a federal investigation is underway after shots are fired near the home of vice-president, joe biden in delaware. and the faa is investigating after two planes nearly collide on the tarmac at jfk. but the big story on "action news" tonight is a a day of deadly crashes resulting from a dangerously icy conditions. the rain is moving out the but concerns, over slick road continue and the temperature begin to dip in the delaware and lehigh valleys. >> this was the scene earlier today as motorist, lost control on the slippery pavement, pile ups on the schuylkill expressway, and blue route claim the lives of

three people. we will have have more coming up from "action news" reporter annie mccormack but let's begin with melissa magee over at the big board. >> yes sarah walter, heavy rain we pick up earlier today is pushing off to the north and east. big concern tonight will be these temperatures dropping below freezing in areas of black ice, as well. storm tracker six live double scan radar showing you this is what caused the problems for us earlier today. we had icy conditions setting up north and west of town and that soaking rain along i-95 corridor in areas to the south and east. it continues to press up in new england and, a soak's cross delaware and lehigh valleys today especially in southern new jersey. burlington county, florence township you saw 2.28 inches of rain washington township 2.10 philadelphia a daily record rainfall total of 1.84 and record today in wilmington with 1.62 inches. kenneth square in chester county with 1.29 inches of

rainfall. the moisture is moving out. the it is all about the temperatures tonight. philadelphia coming in at 37 degrees. we are above freezing. thirty-nine in wildwood. concern right now north and west allentown 1 degree above freezing mark in at 33 but below freezing at reading at 31. 39 degrees in lancaster. future tracker six has you covered throughout the the rest of tonight you can see these numbers north and west of that i-95 corridor at freezing mark or below. philadelphia hovering around that south and east will stay slightly above 32 degrees. waking up tomorrow morning you can see these numbers in the the lower 30's if not below 30 degrees in the upper 20's as you wake up tomorrow morning. that is the big concern. we will talk about the issue overnight and into early tomorrow morning temperatures will be dropping below 32 degrees, refreeze is likely if it is not already occurring for puddles standing water and untreated surfaces. coming up we will look at the forecast and let you know what is ahead for first day of the workweek with the full and exclusive accu weather

forecast walter. meantime penndot crews are out in full force trying to prepare the road from another potential flash freeze. 135 salt trucks are dispatch a across chester and montgomery and bucks counties, but accidents are already being reported. at midnight more will be deployed, in delaware and philadelphia counties. the mission is to prevent a repeat of what happened this morning. for details we will go to annie mccormack live on the schuylkill expressway. >> reporter: walter, this morning was a tragic mess, that took almost seven hours for state troopers to clear the schuylkill expressway. at within point they had tow trucks pulling diesels off of other vehicles. they tell us that wasn't the only deadly crash they had to deal with this morning. who are on on the schuylkill just before 7:00 a.m. sunday flash freeze caused multiple crashes including this one in upper merion montgomery county described as a chain reaction with three separate accidents involving 56 vehicles killing one and injuring 30.

and, another, 11 vehicles subsequently crashed at the same location, a at least four were taken to the hospital. it didn't end there. near the 476 tragedy, on route three, this woman described the multi vehicle accident she survived. >> i thought that was the end of me. i thought it was the end of me but i'm still here by the grace of god. >> we're told that the majority of the people who were transported to the hospital were expect to be treated, and released tonight. reporting live along the schuylkill expressway annie mccormack for "action news" at ten on phl17. >> thank you. travel was treacherous this morning even for those trying to help other victims of the weather. a delaware state troop are suffered minor injuries when his cruiser was hit road for a while, not far way a van is also crashed and couple to the icy road. in the frankford section a

fire truck jackknifed on the ice, while fire fighters were responding to a call. ladder 15, that truck, slid on an icy frankford avenue near margaret street and jackknifed. there were no injuries. ice melt went down on the road and that fire truck got moving again. meanwhile ice also forced septa to force bus services for several hours this morning. photo event in from "action news" reporter mohammad reveals just how treacherous conditions were. this bus on the xh route was not able to stop at the intersection. fortunately nobody was injured in this area here. we will keep an eye out for icy conditions and potential flooding all night long, tune in at 4:30 tomorrow morning over on six abc for the very latest from accu weather along with updates on traffic conditions. tonight federal and local law enforcement officials are investigating shots fired near the delaware home of vice-president joe biden. it happened overnight biden family was in the home at the time. saltsman has full details from new castle county. >> the vice-president and his wife and jill biden spent their weekend in delaware which was the case this weekend but authorities tell us this he were out for the evening at the the time that the incident took place. it may have in fact been a drive by shooting or it may have just been random shots fired. authorities say that they are investigating that potential threat tonight. the the new castle county home of vice-president joe biden is quiet the tonight, the entrance under heavy guard protecting the the house that is set several hundred feet off of the road. it was here out front of the guard shack that the secret service spokesperson says one of the guard her multiple shots fired in the area of the resident and then witnessed a vehicle fleeing the scene at a high rate of speed. officers set up a perimeter around the home and check the property but were unsuccessful locating any suspects. authorities say one person was questioned but found not to be involved in the shooting. at this point we have no description of the vehicle, and in word of shell casings

