(record scratch) you say stand n' stuff tortillas old el paso says... start somewhere fresh >> ♪ >> from the cbs broadcast center in philadelphia, this is cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> tonight we are tracking snow. the road crews are ready as we prepare for a wintry morning that could make for a pretty rough commute. this is a live look at storm scan3 you can see all the snow is to our west right now but it is inching closer to our area. good evening, i'm chris may. >> i'm jessica dean. we have team three coverage tonight. "eyewitness news" reporter diana rocco will show us how road crews will prepare the roads but first let's check in with meteorologist kathy orr. kathy, what's the latest now. >> they don't call this a clipper for nothing. an alberta clipper originating in alberta clipper because it originates first. we're talking about snow by day break, it moves in, moves out by late morning but it does leave accumulating snow. temperatures will be so cold it will stick immediately. that's why the winter weather advisory has been post-ed for southeastern pennsylvania, of

course south jersey and the entire state of delaware. so we're talking about a light accumulation of snow. temperatures right now allentown 20, philadelphia 26, the poconos at 11 and even colder air is coming, five in chicago with snow falling right now, lexington 21, cleveland 10. so with very cold temperatures you see a light fluffy snow. these are all of our computer models we look at. averaging between one and 2-inches and that is what we expect with this. so for your morning commute some poor timing 'cause 1 to 2 inches of snow can cause big problems because of the timing and everyone wanting to get on the road. there will be reduced visibility at times and any of those untreated roads will definitely be slick. coming up we'll talk more about the bitter cold that is coming also wind chills will fall below zero, so this is going to be part two of our weather week and then more snow in the seven day. we'll send it back to you for now. >> kathy, you know we haven't had to break out the boots or snowblowers just yet 'cause this season has been quiet at least compared to last year. >> that's right. this time last season we had 20-inches of snow. >> whoa. >> that was a lot. normal average through today is four and a half inches. so far this year we've only seen .10. with snow on the way road crews have been hard at work and they'll continue through the night. "eyewitness news" reporter diana rocco is live on oregon avenue in south philadelphia with more. diane alternate. jess today, i don't know too many people who are missing last winter right about now but nonetheless we're outside a salt yard in south philadelphia and penndot says they're ready. they have 105,000 tons of salt but not for this storm but the

rest that this winter has to all right. the first snow event of 2015 may not be can coming in fast and furious but nonetheless penndot is taking it seriously. city and state briners have been treating roads this sunday night. 200 plows and salters are waiting for those first flakes to fall. the first shift dee employs at at -- deploys at midnight. >> this snow is not predicted to give us much accumulation. >> reporter: so far penndot has only used 8,000 tons of salt compared to 44000 tons by this same time last year. the king of prussia traffic control center is quiet now but come morning, more than 300 cameras will have an eye on state roads looking for disabled vehicles. in camden county, new jersey a-code blue has been issued with temperatures falling below freezing and only expected to drop further. >> all our shelters are opened all night long but they keep an eye out and make sure that if somebody is in need that they take them to designated sites. >> reporter: everyone is encouraged to check on elderly and pets and keep kids bundled at the bus stops. many in collingswood were out braving these cold temperatures. back in pa drivers not looking forward to a messy morning commute. >> this time i'm prepared. i got four bags of salt at home. >> reporter: i'm good. >> i don't want anybody hitting me up, either. that's mine. >> not that big of a deal. we have extra. >> reporter: so, the first wave of penndot plows hit the road about midnight tonight and they will be ready for whatever the morning commute has to bring. they are asking people to leave plenty of extra time on

your way to work and make sure to keep a safe distance behind those snowplows. we're live in south philadelphia tonight i'm diana rocco for "eyewitness news" on the cw philly diana thank you. you can stay one step a hester forecast with the cbsphilly weather app. it's appreciation it's also available in google play and itunes. be sure to wake up with "eyewitness news" tomorrow morning. we'll have the latest on the storm and any possible school closures and delays. we'll get starter at 4:30 on on our sister station cbs3 and then we'll go over here to the cw from 7:00 to 9:00. >> the man suspected in the ambush of two pennsylvania state troopers eric frein is order held for trial at a preliminary hearing today. this is new video of frein today. at that hearing prosecutors called eyewitnesses and they played surveillance video from inside the emergency rooming grove barracks where the ambush occurred back on september 12th. in that attack corporal bryon dixon was killed and trooper alex douglass was wounded. >> yes he has a long road to recovery he has some surgeries ahead of him but he's very upbeat and hopes one day to be able to return to work with the state police. >> friday's arraignment --s 14's frein's arraignment is set. >> another man is being questioned by police. a third is on the loose tonight. investigators say the victim was found in the front seat of his car. >> flew tonight northwest detectives need your help finding the trio who robbed a grocery store at gun point.

