlier kim jones lost her life shot in the back of the head by a man police say then left carrying a duffle bag. >> everybody knew who she was. she caught the bus every morning to work, so it's like who would? and i mean, broad daylight? >> reporter: detectives are confident the attack was not random. >> someone knew her routine. somebody knew that every morning she got on the bus at that time to go in to work and ambush her. >> reporter: jones a program director at turning point for children was on her way to the office on south 15th street. >> it just seems so senseless. it's hard to process. >> reporter: michael vogel was her boss. he recruited and hired her almost 10 years ago. he says the company is in

shock over the murder of his friend and colleague. >> i don't know how we're going to go forward. we never had to deal with anything like this. >> reporter: temple university sent out this text alert to students warning them to look out for a suspect. >> i was just glad they came early so that people knew about it and like the area is kind of close to campus so that people in the area knew. >> reporter: now police say surveillance cameras in the area may help them solve the mystery. >> we don't know why she was murdered. we'll get to the bottom of that and hopefully get the person responsible very quickly. >> reporter: police say at this point it doesn't appear that her job as a social worker had any effect into what happened. i spoke to her son. he lives block away from where i am right now. off camera he says he's devastated. if anybody has any information police want to hear from you. we're live in north philly tonight, david spunt "eyewitness news" on the cw philly. >> well, new at 10 o'clock tonight a store owner is shot in kensington and police say it all happened in front of his wife and 21-year-old son. officers say two men walked into this store in the 2900 block of d street. one of them then held a gun to that man's head and demanded money. the owner grabbed the gun. the gunman fired hitting the owner in the shoulder and then the suspects took off. that man is expected to be oakton night. no one else was hurt. >> a mount laurel man is behind bars tonight charged with killing highs wife. kyle crosby was arraigned by video in mount holly today. he's been form nally charged with the murder of his wife erica crippen and endangering

the lives of her two children. investigators are searching for her bodily she hasn't been seen for two weeks. her family says closure won't come until they can bury the young mother. >> no way. him and his family, to leave us out there without nothing no erica. >> reporter: crosby is now being held on $1.2 million bail. >> well, it's another chilly night out there. "eyewitness news" at dillworth park where it was a great weather for skating. but some spots will soon be seeing snow along with that ice. >> meteorologist kathy orr is following some flakes as they make their way into our area. kathy. >> yeah, president company excluded jessica. we have conditions that are going to be changing rapidly. here is an area of developing low pressure that's going to move toward the north and east. you can already see the snow and a little sleet moving out ahead of this and that means it is going to bring a little bit of that toward the delaware valley. right now temperatures in the 20's and some teens. so everywhere really cold enough to see snow even through south jersey and delaware. so, take a look at our future weather. we'll start the clock off at the present time, overnight by about six, 7:00 a.m. you'll see snow showers moving through millville and dover even sleet highlighted in pink through atlantic city and heading down towards wildwood and georgetown delaware and we will be seeing a very light accumulation at best. so the best chance of seeing a coating of snow will be from toms river to wildwood, millville, through central and southern delaware. now, this is what we're looking for, some scattered snow showers, sleet mixed in as well. generally during the morning

"eyewitness news" starts at 4:30 on our sister station cbs3. and then it continues at 7:00 right here on the cw philly. >> breaking news now. the decision just came down a bucks county school board has fired a guidance counselor who made headlines with a controversial facebook comment. mary kate blank burke worked at central bucks high school. supporters came tout to speak on her behalf but that wasn't to sway the board. blankenburg posted a message threatening to shoot protester whose were staging a die in outside an eagles game on december 7. she was never criminally charged. more on this breaking story at 11:00. a chester county teacher is facing charges tonight. sara o'neill is accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a 16-year-old student at church farm school. o'neill was a teacher at the school. west whiteland township police say the relationship began in january 2014 and lasted 10 months. the 35-year-old is charged with four counts of corruption

of minors. new tonight, the manhunt is on for a serial robber who police say has committed 10 robberies at stores in west and southwest philadelphia. that suspect is identified as cartel right. he's also known as kevin jones. the two most recent robberies happened at mcdonald's restaurants on sunday and monday. all but two robberies occurred in the last month. wright is also wanted for a carjacking. >> a dog is recovering tonight after being rescued from the freezing cold in chester county. the chester county spca has nicknamed this mail chihuahua christopher robin. he was rescued from an outdoor cage at a home in valley township on saturday. and when he arrived at the spca, he was severely hypo thermic. there was another dog that had died. the owner is likely to be prosecuted. >> starting today amber alerts will be sent out to people in specific targeted search areas via facebook. alerts will include pictures and important information. it will pop up right on your news feed. authorities think it's an immediate way to reach some of the 180 million americans who currently use the social media platform. a grand jury has indict add bartender ohio for threatening to kill the speaker of the house john boehner. authorities say michael hoyte spoke of poisoning bane nor who is a member of the country club where hoyte worked. hoyte called police in october after he was fired from that club and blamed bane nor for his woes. hoyte also said he believed the congressman is responsible for the ebola virus. the 44-year-old is now undergoing a psychiatric