were recovered near the house. police confirmed there was no damage found to the the biden house or neighboring residences and that the vice-president and his wife were not in any danger. the event occurred on a public road outside of the established security perimeter. there were reports of more shots fired a short time later at a nearby reservoir the vice-president's home is located in a heavily wooded area and not visible from the main road. the secret service, fbi and delaware police are still investigating, they say even if there was in damage done or intended target they still want to necessity who pull the trigger and why. in new castle county, i'm wendy saltsman for "action news" at ten on phl17. authorities in wilmington delaware have already confirmed that the third murder in the city for 2015. investigators say the shooter fired into this van overnight shooting a man in the front passenger seat in the head. driver sped away before stopping on the 700 block of east 27th street, police are still searching for the gun man, victim's name has in the

colliding right there on the runway. ice, rain here caused problems throughout the rain now we are looking ahead to the overnight hours and tomorrow. meteorologist melissa magee joins us with your accu weather forecast. >> sarah and walter as we go through overnight and tomorrow morning more specifically for morning rush, ice is still going to be a big concern. black ice. patchy black ice and refreezing on some surfaces. we will talk about that but this was definitely a problem, this was what produced the problem earlier today, icy morning, especially for areas north and west of that 95 corridor. norristown pick up a quarter inch of ice, lionville, gilbertsville, again it valley a tenth of an inch of ice. philadelphia reporting a trace of ice before conditions changed over and warmed up at the surface and then we have a eventual change over to rain this morning. outside tonight we will still have a concern we can see numbers along i-95 corridor in the upper 30's in philadelphia south and east 40 for beach haven and atlantic city.

allentown is 33. thirty-two at freezing mark in reading. 29 degrees in lancaster. conditions will more than likely refreeze on any of the roadways secondary road, and also some of the sidewalks. slippery concerns. another problem with the conditions north and west is that the the visibility, is reduced, we have very light wind low level moisture trapping that moisture as well so we are down to 1.3 miles in allentown, down to .3 in lancaster. do some extra time. we are down to 3 miles in wilmington. here's satellite six with action radar. you can see where that moisture is in upstate new york in northern sections of new england. it will do so for rest of tonight and notice off to the west, clouds will break and we will get some clearing as we get into the overnight hours and early tomorrow morning. however, issue will be on the road and in the untreated surfaces. watching out for black ice even in the early morning hours, again standing water puddles on the roadways, secondary road in the untreated surfaces, driveways

average, and on saturday for start of the weekend 38. forty-two as we get into sunday. temperatures will be back in the 40's by then. big concern tonight is when things are not drying out we will have issue of refreeze so allow, extra time overnight and tomorrow morning. >> good advice, thanks melissa. those icy roads across our area claimed three lives as motorist struggled to maintain control. this was the pile up that resulted from a so-called flash freeze on the schuylkill expressway this morning. thirty-one year-old eric allen blah was kill in the chain reaction in the the west bun lanes of gulph mills just before 7:00 this morning. more than 50 cars were involved in this pile up. up to 30 people were sent to the hospital and the schuylkill west was shut down for more than six hours. on the blue route, two people were killed in another pile up, this one involving the tractor trailer you see right here. this is the the west chester pike in broomall, delaware county. victims have been identified as thomas michael brennan of

land dale and jason anderson of, dover, delaware. four other people were injured. in the garden state state police handled more than 400 crashes and for a time, new jersey transit suspended all bus services. situation was worse in central and northern new jersey, as compared to south jersey. still commuters were forced to navigate highways, littered with damage vehicles and spin outs and crashes. new jersey turnpike and pal said parkway were among highways shut down in passaic, this fire truck was spinning its wheels as you can sianni pedestrians had a hard time getting around. more of the same in new york freezing rain hit a little later there but result was the same. wet road turned slippery and commuters have a tough time maintaining, control of their vehicles. person behind the wheel of the pick up there didn't make it out of the driveway safely. that was just one of many crashes all across the the hudson valley. bridges and tunnels and parks were closed for a while, because of the dangerous

conditions. back here investigators are trying to figure out why a man hit the by a car in southwest philadelphia overnight, had been lying in the road. police were called out to the intersection of 53rd and baltimore avenue just before 2:00 a.m. woman told police she dragged a man for half block before she realized he was stuck beneath her suv. at last check the victim remained in critical condition. in newark investigators are looking into whether alcohol played a role in this nasty crash. police say that a female driver crossed into the opposite lanes, and hit a jeep head on. it happened on paper mill road shortly after 1:00 a.m. it took fire fighters almost 30 in minutes to free would the man from her car. she was hospitalized in critical condition. hunt for the couple referred to as teenage bonnie and clyde has ended in florida. dalton heyes and his 13 year-old girlfriend, phillips were arrested just after midnight in panama city. earlier this month they vanished from their home town in western kentucky and from

there, allegedly went on a multi state crime spree. authorities say they broke into homes, forged checks and stole three pickup trucks along the way. officials in florida will extradite the teens back to kentucky this week where they are expected to face felony charges. tomorrow is martin luther king day and many will honor his legacy by participating in a day of service. national record 135,000 volunteers, are expect to take part in the 20th anniversary greater anniversary mlk day of service tomorrow. today stars of the movie selma returned to that alabama city to martin luther king and so many others made history in 1965. abc's steve has some more now. >> reporter: hate today ad in to history symbolic march up to the ebony bridge tonight, hollywood has come to alabama. selma producer oprah winfrey, film's director and lead actor and free screenings of the film for families here. but today they told us this is