surveillance video shows them entering papi's on the 6100 block of bane street the sunday before christmas. two of them were armed. one became so impatient he pushed the clerk and jumped behind the registers to take matters into his own hands. those suspects got away with $2,300 in cash two cell phones and cigarettes. a gunman who opened fire at port richmond toys r us is still on the loose tonight. investigators believe this was a botched robbery. he was trying to get inside the store around 6:30 this morning but employees kept the doors locked. he fired a round through the glass, then ran off. no one was hurt. philadelphia police are hoping you can help identify two suspects in this surveillance video. it comes from that washington square where two men were attacked while walking along twelfth street last movement one of those victims was knocked unconscious and had to be treated at the hospital forehead trauma. if you think you can help find the attackers contact police. jury selection is under way in the trial of boston marathon bombing suspect dzhokhar tsarnaev. inside a courthouse in boston the suspect sat with his lawyers as they began the process of picking jurors from a pool of 1200 people. tsarnaev showed up with shaggy hair an scruffy beard today. this jury will decide whether the 21-year-old carried out the deadly 2013 bombings with his brother and if so, whether he should be put to death. >> one of the things that's going to happen in this jury selection process is that you have to the do what the lawyers call death qualify a jury. and what that means is even if you are against the death penalty but you say this, you know, i can follow the law,.

>> opening statements in the trial are set for next month. >> well, things have gotten real tonight for a famous new jersey housewife. before sunrise today, reality tv star teresa guidice traveled in her nome north jersey to the correctional institution in danbury connecticut. she did plead guilty to bankruptcy fraud and was sentenced to 15 months in federal prison but with good behavior guidice could be out in under a year. still, she would have to go to a halfway house at some point. her husband also pled guilty. he'll serve his sentence once she returns home. well, the former philadelphia sportscaster don tollefson rejects a last minute deal triggering the start of a fraud and theft trial in bucks county. the deal included a two to 20 year sentence with the treatment program that would have reduced his time in prison. tollefson is accused of stealing $340,000 intended for sports trips benefiting charities. all but two alternate jurors were chosen today. the trial will begin when jury selection wraps up tomorrow. ly. >> it was the hug that left a sour taste in the mouths of many in new jersey. new jersey governor chris christie embracing cowboys owner jerry jones. it came during the dallas playoff win over the lions yesterday. eagles fans not too happy but the governor has made no secret of his love for the cowboys. he spoke about that hug and the high five that never was on sports radio in new york. >> difficult to describe the level of intensity in the jones box during these games and so, no, believe me, i'm sitting in jerry jones' box. >> the governor's office says jerry jones covered the cost of the trip and taxpayer money

cold. temperatures plunged to 11 below zero in minneapolis this morning. this is the same system that's headed our way. meteorologist kathy orr joins us with the forecast and what this system means for us in about three minutes. >> two members of the u.s. ski team were killed during an avalanche while practicing near the team's training base in us a -- austria. four teammates were able to escape unharmed. the victims have been identified as 19-year-old bryce astle of utah and ronnie berlack of hugh nam. an avalanche alert had been in the area. >> the flu is hitting people hard across the nation with the cdc reporting widespread activity in nearly all 50 states. in our area delaware as 632 confirmed cases. there very four deaths in the first state. in pa there are more than 10,000 cases with 591 of those in montgomery county. new jersey doesn't release numbers but says flu activity there is high the flu epidemic is blamed in part on this year's vaccine. officials say it may be about 30 percent effective because the main string of influenza that's circumstance laterring h3n2 is not a good match for this vaccine. >> the average year we see an effectiveness of the vaccine somewhere at a 50 to 70 percent and so it might be a little lower this year but even if it's lower, it may provide some protection especially important in people who are high risk. >> the h3n2 virus sends to cause more severe illness especially in very young children and the elderly. flu related hospitalizations for the elderly are more than double what they were this time last year. >> well, from hamburgers to