evaluation. >> tonight cbs news has learned the gunman responsible for the paris terror attack received $20,000 from al-qaeda to help finance that violence. a memorial service for the three french officers killed in last week's attack was held at police headquarters. and new video of the kouachi brothers after they went on a rampage at the charlie hebdo newspaper was released today. 12 people were killed there. one of the gunmen is heard yelling they have avenged the prophet mohammed. during an emotional press conference publishers of the newspapers announced a cartoon of the prophet mohammed will be on the cover tomorrow. lawyers for boston marathon bombing suspect dzhokhar tsarnaev wants a judge to suspends jury selection. they say the recent terrorist attacks in france will prejudice jurors. the lawyers say jurors have been instructed to avoid reports about tsarnaev's case but not the french attacks. >> you can expect to see stronger security at the airport. the department homeland security is ramping up its airport searches. new measures lynn include random searches of passengers and of carry on luggage at the game. even after the passengers have gone through security check points. >> we now know it was a 61-year-old virginia woman who died after smoke filled a subway station and tunnel in washington, d.c. hundreds were stranded on a train as the tunnel filled filled with smoke yesterday evening. firefighters evacuated people who were seen covered in soot gasping forearm officials say something came in contact with the high voltage third rail causing an electrical arc. septa wants to let its riders what to do in the event

of trouble underground and reassure them the authority is prepared. they gave walt hunter an exclusive ride along today. >> reporter: scenes like these from monday's deadly incident as smoke filled the metro tunnel in washington show what septa officials say they understand very well. any emergency unfolding aboard a train underground can be especially frightening for passengers. >> sure. you're in the dark a closed environment you feel trapped and that is understandable. >> reporter: septa's chief safety officer scott sauer gave us an exclusive ride along look at how it's protecting riders. the first thing you need to know. >> stay in place. >> reporter: with more than 400 miles of rail, 18 are underground and septa says in the event of an emergency that presents unique challenges. >> there's just lots of situations where you could trip-and-fall aside from the third rail itself which is electrified. >> reporter: septa says all its tunnels are fully lit with reflective signs every few feet so passengers and crew can pinpoint their exact locations for rescuers. >> so that wherever you are you're within about 10 to 15 feet of another sign that you could see where you are. >> reporter: if you're uncomfortable underground septa points out its tunnels are much closer to the surface than other major cities allowing first responders to use these special street rescue greats to get to passengers more quickly. all crews septa says are especially trained for tunnel incidents. safety information available for riders on every car. >> just like you would read instructions on an airplane. >> reporter: finally center

>> well, back on "eyewitness news" with a pretty astounding attempt out west. climbers kevin jorgensen and tommy called we would are making their way up yosemite park's he will captain. they are only using safety equipment, nothing else. they're gripping the rock with their fingers and their toes. if they can make it they'll become the first to free climb up this wall. they've got about a thousand feet left and good luck to them. we'll keep you posted on their progress. >> getting nervous just watching that. >> fingers and toes. the popular car service app uber is getting heat in new york. >> officials are questioning company executives over prices. as some of you probably know during rush hour uber doubles and sometimes triples its rates. you could say it was fate for a newly married couple can. a bride and groom tied the knot over the weekend and they might have had a little deja vu. >> 20 years ago brittany husbyn and briggs walked down the aisle as flower girl and ring bearer. a chance reunion in a college classroom led brittany and brigs to their first date. five years later the couple has tied the knot. >> i pledge my life and love to you. >> i pledge my life and love to you. >> ♪ >> a lovely scene from this past saturday. both brittany and briggs say they don't remember a lot about the first time they met but clearly they'll never forget the second. >> best story of the day right, hands down. weather-wise we're talking

