>> gloats from the cbs broadcast center in philadelphia, this is cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> ♪ >> wild winter weather. it's been warm and wet all day long with a severe thunderstorm warning thrown in the mix. storm scan3 was tracking the thunderstorm earlier tonight but the focus has shifted back to the rain. it's a wet out in there all throughout the region. after the rain a drop in temperatures. get ready for really cold conditions. good evening, i'm natasha brown. thanks for joining us. let's get right over to meteorologist justin drabick. he's here to tell us when the rain will end and the cold will come back. >> it is january so you know it has to get cold again. town to maybe an hour or so of leftover showers. line of storms came through parts of south jersey. likely these were storms producing wind gusts up to 60 miles per hour. right now leftover light spotty showers across new jersey and we'll continue to clear the skies from west to east. how much rain have we talked about in the past 24 hours? areas in green right around the trenton area down through philadelphia wilmington, that's about an inch of rain from this entire storm system so rainfall amounts across parts of the region. now we'll enter a drier scenario for the next 12 to 24 hours. winds starting to pick up a little out of the west 20 miles per hour sustained in philadelphia, wilmington. that's the can cold front that came through going to usher in the cooler and drier air. that cold air not here just yet.

54 at the airport, 44 reading. starting to move in across parts of central pennsylvania but you'll notice a difference tomorrow morning waking up to mid 30's in the city. the winds will make it feel like the teens and 20's monday morning 6789 in the full forecast we'll talk about how long the wind and cold lasts and potential for light snow across the region. stay one step ahead of the forecast at cbsphilly. free and available now google itunes. >> the family of shane montgomery tells "eyewitness news" his death has been ruled an accident. "eyewitness news" reporter syma chowdhury tells us how the west chester university student impacted the light traffic volume of people he never even met. >> we have done what we have promised. we have found and brought shane home. >> reporter: the family of shane montgomery and the community that supports them begins to mourn. shane's parents confirmed that a body pulled from the schuylkill river saturday is the missing 21-year-old student. >> it's a great community. >> reporter: the community sprang into action looking for shane who was last seen leaving kildare's irish pub early thanksgiving morning. volunteers posted fliers hoping someone had seen him. folks like luke pollack watched the news for updates. >> i found out actually threw the breath out of me. >> reporter: surveillance video was released last month showing shane walking across the bridge spanning the manayunk canal towards a parking spot next to the schuylkill river. shane's keys were found that that area short before christmas. whether it was volunteers tying green ribbons or posting prayers on facebook the

community came together to help find the missing west chester university student. >> i thought it was neat that like people showed they cared they came to the search, there was over 500 people that came to help. i think it was awesome people showed they cared. >> reporter: the family filled with both sadness and relief will have the closure they need and so will this grieving community. >> everybody was involved. the community really did come together and it's tragic what happened it really is. >> reporter: syma chowdhury "eyewitness news" on the cw philly viewing for shane montgomery will be held at the manayunk church where search teams gathered saint john the baptist. donations in his name may be sent to the garden state under water recovery unit in milford new jersey or the friends of saint john the baptist. officers from all around the country they traveled to new york city today to pay their respects to one of their fallen brothers in blue. officer wenjan liu who was ambushed and middlebrook lynn last month with his partner was laid to rest today. matt rivers has got the latest. >> reporter: thousands of police officers lined the funeral procession including dozens of philadelphia's finest who went to new york city to lend their support. >> ♪ >> reporter: somber notes played under gray sunday skies in new york city as officers wenjan liu was laid to rest. his wife sobbed as officers handed her the flag from his casket her emotion laid bear as she spoke at the off and only. >> wenjan my hero. we can always count on him. >> reporter: new york city

mayor bill deblasio attended the funeral but many police officers turned their backs when he spoke. nypd union officials criticize the the mayor for not supporting the police department in the days after the attack and backs were in your own words protest. overall however the day's events were about showing support for a grieving family wenjan will always live in our hearts, my heart. we love you. i love you. >> executed like these two officers were it hits home. >> reporter: officer michael kelly one of 80 police officers from philadelphia attended the off and only. >> part of our responsibility to sustain someone's memory. to sustain our fallen officer's memory. >> we stand for the community went stand against the terrible nature of their assassination. >> reporter: we asked each officer to describe what it felt like to stand amid thousands saying goodbye to a fallen officer. all had trouble putting it into words. >> it's hard to explain. it's a proud moment that i could be part of that. proud moment that these men were buried with dignity. >> reporter: and within the last year according to the fbi 115 police officers nationwide have died in the line of duty. we're live in the sat center, matt rivers, "eyewitness news" on the cw philly. >> matt, thank you so much. citizens in chester county come together to thank local members of law enforcement for their protection and dedication. a officials say she has the