that cup of coffee you drink in the morning get ready to spend more money on some very popular items this year. >> three on your side consumer reporter jim donovan looks at what's expected to be more expensive in 2015 reporter: tired rising prices in isn't places you can blame it on lack of rain. prices are expected to go up another four four to 5 percent: popular k cup cough fees will be about 8 percent higher this year. first red box boosted the price to rents dvd movies and blu-ray disk. rendering a video game jumps to three dollars a day a one dollar increase. it will cost you more to travel too. tolls on the pa turnpike are up 5 percent and even though fuel prices are falling air fares are expected to still climb between two and 6 percent depend on location. healthcare costs pretty much go up every year and this year is no exception. price waterhouse coopers health research institute reports estimates medical costs will rise by 6.8 percent in 2015. fedex and ups begin charging customers based on dimension of their package this year instead of just by weight. the shipping prices for both carriers are going up 4.9 percent. regardless of rising price as new year is a great time to take a fresh look at your household budget or even start one if you don't already have one. kiplinger's personal finance has a great worksheet. i posted a link on cbsphilly.com and on my facebook and twitter fielder reporting for three on your side i'm jim donovan. >> "eyewitness news" has an exclusive look at a much anticipated new restaurant before it opens to the public. and even if you've been to the

address before, you have never seen it quite like this. >> celebrity chef jose garces has taken over the old original buck bookbinders on walnut street. the iconic restaurant opened in the late 1800s and closed in 2009. the site is going to stay the same and so will items like lobster and snapper soups. garces is taking over with the help of the former owner's grandson. >> to incredible video of an emu on the run. >> take a look at this. drivers in israel do a double take as they encountered this likely jogger and he's really sprinterring. the emu was recorded zig sagging through traffic in the rain. it was eventually captured and taken from the roadway taken to what we presume is a better location than a multilane road there. >> hm. that could be us trying get away from the bad weather tomorrow. >> run away. >> running down the road. we are tracking snow tonight. you know that system push our way and it should be here just in time for the morning rush. >> our meteorologist meteorologist cath or has her eye on awful it now. she joins us from the weather center. >> what's the latest. >> we're talking about the time between 6:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. when the snow will be moving in right in time for the morning rush. our weather watchers are saying temperatures are cold rider now and we know they're going to get even colder so expect a light fluffy snow this time great for the ski resorts. right now 19 degrees is being reported in perkasie. chuck says a cold night the barometric pressure falling a sign that a storm is definitely coming. it is 25 degrees right now in south jersey.

hal says the wind down in the northwest at about 6 miles an hour and we are seeing the full moon shining through high clouds. high clouds associated with our clipper that is moving toward the region. we'll go through the wilmington area in newark where the temperature is 25 degrees. john says brr another cold night. if you would like to report during the storm for us and other storms this season you could be featured in one of our newscasts by becoming an eyewitness weather watcher. sign up now. go to cbsphilly.com/watchers. it is a cold night on the river rink but it sure does look pretty at penn's landing tonight. it will be a little bit snow covered to put you in that winter spirit by tomorrow afternoon. but looking great down there at penn's landing. storm scan3 shows clouds moving in, those high clouds and our storm center is moving right through the great lakes. the chicago land area moving through cincinnati and it won't be long before it's in philadelphia. so when we wake up we'll watch this clipper zip right through the region. it is going to be a fast mover as always and typically clippers leave between one and 3-inches of snow. that's the max with this. not a lot of moisture. it's coupleing from a big area of land mass, no moisture out there. can't tap into the gulf, can't tap into the atlantic so we see just a couple inches of snow. for most of us it will be sweepable tomorrow but look at these watches and warnings extending from des moines all the way to philadelphia. so, in the track of this system leaving variable amounts of snow and a lost it's temperature dependent. when you have temperatures in the teens and single numbers you can make more snow. that's what's going to happen out west. for us we're talking about a

start time between 6:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. it will start and stick right away because the temperatures are so cold. steady snow between 8 o'clock and 10 o'clock. i looked at new information coming in and after the 10 o'clock or 11 o'clock hour some scattered snow showers so really the more intense part is going to be in the morning unfortunately during the morning commute. between one and 2-inches of snow expected, possibility of a little will less down the shore. second part of our weather story is the cold. the jet stream takes an enormous dive and by thursday we're talking about the coldest air we've seen since last january which was bitterly cold. this is definitely the coldest air of the season colder than it was in november. that will impact the wind chill. so the wind and the cold will put wind chills in the 20's for tuesday. the teens for wednesday. and zero's or the single numbers for thursday but below zero thursday morning and then by friday, slowly seeing some improvement but wind chills in the 20's isn't much of an improvement. overnight low temperatures in the teens so very cold. during the day tomorrow the high temperature 29. the snow mainly through the noon hour and on the exclusive eyewitness weather seven-day forecast, take a look. temperatures brutally cold this week, rebounding a bit over the weekend. be sure to wake up with "eyewitness news" in the morning. katie will track the weather. our team starts at 4:30 on our sister station cbs3 and then on the cw. we'll be back with beasley in sports right after ring ring! progresso! it's ok that your soup tastes like my homemade. it's our slow simmered vegetables and tender white meat chicken. apology accepted. i'm watching you soup people. make it progresso or