about some snow and a little bit of sleet but not in philadelphia and points to the north and west. it's going to be coming through south jersey and central and southern delaware. let's check out some of the temperatures. right now in ocean city james is saying it's only 25 degrees winds at about 15 miles an hour. look at that barometric pressure 30.54 and falling an indication that low pressure is getting closer and that is the case in the first state of delaware, temperatures are cold as well. john reporting a temperature of 24 degrees in glasgow and you could be seeing a little bit of sleet and maybe a little of light snow but more likely in central and southern parts of the state. right now in middletown the temperature 24. jason is saying, yes, the pressure is steady for now another cold clear night and it's going to get even colder. jason you can see a few snow showers. temperatures right now across the region are reporting in in the teens and the 20's. in royersford 19, collingswood 21. smyrna 27. in philadelphia john reporting a temperature of 22 degrees so it is cold everywhere across the delaware valley. the best chance of seeing the snow as i mentioned will be south jersey and delaware and we are looking at a chance of that even in atlantic city. and we are looking at conditions right now that are deteriorating. some clouds moving through our shore points. on storm scan3 you can see the clouds moving in. precipitation not that far behind. in richmond seeing some light snow even some sleet in norfolk and along the shores of virginia we're seeing in virginia beach some rain showers and all of this is moving toward the northeast as an area of low pressure moves off shore and deepens. winter weather advisories in effect for the midatlantic and

as far away as baltimore and washington. nothing in effect for our region. baltimore and washington anticipating a light coating during the morning rush. in philadelphia 23, only 16 in allentown, nine in the poconos, 19 in reading in dover 25 so it is cold enough for light snow n wildwood 25 as well. scranton eight state college 12 and pittsburgh at 19 degrees. so, the cold is going to stick. as this area of low pressure moves towards the northeast it just brushes by. really no big deal but a chance is enough to see a little bit of light snow make some area roads slick especially through cape may county atlantic county and into kent and sussex in delaware. temperatures will be in the 30's. outside of this area impacted we're just talking about a mostly cloudy sky. once that low pulls away increasing sunshine for thursday. temperatures still in the 30's. friday closer to 40 in many locations but the sun will be the very consistent part of the lo long range forecast. future snow amounts show nothing in philadelphia, not even wilmington but dover a chance of a coating there. millville a chance of a coating, wildwood even through atlantic city. overnight the low 19 in the city cold interour suburbs. tomorrow mostly cloudy with a rain and wet snow shower south and east especially in the morning. the high temperature 32 degrees. and on the exclusive eyewitness weather seven-day forecast, 36 thursday, 39 on friday and then look what happens over the weekend. 41 saturday. 48 on sunday. wow. monday for the holiday 40 degrees and then by tuesday, 40. so it stays at or above average from friday on.

looking good to me. we have to get through tomorrow morning. it's kind of an upside down situation. you usually see the snow to the north, not to the south. we haven't had much this year so take it slow. >> kathy thanks. >> rob ellis joins us for sports. >> speaking of north what basketball hall of famer will be spending his evening on north broad tonight and the sixers looking to make it a season high ♪ ♪ ♪ turn around ♪ ♪ every now and then i get a little bit hungry ♪ ♪ and there's nothing really good around ♪ ♪ turn around ♪ ♪ every now and then i get a little bit tired ♪ ♪ of living off the taste of the air ♪ ♪ turn around, barry ♪ ♪ finally, i have a manly chocolatey snack ♪ ♪ and fiber so my wife won't give me any more flack ♪ ♪ i finally found the right snack ♪ ♪ ♪ >> the sixers and hawks ended tonight's game having won a combined 11 straight games. nine belonged to atlanta but why let the facts get in the way of a good lead in. hawks leading by 12, former sixers kyle korver knocks down the triple. he had 15 points. this is one of the few highlights of the night for the sixers right here. kj mcdaniels athletic move and jam right there. he had 14.

sixers trail by 13 at that point but the night belonged to al horford. he would record his first career triple-double. hawks win their 23rd game in 25 tries they improve to a franchise best 30 and eight start. final 105-87. larry brown spent six seasons as the sixers head coach from 1997 to 2003. his smu club will battle temple in an american athletic conference tomorrow night. temple had their six game winning streak snapped against tulsa and may have to play without will murray. these two coaches they go way back. >> one of the most underrated coaches there is so -- when i see him play now since they got some of those transfers back the way they beat kansas that's a big turn around over last year. >> i appreciate the friendship but most importantly the respect of an opposing basketball coach like he is is pretty nice. >> don't look now but flyers wop three of four, they beat up the lightning last night seven to three. the orange and black travel to washington tomorrow night. but the wip did not come without a price. defenseman brayden coburn injured his left foot blocking a shot. that's the same foot he hurt in the season opener boston. expected to be out for four weeks. cowboys and head coach jason garrett agreed on contract extension five years $30 million not bad for a guy who was on the hot seat entering the season. ohio state beat oregon. marcus mariota has just to declare for the draft. he has one year of eligibility