right idea because men and nim uniform deserve respect and praise. >> every law enforcement agency is represented here because we all work together. >> people put their lives on the line it's very important to come out shown your support. >> so many people turned out for the pro-police rally in delaware county that the line stretched all the way around for several blocks. signs of support were held high and t-shirts were sold. all the money raised will be sent to the families of the police officers assassinate in there new york city. meantime a dog attack, it is ends with an animal dead an philadelphia police officer in the hospital. neighbors at 30th and girard say a dog was trying to get into a gate where another dog was being held. officers reportedly tried to taser the animal but the dog bit an officer on the arm and the dog was ultimately shot and killed. another dog was taken from the scene by animal control officers. and a man is found shot to death slumped over in a car in cobbs creek and philadelphia police say the gunman is still out there somewhere. we're told the victim is identified as miguel rodriguez. so far investigators don't have much else to go on this in this case. a $20,000 reward is currently being offered. it's been nearly two years since the boston marathon bombing but tomorrow the trial begins for one of the alleged masterminds behind the attack. dzhokhar tsarnaev is accused of conspiring with his late brother to planter two bombs near the finish line. three people were killed, more than 250 others were injured. tomorrow attorneys will begin selecting the jury in this case, a process that could take weeks.

if convicted tsarnaev to face the death penalty. sad news to pass along here. espn sportscaster stuart scott has died following a long battle with cancer. he was just 49 years old. the network said scott passed away today and had fought cancer since a diagnosis late in 2007. espn president john skipper called scott "a true friend and inspirational figure." coming up in sports lesley van arsdale has more on how stuart scott is being remembered tonight. if you drive along the pennsylvania turnpike you may need to bring along a little extra pocket change. starting today all of the highway's tolls were raised by 5 percent. that comes out to an average of about five cents more for ez pass drivers and 10 cents more if you're paying cash. experts for the turnpike commission tells us the increase will fund roadway projects both locally and statewide. >> primarily those obligations are obviously to maintain and to improve our own 550-mile toll road system but also to provide some supplemental funding to the pennsylvania department of transportation. >> parts of the turnpike are being widened and rebuilt. as for the supplemental funding to penndot the commission must provide $450 million every year. sylvester stallone is bringing another popular character back to the big screen. that is coming up next. plus caught on camera the moment a fireworks factory explodes knocking the unsuspecting photographer off his seat. and coming up in sports, it's wild card weekend. lesley shows us which teams are moving on can't teams will

soon clean out their locker. justin. >> feels like early spring today with temperatures in the 50's and 60's. don't let that fool you. it is winter after all and very soon we'll be bundled up like this. in one major city wind chills plunged to 22 degrees below zero. find out when the drastic drop in temperatures will arrive >> caught on cram a fireworks factory explodes in colombia. the force that of blast knocked the photographer right off his feet. the explosion happened near bogota and crews are searching nearby buildings right now to see if anyone else was injured. also an indonesian report suggests icing most likely caused an engine problem in caused flight 8501 to crash. the investigation is still ongoing. 34 bodies have been discovered the indonesian rescue team confirms another large object believed to be the fuselage has been discovered under water. officials hope to find the black boxes tomorrow but poor visibility and bad weather have been hampering the search. and federal investigators

in kentucky they say the temperature seven-year-old girl who was the lone survivor of a plane crash may be key to determining what happened. sailor gutzler freed herself from the wreckage and walked nearly a nile get help. she and her family were traveling from key west to illinois when the plane went down. gut her's parents sister and cousin were all killed. and usually they're out on the roads during bad weather but one salt truck wound up in someone's living room yesterday near pittsburgh. the driver tells police that he lost control on some ice and slid down a hill on the side of the road. the truck came to rest against the house leaving a large hole in the wall. the good news here. neither the homeowner nor the driver were hurt. >> well, bone chilling cold in minnesota and minneapolis it feels like 22 degrees below zero. so cold in the midwest that some ski resorts have closed and the brutal air is heading our way. hard to imagine with temperatures reaching into the 60's in some spots today. now, we're not going to be talking about wind chills minus 22 but it is going to get cold and we did see highs in the 60's and to prove that we'll check in with our weather watchers today. currently we're in the 40's and 50's. not that bad outside but these are some high temperatures we saw milltown delaware jason at 62 degrees douglas in vincentown also at 62, hal in collingswood new jersey coming in at 60 degrees also in riverside, new jersey, ron russell also a mild 60 degrees. some other spots around the region even doylestown got into the mild air, 66 reported by irwin and stan. if you want to be featured in

our fuse cast sign up right now at cbsphilly.com/watchers. so we're talking about changes in our forecast and they're starting to come to to your western suburbs right now. we take a look outside after center city. showers around earlier. pretty much shut off now across the city and that's going to be improving conditions through the overnight. still some leftover rain out in central and eastern new jersey. you can see this on storm scan3. the cold front working its way through our region right now. some leftover rain showers delaware new jersey in the next hour. there's the cold air central western pennsylvania in the form of snow showers. that snow showers won't reach our area overnight. we'll just see clear skies coming in from west to east. big difference in the temperatures though by the time you wake up. compare it right now to this time yesterday. look at that. 13 even 11 degrees warmer than 24 hours ago. enjoy it now. things really quickly change. 47 in red, 47 lancaster still some mid-50's philadelphia and south and east. there's some real cold air we're talking about in the upper midwest. look at minneapolis right now. the current temperature the actual air temperature minus five. it's three in milwaukee. we're not going to see temperatures this cold but that's the idea. you'll feel the difference tomorrow. we go from 50 today in philadelphia to 37 for the afternoon temperature on monday. that's 21 degrees colder than today. winds are starting to kick up out of the west to northwest. that's bringing in that colder drier air mass. that sustained wind continues tomorrow so it's going to be windy at times through the afternoon. winds could gust up to near 30 miles an hour. that will bring wind chill

values down into the 20's even teens in the morning hours so dress warm monday. then what happens wednesday and thursday, we see a true arctic air moving in. so then we're talking high temperatures a good 10 to 15 degrees below average. we should be around 40 this time of year. do the math. we're talking about mid-20's for the actual air temperature. tomorrow when we start to cool it down upper 30's, close to near average, mostly sunny skies looking windy. tuesday, it's a little weak system, a clipper system, it's fast moving but it will be cold enough for a period of light snow morning hours into early afternoon. may drop up to an inch in some spots across the delaware valley. once that passes, that reinforces the cold air. showers come to an end overnight, back to sunshine for monday. sun won't help the temperatures out hemorrhage. tuesday clouds move back in. there's that period of light snow moving in from west to east. looks like mid morning that could slow things down for the morning commute. could taper off by mid to late afternoon. wednesday clouds around maybe a stray flurry or snow showers. overnight windy, colder, dropping to 34 degrees. winds gust up to 25 miles an hour. cold day tomorrow, mostly sunny, windy with a high of 37 degrees but when you factor in there wind it will feel like the teens and 20's at times. we'll bring light snow in here on tuesday with a high of 32 degrees. each day it gets colder. wednesday 28 for the actual temperatures, still windy with some sunshine. thursday that's the coldest day waking up with temperatures in the single digits and teens only getting to a high of 24 degrees. by the weekend still keep it

dallas driving for the go ahead score. tony romo all day long in the pocket finds terrence williams in the back of the end zone. cowboys take the lead. lions with the ball on fourth down savage gets sacked. dallas recovers the ball. that's your ball game. cowboys win 24 to 20 and they'll take on the packers next sunday. first day of the game featured bengals and colts. before the game a moment of silence for espn stuart scott. as we told you earlier he passed away at the age of 49. to the game the colts handled the bengals in impressive fashion. in the third quarter andrew luck finding dante for the 36-yard touchdown pass. they take on the broncos with a 26 to 10 win. the flyers in trouble with the nhl fined an undisclosed amount of money for violating the league's collective bargaining agreement. the team traveled to nashville on december 26. big no-no. to be in compliance they would have toughly on december 27th. that was the day of the game: last night the flyers ended the eight game road trip in new jersey. jamir jagr became the oldest player in nhl history with a hat trick. they've now dropped to five in a row. >> we were hungry. we skated. seemed like we wandered the puck more. we played like we were desperate and seems like we backed off and just let the team stick it to us. >> owls riding a five game winning streak and temple looking good early.
